Ep # 86 - The Boy and the Heron [REVIEW]

Ep # 86 - The Boy and the Heron [REVIEW]

After their very recent retrospective of the Studio Ghibli canon, James and Imo apply their critical binoculars to Hayao Miyazaki's latest award-winning animation 'The Boy and the Heron' (2023), starring the voices of Robert Pattison, Christian Bale, Gemma Chan, Karen Fukuhara, Florence Pugh, Willem Dafoe and Mark Hamill (for the English dub).

Spirited away by previous Miyazaki movies, what do they think of his newest feature? They discuss everything from the stunningly detailed animation to its thematic connections with the filmmaker's wider work.

Is it a fevered dream of Ghibli wonders, or just a bit bird-brained?

Ep # 85 - Best of Studio Ghibli [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Just as visionary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki wins awards for his latest feature animation 'The Boy and the Heron' (2023), Imo and James decide to conduct a curated retrospective of the Studio Ghibli canon.

Picking their favourites from the director's oeuvre (and yes, it's their own subjective choices!), the anime addicts discuss their first steps into the magical world(s) of Miyazaki.

They explore the now classic Ghibli themes of childhood, environmentalism, metaphysics, and love in a film from each of the last four decades: 'My Neighbour Totoro' (1988), 'Princess Mononoke' (1997), 'Spirited Away' (2001), and 'Arrietty' (2010).

What is the spirit of Miyazaki? And will it be conjured again in his newest amazing animation?

Ep # 84 - Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget [REVIEW]

Just before year's end, James and Imo review Aardman/Netflix's 'Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget' (2023), directed by Sam Fell and starring the voice talents of Thandiwe Newton, Zachary Levi, Bella Ramsey, Imelda Staunton, Jane Horrocks, Lynn Ferguson, David Bradley, and Miranda Richardson.

Does the twenty-three (!) year wait for a sequel leave the critics feeling sunny-side up or is it rather over-egged? Alongside reflecting on the changes to the voice cast and politics of the movies, the two critics explore whether the original changed their eating habits...

They'll be back in 2024 with even more overanalysis!

Ep # 83 - Chicken Run [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

With 'Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget' (2023) newly hatched on Netflix last week, Imo and James dedicate their first (and last) 'Nostalgia Hits Differently' of the year to Aardman Animation's first and favoured feature film.

What do our two movie critics make of this very British take on 'The Great Escape' after so many years? They discuss the movie's surprising satire, sensational voice-acting, and its unexpected socialism.

Is it still as egg-cellent as they remember or is it rather scrambled on reflection? And do they think Netflix's sequel will live up to this plucky original?

Ep # 82 - Barbenheimer [SPECIAL]

Ep # 82 - Barbenheimer [SPECIAL]

Joining in with this summer's cinema sensation, James and Imo combine forces once again to review 'Barbenheimer' (2023) - an unlikely double-bill of campy satirical fun and heavy historical reflection.

First up is 'Barbie' (2023), a proudly feminist exploration of the iconic doll. Directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the famous toy couple, do the critics find this 'controversial' movie an unexpected, insightful delight or just brightly inanimate?

Following on from all that singing and dancing is director Christopher Nolan's latest film: 'Oppenheimer' (2023). This propulsive, dense three-hour epic, starring Cillian Murphy as the eponymous physicist, delves into the mindset of the man who helped unleashed the nuclear age. The two critics discuss the peaks and pitfalls in this Promethean morality tale of ambition and regret.

Which of these two films is a victory, and which just bombs?

Listen to this SPOILER-FILLED special for their reviews and discussion on the whole 'Barbenheimer' experience.

Ep # 81 - Elemental [REVIEW]

Ep # 81 - Elemental [REVIEW]

In the middle of a summer of sizzling heat and rising tides (climate change, anyone?), James and Imo find time to review Disney-Pixar's latest feature film 'Elemental' (2023), directed by Peter Sohn and starring the voices of Leah Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie Del Carmen, Shila Omni, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Catherine O'Hara.

Do the two Pixar fans think this rather under-publicised entry continues to ride the wave of the studio's most accomplished work, or is the spark long gone? They deep dive into the animation's themes and design choices, while discovering why the film's antagonist is Disney-Pixar's most interesting.

Ep # 80 - Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny [REVIEW]

Ep # 80 - Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny [REVIEW]

Having taken a biplane back from their nearest picture house, Imo and James review the latest swan-song of yet another 20th Century IP: 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' (2023), directed by James Mangold and starring Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, John Rhys Davies, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Boyd Holdbrook, Ethann Isidore and Mads Mikkelsen.

With distant memories of the last-last Indy outing (2008's 'The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' ), what do the two critics think of this first instalment without creator Steven Spielberg at the helm? They dig down into the film's resurrection of 80's Harrison Ford, post-World War 2 Nazism in America, and whether this film excavates some deeper truth in the iconic action hero.

A thrillingly final crack of the whip, or a franchise well past it's prime?

Ep # 79 - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse [REVIEW]

Ep # 79 - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse [REVIEW]

On this Saturday morning (much like an early weekend superhero cartoon special), Imo and James broadcast their SPOILER-FILLED review of the much anticipated 'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' (2023), directed by Joaquin Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, Kemp Powers, and starring the voices of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfield, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, Greta Lee, Shea Whigham, Karan Soni and Oscar Isaac.

The two web-shooting critics decide whether this sequel is another scintillating cinematic web filled with enough heart, humour, visual splendour and though-provoking themes to surpass the original's brilliance or is just unravelling Sony's smash-hit with one more nostalgia-loaded, multi-versal mishmash?

Join them for another swing around the ol' Spidey-Verse again!

Ep # 78 - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 [REVIEW]

Ep # 78 - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 [REVIEW]

In this SPOILER-FILLED review, Imo and James face the final flight of the rag-tag team-cum-family in director James Gunn's 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' (2023), starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Vin Diesel, Will Poulter, Elizabeth Debicki, Linda Cardellini, Maria Bakalova, Nathan Fillion, and Chukwudi Iwuji.

What do the two 'Guardians'-fans make of Gunn's last shot with this collective of beloved mad-cap misfits? Does it blast off the screen with its obvious heart-string pulling moments, ultra-violent gut-splattering action and deeply affecting, comedic cast? Or, is it yet another MCU flick that crashes and burns?

Time to hit the play button on your Walkmans people!

Ep # 77 - The Super Mario Bros. Movie [REVIEW]

Ep # 77 - The Super Mario Bros. Movie [REVIEW]

Dropping like a twinkling flag down a pole, James and Imo give their level scores on 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' (2023), directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, starring the voices of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen and Jack Black.

With both critics being children of the Nintendo Age (and living with the trauma of the live-action, box-office bomb 'Super Mario Bros' from 1993), they fire up their memories of Game-Boys and N64s to see how this newest video-game adaptation plays.

Does it soar above similar films in the genre (like 2021's 'Mortal Kombat') or does it need to be sucked down a memory-pipe (like 2021's 'Mortal Kombat')?

Alongside discussing the near 40-year 'lore' of the franchise, the two game-enthusiasts also give their thoughts on how a certain Princess goes from damsel-in-distress to miss-on-a-mission.

Ep # 76 - Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves [REVIEW]

Ep # 76 - Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves [REVIEW]

Imo and James roll the dice and see if there's anything's winning in this SPOILER-FILLED review of 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves' (2023), directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, Sophie Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head, Jason Wong and Hugh Grant.

With only one of our critics a real D&D enthusiast, what do the two critics make of this latest adaptation of the revered table-top game? Does it suffer the fate of previous attempts to bring beloved RPGs to live-action (see 2016's disappointing dud 'Warcraft') or does this fantasy romp conjure up enough movie magic for all comers?

Assemble at our coveted council for ultimate judgement.

Ep # 75 - Broker [REVIEW]

Ep # 75 - Broker [REVIEW]

In this brief episode of 'Even More Eyes', James and Imo review director Hirokazu Kore-eda's latest feature 'Broker' (2023), starring Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, Lee Ji-eun, Lee Joo-young, Im Seung-soo and Bae Doona.

Taking an unusual detour from high octane action and superhero antics, the two critics settle into the Japanese filmmaker's first foray into South Korean society. A young mother's fateful decision to leave her newborn baby at a church depository box has life-changing consequences for her, two opportunistic brokers, a mischevious orphan, and the pursuing police.

For one of our critics it's a return to Kore-eda's thematics of social class and unfamiliar familial bonds (2013's 'Like Father, Like Son', 2017's 'After the Storm' and 2018's 'Shoplifters') , while for another it's their first encounter with the director-writer's quietly powerful work.

Do they think this feature is Kore-eda's finest or spinning the wheel on his usual topics? Click play to find out.

Ep # 74 - Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania [REVIEW]

Ep # 74 - Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania [REVIEW]

In this SPOILER-FILLED review episode, Imo and James go down into Marvel's first release of the year: 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania' (2023), directed by Peyton Reed and starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, Kathryn Newton, Jonathan Majors, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Douglas, Katy O'Brian, David Dastmalchian, William Jackson Harper and Bill Murray.

Is this latest addition to the MCU descending into new depths thematically while expanding the exciting scope of the franchise's fifth phase, or can it go no lower in unceasing mediocrity? The two critics discuss some fundamentals in the physics of the Marvel world building, plus offer side-notes on the film's morality, and whether this all fits in with the adjunct series 'Loki' (or, is that necessary viewing now...?)

Does 'Quantumania' conquer expectations or gnaw at the audience's enthusiasm?

Ep # 71 - Avatar: The Way of Water [REVIEW]

In this SPOILER-FILLED review of this festive season's biggest blockbuster, James and Imo dive into the long-awaited sequel to James Cameron's 2009 immersive sci-fi epic- 'Avatar: The Way of Water' (2022), starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Kate Winslet, Jack Champion, CCH Pounder, Britain Dalton, Bailey Bass, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Filip Geljo, and Edie Falco.

After thirteen years, what do our critics find on the return to Pandora? Do they think the next stepping stone in Cameron's space saga is awash in visually stunning vistas, compelling characterisation and heady themes, or is it simply treading water with derivative ideas and mundane SFX?

Ep # 70 - See You Yesterday [REVIEW]

Ep # 70 - See You Yesterday [REVIEW]

Imo and James' brief exploration of Black representation in sci-fi comes to an end with director Stefon Bristol's 'See You Yesterday' (2019), a twisty teen time-travel thriller starring Eden Duncan-Smith, Danté Crichlow, Stro, Johnathan Nieves, Marsha Stephanie Blake, and Michael J. Fox.

The two critics discuss the conceits, concerns and controversial ending of Bristol's movie. What does 'See You Yesterday' have to say about the past and the future of Black representation in science-fiction, specifically those movies set in the United States?

Is this movie a leap forward or does it stay stuck in time?

Ep # 69 - Attack the Block [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Ep # 69 - Attack the Block [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Continuing their exploration of Black representation in sci-fi, James and Imo return to 2011's gritty-witty modern classic 'Attack the Block', written and directed by Joe Cornish, and starring John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, Jodie Whittaker and Nick Frost.

Noticing the film's deliberate decision to eschew extra-terrestrials' preference for landing in one of Earth's capital city centers, the two critics examine what happens when 'first contact' happens on a South London council estate.

They discuss the movie's depictions of race and class in the inner-city, especially in the turbulent context of 21st Century British politics. Does Cornish's social satire land, or is it now just triggering?

Ep # 68 - Project Power [REVIEW]

Inspired by the recent release of 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' (2022), Imo and James decide to explore Black representation in the science-fiction/super-hero fantasy genre (specifically, sci-fi movies that centre Black protagonists/characters).

The first curated film of the season is 'Project Power' (2020), starring Jamie Foxx, Dominique Fishback and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.

Picking up on this theme, the critics discuss how Joost and Schulman's sci-fi thriller deal with the US healthcare system, Hurricane Katrina, and the Tuskegee Experiment all within a compact feature film that also has equal measures of style, bombast and heart.

Is the movie an unappreciated power-punch or just dealing in stereotypes?

Ep # 67 - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever [REVIEW]

Ep # 67 - Black Panther: Wakanda Forever [REVIEW]

In this SPOILER-FILLED (no, seriously) review episode of 'Even More Eyes', Imo, James and recurring feature Fav return to Wakanda in director Ryan Coogler's highly anticipated sequel: 'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' (2022), starring Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Dominique Thorne, Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Mabel Cadena, Michaela Coel, Martin Freeman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Angela Bassett.

Is this a fierce and worthy follow-up to 2018's box office smash 'Black Panther'? The critics sink their claws deep when discussing the movie's depictions of grief, geopolitics and Afrofuturism, while reflecting on the loss of leading man Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020).

Marvel Film of the Year, or just a footnote in the seemingly forever saga of the MCU?

Ep # 66 - Beetlejuice [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Celebrating 'All Hallow's Eve', the nostalgia-haunted James and Imo bring you the final episode of 'Spoooooky Season' (or, perhaps more accurately 'Gay Christmas').

They discard any pretence at watching the horrific or terrifying by opting for the pure cringy-camp of Tim Burton's 'Beetlejuice' (1988).

For one of our bone-chilled critics, this is their first time opening the lid on this surreal nightmare of a movie. For the other, it's been kept under their subconscious for a long time. Do they think it's an unhinged delight or just plain unhinged? Alongside discussing Michael Keaton's unrecognisable, grotesque performance, they also discuss the shadows the film casts on Burton's oeuvre.

So, check out whether they think this last film of the season is a cinematic treat or trick!

Ep # 64 - Bedknobs and Broomsticks [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Darkness falls across the land...the midnight hour close at hand...the 'Even More Eyes' trawl in search of blood...to terrorise y'alls podcasthood!

With Halloween coming next week, the two disembodied voices known as Imo and James decide to celebrate the festivities with 'Spooky Season' - three nostalgic retrospectives on childhood favourites that show the creepy, the spooky, the weird and the kooky!

In honour of the late Angela Lansbury (1925-2022), they start off in unconventional fashion with 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks' (1971).

What's so frightening about this childhood classic? Our spine-chilled critics discuss the film's narrative eccentricity, problematic representations, and what would happen if Quentin Tarantino got to do the inevitable Disney remake.

So, turn that knob (oo-er) and enjoy the first (audio) haunting in this 'Spoooooooooky Season'!

Ep # 63 - LOTR: The Return of the King [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

All steps of their journey have led to this: Imo, James and Fav chuck their final thoughts into the Cracks of Cinema Podcasting with this last episode on Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings'.

Yet, before they disappear beyond the silver curtain to a far green country, there's still time to debate about how the film version did Denethor dirty; why the film's protracted epilogue is a deep depiction of PTSD; and what this triumphant trilogy has to teach about adapting fantasy epics and male bonding.

So, enjoy as our triumvirate take you there and back again on this final foray into Middle-Earth...to a time before the three podcasters knew that 'The Return of the King' (2003) would concur spookily with actual events in the UK...

James and Imo's journey back to 'The Lord of the Rings' continues...and they're no longer travelling alone. Emerging like a certain sorcerer from an underground brawl with a Balrog, Fav has come back to turn the tide...or at least to discuss the second chapter of the franchise.

The three intrepid nostalgia-hunters try to find out what they think about Jackson's sequel adaptation of 'The Two Towers' (2002) today. In counsel, they debate the characters' growth, Middle-Earth geopolitics, and the revolutionary potential of Andy Serkis' Gollum.

As they embark on the final stage of their quest, they start taking bets on which character is going to be their GOAT.

Ep # 61 - LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

In celebration of Amazon's 'The Rings of Power' (the latest cash grab to send Jeff Bezos to Mars- uh, sorry, dedicated attempt to bring Middle-Earth back to the screen) Imo and James embark on another adventure.

Returning to Peter Jackson's critically acclaimed adaptation of JRR Tolkien's 'un-filmmable' fantasy epic, how do they feel about 'The Lord of the Rings' on it's (near) twenty-first birthday?

For one of our critics, they have pored over Tolkien's lore for many an Age. For the other, the movies' theatrical cuts are the furthest into the legend they've ever been. Alongside remembrances of days long lost, they discuss the difficulties of adapting 'The Fellowship of the Ring' (2001), the story's allegorical resonance, and what Tolkien might have learned from 'Shrek'.

It's a dangerous business, clicking that play button. You start listening, and if you don't keep you don't keep your ears open, there's no knowing where this podcast will take you!

After attaining critical success with 'Get Out' (2017) and 'Us' (2019), what do the movie-gazers make of the director-writer's latest 'social thriller'? Does Peele's dose of freaky terror and social allegory suck you in or is it all a little difficult to digest?

After the irreverent 'Thor: Ragnarok' (2017) twisted up the saga of Thor, son of Odin, does Waititi's sequel capture lightning-in-a-bottle again or does it prove to hit our critics like a blunt axe? Is it 'Thor 4-ever Mighty' or 'Bore: Cringe and Noise'?

Ep # 58 - Jurassic World: Dominion [REVIEW]

After watching the whole era of 'Jurassic' films for their 'Dinosaur Dip-Dive', James and Imo offer their SPOILER-FILLED verdict on the epic conclusion: 'Jurassic World: Dominion' (2022), directed by Colin Trevorrow, and starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Isabella Sermon, DeWanda Wise, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum, Omar Sy, Daniella Pineda, Justice Smith, Campbell Scott and BD Wong.

As the dust settles on a near thirty-year period of dino-disaster films, what do they make of the finale? Does it hybridise nostalgia and innovation to make this franchise an apex summer blockbuster once again? Or is it a mediocre, mindless mash-up finally headed for a necessary extinction?

Listen now to see whether our exhausted cinema-tologists give their endorsement.

As 'Jurassic World: Dominion' stomps into cinemas today, Imo and James get into the last bit of cinematic carnage from the 'Jurassic Park' franchise: 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' (2015).

Coming to the end of this era, Day 5 has the two cinema-tologists make an unexpected discovery. The filmmakers aren't just hybridising the dinosaurs into ever more murderous monsters, but the genres as well. Might this penultimate peril-filled dino-movie have another name- 'Jurassic Mansion' perhaps? 'Jurassic House of Horror?' It seems the studio were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't ask themselves to think if they should...

Listen for their final venture into the Park (World?) before the finale, and their predictions for what happens next.

Day 4 of the 'Dinosaur Dip-Dive' sees James and Imo entering the new 'Jurassic' era: 'Jurassic World' (2015).

Fourteen years later- and despite a near extinction-level hiatus- the studios found a way and the Park was back!

Do our two cinema-tologists find this rebooted, satirical entry a thrilling evolution now that it's packed with 'tame-able' raptors, striking set-pieces and Chris Pratt? Or is there still degradation in the franchise's core genes?

Ep # 55 - Jurassic Park III [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Day 3 of the 'Dinosaur Dip-Dive' has Imo and James grappling with a fundamental question: what project did Sam Neill need funding to get him back for 'Jurassic Park III' (2001)?

With their childhood memories of the briefest in the 'Jurassic Park' saga lost to the mists of time (small mercies), can our two intrepid cinema-tologists find any meat left on the bones of the 'Jurassic Park' concept in this post-Spielberg venture? Or is there really nothing left to salvage?

Day 2 of the 'Dinosaur Dip-Dive' has James and Imo travel back to a film whose title already foreshadows their enthusiasm for the saga: 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park' (1997).

Even with Jeff Goldblum given the leading role and designer stubble (but losing much of the signature eccentric charm) the two cinema-tologists try desperately to extract some interest from a movie that not only continues it's progenitor's defects, but also adds dinos going wild in San Diego.

Was Spielberg's sequel already heading the franchise towards extinction? And if so, how will Imo and James survive the rest of the 'Jurassic Park' era?

With the grand finale of the 'Jurassic Park' franchise out this week ('Jurassic World: Dominion'), Imo and James decide to dust off a few fossils and resurrect the preceding five films over the next five days - a speed-run they're calling 'The Dinosaur Dip-Dive'.

Day 1 begins with the 1993 iconic, original popcorn-muncher from director Steven Spielberg and written by novelist Michael Crichton and screenwriter David Koepp.

The two cinema-tologists cast a beady eye back on their enthusiastic remembrances of the film from childhood...but do they now spot something more dubious in the famous dino-movie's DNA?

Ep # 52 - Everything Everywhere All At Once [REVIEW]

From one galaxy far, far away to all galaxies in all times, Imo and James finish up this season with a spoiler-filled FILM REVIEW episode. They give their verdict on the unrelentingly action-packed and quirkily fresh new film from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert: 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' (2022), starring Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, James Hong and Jamie Lee Curtis.

What version of the multiverse are our critics in? The one that decides the Daniels' new film is a cinematic triumph that has the magnificent Michelle Yeoh kicking-ass and capturing hearts in her own multiverse of madness? Or is it another where they think the film crumbles in on itself to be about nothing, nonsense and is all over the place? Or is it both? Or is it neither?

Ep # 50 - Episode II: Attack of the Clones [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

There is unrest on the 50th episode of the 'Even More Eyes' podcast as our four critics find it difficult to maintain peace and order when discussing 'Episode II: Attack of the Clones' (2002).

While overanalysing everything from score cues to the casting of classic cinema-villain actor Christopher Lee, the four do find something more unbelievable than the aliens and Machiavellian plot manoeuvres: the romance between beset leading actors Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen.

But, after twenty years and several seasons of the animated 'The Clone Wars' series, is there anything to fall for in this middle chapter? Have our critics softened to the film, or is it still coarse, and rough, and irritating, and goes nowhere?

In preparation for the 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' series released this week, Imo and James head off to a long time ago for an infamous trilogy far, far away...the 'Star Wars' prequels.

Turmoil has engulfed the 'Even More Eyes' podcast; the first of George Lucas' prologue films is in dispute! The two wizened critics are joined by friends new and old: Eamon, a learned 'Star Wars' enthusiast well-trained in the academic arts, and Alan, the trusty rogue from the 2021 special who is determined to have his revenge.

In this first episode, the four duel it out over 'Episode I: The Phantom Menace' (1999). Discussion over sound effects leads to space politics, space politics leads to the plot, the plot leads...to suffering. But can this 'official' first step into the 'Star Wars' galaxy be redeemed, or does it remain on the dark side of cinema history?

And you don't have to wait three years for the next instalment. Hitting lightspeed, they'll be back tomorrow with 'Episode II: Attack of the Clones' and the next day with 'Episode III: Revenge of the Sith'

*Waves hand mysteriously* You don't need to do that other important thing...you can listen to this podcast episode now.

Ep # 48 - Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness [REVIEW]

Ep # 48 - Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness [REVIEW]

After a brief hiatus (recovering from 'Morbius'), James and Imo return to Marvel's ever-expanding universe in the next big-budget blockbuster: 'Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness' (2022), directed by Sam Raimi and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Rachel McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

In this spoiler-filled FILM REVIEW episode, the two critics give their verdict on Raimi's verse-hopping, horror-infused entry. Though there be madness, is there any magnificence in it? Or is the movie a multi-dimensional muddle?

In addition, they debate whether watching Disney's leading multi-stranded, multi-platformed franchise means there's still something for everybody to enjoy or whether there's too much homework involved.

So, click play and listen to their latest cinematic diagnosis!

Ep # 47 - Morbius [REVIEW]

Ep # 47 - Morbius [REVIEW]

Finishing off their 'Season of the Bat', James and Imo keep to their theme by reviewing the long-delayed, Sony-Marvel super-vampire flick 'Morbius' (2022), directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Tyrese Gibson and Al Madrigal.

With both critics having fond memories of the bloodthirsty Spider-Man anti-hero from their childhood, what do they make of this big screen origin story? Fangtastic or just mortifying?

Listen as they sink their teeth into that last man-bat movie they'll be watching for a while!

Ep # 46 - Nolan's Batman [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Ep # 46 - Nolan's Batman [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Having fallen into the depths with their Batman retrospectives, James and Imo decide to rise by finishing on the widely acclaimed 'Dark Knight' trilogy, directed by Christopher Nolan.

In a vision that started to take the concept of Batman a little...more...seriousssllly, the critics find a lot to discuss - from aesthetic appeal, intense action, engaging acting and political allegory.

They discuss how 'Batman Begins' (2005) is less restart than the start for Batman cinema; why the trilogy's towering apex 'The Dark Knight' (2008) still resonates today; and whether 'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012) was really as faltering as they remember.

Listen to our critics do what defines them...and next week, they see what happens when Sony-Marvel releases another man-bat from his cage...

Ep # 45 - Schumacher's Batman (ft. Return of the Joker) [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Ep # 45 - Schumacher's Batman (ft. Return of the Joker) [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Imo, James and the 'Bat-Fan' Alex return to discuss the mid-to-late 90's transformation of the Batman franchise under director Joel Schumacher. Brooding and burlesque are out, (neon) colour and campiness are definitely in!

What lasting impressions did 'Batman Forever' (1995) leave on our dynamic trio? And is the notorious 'Batman & Robin' (1997) really the franchise killer that leading-man George Clooney has apologised publicly for? Our critics weigh up the good, the bad and the very bad in Schumacher's entries, while also revealing what these infamous films awakened in them during their budding pre-teen years...

Flashing forward, the critics also review the first 'Batman Beyond' ('Batman of the Future' for UK listeners) straight-to-video animated feature film: 'Return of the Joker' (2000).

So, grab a drink, click that play button, and chhhiiiiiiillllll...

Ep # 44 - Burton's Batman (ft. Mask of the Phantasm) [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Ep # 44 - Burton's Batman (ft. Mask of the Phantasm) [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

James and Imo are joined by 'Bat-Fan' Alex to revisit the first feature-film adaptations of the Dark Knight - Tim Burton's 'Batman' (1989) and 'Batman Returns' (1992).

They discuss whether the quirky director's vision of the dystopian, cyberpunk-y Gotham and its dastardly denizens still holds up. And while reminiscing about the iconic 'Batman: The Animated Series' of their childhood, James and Alex find time to uncover the first animated theatrical film: 'Batman: Mask of the Phantasm' (1993).

Which one of Batman's first forays onto the silver screen flies highest and which ones are just bat-shit?

Join us for a dance with the devil in the pale moonlight!

Ep # 43 - The Batman [REVIEW]

Ep # 43 - The Batman [REVIEW]

Imo and James are back with a vengeance...and so is the famous caped crusader! They suit up (no nipples) to deliver judgement on Matt Reeves' crime-thriller iteration of 'The Batman' (2022), starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, Colin Farrell, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard and Jayme Lawson.

With its hellish aesthetic and grunge vibe, does this reboot successfully cast an impressive shadow over a franchise with an uneven cinema history, or is it as dim as its lighting design?

This is the first episode in a new season - entitled 'The Season of the Bat'- discussing the highs, lows, and very lows of the Batman films, starting with Reeves' recent version. We'll discuss Burton's originals, Schumacher's follow-ups and the influential Nolan trilogy, with a few remarks on some of the notable animated features.

Ep # 41 - Muppet Treasure Island [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Scraping the barrel for previously mentioned films on the podcast, Imo, James and Fav voyage back to 'Muppet Treasure Island' (1996).

Unlocking this 90's Muppet classic, they discuss the film's marvellous meta-ness (Matrix 4 eat your heart out!); the adult jokes they didn't get as kids; the catchy shanties, and the iconic Tim "Professional Pi-i-i-raaat" Curry. Furthermore, Fav auditions for Broadway with a rendition he's being dying to share...

Ep # 40 - God's Own Country [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

As Imo and James start to round up the year before the first anniversary of the 'Even More Eyes' podcast, they decide to gush some more over Francis Lee's 'God's Own Country' (2017).

After giving the film such a favourable reference in their review for 'Ammonite' (meaning they couldn't stop talking about it), further exploration of this raw, riveting love story was needed! They discuss how Lee's film is definitely not 'Brokeback in Yorkshire' and why it's one of the best romances of the decade...

Oh yes, this is a gusher episode all right!

Ep # 39 - The Matrix: Resurrections [REVIEW]

Ep # 39 - The Matrix: Resurrections [REVIEW]

For their first FILM REVIEW episode of 2022, Imo and James plug back into the infamous virtual hell-scape for Lana Wachowski's uncanny sequel: 'The Matrix: Resurrections' (2021), starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra, Jonathan Groff, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris and Jada Pinkett Smith.

After almost twenty years since its conclusion, do the critics think this fourth entry is as thrilling and provocative as the original trilogy or an unnecessary 'restart' of a franchise well past obsolescence? They have thoughts.

Pop that red pill (or just click to listen) and get ready to free your mind all over again!

Ep # 37 - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Ep # 37 - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse [Nostalgia Hits Differently]

Err...plot twist! Day 8 of the 7 Days of Spider-Man!

With one of our critics testing positive for COVID and finding there's No Way To The Cinema, James and Imo decide to delve into another multi-verse extravaganza instead: 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' (2018). They couldn't miss this one in good conscience!

Such a web of parallel versions, variables and meta-narratives deserves more time for the two critics to explore. They discuss each of the film's  threads: the visuals, soundtrack, themes and, at the centre of it all, Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore).

Does this film deserve to be called 'The Greatest Spider-Man Film of All Time'?
