Rant #11: Keeping healthy and fit during long show/event days
"You will never know your limits unless you push yourself to them". As the world of events started to open back up, many #eventprofs (including myself) have been packing their bags a whole lot this summer after an almost two-year downtime, and so re-learning what staying healthy while on the road and long events days remains a big priority, especially amid COVID-19. Tune into this brand new rant as I am demystifying the complex dilemma of keeping healthy, eating healthy and sticking to a fitness routine during long show days and weeks that run one into each other. Throw a fitness bodybuilding competition into the mix, and let’s see how can one handle it... PS: Do send my way your positive vibes, prayers, etc, and wish me luck as I am deep in Prep this week, in the midst of Peak Week, and I will be traveling to the WA state for the Olympic Natural INBF competition that will take place on Sept 3rd. A lot of hard work went into the package I'll be presenting on stage.  PPS: The competition went extremely well and I took home TWO First Places in INBF Debut and Masters and a medal for Open Short.  ————————— This podcast is brought to you by Tree-Fan Events, a woman-owned boutique event production agency  - and your host is Anca Trifan. ————————— Schedule your 20 min free consultation with our virtual and hybrid event experts by following this link. Rant #10: Competent vs Likable - can a boss female be both?
“Women, unlike men, are rarely perceived to be both competent and likable." Today's RANT dives deep into the likability dilemma for women leaders or boss ladies, competence vs liability, a topic very much inspired by a recent TED talk I listened to, as well as some real-world case studies and recent event experiences from the world of AV event productions. You can fill a room with studies on leadership that hail the importance of being a likable, honest, caring, and modest boss, but the truth is, as much as we talk about it, in the marketplace, that’s not what people want most. When people have a chance to choose whom to work with, and their own success depends in part on those people, a new study finds that cold competence becomes more important and likability less so. When money is on the line, in other words, most people would rather work for a very competent jerk than a nice but less competent boss.  Tune into this brand new RANT to find out where do I fall on this debate continuum and if you agree with me, or disagree. ————————— This podcast is brought to you by Tree-Fan Events, a woman-owned boutique event production agency  - and your host is Anca Trifan. ————————— Schedule your 20 min free consultation with our virtual and hybrid event experts by following this link. Rant #09: Saving Your Bacon
"No expectations, no disappointments." - Unknown Have you ever attended an event where the expectation was so high and you were left with this yucky aftertaste, because that was not what all that hype was made about, and what you experienced instead was a watered-down version of an event you had such high hopes for?  Or, you couldn't attend an event and you were so excited to attend virtually, just to be there and partake in the experience, even if digitally, only for the stream to fail, the audio to be crappy, or the networking to be inexistent because the chat was disabled and the platform didn't allow for any other type of interaction. Rant #8: Live Event Production vs Virtual Event Broadcast
“The beginning of wisdom is the definition of terms.”― Socrates. Let me ask you a question. What do you think of when you hear Live Event Production? Does that ring the same in your mind, with Virtual Event Production? Today I am on a rant to discuss the two, and then some. My hope is to demystify the differences that exist between all these digital event terms and where event production intersects with technology to deliver a fantastic event.  So, if you landed on this Rant by mistake, let me assure you: you’re in the right place, you're taking the time to learn, brush up on your skills, or even develop new skills and lay down a foundation for what could be new opportunities, and I am so glad you’re here, I appreciate you for carving this time and making the time investment for yourself, but also for your team, your clients and the future of your career in the industry. ————————— This podcast is brought to you by Tree-Fan Events, a woman-owned boutique event production agency  - and your host is Anca Trifan. ————————— Schedule your 20 min free consultation with our virtual and hybrid event experts by following this link. 73: Creating change in a segregated event industry ft Jason Brown (Vid-Live Events)
On the show with me today I have my dear event production friend, Jason Brown of Vid-Live Events, a multi-faced individual, proud of his almost two decades in the #eventproduction industry as a senior video engineer, LED engineer, projection specialist, and video project manager, all the while hustling like no other, pursuing many business and personal opportunities, such as building a real-estate empire in Las Vegas, competing in martial and body-building competitions, advancing #diversity #equity #inclusivity change and awareness wherever he goes,  I mean this guy is amazing and seems to be doing it all, and I am super stoked to have had him on the show. I’ve personally had the pleasure of working side by side with Jason on a large project down in So Cal and seeing him in action, tackling challenges head-on, troubleshooting on the fly while keeping his cool, acting like the professional he is, while also being so much fun to be around. Honesty and integrity, along with determination and dedication are indeed Jason’s guiding principles in all aspects of his life. So let’s bring him and get started. Tune into this unique brand new episode in which we demystify show prep, changing trends in video production while also tackling the tough subject of diversity and inclusivity, the challenges and barriers many of us still face in event production, but also the opportunities for growth that as event planner and producers we have to increase representation and build a better community for our events, but also for our event production teams and labor crews. ---------------- Connect with Jason on his website, on LinkedIn, or on Instagram @yournewkeyswithme __________ “Events: demystified” Podcast is brought to you by Tree-Fan Events and your Podcast Host is Anca Trifan. Rant #7: Toxic masculinity on display in AV event production
Toxic masculinity refers to the notion that some people's idea of “manliness” perpetuates domination, manipulation, and aggression. Ok, this Rant literally took me several months of consideration if I should release it or not. It's not an easy topic to address nor to talk about. In the best-case scenario, I expect to be misunderstood, maybe my motives to be called into question for releasing this episode, and for my experiences to be downplayed. Let it be so then because I know my experience is not an isolated one, and there are many women in the AV event production industry that have quietly carried the weight of their experiences and stories alone, not having the courage to speak up, or being afraid of the consequences to be paid for speaking up. The truth is, there will always be consequences, that's the reality of the times we live in, some consequences will be larger than others, some more impactful than others. I am ready to take my share by releasing this episode. You, the listener, be the judge of it and if you do identify even slightly with what I am sharing, please add your voice to the choir. Nobody should have to feel alone when sharing parts of their story. Rant #5: Event colors, emotions and moods
"Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions" - Pablo Picasso  Did you ever feel anxious in a yellow room? Does the color blue make you feel calm and relaxed?  In the 5th rant brought to you by Events: demystified Podcast, I'm making the case for color and what a powerful communication tool it is, and how it can be used to signal action, influence mood, and even influence physiological reactions. I am also sharing how I am totally fond of this one particular color that inspired higher thinking in me during a situation when I was about to unleash a nuclear amount of passion onto someone that had it coming for them.  But I didn't and I'm so proud of myself, and I'm possibly crediting my self-control to this one color that you might wanna surround yourself with, during stressful situations.  Also, this if not news, artists and interior designers have long believed to be true: color can dramatically affect moods, feelings, and emotions. However, your feelings about color are often deeply personal and rooted in your own experience or culture. Tune in to find out how a certain color has inspired a level of generosity beyond anything else I've ever seen before! Almost to the date, beginning of 2020 I was sitting down, in my studio, with IBL Events co-founder, Anna Marie Aldinger recording Episode #10 and discussing trade shows and the news of this new virus that we didn't know much about at the time... How much has our world has changed since then?  And so, circling back on the show today I have Nick Aldinger, the CEO of IBL Events, one of Idaho’s largest producers of trade shows and conferences, and we get to answer that question, as well as explore a few interesting topics during today's conversation, such as leadership lessons learned during challenging times, embracing change and finding a new business stream during a time when most event organizers, especially in the tradeshow space, struggled to stay afloat, and how do trade shows perform in the virtual event space.  ————————— You can find more about Nick here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickaldinger/ IBL Events: https://www.iblevents.com/shows ————————— “Events: demystified” Podcast is brought to you by Tree-Fan Events and your Podcast Host is Anca Trifan. Rant #4: My Event Is Better Than Yours
"I will not reason and compare: my business is to create.” - William Blake In the 4th rant brought to you by Events: demystified Podcast, I am getting a bit annoyed at everyone that pretends that their event is better than all the other events out there, regardless if it's coming from a planner, a producer, a supplier, vendor, organizer or client. If you've been in the industry for a while like I have, the chances are there's nothing new under the sun and you've seen it all.  Living under the presumption that you are the only one capable to plan, produce, execute said event, and making it so unique, the aliens would like to get your number, it's egotism and arrogance. Somewhere down the line I also go into event platforms that are just as presumptions and once you get me started there, who knows where else I'll go?  Guess you'll have to tune in and find out! And side note, the NEW series: "She said WHAT? The Rant Series" -  is where I go off the caff and say it as it is, tackling anything and everything in the AV production, technology, and event industry that not a lot of people are willing to talk about. RANT #3: Must be aware of our choice of words
"Words are free. It's how you use them that may cost you." - Unknown In this 3rd rant brought to you by Events: demystified Podcast, I am repeating myself, not because I've got nothing better to do, but because I just ran into a similar situation in which the AV supplier I was working with used the "AV guys" term several times during our conversation, even as I was visibly annoyed by how unaware they were and I couldn't wait to explain why them using those were in that context felt like an insult to me and all (not many, but still - and why is that I wonder?!) the amazing female AV techs that I have worked with for the past almost two decades of AV production. And if I must repeat myself like a broken record until everyone gets the memo, let it be so!  And side note, the NEW series: "She said WHAT? The Rant Series" -  is where I go off the caff and say it as it is, tackling anything and everything in the AV production, technology, and event industry that not a lot of people are willing to talk about. RANT #02: Flash-news: your crystal ball is broken
"Trying to predict the future is a loser's game." - Ken Liu In this 2nd rant brought to you by Events: demystified Podcast, I am questioning the logic behind some of the event decisions made to go back to in-person full-steam ahead with what seemed to have been little considerations to how the attendees might feel about it, especially the ones who are not yet comfortable to join large gatherings, yet are left without an option because your event does not give them one.  I must profess from the get-go and say that some of my passion so visibly expressed does not mean harm nor ill intentions, it is my way of expressing a ton of feelings and sentiments on any particular topic which I feel strongly about. It might come across as belligerence,  but rest assured, it is purely genuine passion because the NEW series: "She said WHAT? The Rant Series" -  is where I go off the caff and say it as it is, tackling anything and everything in the AV production, technology, and event industry that not a lot of people are willing to talk about.  This podcast is brought to you by Tree-Fan Events, a woman-owned boutique event production agency  - and your host is Anca Trifan. ————————— Schedule your 20 min free consultation with our virtual and hybrid event experts by following this link. RANT #01: Who the heck have I become?
“Who in the world am I? Ah, that's the great puzzle.” ― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland Welcome to Events: demystified Podcast's NEW series: "She said WHAT? The Rant Series" -  where I go off the caff and say it as it is, tackling anything and everything in the AV production, technology, and event industry that not a lot of people are willing to talk about. The Rant Series is short and spicy, comes out twice a month, in between the more tamed interview-style episodes. Today I'm tackling the hard task of figuring out what the hell did I turn from being pretty much a rockstar to a corporate 'suit', and was this turn a good or a bad one. Stay tuned as I shared, never shared before, spicy details from my 'rockstar days', all the way back to my radio Dj-ing days. S4_56: Well, hello there 2022! Here's my manifesto ft Anca Trifan, CMP, DES (V)
First off, Happy New Year (crossing fingers it's still "happy"). Secondly, welcome to our FOURTH Season, how awesome is that! Since I decided to do something new and get off the hamster wheel where every podcast in this space is sharing what they hope the 2022 trends might be for the industry, I will just share my heart and what my hope is for this new Podcast season and brand new year. If you can take a bit of raw sharing with a small side of rambling, I will take you on a journey of what 2022 might look like for you, our loyal audience! And since I'm not a grinch (not that I know of), here's a link to 2022 Event Trends for your reading's enjoyment. “Events: demystified” Podcast is brought to you by Tree-Fan Events and your Podcast Host is Anca Trifan. ————————— You can find connect with me on here, as well as on LinkedIn and on social @treefan_events.  ————————— For event and podcast updates, tips, and tricks of the trades, find the podcast at these links: Website: https://eventsdemystified.com/ Email me: podcast at treefanevents.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/eventsdemystifiedpodcast  ————————— Tree-Fan Events offers Hybrid Event Production Services: https://treefanevents.com/hybrid-event-services/  ————————— If you like our podcast, please show us some love by subscribing to this podcast on your favorite listening platform and following us on Instagram.  By leaving a great review and hitting the 5  stars, you make this Podcast visible to other listeners with the same interests as you. 55: 2021 Year in "Rearview" Thoughts ft Anca Trifan (Tree-Fan Events)
As we approach the final days of 2021, I am incredibly grateful, inspired by, and proud of the remarkable people who make up the event industry. In this episode, I will cover seven main takeaways from the many episodes recorded and conversations had, one of the main takeaways being:  "Don’t forget the things you’ve learned in 2021".  But I have also taken the liberty to go somewhat rogue and expressed some of my professional challenges, something I have never talked about on this podcast.  This past year has tested me in so many ways, from losing family members to COVID to losing young girlfriends to cancer, to having to rebuild my business from the ground up, but it has also tested us as industry professionals in ways other people did not experience nor understand. This has not been easy, and however, as I sit and reflect today, I remain in awe of each of our clients, partners, listeners, and our event industry as a whole.  We had all hoped that we would launch into 2022 with excitement, hope, and positivity…  ready to set fear and uncertainty aside.  We are far more prepared for the challenges that lay ahead, and while it can be scary and frustrating to be faced again with yet another uncertainty, this is a fight we will not lose. Every event I've worked on requires a diverse team in order for that project to be successful, and many events turned out to be a 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle; and in order for all the pieces to fit in the right place, we must have the right partners around us in order to create pictures and tell stories that create impactful and memorable experiences.  Once that happens, what a gift that is, to our clients, and all those in attendance that are impacted tremendously. So, while it may not be how we believed 2021 would end and 2022 would unfold, we remain hopeful that this is just another bump in the road. Thank you for your commitment to my small but fierce production agency and to this podcast.  My wish for each of you is that these last days of this year and the first of 2022 find you surrounded by those whom you love and fill your heart with joy: your family, friends, and even co-workers, celebrating what is most important and what you're passionate about.  Without you, I could not do what we are doing over here. Your ongoing loyalty, your feedback, and your donations are what fuels our efforts, and we thank you in advance for your continued support. On today’s episode I have Dan Berger, the Founder and former CEO of Social Tables - and if you’ve been in events for at least a day, you’ve most likely heard and used Social Tables for your events - which he sold to Cvent in October of 2018. Communities should feel exclusive to those who are a part of them. Why? Part of who we are is defined by who we aren’t. When everyone belongs, no one belongs." 19: A helpful fundraising platform for your upcoming Virtual Fundraiser: Auctria
Welcome to our new episode this month!  Today my goal is to introduce to you a helpful tool with a great number of features to assist in raising much needed funds during this pandemic via virtual fundraising, and for that, guess what, I have a surprise for you! I have another guest with me today  and we will be talking about this tool that any organization that is looking to fundraise and raise much needed funds needs to know about. This episode is very much targeted towards the nonprofit sector more so than our general thematic episodes where we talk about event and audio-visual productions, but even so and even if this is not necessarily your interest point, I believe there will be a lot of opportunities to learn about something that normally is not part of your repertoire, if you may, so tag along and maybe learn a thing or two, and in the wise words of Jack Lewmann, “Never stop learning, for when we stop learning, we stop growing”. --------------------------- You can learn more about Auctria at: https://www.auctria.com/features/ and on Instagram @auctria, Pinterest @auctria, Facebook Group: Auction Team Talk --------------------------- For event and podcast updates, tips and tricks of the trades, find us on Social Media on these channels: Podcast Link: https://treefanevents.com/podcasts/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/treefan_events/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TreeFanEvents/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/treefan_events  I welcome your feedback and suggestions via social media direct messaging or email at podcast@treefanevents.com If you liked what you heard, please show us some love by subscribing to this podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or your favorite listening platform.
