The Everyman Movie Review is a different kind of movie commentary - it's not about the art of movie-making, but rather about the enjoyment and entertainment of the film itself. It's not about me or my opinion, it's about the movie - does it deliver on what it promises?
I've been a movie fan my entire life. I'm such a 'fan' - I gave up a lucrative legal career on the east coast and moved to Hollywood to be a part of it. And here I am, living the dream, recording reviews for the internet.
But seriously, I was tired of the reviews where the reviewer was more worried about themselves than the mov

Weird to say, but theres a DIRTIER side to debt collection? - Buffaloed - EMMR (Zoey Deutch, Jai Courtney, Judy Greer, Jermaine Fowler)

Episode 114 of the Everyman Movie Review!

It's rare that a movie makes me think of home as much as Buffaloed did - despite a HUGE oversight (that I get into in the episode) but I could have taken many of those characters directly from my own past. It's also rare that I am entertained while learning about something as complex and boring as debt collection - but I was. It felt like this movie was firing on all cylinders.

COINTELPRO - The White House Wife Edition - Seberg - EMMR (Kristen Stewart, Vince Vaughn, Stephen Root, Anthony Mackie, Zazie Beetz)

Episode 113 of the Everyman Movie Review!

I wasn't sure what to think about Seberg - it wasn't a story I had heard before, despite being very interested in that period in history. Also - not the biggest fan of Kristen Stewart. But, I decided to give it a whirl - I figured Anthony Mackey, Vince Vaughn, and Stephen Root wouldn't steer me wrong.

If you have to ask, you can't afford to wash here - The Laundromat - EMMR (Steven Soderbergh, Jake Bernstein, Scott Z. Burns, Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, Meryl Streep)

Episode 112 of the Everyman Movie Review!

Yet another movie I should have seen in theaters, and should have made more of a priority - The Laundromat. Some of you may be too young to remember the Panama Papers - since it was only in the news for about 15 mins, but I remember it rocked me when I found out. I figured, the movie version airing the dirty laundry would be just as good.

If you don't like this movie, definitely don't research the NDAA - The Torture Report - EMMR (Adam Driver, Corey Stoll, Jon Hamm, Annette Bening)

Episode 111 of the Everyman Movie Review!

So - a note at the beginning - I am clearly sleep deprived because I called this movie the "Terror" Report multiple times in the episode and even in the title card. Sorry about that, it's obviously titled...

The Torture Report is YET another movie I regret not seeing on the big screen when I could. It came our originally last fall, and this fall came to streaming on Amazon. It's exactly the kinda movie for me - political thriller based on true events. I'm not the hugest fan of Adam Driver (my Tom Hanks) but I figured I would give it a try.

Napoleon Dynamite is all grown up & depressed - When Jon Tried to Save the World - EMMR (Jon Heder, Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle, Jim O'Heir, Steve Berg))

Episode 110 of the Everyman Movie Review!

I, like everyone, loved Napoleon Dynamite. I saw the title of this week's movie (When Jeff Tried to Save the World) and thought it was an end of the world movie; they're in pretty heavy rotation for me right now. But I was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't exactly what I was expected. Then, I realized it was starring Jon Heder, Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle, Jim O'Heir,  and Steve Berg - seemed like a can't miss!

WHAT did I just watch - I'm Thinking Of Ending Things - EMMR (Jessie Buckley, Charlie Kaufman, Jessie Plemmons)

Episode 109 of the Everyman Movie Review!

This will not be a normal review because this is not a normal movie - the Spoilers section is longer than EVERYTHING else. But - if you've seen a Charlie Kaufman movie before (Adaptation, Being Jon Malkovich) you may understand why. Trust me, trials are usually not that interesting - EMMR - Trial of the Chicago 7 (Aaron Sorkin, Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, John Carroll Lynch, Joseph Gordon Levitt)

Episode 108 of the Everyman Movie Review!

I'm a huge fan of Aaron Sorkin's writing. I was somewhat disappointed with his directorial debut in "Molly's Game" but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, especially with the likes off Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen, John Carroll Lynch, and Joseph Gordon Levitt in a movie about the '68 Chicago Riots and the Chicago 7. So, I jumped into this new release from Netflix.

A lot of you may have never heard of Slenderman... or you may only know of the murder story out of Wisconsin - this isn't that. Is this the PERFECT Halloween film?- Hubie Halloween - EMMR (Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Julie Bowen)

Episode 105 of the Everyman Movie Review!

I've never been a HUGE fan of Adam Sandler -  his movies anyway (I'll explain why I'm insanely jealous of his career). But a Sandler movie can be perfect when you have a big group of people with very differing interests (and the veto vote steps out for an errand). Shine you say? Can I hide it under a bushel? - Doctor Sleep - EMMR (Ewan McGregor, Steven King)

Episode 104 of the Everyman Movie Review!

A Halloween Special! To celebrate, for the next three episodes, we're covering some scary/Halloween themed movies. Up First: Doctor Sleep
The Shining terrified me as a kid - like literal scars - but I guess Steven King knows his way around terror. Like Danny, I'm all grown up now, but Ewan McGregor takes it all in stride way better than I ever could. A sequel to a cinema classic seems like it can't miss.

When you find your musical soul mate, you just know - Blinded By The Light - EMMR (Viveik Kalra, Dean-Charles Chapman, Kit Reeve, Rob Brydon)

Episode 102 of the Everyman Movie Review!

I should have seen Blinded by the Light in theaters. We went at least 4 times with it as one of the options, but something always came first. Then - we lost theaters forever. Well, maybe not forever, but it seems that long in LA. And I will forever regret not seeing this movie on the big screen - the one that got away for sure. It's not the Al Capone you think you know - Capone - EMMR (Josh Trank, Tom Hardy, Linda Cardellini, Matt Dillon)

Episode 101 of the Everyman Movie Review!

Capone will be a lesson to me about the finickiness of the industry that I want so much to be a part of. Josh Trank was one of the hottest up and coming filmmakers. Then, he had an incident with his first big-budget movie Fantastic Four. He laid low, and got a chance to redeem himself with another fantastic script and a cast with the likes of Tom Hardy (arguably the greatest actor of our generation), Linda Carellini, Matt Dillon, and Noel Fisher. Then - the universe intervened and theaters were closed a month prior to its release. But even if it's only ever available on streaming, the cast and subject got me excited about this one.

Episode 101 of the Everyman Movie Review!

Shifting gears from the "actors out of their element" we're going into a series of historical stories you should know, told in an interesting way.
I always knew the "story" of how Frankenstein was written - but I didn't know the half of it. The tale of Mary Shelley was SO much more. AND - featuring Elle Fanning, Bel Powley, Douglas Booth, Maisie Williams, Tom Sturridge, and Ben Hardy - seems like a can't miss!

Episode 97 of the Everyman Movie Review!

I gave a brief explainer at the beginning of the episode, but for the next few, we'll be working around a theme: Actors Out of their Element.
We start off with Daniel Radcliffe - the action star? Not to mention disheveled and crazy-eyed Samara Weaving! Guns Akimbo is a 1980s shoot-em-up movie - set in a "dystopian" (that word seems strangely meaningless these days) future where guns and technology are blended into an online survival game - which is nothing like the description of the movie - but seemed fun ane entertaining none-the-less.

If you ever wanted a look behind the scenes of the "glamourous" life of someone at the entry point of the entertainment industry - The Assistant is it. If you love Julia Garner (from Ozarks), you may love The Assistant - although you may not recognize her. The city was buzzing about this movie, so when I saw it was available on streaming, I jumped at the chance to give it a viewing.

Save the music, Save the world! - Bill and Ted Face the Music - EMMR (Keanu Reeves, Alex Winters, Kristin Schaal, Samara Weaving, Brigette Lundy-Paine, William Sadler, Anthony Carrigan)

Episode 91 of the Everyman Movie Review!

It seems as though the nostalgia train isn't done with 2020. Earlier this year, we returned to Redbank, NJ and the world of Jay & Silent Bob - this week, we're returning to San Dimas and the Great Ones who will save us all: William "Bill" S. Preston Esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan. I realize that most of the movie industry is essentially catering to me and people like me - those in their late 30s or early 40s with money to burn... and it makes me very, very happy. A return to the tales of two metalhead slacker friends who travel through time? Seems most excellent!

I screwed up - so call this a BONUS episode! - EMMR - The Florida Project (Brooklynn Prince, Bria Vinaite, Willem Dafoe, Sean Baker, Mela Murder, Christopher Rivera, Aiden Malik)

This was supposed to be Episode 30 of the Everyman Movie Review released way back on January 26th, 2020 as part of "Sean Baker Week". But, apparently, it never went live and I didn't notice *facepalm* SO! I figured, why not post it anyway as a BONUS for this week. Last week, you got the preview episodes of my newest podcast. This week, its more EMMR.

Sean Baker week continues with his major motion picture debut - The Florida Project. Baker moves 3000 miles away from the setting of his last movie to place this story in the Kissimmee/Orlando area of Florida - just outside of the Magic Kingdom. I remember the town being all aflutter about his production (and Willam Dafoe's performance) so I was looking forward to checking it out.

Was I pleasantly surprised? Check out the episode to find out!

A slice of PIZZA led to all this? Sbarro's doesn't mess around - EMMR - Bad Education - (Hugh Jackman, Allison Janey, Ray Romano)

Episode 90 of the Everyman Movie Review!

The second time is/so much better, baby/(The second time around)

I originally did a review of Bad Education back in April when it first came to HBO - BUT - thanks to an issue with the audio, it never saw the light of day outside of my Patreon Supporters. But - it's SUCH a great movie, so I thought I would revisit and re-record the episode. After all, it is back to school time - so its appropriate - and with a cast that includes Hugh Jackman, Allison Janey, Ray Ramano and more - it seemed like a can't miss.

Life in Suburbia? Now this IS my hell - EMMR - Vivarium (Imogen Poots, Jesse Eisenberg)

Episode 89 of the Everyman Movie Review!

This episode is semi-by request. A friend of the shown asked if I had seen Vivarium yet and asked my thoughts (since there wasn't an episode out. Instead of waxing poetic there, I bumped up my review and now everyone can hear me... wax poetic. I love weird, quirky movies and boy does Vivarium fit the bill. I DO NOT miss being a teenager... YIKES - EMMR - Chemical Hearts (Lili Reinhart, Austin Abrams, Sarah Jones)

Episode 88 of the Everyman Movie Review!

I have a soft spot for Lili Reinhart, just generally speaking. I'm usually going to be on-board for anything she's a part of - and that means having to be up for Rom-Coms. A side benefit is, its a movie that everyone in the house can agree on as well - rather than a compromise (like usual). Another plus - ITS SOMETHING NEW! So, when Chemical Hearts popped up in the recommended list, it immediately went into the queue.

Existential Mario Brothers, low budget Palm Springs, or just weird? - EMMR - Every Time I Die (Marc Menchaca, Drew Fonteiro, Tyler Fleming)

Episode 87 of the Everyman Movie Review!

Watching Palm Spring reminded me of a movie I saw back at the beginning of quarantine. Not that they are the same movie - or even similar - but maybe just the repeating nature of the storyline. Every Time I Die is definitely that. It's a quirky, short movie - that is high concept and takes on a complicated topic. Semi-sci-fi/semi-horror/semi-thriller - it checks a lot of the boxes that would appeal to me as a movie. Probably why it was recommended to me.

Your Heaven is someone else's Hell - EMMR - Palm Springs (Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, J.K. Simmons, Peter Gallagher, Meredith Hagner, Camila Mendes)

I didn't see ANY marketing for Palm Springs - I just heard the post-Sundance hype about it. I got an alert that it was available on Hulu so I planned to watch it. Whatever I thought I was getting into - I was wrong. It turned out to be way different, but was it worth my time - AND - the highest selling price ever at Sundance? THURSDAY DOUBLE FEATURE

I am a fan of everyone involved in this show - Kevin Hart, John Travolta, Nathalie Emmanuel, Josh Hartnett - so I figured, a comedic spoof of Die Hard? What's not to like - the marketing for this show missed the mark. I'll explain why in the review./p>

Everyman Movie Review - When The Street Lights Go On

Everyman Movie Review - When The Street Lights Go On

Episode 78 of the Everyman Movie Review!

I was not expecting what I got from When the Street Lights Go On. Aside from the performances of Ben Ahlers, Julia Sarah Stone, Sam Strike, Sophie Thatcher, and Chosen Jacobs - Rebecca Thatchers nostalgic return to the 1990s was far more thriller than heart-warming. Still, Quibi's short episode style kept me going through the finale.

Everyman Movie Review - Most Dangerous Game

Episode 76 of the Everyman Movie Review!

Most Dangerous Game is one of the shows that drew me to Quibi as a platform. I love the concept that is embodied by the show - and maybe part of me thinks I could compete and survive. But I am definitely not Liam Hemsworth - and he barely gets out of episode 2.

Everyman Movie Review - The King of Staten Island

Episode 74 of the Everyman Movie Review!

I have been following the story of Pete Davidson for a few years now. I see so much of myself in him and how he talks about his life - just with way less weed. I had heard that there was a semi-biographical movie coming out about him directed by Judd Apatow, but with everything going on in the world, I assumed it would be delayed. I live in the Google-verse: Pixel phone, Chrome for browsing, etc. So - I heard about Apple TV, but it was in some ways outside of my universe. BUT - I had a few days to peruse the selections on AppleTV+ and I was BLOWN AWAY by some of the limited series on the platform. I decided you should hear about these selections and check them out.

For All Mankind was one of the shows that drew me to check out Apple TV + - almost solely the phrase "Red Moon". I LOVE the Alternative History genre - movies, books, ANYTHING - so I was immediately drawn in to an Alternate History Space Series.

Was I disappointed? Check out the episode to find out!

For All Mankind on Apple TV.

The Everyman Movie Review is a different kind of movie commentary - it's not about the art of movie-making, but rather about the enjoyment and entertainment of the film itself. It's not about me or my opinion, it's about the movie - does it deliver on what it promises?

Everyman Movie Review - Servant

Episode 69 of the Everyman Movie Review!

First up - Servant. Purported to be from M. Night Shaymalan - a psychological thriller that involves the supernatural and a baby? My skin is already crawling. BUT - I also saw Lady In The Water so... I remained hesitant.

Was I disappointed? Check out the episode to find out!

Everyman Movie Review - I Love You, Now Die

Everyman Movie Review - I Love You, Now Die

Episode 68 of the Everyman Movie Review!

I'm not usually one for true-crime. I do listen to some podcasts and the occasional documentary - but the subject matter of this particular documentary hit me just right. A side of my old legal brain and the other one of my problem solving one. Also - a movie that I could agree on with my significant other... even if it almost caused a breakup.

Was I disappointed? Check out the episode to find out!
