Jim Pocta on Power and Sexuality
How does power relate to our sexuality? How does our sexuality relate to our identity? In many ways, those questions are fundamental to how we think about and engage in the culture war in our time. As conscientious objectors to the culture wars, here at Everything Just Changed, we are trying to find an alternative to navigate and discuss these important and yet very contentious issues—a way that is generous, grounded in grace, and doesn’t involved condemning those we disagree with.
Today we’re talking with Jim Pocta about his own story and the way that sexuality has been central in both his life and his work. Jim is a counselor in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and the author of a forthcoming book on Christianity and sexuality. If you're interested in learning more about the PCA's study report on human sexuality that Jim mentions in our conversation, you can find that report, as well as a video summarizing it, here.

Elizabeth Neumann on Ukraine and the Power of Disinformation
We thought we were wrapping up this series, but as Russia invaded Ukraine last week, we wanted to explore the power dynamics playing out in real time. So we’re talking again with our friend and former Department of Homeland Security official Elizabeth Neuman, about the way disinformation has been used as a weapon of power in the run-up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Join the conversation on our Facebook group and let us know what changed for you after listening to this episode.
Alex Jun on Power and Race
We’ve been exploring the issue of power over our last several episodes, and we’re doing this because we want to help Christians and those interested in Christianity learn to steward power wisely, and that means learning to understand and distinguish between what is biblical and theologically driven, on the one hand, and what is merely a cultural assertion.
One area where the church has struggled the most to understand and navigate that distinction, is when it comes to the topic of race. Today we're talking with Dr. Alex Jun about race and power, Dr. Jun is a professor of Higher Education at Azusa Pacific University, and former moderator of the Presbyterian Church in America.
After you've finished the episode, let us know what just changed for you? Head over to our Facebook group and leave us a comment.
Mike Cosper on Power and the Rise and Fall of Mars Hill
With millions of downloads you’ve likely heard of The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill, a podcast about the abuse of power. But now that it’s over what does its creator, Mike Cosper, think about power? And how did he steward his own cultural power in the midst of telling the story about power’s abuse? This week we're talking with Mike Cosper about the podcast, some of the questions we've wondered about while listening to this story, and about what Mike learned from diving in to the power dynamics at Mars Hill.
We'd love to hear from you:
- What changed for you after listening to this episode?
- Did your perspective on The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill change after hearing this conversation?
- And we get ready to wrap up this series on power, what questions are you asking about power, what have we missed?

Elizabeth Neumann on the Power of Information
We’re living in a time where, for some people the concept of truth is merely a power play, while others seek to use truth to advance their own ends. We’re having a series of conversations about power as we seek to understand why power has become such an explosive topic in our time, and we’re hoping to understand what it would look like to recover a Christian approach to power.
Today we’re talking with former Department of Homeland Security official Elizabeth Neumann about information and misinformation, and the way information has been marshaled in the service of power in our cultural moment.
Join the conversation on our Facebook group and let us know what changed for you after listening to this episode.
Dr. Diane Langberg on Redeeming Power
Often when we think about power, we think of it only in it’s negative connotations, we think about the misuse of power, and the ways that power is used to hurt others. But what does it looks like, not just to use power in good and life-giving ways, but to redeem power, to correct its misuse?
Today Bryce and Brad talk with Dr. Diane Langberg about her new book, Redeeming Power: Understanding Authority and Abuse in the Church. We talk with Dr. Langberg about her work in counseling those who have been the victims of abuse, and about how she maintains hope while walking with others through very difficult circumstance.
After you listen to the episode, let us know "what just changed for you?" Leave a comment in our Facebook group and let us know.
David French on Cultural Power in a Turbulent Time
This week David French joins us again to help us understand power in a rapidly changing cultural context. And we really want to hear from you.... What changed for you after listening to our conversation with David French? Did you love it, or hate it? Let us know why at our new Facebook group.
This will be our last episode for the year, so make sure to subscribe if you haven't already. We'll be back on January 3rd, talking with author and psychologist Dr. Diane Langberg about power and abuse as we continue our series about power, the church, and the culture.
Russell Moore on Power and Christianity
Today we’re talking with Dr. Russell Moore about power in the Christian church, and about the way the church wields power at a time when it seems to be loosing cultural influence.
Russell Moore, is Public Theologian at Christianity Today and Director of Christianity Today’s Public Theology Project.
The Wall Street Journal has called Moore “vigorous, cheerful, and fiercely articulate.” He was named in 2017 to Politico Magazine’s list of top fifty influence-makers in Washington, and has been profiled by such publications as the Washington Post and the New Yorker.
Russell was President of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention from 2013 to 2021. Prior to that role, Moore served as provost and dean of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, where he also taught theology and ethics.
Dr. Moore is the author of several books, including The Courage to Stand: Facing Your Fear Without Losing Your Soul, Onward: Engaging the Culture without Losing the Gospel and The Storm-Tossed Family: How the Cross Reshapes the Home. Kyle Strobel on the Use and Abuse of Power in the Church
Have you witnessed abuse of power in the church? Maybe you haven’t witnessed abuse of power, but you’ve seen everyone talking about it online recently and you’re wondering why it’s getting so much attention. Maybe you’re a pastor and you’re working hard to love and lead your church but you’re wondering if the outrage machine will turn its sights on you next. Today on Everything Just Changed, Bryce talks with professor and author Kyle Strobel about this use and abuse of power, and what it might look like to recover a Christian understanding of power in our time.
Kyle Strobel teaches spiritual theology for Talbot’s Institute for Spiritual Formation at Biola University. He’s the author of The Way of the Dragon or the Way of the Lamb. Kyle mentioned the best place to get a copy is at wayofthedragonbook.com.
We'd love to know what changed for you after listening to this episode, let us know on Facebook!
Questioning Power
This week Bryce and Brad continue their series on power. What is power and why has it become some a contentious topic? How did we go so long ignoring the questions that power raises? In this episode we're asking the questions that power raises for us, questions that we'll explore in the rest of this series as we talk with authors and experts. We'd love to hear your questions around the topic of power as well, we've created a new Facebook group to connect with other listeners, join us!
Power and Perspectivalism
Maybe you’ve listened to The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill podcast and at every turn, power seems to be abused in service to celebrity. Maybe you’ve even seen this dynamic up close. With leaders both in the church and outside it misusing power for improper ends, what are we to do as the church in the West?
Today we’re starting a new series on power because we believe that power by itself isn’t evil. Rather, the question for us is how to use power well, in life-giving and gospel-centered ways. In this series Bryce and Brad Edwards will be your guides, talking with authors and experts about power and what the heck is going on in the world. Today we're kicking off this series asking what we might be missing that is making it so hard to talk about power.
Bonus Episode: Revisiting the 6 Way Fragmentation of Evangelicalism with author Michael Graham
On our last episode, Bryce and Brad talked about The Six Way Fracturing of Evangelicalism, an article by Michael Graham and Skyler Flowers, and posited that sociology, not theology, is driving the current tumult in the church. Many of you reached out to let us know you appreciated the episode (thanks!), one of whom was author Michael Graham himself. So as we launch a new series of episode of Everything Just Changed, Brad and Bryce talked with Michael about what lead him to write his article, and what unique challenges and opportunities face Christians who seek to be faithful to Scripture while navigating our chaotic culture with nuance.
If you haven't listened to our previous episode Theology or Sociology: What's Driving Divisions Within Christianity?, you'll want to listen to that first.
Theology or Sociology: What's Driving Divisions Within Christianity?
This week Bryce and Brad wrap up season 3 of the podcast, talking about the fracturing of evangelicalism, whether this fracturing is being driven by theological or sociological concerns, and Michael Graham's excellent article on the subject. We also also reflect on a year and a half of recording the podcast and some changes as we move forward. We'd love to hear from you, please leave us a comment at kingandkingdom.community.
Michael Wear on Politics and Faith
If you feel like you are politically homeless in this time of polarization, and you’re hopeful that faith in Jesus might be a stabilizing force in a tumultuous cultural moment, our interview today is gonna be a breath of fresh air. Brad and I are talking with Michael Wear about politics and faith, and how Michael remains hopeful when politics has taken on the weight of identity for so many Christians.
We’d love to know what changed for you after listening to this conversation? Let us know at kingandkingdom.community.
If you’re interested in connecting with Micheal, you can find him on Substack and Twitter.
Jackson Wu on Shame and the Gospel
Dr. Jackson Wu is the theologian in residence at Mission One in Phoenix, AZ. His 15 years spent as a missionary and training church planters in East Asia gives him a unique perspective on Western Christianity, and especially - you guessed it - Individualism. We cover a LOT of ground, including: the “decolonizing” language that’s part of our Deconstruction “moment,” the inherent tension between “belonging” and our Individuality, and how American Evangelicalism’s hyper-focus on Individualism precludes the Gospel’s resolution of unaddressed shame.

Kyle Strobel on Spiritual Formation
As we continue to explore issues related to identity formation in the modern world, today we're moving beyond simply diagnosing the problem. We're talking with Kyle Strobel, professor of systematic theology at Talbot School of Theology, and the author of many books, including most recently When Prayer Becomes Real. We talk with Kyle about what spiritual formation is, and the way the Spirit works through his church to give and shape the identities of Christians.
President Barry Corey on Healthy Institutions
Our search for a solution to the problem of radical individualism has brought us to a surprising place: the need for healthy institutions. Today we're talking with Dr. Barry Corey, President of Biola University, about the role institutions of Christian higher education play in identity formation, and the way their work has been disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Stephen Moss on Same Sex Attraction, Revoice, and the Importance of the Church
As we continue to explore issues of identity formation, today we're talking about sexuality and same sex attraction. Our guest is Stephen Moss, a same-sex attracted celibate Christian. In 2018 Stephen was one of the founders of the Revoice conference, which sought to provide a gathering place for "Side B" christians, and also ended up embroiled in controversy in some circles within the evangelical church. Stephen talks with us about his own story, the way the church shepherded him in his journey, and his eventual decision to step away from the organization that he helped found.
Note: this episode touches on issues and controversy within the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) where Bryce and Brad are both pastors, and Stephen is a member.
Alan Noble on the way Institutions Support the Church
As western culture is struggling through issues of polarization and the weaponization of politics, we've been highlighting the ways the individualism—this idea that you can be anything you want to be as long as you remain true to yourself—is eroding western society from both the right and left. In a recent article, Dr. Alan Noble writes that "The default evangelical response to cultural decay has been to redouble our culture war efforts: elect people who will better pursue our agenda, boycott and denounce attacks on our values, and so on. And while I would be the last to dismiss the importance of Christian political participation and cultural criticism, I do worry that these focuses can distract us from the more basic work that needs to be done. We need to shore up the ruins." In this episode of Everything Just Changed, Brad and Bryce talk with Alan Noble about his article, and the way that institution building provides us a path through and beyond the culture wars.
Brandon O'Brien on Western Individualism
Today on Everything Just Changed, Brad sits down with Brandon Obrien. Brandon is the author of several books, including Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes, and Not From Around Here: What Unites Us, What Divides Us, and How We Can Move Forward. In this season of our podcast we’re exploring themes related to spiritual formation, and the way that western individualism is really derailing the church’s attempts to do the work of discipleship that Jesus calls us to do. In this conversation, Brad and Brandon explore the ways this is playing our in our cultural moment, and look for a way forward…
Carl Trueman on The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self
This week Bryce and Brad talk with Professor Carl Trueman about his new book, The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self, and the way the roots of individualism have crept in to both secularism and Christianity. We also ask Dr. Trueman about his gracious tone in this book and whether it represents a shift in focus in his work.
Gospel Identity (Part 2)
Picking up where we left off last week, Bryce and Brad continue to explore the way a gospel identity differs from both the modern and traditional approaches to identity formation. In Part 1 we talked about what a gospel identity is, and began exploring what makes it unique. In this episode we continue with 2 more reasons it's unique, and then talk about how a gospel identity grows.

Gospel Identity (Part 1)
This season on Everything Just Changed we're exploring the issue of identity and asking "how do we received rather than achieve our identity?" Last we we looked at the 2 common ways humans throughout history have through about identity--the traditional and modern approaches--in which our dignity, value and worth must be achieved through what we do. Today we'll look at he biblical alternative--receiving our identity from God himself.

Deconstruction Roundtable
After an unexpectedly lively (some might even say “spicy”) twitter discussion on the topic of ‘Deconstruction,’ Brad invited a few of the most irenic and pastoral participants to a roundtable discussion exploring the roots, diversity, and common denominators among what feels like an evolution or revival connected to the ‘Skepticism’ of yesteryear. Listen in as they explore the different expressions of deconstruction, validate frustration with evangelicalism, the (ironic) Western/Individualist roots, and most importantly: ways to respond pastorally with truth and love.
Guests on this special bonus episode include Ian Harber, Michael Agapito, and Brookes Jones.
How Did We Get Here?
As we ask the question "How do we receive, rather than achieve, our identity?" in this season, we're digging into the roots of identity formation. What does it mean to be a self? Where do we source our security and significance? Modern people instinctively look within themselves to answer these questions...but is this the only way to do it? Is it the best way?

As we help you navigate faithfulness to Jesus in a post-Christian and post-pandemic world, we are dedicating season 3 to answering the question "how do we receive, rather than achieve, our identity?" In episode 1 of this season, Brad and Bryce give some context to this question by exploring what has, and more importantly going forward, what hasn't changed, since the Covid 19 pandemic interrupted our lives a year ago.

In Part 2 of this conversation, we’re exploring the resources the gospel gives us to live as non-anxious people in a world that’s going mad.
