The Prayer She Whispered

The Prayer She Whispered

Join Dr. Sami and Nikki Brown as we discuss her experience with pregnancy, birth, postpartum, dating, marriage, race, sexual orientation, sexuality, poetry, her podcast, "The Prayer She Whispered", and, literally, everything under the rainbow!

TW: sexual assault, child abuse, child sex trafficking.

I have known Nikki for a few years, my husband was a close friend of her husband. Through the years that I've known Nikki, she has unintentionally helped me learn about my biases through digestible social media content and deep conversations. Nikki was also a voice of reason after my husband died. In blunt but kind words, Nikki told me that the coping mechanisms I was using to deal with the death of Justin were unhealthy and unsustainable. She helped pull me out of the deep end in one of the hardest parts of my life. I have a deep appreciation of Nikki as a person and in this episode, she touches on so many important issues. I'm so lucky to know Nikki. I can't wait for you all to get to know her a little bit as well.

Columbia College double alumna, Jennequia "Nikki" Brown, MA, works with and serves children and youth who have been abused and neglected, and champions services for children who have been victimized by human Trafficking.  Nikki is an active voice in her community as an advocate for children and women,  poet,  public speaker, and Podcaster of The Prayer She Whispered. Follow @ThePrayerSheWhispered on Facebook and @ThePrayerWhisperer on Instagram for new work from Nikki and updates about the podcast.

Dr. Montakhab Foundation

Dr. Montakhab Foundation

Join Dr. Sami as she speaks with Kevin Mortazavi about being queer, badass great-grandmothers, Kevin's non-profit, medical student hardships, the importance of being an empathetic healthcare provider with knowledge on LGBTQIA+ people, how to build a non-profit, being a minority and gay in the medical community, and literally everything under the rainbow!

Kevin Mortazavi (he/him/his) is currently a MD candidate at University of California, Davis where he is involved in advocacy to reduce the health inequities faced by the LGBTQ+ community and improve access to reproductive and abortion care. Before attending medical school, he graduated cum laude in neuroscience from the University of California, Riverside and completed a master’s in public mental health, health disparities, and health inequalities at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. After completing his MD, he intends to continue his medical training to become an Emergency Medicine physician followed by law school. He aspires to use his medical, public health, and legal expertise to advocate for policy reform to improve the health, socioeconomic standing, and quality of life for marginalized communities. In addition to his work in healthcare, Kevin established The Dr. Montakhab Foundation in memory of his great-grandmother who was a revolutionary embryologist. This non-profit provides scholarships and helps empower women, refugees, and non-traditional students in STEM by reducing the economic burden of higher education and mentoring their scholarship recipients. To date they have donated over $26,000 to establish such scholarships and have committed to donating another $10,000 in 2021. Presently, they continue to seek donors so that they may continue their efforts to reduce barriers to higher education. The Gender Unicorn

The Gender Unicorn

Join Dr. Sami and Michael J Cavan in this weeks episode of Everything Under the Rainbow Podcast as we talk about coming out, history of trans folx in the military, transphobia and toxic masculinity in LGBTQIA+ spaces, shortcomings of the US medical community relating to transgender health, relationships, the gender unicorn and literally everything under the rainbow.

Michael J Cavan (he/him/his), identifies as an androgynous, omnisexual, transgender male. He currently works at Starbucks as a shift manager and is a full time psychology student who plans to get his master’s degree in Clinical Psychology. His goal is to use his degrees and life experience from being out and open for 10 years to help other members of the LGBTQ+ community in need of a support system, or in need of a resource along their own journey.

Michael began his transition 10 years ago. “No one was there for me when I started to transition. Where I come from, being transgender was unheard of, so I had no knowledge or help with what I was feeling. That caused me to feel alone and detached from the world, a feeling I never want anyone else to feel. While going back to school at 28 wasn’t what I expected, I welcome the challenge and look forward to the journey to come to ensure that I can be an advocate and assistance to my fellow LGBTQ+ community members.” You can chat with Michael here: https://www.facebook.com/MJpop4eva/

Dr. Sami talks with Zelene and Andie about all things queer including coming out, Andie's art, their adorable love story, Andie and my high school shenanigans and much more.  You can find Andie's artwork on facebook and instagram @weirdandie and on Etsy @theweirdandie. Much of her artwork lines the walls in my home and I can honestly say that she's my favorite artist. She does commissions on shoes as well as on canvas.
