Minions and Musings

Minions and Musings

By Evil Jeff
Herein I will talk about RPG gaming with my kids, gaming online, even Play-by-Mail/Post. While I call myself a gamer, I have a love for the older games or OSR-style, if you will. I may even have a minion or two help with the discussion as well. Enjoy!

... But I rolled a natural 20!... or, musing on fumbles and critical hits.
Yeah, I know I said there will not be a podcast today but after listening to several podcasts and saying things on the discord server, my head started running with things and there's a question that I want everybody else to think about.

BX Companion Deep Dive Part 2 - Characters, Part 2
Herein continues the deep dive, this time with classes.  Let's look at the  differences between the Halfling, Magic User, and Thief, plus any material that is additional. The quest for this deep dive is simple - Will this rules set work for expanding play beyond the 14th level cap in the original B/X rules or make a mess of things?  Is it different enough from the Rules Cyclopedia that one should use it instead of the former?  Listen along with me over the next several podcasts to see what the outcome will be. The format of this deep dive was inspired by Rob C of the Down in a Heap podcast. This series of podcasts was started from a general comment and (sorta) challenge from Jason of the Nerd's RPG Variety Cast podcast. New logo artwork is from the hand of Minion Bravo! Wherein I talk about some of the issues I had in starting up the game with the minions.  Also, I've got a thought on why B/X is different from AD&D.  It was an interesting step of thoughts that got me there. Also, going to probably put the podcast on a bit of hiatus while the work schedule and demands dictates that I focus on that for the next several months.  Will still sneak out an episode here and there.

Today's podcast is a quick book review of the book "Of Dice and Men" by David Ewalt.  David is a reporter for Forbes magazine and a RPGer at his core.  Like many people, he played when younger, stopped playing for a while, then came back to the hobby and hasn't stopped (from what I can tell).  So, listen in and let me give you my impressions of this book.

Dwarves and Elves are not heroes.... or, what I read in the Hobbit that makes me think.
Reading the Hobbit to the Minions, I came across a passage that has me feeling that many people playing RPGs are making the demi-humans more heroic than they were intended.  Should a GM be a bit more strict in how these dwarves, elves, gnomes, halflings, and other demi-humans are played?  There it is.  Discuss. Also, Jason calls in and I try to respond.  Not sure how well that part went, you be the judge. Music: "Monster" by Skillet

A few weeks ago, Frothsof put up a Top 3 B&W illustrations from 1E and asked for others to do likewise. Here's my top 3 plus top 3 for the Moldvay/Cook B/X rules. Let's hear some other Anchorites do the same. Song: "Simplify" by Wes King

MINION INTERVIEW TIME!!
Herein I take an opportunity to interview one of my minions, minion #2.  I ask about her role-playing experiences, what she has encountered being a girl gamer, and just hang for a bit.  If you have any questions you would like for her to answer, call in, I might be able to convince her to answer them. You've got Dungeon in my Logic...
Finally get around to record some thoughts from a previous episode about placing monsters in a dungeon setting with some logic to how they may eat, sleep, move about and such.  These thoughts have been clogging up my head and really preventing me from moving onto some newer ideas.  Glad that's done now.
