Today I continue my conversation with my really inspiring guest Christopher Engman talking about a brilliant way to store energy using old mines! 

Engman is founder and chairman of the Swedish startup Mine Storage.   

In part 1 we talked about how the Mine Storage technology works so check it out by following the link below if you that if you haven´t already!   

Mine Storage is getting more and more attention and has come a far way and is now cooperating with utilities and grid providers to make use of old mines and turning them into large energy storage facilities using pump storage hydro.  This is a technolgy that is proven and that can be very useful to help store energy from wind and solar and provide it to the grid when needed!

I´m back after a longer break finalizing the construction drawings and plans for my really cool energy house that I hope to built in 2023!   But now I´m back with something that really excites me and that I hope can inspire others, a fully loaded episode about electric container ships!   Imagine large container ships leaving for example Oslo in Norway heading for Rotterdam with 1000 containers onboard but where 15 of the containers are fully packed with Lithum Iron Phosphate (LFP batteries) to run the whole ship with about 100 MWH of energy to take the ship more than 500 nautical miles before charging!   

Well dream no more! Join me for this years Christmas/Special Holiday episode -where I´m joined by the Norwegian company ZEN OCEANS´s CEO and founder Fridtjof Camillo Eitzen!   Fridtjof is a fifth generation oceanic shipper with about 140 years of oceanic shipping experience in his family´s cargo! He shares not only how it can be done but how Zen Oceans are working to make it a reality with today´s battery technology and clever logistics planning and why he is convinced that it can be economically viable and in parity or well, even better than diesel/conventional container ships are today!  

Now an idea I have is this: Imagine combining this with Einride´s autonomous heavy electric trucks/Pods without a cabin! Einride´s pods could be delivering fully loaded containers with Christmas presents (or even better: food items!) to large container terminals at harbour hubs such as Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where they can be loaded onto fully electric container ships such as the one´s Zen Oceans are developing (and yes in the future fully autonomous too!).  

I mean, how cool and indeed game changing wouldn´t that be!? That is the future we should aim for!

With a security and humaniatarian crisis in Ukraine my thoughts are with the Ukrainian people! 

The crisis has also revealed Europe´s unsustainable dependance on fossil fuels, especially oil and natural gas.  

BUT there is still hope!!  Today more than 50 % of the energy use (globally and in Europe) comes from heating our buildings and industries but most of it is wasted heat and comes from burning fossil fuels. Yet there is a solar technology ready today to harvest the heat from the sun much more efficiently, with much less energy lost and no emissions!   In today´s episode on the Evolution Show I talk with Joakim Byström, the CEO and founder of Absolicon,  a world leader in solar collectors with an efficiency of 74 %!    

We talk about what makes these collectors so useful and how these solar collectors already are combined with energy storage in Denmark where the excess heat from hot summer is stored in huge water containers in the ground, storing enough heat to meet the demand for large communities even cities a whole winter!  We also talk about how Absolicon´s solar collectors are being used at the world´s largest desalination plant in Saudi Arabia and at several other industrial facilities. Christmas Special: Solar Dude Ron Swenson, Entrepreneur, Inventor & Guiness World Record holder!   

Ron or "the solar dude” I like to call him, is a true pioneer in solar tech from Silicon Valley in California going back all the way to the 1980s, as an inventor in energy tech and the Guiness record holder ”for the largest kite ever used to pull a vehicle of any kind” as well as the founder and leader behind a number of sustainable transport solutions including a solar race car and electric mass transit solutions with Podcars!

Show us the charging infrastructure?   

We look at why Tesla is so successful, especially what has happened in 2019 and what´s coming up and what other manufactures can learn from this going forward.

In this episode we have two very dedicated people from the medical profession in the studio. The medical doctor and researcher Staffan Mårild and Medical Doctor student Ellinor Berg. Both are active members of the Swedish organization "Doctors for the environment" or Läkare för Miljön in Sweden, an organization founded in 1991 working to spread awareness about environmental and health related issues, and more importantly how they are interlinked!   

We talk about how deteriorating health and the escalating climate crisis are closely related and why we need to adress them together and understand the big picture to find sustainable solutions.  The focus is a comprehensive report by the Lancet Commission that was published in the Scientific Journal The Lancet in  January and an article Staffan Mårild and Ellinor Berg wrote in Sweden´s biggest newspaper Dagens Nyheter in May. covering the main points in the report and drawing out ideas to move forward. 

In part 2 of my conversation with Staffan Mårild and Ellinor Berg here on the Evolution Show, we will cover the carbon emissions from the health sector and what I call the fossil health dilemma, the oil dependance in this huge and growing sector and ideas on how we can make a fossil free transition to the future while still maintaining high health levels and public health service.

In fierce competition Heart Aerspace convinced Y-combinator investors and others that startup have the competence and the innovative power to have a commercial electric air plane ready in 2025, even Swedish Aviation companies have declared that they are ready to take orders when the planes are ready. 

I was inspired and regained some hope that we can take the first real steps to transform the aviation industry away from fossil fuels and as usual it is the outsiders that make it happen!
