Crack the RPE Code

Full Episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Hj8DcLEc9g The video description discusses the concept of perceived exertion and intuitive training in cycling. The speaker encourages athletes to focus on the perceived effort of their workouts rather than solely relying on data metrics like power output. They emphasize the importance of understanding one's own capabilities and limitations during training, allowing for a more intuitive approach to performance. The speaker illustrates this with the example of a four by five maximum effort workout, where athletes must gauge their effort level based on intuition rather than strictly adhering to prescribed metrics. They argue that this approach not only improves physical fitness but also enhances self-awareness and decision-making during races. Ultimately, the goal is to develop a deeper understanding of one's abilities and become a more efficient cyclist. Lose Weight, Maintain Power! Cycling Tips

Lose Weight, Maintain Power! Cycling Tips

Full Episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JGzN9XI3OM Managing weight loss without sacrificing power entails a strategic approach centered on carbohydrate periodization and prioritizing protein intake to preserve muscle mass. By ensuring individuals meet their protein requirements, the risk of losing power and experiencing negative side effects such as poor sleep and reduced energy levels is minimized during a calorie deficit. Tailoring carbohydrate intake based on training intensity, with higher levels on training days and moderate to low levels on rest days, optimizes energy utilization. Additionally, incorporating fats from beneficial sources aids in recovery while being mindful of energy density to prevent overconsumption. Emphasizing individual enjoyment and occasional indulgences fosters a sustainable approach to nutrition, promoting adherence to the plan while allowing flexibility for social occasions. Ultimately, aligning nutrition with training goals and personal priorities facilitates effective weight management without compromising performance or well-being. Eliminate Muscle Cramps for Endurance Athletes!

Full Episode: https://youtu.be/-JGzN9XI3OM The conversation covers various strategies to prevent muscle cramps and optimize hydration for athletes. It suggests using sodium chloride (table salt) for hydration and adding carbohydrates to retain more water before an event. Pickle juice is mentioned as a temporary solution for cramps by blocking neural pathways, but it doesn't address the root cause. Strength and conditioning exercises are recommended to prevent muscle fatigue during races. Carb loading is discussed as a way to retain water for hydration purposes. The importance of electrolytes like potassium, magnesium, and calcium in muscle function is highlighted, with sea salt and pink Himalayan salt suggested as alternatives for hydration. The conversation concludes with plans for future podcasts on topics like supplements and race strategies. Cycling Group Ride Training Tips

Cycling Group Ride Training Tips

We just did 16H of group riding and here are some tips! We are by no means saying we are perfect or telling you how to ride - just some thoughts that MIGHT help. Maybe not. Take it as two cyclists chatting. Good luck with the training! Summary notes beneath the chapters. 00:00 Group Ride Safety 03:11 Snot Rocket Etiquette 04:10 Stoplight Protocol 06:03 Clear and Concise Commands 07:31 No Headphones 08:45 Avoid Over-exaggeration 09:12 Trust and Responsibility 10:34 Deliberate Pointing and Looking 11:00 Smaller Group Size 11:59 Avoid Confrontations Summary In this conversation, Brendan Housler and Will Harden discuss group ride etiquette and safety tips. They cover topics such as being deliberate with movements, snot rocket etiquette, stoplight protocol, clear and concise commands, avoiding headphones, avoiding over-exaggeration, trust and responsibility, deliberate pointing and looking, smaller group size, and avoiding confrontations. Takeaways Be deliberate with your movements during group rides to ensure safety and avoid accidents. Follow proper snot rocket etiquette to avoid hitting other riders. When approaching a stoplight, consider holding your place behind the cars instead of pushing up and causing them to pass you again. Use clear and concise commands during group rides, and avoid using headphones. Avoid over-exaggerating hand motions and yelling during group rides. Take responsibility for the safety of the group and trust your fellow riders. Be deliberate when pointing out obstacles and always be aware of the line of the rider next to you. Smaller group sizes are preferable for a more controlled and predictable ride. Avoid confrontations with drivers and represent cyclists in a positive manner. MiniPod: Overcoming Overthinking - Rumination - Future Tripping

MiniPod: Overcoming Overthinking - Rumination - Future Tripping

From Harvard Business Review:

Overcoming Overthinking

Overthinking can take three forms: rumination, overanalyzing, and future tripping. Here’s how to spot and handle each one—before they cause you to spiral, stress, and ultimately burn out.

Rumination. This is a mental loop where you dwell on past events, particularly negative or distressing ones. If you tend to fixate on negative feedback, bring up past failures in conversation with others, or you’re overly cautious about work, you might be a ruminator. To diffuse your rumination, set aside 15 to 30 minutes to grapple with these negative thoughts. This will help you compartmentalize and stop yourself from ruminating constantly throughout the day.

Overanalyzing. Procrastinating, over-relying on others’ approval, and experiencing difficulty prioritizing are all tendencies of overanalyzers. To break the cycle, shift your aim from “perfect” to “good enough.”

Future tripping. If you spend excessive energy planning for every possible scenario, or you find it hard to celebrate your successes because you’re always thinking about what’s next, you’re likely a future tripper. To address it, use your forward-looking tendencies to your advantage by projecting yourself into a future where the stress of this moment is behind you.

P/1/2: Race Strategy Solo vs On A Team

Will and I were talking about Swamp Classic as we finished up a 30H week at EVOQ Athlete Camp (woof), and we decided to unwrap some thoughts on what it was like racing solo, versus on a team. Summary: In this conversation, Brendan and Will discuss various topics related to bike racing. They cover strategy and team dynamics, race tactics and decision making, the importance of teammates, organizing a team of all-rounders, communication and check-ins, leading out and sprinting, team dynamics and individual results, knowing yourself and your strengths, the benefits of racing with a team, preparation for time trials, nutrition and hydration for time trials, race experience and performance, and training tips. Innokenty Zavyalov: Top Gravel Racer. Training + Racing

Innokenty Zavyalov: Top Gravel Racer. Training + Racing

Innokenty, aka Inno, aka Premium Russian on IG, is one of the country's best gravel racers. Having been selected for the Lifetime Grand Prix, as well as some awesome results throughout the year, it's hard to dispute this.

Inno sits down for an extremely candid conversation about his process, success, and failures along the way.

Some of you that have been listening to the podcast know that I have a routine format that I like to follow; it's the cycling version of Tribe of Mentors by Tim Ferriss....similar questions to lots of different athletes....well, we are changing things up for 2024. Landry asked me if I was going to "make the podcast more interesting", LOL. When I asked him what he meant, he disliked the usual routine questions. While those genuinely interest me, Tom said a bit more eloquently: "Sometimes you start to go down a rabbit hole with an athlete, and these are really interesting points, but then revert back to your questions, because you might be feeling THAT is what the listener wants. Don't do that! Just roll. Just talk."

So, in 2024, the routine Q's are mostly out. They will surely bubble up a bit as we talk training, but I need to evolve. So here goes! This was the first podcast where it felt much more natural. While some of you liked the run down of routine questions, let's shake things up a bit. We will find even more amazing gems this way.

For full transparency, the questions also gave me a crutch. I'm humbled that athletes like Inno will take the time to come on the little EVOQ podcast. We've had some AMAZING guests! If I can't get them talking, the questions helped me, but that's not be developing my interview/conversational skills, and I need to up my game. Thanks for the motivation to do so LB and Tom!

Hope it resonates with you. Thanks for being a part of this community. We're starting to get our footing. We need it, I hear the moon is a rocky place. Let's gooooooo.

8 Weeks Before First Criterium, Training Plan

8 Weeks Before First Criterium, Training Plan

Before we get into the really high intensity ANAEROBIC work that we often hear is the "tune up" before crit season, let's ensure we have the right AEROBIC training set. Even for a short criterium, a strong aerobic system will allow you to smash the BIGGEST WATTS, since the glycolytic metabolism produces lactate, and the aerobic metabolism consumes lactate. Simple as that! If you don't want to create all the workouts, you can find the TP plan here for only $32! https://www.trainingpeaks.com/training-plans/cycling/road-cycling/tp-439592/8-week-criterium-anaerobic-power-tune-up Good luck! 130% FTP Is NOT Hard Enough! Anaerobic FRC Training Tips #683

130% FTP Is NOT Hard Enough! Anaerobic FRC Training Tips #683

I am also shocked that I'm going to talk about how necessary I've realized it is for me to split the classic "Zone 6: Anaerobic" into at least two buckets like WKO does, which basically shakes out to 120-150% FTP, and 150-235ish% (not as concerned with the upper limit and more on that in the video).I realized all of this after getting some early season shalacking and needed to get tee'd up for the VERY hard Capital Region Road Race (New York State Pro/1 State Championship). When using 6 zones for training, it's like "wow, 19m of anaerobic time"...but when using iLevels (9 zones), I had a workout that had NO time over 140% FTP, which i find very important to note for racing purposes...there's a LOT of smashing above that in races, and while I hit some "anaerobic training" at 19 whole minutes, it still lacked those 30-90 banger efforts. I fooled myself!00:00 Welcome 02:09 Race example: Capital Region02:54 How much 150%+ training do I need?03:58 Is a “KOM Day” hard enough?04:17 See the difference in zones06:44 What we need before “A Races”anaerobic blog mentioned: https://www.evoq.bike/blog/anaerobic-capacity-cycling 👋🏽 If you're new to the channel, welcome!
