🎬🍸Happy hour!! Friends With Benefits (the movie!) (194) 🎬🍸

🎬🍸Happy hour!! Friends With Benefits (the movie!) (194) 🎬🍸

Pour a drink and get ready to talk shit about a **really** horrible rom-com! If you ever thought friends with benefits seemed impossible to pull off this movie will make you hate the idea, cringe, and think twice about even leaving the house again.

I think this movie sucks. I am joined by friends Brian and Dessi to chat about what they think as well. Do Justin Timberlake and Mila have good chemistry? Is it permissible to keep socks on during sex? Relieve yourself in front of someone you want to have sex with?

We’ve got opinions on it all.

👻Ghosting vs. Caspering 👻

👻Ghosting vs. Caspering 👻

Ghosting: the practice of ending a personal relationship with someone by suddenly and without explanation withdrawing from all communication.

Caspering: Named after the fictional child phantom, it’s a friendly alternative to ghosting. Instead of ignoring someone, you’re honest about how you feel, and let them down gently before disappearing from their lives.

This week I am joined by wise and beautiful co-host Julie Demsey to talk about various ways of communicating in the early days of dating someone. Will have chemistry with some people and not with others, and that is fine. But there are ways of letting the other person know that are fine and others not so fine. Welcome to the stage ghosting and Caspering!

Beat your breakup in THREE hours or less. Click here to get started.

Today Julie and I cover:

-What ghosting is and is NOT

-How ghosting impacts the people on the receiving end

-Tips for coping with “being ghosted”

-How Caspering is an alternative to ghosting

-Ways to Casper

-Responding to Caspering

Enjoy - and be a part of a trend to communicate better with each other.

OUCH words hurt, don’t they? What to do? You can get over whatever bullshit your ex said to you during your relationship or breakup. You can put the past in the past. I go you.

In this week’s episode, I dive into:

-WHY people say hurtful things during a breakup

-Why you may be holding onto the past

-MY recent lessons about breakups and hurtful words

-Coping with hurtful words in the early days after a breakup

-Healing

-How to put the past in the past

Episodes mentioned in this episode:

117: Self-forgiveness and breakups

163: MY recent breakup lessons

167: Talking about your breakup

172: A letter to your ex

Quotes from this episode:

“Don’t get hung up on letting your ex know the impact of their words or actions. It is done with. It is not important to have the last word.”

“Blaming yourself keeps you trapped. Learn to forgive yourself. Commit to moving on. Commit to learning from this experience rather than torturing yourself over it.”

“Rumination causes us to identify with our thoughts. When we ruminate over painful words we start to think that they are true.”

“Our thoughts are not our reality. They are just thoughts.”

“Do you love yourself enough to set yourself free by releasing this person?”

“Repeating words outloud causes us to identify with them more and more and more. The words that were spoken to you were negative and hurtful. Repeating them spreads that negativity. It gives fuel to them. It keeps them in your system rather than allowing them to start to leave your system.”

182: 🎄Holidays after a breakup 🎄

182: 🎄Holidays after a breakup 🎄

Yikes! The first holidays after a breakup - memories, triggers, hope, not-so-much-hope, and everything in between.

Let me be your breakup buddy! Get direct access to my calendar here to schedule a FREE consultation.

It is also an opportunity to really make your breakup and your no-contact commitment STICK.

This episode is about how to do it. I’ve got four tips to help you survive this tricky time. In this episode I talk about:

-What to do about friends and family

-What to do if your ex’s family reaches out to you

-Gifts you meant to give to your ex

-Dealing with memories of your ex

-Avoiding pesky questions from family about your ex

-AND MORE!

Quotes from this episode:

“Allow yourself the gift of not thinking too much about your ex. The holidays only come once a year. Let yourself enjoy it even if your heart is still healing.”

“ Imagine how great it will feel to look back on this holiday season and remember not your ex but all of the things from this year that had nothing to do with them.”

“When you put yourself first everything else falls into place.”

“When we are trying to go no contact or really put our ex behind us it is about creating as much space with the person as we can. Talking with their parents is not creating more space, it is closing the gap.”

“Don’t let your ex invade your phone by texting with them. Don’t let it be used as a source of temptation. Let the holidays be a time when you really make no-contact stick by not having one sliver of contact with this person.”

🛑 Domestic Violence Awareness w/ Ruth Glenn, NCADV (bonus) 🛑

🛑 Domestic Violence Awareness w/ Ruth Glenn, NCADV (bonus) 🛑

Trigger warning: gun violence, stalking, partner violence, suicide

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. To begin to close things out I am sharing a conversation I had in 2021 with Ruth Glenn, President of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Ruth's story is one of survival, inspiration, and information for us all to use and share.

Let me be your breakup buddy! Get direct access to my calendar here to schedule a FREE consultation.

Domestic violence is a prevalent and misunderstood issue impacting individuals and families in every community in this country. It is estimated that nearly 20 people per minute are being physically abused in the United States, with life-altering non-physical violence just as common but less recognized.

Yet as pervasive an issue as it is, there are myths and misunderstandings that make things even less safe for victims and survivors. In this re-drop Ruth and I share:

-Her story of being abused by her husband

-Why “why didn’t you leave??” misses the point and puts the blame on the abused person

-How you can provide hope and support to someone in your life who may be being abused

-How to recognize abuse in your relationship

-How to be an advocate for victims and survivors

Plus: how to get involved with the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and join the movement against intimate partner violence.

The NCADV is 100% reliant on grassroots support and donations, not funded by government grants. Please visit them today at https://ncadv.org/ to learn about the various ways to get involved.

Did you know that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month? Today, I am going to tell a portion of my story about being in a physically and mentally violent relationship and what I learned from coming out on the other side.
I discuss:

The signs of toxic people and abusive relationships

My story in a nutshell

8 lessons I learned as part of my recovery

Quotes from today’s episode:
“All stories are as unique as the people who tell them.”
“Your relationship may be toxic if it’s characterized by behaviors that make you feel unhappy, including disrespect, dishonesty, controlling behaviors, or a lack of support.” -Healthline
“I had very, very limited experience with what a healthy relationship looked like. In many ways, I didn’t know any better. I give myself grace for that.”
“Love bombing is an emotional manipulation method that often points to the beginning of an unhealthy, toxic, or abusive relationship. Someone who uses this tactic usually does so to quickly gain the favor of a potential partner so they can more quickly and easily control them. Those who love bomb their potential partners often display narcissistic traits.” -WebMD
“The deeper you get, the harder it iw to think objectively.”
“It is a huge, HUGE red flag when someone pressures you to move in early in the relationship. This demand on the level of commitment so early is not only a red flag but a deal breaker.”
“Abusers are sly, sleek, calculated people who ease their way into your life in ways that seem normal and sweet at first.”
"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time." Maya Angelo

176: 🚘What does it mean to move on? 🚘

176: 🚘What does it mean to move on? 🚘

Let me be your breakup buddy! Get direct access to my calendar here to schedule a FREE consultation.

How will I know I have moved on? How will I know I am ready to date again? These are questions I hear all of the time. “Moving on” is a fairly abstract concept, so today I am giving you som measurable benchmarks to monitor your progress.

I share:

-Why it is important to know what “moving on” looks like

-How not fully moving on from a breakup prevents us from enjoying the moment

-My stages of breakup grief

-The importance of acceptance

-What your day will look like once you move on from your breakup

-How to know if you’re ready to date again

-Will you still think about your ex after you’ve moved on?

Quotes:

“When you stop dwelling on regret and instead become grateful for the lessons you have reached an important benchmark on the moving on journey.”

“You deserve to enjoy the moment and to let joy grow in your life. When you feel easily triggered by memories of your ex it is very hard to do this.”

“In my book, the no contact rule includes any space that your ex has in your phone, including pictures, texts, and yes, social media.”

“There is a period of time after a breakup that you will likely find it hard to see into the future. This is okay.”

“Dating from a place of having “moved on” alsbolutely means not going on dates or chatting with people and comparing them to your ex. Nothing good can come of this and it means you have a strong attachment to the good days of your last relationship still.”

“We all heal at our own pace.”

I know you can do it :)

Ah triggers…they come up when we least expect them to, and we often react so quickly that it can cause ruptures in our relationships. Preventing these ruptures is an intentional, ongoing practice.
Inside of a healthy, committed relationship both people can play a part in working through it. But it is our personal responsibility to make that happen.
Welcome back to the show Brian Dunn! This week we are talking about:
-The definition of a “trigger”
-What happens when we feel triggered
-How our past relationships affect what we respond to
-What can happen in a relationship when triggers go un-addressed
-The part that each person in a relationship plays in addressing and preventing future rifts that are caused due to past shit
Please go show Brian some podcast love. Follow him on IG at mrbriancdunn and TicTok at mrbriancdunn
Quotes from the episode:
“Get specific. Saying you ‘felt triggered’ does not describe your experience.”
“If someone has “triggers” and is not working to resolved them, you do have the option to consider if it is something you want to take on.”
“Both perspectives can be true.”
“It is not about who’s right and who’s wrong. It’s about ‘We have this problem. How can we fix it together?’”

Today’s chat is a true inspiration. I am speaking with former client Emma about her journey to leave a toxic cycle she had with a man and to truly come to love herself and use her breakup as a catalyst to create a new beginning in life. This is my goal with all of my clients, to take shit and spin into into gold.

I want you to pay attention to:

-Emma’s realization that the pattern she was in with her ex was predictable and far from romantic

-How little emotion she now feels about the person she once sacrificed so much for

-How thankful she is for the lessons she learned from her breakup

-How SEXY her life is now
