Episode #182-Jesse Funk-Triathlete-Podcaster-Founder of Solpri
In 2016 Jesse was chest deep into training to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional triathlete. There’s people who say they want something. Then there are those who actually do something about it. He always wanted to be the latter. While enjoying endless hours of training including 6-7 hours of swimming a week, he developed a rash on his skin from the pool. It was then he realized that while he was training to be in the best physical shape he could be in that chemicals like chlorine in our environment are still having a negative impact on us. So being someone who wants to actually do something about a problem he set out to create a natural product to deal with chlorine, thus Solpri’s Swim line was born. In 2017 he introduced the now best-selling all-natural fungus fighting bar soap, Shield Soap, thus the shield line was born. After a crash during Ironman 70.3 Eagleman in 2018 left his collarbone shattered and requiring surgery; his dream to become a professional triathlete was set aside. But where one door closes another opens. Thus he began doubling my efforts to share the love of natural healthy products that active people can use to take care of themselves in a toxic world. Today he continues to run Solpri, sharing the stories of other awesome athletes on The Smart Athlete Podcast and looking for new ways to help  live your life to its happiest healthiest potential. https://solpri.com/

Episode #173- Troy Howard-Managing Director-Aspen Skiing Company-Ultrarunner
Troy Howard- https://www.linkedin.com/in/troy-howard-a0b4b94/  I completed my first 100 mile trail run around 2007 at Angeles Crest in Southern California.  I came in second and had such a positive experience. In 2009 I ran my first Hardrock 100 in Southern Colorado’s San Juan mountains.  It was unlike anything I thought was possible.  I came in second in the second fastest time on record. That Hardrock experience led my wife and I to decide to leave California and make the move to Colorado where we still live today. I worked for Vail Resorts for 9 years where I led their HR & Finance systems.  I also received the CIO 100 award for implementing real-time lift line wait times across all of the destination resorts. A year ago I left Vail Resorts for the opportunity to live more directly in the mountains and for a company more aligned with my values.  I now work for Aspen Skiing Company where help run all of Aspen’s systems. Sidenote: I have a heart condition known as a “bicuspid aortic valve” where one chamber of my heart is ~50% less efficient.  I’ve been told that if it was 100% I’d see a material improvement in my athletic performance.  Not sure I buy that.  I think it hinders my anaerobic performance, but has no real impact for ultra distances where it’s as much mental as it is physical. Athletic highlights: 11 100 mile run finishes 6 Leadville 100 mountain bike finishes 5 Elk Mountain Grand Traverse ski mountaineering finishes Countless other marathons, ultra marathons less than 100 miles, ski mountaineering races, ultra endurance biking events & races Continue to play hockey recreationally, ski at least 40 days a season, backpacking

Mike is a med device veteran who brings more than 30 years of sales and marketing experience in the medical device industry, currently serves as President and CEO Vomaris Innovations. Outside of work, mike found a passion for endurance athletics. He completed seven Ironman Triathlons, twelve marathons, and a first ultra 50-mile. He finds that training for endurance sports is similar to business – you start with the end in mind. But perhaps the most critical elements are the incremental steps you must take on a daily basis to get to that end goal. In a sense, you get used to being “comfortable being uncomfortable”, which builds your resilience. I find this helps me in business to not be overwhelmed with the sometimes perceived enormity of various tasks. I know I just need to get things done, one step at a time. https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelpnagel/

Here at Grüvi, we strive to create an inclusive community focused on making better choices within our daily lives. We truly believe in a world where we don’t always feel inclined to drink in a social setting, and a world where everyone can feel comfortable, regardless of what’s in their cup. Our mission is simple- help others be healthy and stay social, one drink at a time. We sought to create a line of craft, non-alcoholic beers and wine because you deserve it. Your health is your wealth, and the beverage you consume shouldn’t compromise that. While alcohol remains so pervasive in our society, we’ve challenged ourselves to create a brand that breaks this cycle. Grüvi was created to dispel the common notion that non-alcoholic beer tastes, well, not great. We saw a desperate need for innovation in the space, and we are here to prove that you can have it all. Episode #138-Jeremy Bhandari- Author of Trust The Grind
Jeremy Bhandari was born in Ashland, Massachusetts on June 19, 1996. Unlike the plurality of babies born in the 20th century, Jeremy wriggled into the world in his mother's bedroom, rather than a hospital. His rare arrival on Earth is ironically symbolic with his life story. Before dropping him off to preschool, Jeremy's mother would spread out the sports section in the Boston Globe for her son to examine while he ate his breakfast. Jeremy, at just 4-years-old, would study the MLB standings and league leaders. At this point, circa 2001, all the Massachusetts baseball fanatics obsessed over Pedro Martinez and Nomar Garciaparra, two stars on the Boston Red Sox. When it was time for Jeremy to select his favorite player for the back of his Tee Ball card, the calculated cherub demanded that Alex Rodriguez, a shortstop for the Texas Rangers, be labeled on his individualized square. While Jeremy probably couldn't locate Texas on a map, he knew that Rodriguez was leading the American League in home runs, so why not classify him as his front-runner? Jeremy's love for sports continued to maturate as he grew older. In elementary school, he started writing fictionalized stories of baseball games, where one team would always make an epic comeback in the late-innings. Fast forward to his junior year at UMass Amherst, and Jeremy was still scripting about sports. After handing in a paper on the relationship between spending and winning in the MLB, Jeremy decided to take writing more seriously. At 23-years-old, Jeremy signed a contract with Mango Publishing and wrote Trust The Grind, which reached #1 on Amazon’s Teen/YA Fitness & Exercise bestseller list, and was most notably endorsed by NBA legend, Jason Kidd. In addition, Trust The Grind was added to the list of Summer Reading options for the students at Ashland High School (Ashland, MA).  Aside from writing, Jeremy puts a strong emphasis on physical fitness, and spreading love to all those around him. https://www.amazon.com/Trust-Grind-How-World-Class-Athletes/dp/1642502448 https://twitter.com/jeremythegrind https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremybhandari/

Episode #92-Mark Allen/Scott Zagarino- 1989 The Story
Mark Allen is a legend and Icon in the triathlon and endurance world. Here is a little about him After competing and losing in the Ironman Triathlon Championships six times (often to Dave Scott), Allen emerged victorious in 1989, winning one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. This was the first of six Ironman victories for Allen, the last coming in 1995 at age 37, making him the oldest winner of the event at that time. My favorite intro from his bio “I began a career as a professional triathlete in 1982. Back then doing a triathlon was a big adventure. There were no books, no videos, no coaches. But there were races, some even had prize money. The challenge was how to go faster. One month we might think the key was mileage, so we’d crank out ridiculous totals week after week. Swim 30,000 yards in seven days? Of course! Pile on 500 miles cycling and another 70 running in that same time? Why not! Was that enough? Was it too much? It was all a guess. Our second guest is Scott Zagarino Scott has been involved in triathlon in one capacity or another for more than 35 years. And Over the course of 15 years he competed in 53 triathlons around the world. For a few seasons he tried his hand at racing as a pro. Racing in this company was a master class in humility. When injuries forced him out of triathlon he moved on to adventure racing, whitewater kayaking, surfski paddling and kitesurfing. Between 2000 and 2006 he trained in the traditional Soto School of Zen Buddhism beginning as a novice monk and upon completing that portion of my training, was ordained legally as a Zen Buddhist Priest. Professionally he runs the Scott Zagarino Agency where he works and collaborates in event communication, athlete communication and sponsorhips service Mark and Scott have created the 1989 story. Which can be found at 1989thestory.com Here is a quick overview of this project On October 14, 1989 at the Ironman® Triathlon World Championship the universe of sport was changed forever when Dave Scott and Mark Allen ran “The Greatest Race Ever Run” pushing each other to the breaking point, and then pushing harder for more than eight hours, never separated by more than a few feet. Both athletes raced wondering how much longer they could go on at that level of suffering? The challenge to leaving a lasting legacy in sports is that the story has to originate with the truth, and the truth about the 1989 race has never been told in its entirety. The stories that have been published, or handed down as anecdotes from sound bites taken from interviews with Mark Allen and Dave Scott that only reveal parts of the picture, but none have captured their full personal stories until now. Episode #90-Andy Blow-Founder of Precision Hydration
He is his bio from his Site- https://www.precisionhydration.com/pages/about-us  I slightly younger days I was an elite level triathlete and have a few top-10 Ironman and 70.3 finishes to my name. I also won an Xterra World Age Group title back in the year 2000. Knee surgery forced me out of competitive triathlon a few years ago, but I still compete for fun at events like Coast to Coast New Zealand and OtillO. I mainly get away with this because my incredibly supportive wife Lucy (and 2 kids) agree to pretend that these trips are in fact family holidays. I’ve got a degree in Sport and Exercise Science and was once the Team Sports Scientist for Benetton and Renault F1 teams. I learnt about hydration and electrolyte replenishment the hard way, by getting things very wrong and ending up in the medical tent of more than one hot endurance event. It took a lot of frustrating trial and error to get to the bottom of my hydration problems. But it was worth it, as Precision Hydration was essentially born out of this struggle.
