In the 123rd episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert open the episode with some discussion on upcoming video game adaptations BORDERLANDS, which had been toiling in production hell, and touch on other game adaptations FALLOUT and HALO. We kick off with MADAME WEB (5:47) and Jason and Robert’s diverging opinions before moving on to DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS (25:04) from Ethan Coen. The episode finishes with Jason and Robert’s top 10s of 2023 (that they’ve seen so far) (33:52).

In the 122nd episode of The Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert gush over GODZILLA MINUS ONE (6:28), a movie that delivered on an exciting trailer with a new chubby Godzilla; find reasons to enjoy the final chapter of the old DCEU with AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM (20:24); the complete and utter mess that was REBEL MOON (32:50); and discuss why POOR THINGS (58:22) is a potential awards darling.

In the 121st episode of The Extra Buttery Episode, Jason and Robert discuss the new MAD MAX: FURIOSA trailer in the cold open before heading to Osage County with Martin Scorsese's KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (7:57). In a jam-packed episode, Jason thinks Ridley Scott's lost the plot with NAPOLEON (25:11) and THE MARVELS (42:13) is flat-out not good while Robert believes Alexander Payne is back in form with THE HOLDOVERS (33:24) and finds some amusement with David Fincher's THE KILLER (55:03).

Episode 120 - “I have a problem and I’m trying to fix it.” [The Creator, Ahsoka, Dumb Money]

In the 120th episode of The Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert rattle off movies they’re looking forward to over the winter months and into the holiday season before taking a deep dive into THE CREATOR (10:44), discussing the incredible production value despite a modest budget, the battle between humans vs. AI, Asian representation, and the Vietnam War imagery. We continue with more sci-fi with AHSOKA (32:32) and why it falters because it tries to be both a show for adults and kids. Then we finish with DUMB MONEY (57:38) and the impact of the meme stock craze.

Episode 119 - "It hit every single note." [Oppenheimer, Barbie, M:I 7, Indy 5]

In the 119th episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Robert quizzes Jason with a lightning round of “real movie or not?” (And, sorry, the Mattel toy is Mighty Max, not Mad Max). We start with the instant classic OPPENHEIMER (9:31) and move on to BARBIE (37:07), and discuss how Barbenheimer has hurt MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE (49:10) and its many faults. We finish with INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (1:07:40) and ASTEROID CITY (1:23:22).

Episode 118 - “I don’t care anymore. Nobody stays dead.” [Succession S4, Blackberry, Fast X, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse]

In the 118th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert’s attempt at the cold open begins with the writers’ strike and somehow ends up reminiscing about their youth. Anyway, they open with SUCCESSION (4:05) and why Tom Wambsgams was tabbed to win from the very beginning, and kick off the movies segment with BLACKBERRY (16:38), a Canadian hit about a Canadian has-been. It’s a lot better than FAST X (26:54), which has forced Jason to abandon his fandom for the “family.” Fortunately, things look up with SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE (43:19) and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 (50:51).

Episode 117 - "This might be his worst acting performance. Ever." [Creed III, John Wick 4, Super Mario Bros., The Mandalorian S3, Succession S4]

In the 117th episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert open with a discussion about the upcoming writers’ strike and the impact of AI-produced scripts, but harken to The Architect’s warning about how computer errors are inevitably made by humans. We start the episode with CREED III (5:02), Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut and possibly Jonathan Majors’ last big feature role, and segue to Keanu Reeves’ (final?) appearance in the action-packed (and unintentionally hilarious?) JOHN WICK 4 (14:07). Our jam-packed episode continues with DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES (27:20), THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE (36:36), THE MANDALORIAN (44:20), get sidetracked with Star Wars talk, then finish with HBO’S SUCCESSION (53:00).

Episode 116 - “It’s almost funnier when it goes wrong. They should embrace it” [ANT-MAN: QUANTUMANIA, THE LAST OF US, TOP 10 OF 2022]

In the 116th episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert open with their thoughts on the laughable new crisis management team for this year’s Oscars before launching into our thoughts on the lukewarm ANT-MAN: QUANTUMANIA (4:42). Meanwhile, HBO’s LAST OF US (24:37) has been a big hit, an anomaly in the world of video game adaptations. The episode finishes with Jason and Robert’s top 10 of 2022 (38:24) and a bonus worst movie of the year (1:06:34).

In the 112th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Robert opens with his experience at TIFF 2022 before he and Jason dive into Amazon's THE RINGS OF POWER (3:03) and HBO'S HOUSE OF THE DRAGON (24:33), and why comparing the two fantasy epics is like apples and oranges. (Yes, Milly Alcock's character is Rhaenyra, not Rhaenys - sorry). We then U-turn back to TIFF (32:18) with THE WOMAN KING starring Viola Davis, Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins' EMPIRE OF LIGHT (33:46), the disappointing BUTCHER'S CROSSING featuring Nicolas Cage (39:06), Palme d'Or winner TRIANGLE OF SADNESS (43:56) and Rob's favourite, THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN (49:25).

In the 111th episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert open with a discussion about the recent cancellation of BATGIRL and the implication of the Warner Bros.-Discovery merger. We kick off with a belated discussion (spoilers!) on THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER (8:50) and why it didn't work, Jordan Peele's new thriller NOPE (27:48), the messy and chaotic BULLET TRAIN (37:23), and two TV show recommendations with HBO's cringe docu-comedy THE REHEARSAL (50:13) and Netflix's Korean import about an autistic lawyer in EXTRAORDINARY ATTORNEY WOO (57:15).

In the 109th episode of The Extra Buttery Podcast, Robert visits Jason in Vancouver and they go catch a flick... Unfortunately, it was FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE SECRETS OF DUMBLEDORE (7:35), the third film of a poorly conceived spin-off franchise that is (hopefully) meeting its merciful end. Robert also reviews Alex Garland's new horror-thriller film, MEN (44:55). There's a lot of discontent in this episode so make sure you listen because misery loves company.

We discuss the film's use of both real-life and fictional interviews, a rare instance where Linklater doesn't effectively convey the passage of time and why it fell under the radar despite its A-list cast.

We start off by discussing Robert's previous disappointment with Tarsem's IMMORTALS, and then move into THE CELL's crazy but time-tested visual effects and the central performances from Jennifer Lopez, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Vince Vaughn. Should Tarsem get some Netflix or Amazon money to make up for the terrible direct-to-DVD sequel?

Episode 95 - "You always get the feeling you're missing something." [The Woman in the Window, Army of the Dead]

In the 95th episode of The Extra Buttery Podcast, summer movie season is crawling back to life. We begin in the Montana wilderness with a new thriller from Taylor Sheridan, THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD, starring Angelina Jolie (2:40). Then we retreat back into the house with THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW (16:36), a long-delayed Hitchcock ripoff starring Amy Adams. Finally, we puzzle through our second Zack Snyder film of the year, ARMY OF THE DEAD (35:25), an apparent franchise-launcher of a zombie film with an ensemble cast and a few too many ideas for its own good.

Extra Buttery Bonus – Episode 4 – The Player (1992)

In the fourth episode of Jason and Robert Watch Old Movies, we take a deep dive into Robert Altman's THE PLAYER. Released in 1992 and nominated at the 65th Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing, Tim Robbins stars as a hot shot movie exec who gets embroiled in a murder-mystery with a bitter screenwriter. We talk about how we stumbled upon this film (3:00), its light skewering of Hollywood (19:40) and our final thoughts (39:01).

Episode 94 - "Unsurprisingly, his story is the worst story." [Mortal Kombat, Stowaway & more]

In the 94th episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert recap the Oscars (2:29) – Robert’s second favorite holiday of the year – before discussing Clueless Cole in MORTAL KOMBAT (19:06), the predictability of the new space thriller STOWAWAY (32:56), before finishing off with THE CAPTAIN FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER (42:54), a TV series that’s equal parts action, comedy, drama, thriller and horror, but ends up kind of getting lost in the middle of nowhere despite its stern messaging about race politics in American history.

Extra Buttery Bonus – Episode 3 – The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

Extra Buttery Bonus – Episode 3 – The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

In the third episode of Jason and Robert Watch Old Movies, we head back to the beginnings of the superhero era with the smash box office miss, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN. An ill-fated project from inception, a grumpy Sean Connery (in his last film ever) stars in a dieselpunk superhero flick directed by Stephen Norrington (also his last film), based on an adaptation of Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s graphic novel about a team of superhero fictional characters in Victorian England who are tasked with stopping The Fantom from starting a world war. We go through the film’s troubled history (4:42), the awesome production and the characters (19:14), and finish off the episode reminiscing about LXG when it was first released (44:34).

Episode 93 - Zack Snyder's Justice League [ft. Peter Henderson]

In the 93rd episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert open with a brief discussion about some casting news with Disney+’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series before taking a deep dive into ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE (3:40). After discussing our initial thoughts, we talk about pivotal inclusion of The Flash and Cyborg’s backstories and stylistic differences between Snyder and the-man-who-replaced-Snyder until we are joined by a friend of the show, Peter Henderson, where it gets all kinds of philosophical (25:37).

(Sincerest apologies on Jason’s behalf for the audio quality – we had some technical issues that we tried our best to fix in post.)

Episode 92 - "I'm surprised Sound of Metal got so much attention, but I'm so happy." [WandaVision, Oscar nominees]

In the 92nd episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert share their thoughts on the WANDAVISION finale and Scarlet Witch's grieving process (4:13) before diving into the Oscar nominations, including the inclusion of Thomas Vinterberg and SOUND OF METAL, two films we thought would get overlooked. The meat of the episode (16:16) begins with a brief chat about our biggest surprises before moving on to each of the individual categories.

Extra Buttery Bonus - Episode 2 - Gattaca (1997)

It’s our second bonus episode, part of our new series where Robert and Jason go back over older titles one of us has never seen before. This time we get into GATTACA (1997), starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. We go over Jason’s attempts to get Robert to watch (3:54), and catch everyone up on how Andrew Niccol burst on the scene with his directorial debut (5:56). We discuss how the movie may have predicted the rise of Elon Musk and SpaceX (12:18), as well as whether you can classify the movie as horror (22:35). Then we talk about Jerome (Jude Law) and his motivation (28:40), Niccol’s later projects (34:17), and then close things out with what a remake might look like. Next bonus episode: THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN (2003).

Episode 91 - "I went 5 out of 5 on Letterboxd." [Minari, Judas and the Black Messiah]

In the 91st episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert discuss Lee Isaac Chung’s MINARI (7:40), about a Korean family trying to carve out their own little space in America, and Shaka King’s JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH (35:17), about Fred Hampton and the Black Panther Party in the 1960s. How did these films tackle racism and prejudice? What do they tell us about America? Skip to the end if you want to hear how they stack up against the competition (48:33).

Extra Buttery Bonus - Episode 1 - True Lies (1994)

In the first-ever episode of Jason and Robert Watch Old Movies (title TBD), we tackle the hard truth about Ahhh-nold’s TRUE LIES: it’s a really fun action movie. A $300-million hit, it was supposed to spawn a sequel (14:53), only to get shelved after 9/11 irrevocably changed the action movie landscape. We continue with our most ridiculous moments (21:27), the best lines (26:47), what the upcoming CBS show could bring (29:54) and deliver our final thoughts (35:25). Next bonus episode: GATTACA.

Episode 90 - "No filmmaker could possibly get this angry." [Promising Young Woman, Malcolm & Marie]

In the 90th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert begin with an extended discussion on the recent SAG nominations, why no one cares about the Golden Globes (hint: they get it wrong all the time) and why the Oscars have an obsession with representing international films even though they’re often poorly understood or overlooked by the voting body of – you guessed it – predominantly white Americans. We talk about why TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 is this year’s safe pick (8:02) before launching onto PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (9:25) and MALCOLM & MARIE (18:27). Next up is TV, where we share our thoughts on LUPIN (30:54) and WANDAVISION (41:18).

Episode 89 - "You're not gonna be happy with me." [Preliminary Top 10 of 2020]

In the 89th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert discuss the first two episodes of WandaVision, which asks more questions than it answers, before jumping into our Top 10 films of the year (so far). Our lists are subject to change as we await new releases, but check our discussion starting (4:46) before running down the full list (45:10). The episode ends with some extra butter -- films that we disliked or hated or bored us out of our minds (48:54). We will discuss and publish our final Top 10 list and award picks in a couple months. Stay tuned!

Episode 88 - “None of it made any sense. It was all fluff.” [Wonder Woman 1984, Soul]

Happy New Year! In the 88th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert wrap up 2020 with the holiday releases. Unfortunately, most of it came with capital-D Disappointment and a side of unbuttered popcorn. We begin by questioning the decision to include L__ S______ in the season finale of The Mandalorian (2:08, Wookiepedia time: 11:44) before moving onto even more curious screenwriting decisions in Wonder Woman 1984 (19:18). George Clooney made another snoozer in The Midnight Sky (37:49), but Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (47:34) will certainly give you a violent jolt. We saved the best for last with Soul (55:25), and comment on how Pixar is so fantastic at visualizing abstract ideas and concepts.

Episode 87 - Theatres are NOT dead! [Mank, Sound of Metal]

We’re back! In the 87th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert open up with their expectations for Spider-Man 3 (or is it 8?) given the recent castings, which swings the discussion to Warner Bros.’ decision to release WONDER WOMAN 1984 in theatres and on streaming services at the same time (5:45). Want to skip straight to the good stuff? It’s a STAR WARS extravaganza with THE MANDALORIAN (19:55, spoiler heavy) right off the top (jet pack?) and Robert’s Wookiepedia story time (27:22). We come back to reality with David Fincher’s biopic MANK (35:01) and Darius Marder’s drama SOUND OF METAL (48:20), about a metal drummer coping with deafness. The next episode will be our wrap-up episode for 2020 so look for that just before the calendar turns! Happy Holidays!

Episode 86 - "I'm attracted to Margaret Thatcher now." [The Mandalorian, The Crown]

“YADDLE MAKES ANOTHER APPEARANCE!”

In the 86th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert discuss RONIN and 47 RONIN (loosely connected) … then, yup, it’s a tangent as Robert drones on about his custom (!) tweed jacket. The episode officially begins with a lengthy discussion about romantic crime drama QUEEN & SLIM (7:40, *spoilers* between 18:19-19:52), and Chapters 10 and 11 of THE MANDALORIAN (21:46). Wookiepedia Robert takes over (26:30) and talks at length about Bo-Katan, the Darksaber, Ashoka Tano and Darth Maul. We stick to dysfunctional family dramas with Season 4 of THE CROWN (42:20) and how Gillian Anderson’s Margaret Thatcher is the new Mrs. Robinson.

Episode 85 - "Who's Yaddle?!" [The Mandalorian, The Queen's Gambit, Borat 2]

Is this the Heath Ledger appreciation hour? In the 85th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert open up with an extended talk about the timeless medieval comedy, A KNIGHT’S TALE (now on Netflix), and where it fits in Ledger’s legacy. After the intro and – tangent alert! – Robert proudly revealing his pumpkin spice obsession, we move onto Season 2 of THE MANDALORIAN (10:20) where we discuss the show’s surprising lack of divisiveness among Star Wars fans, an introduction to Yaddle (not Baby Yoda’s mom, we think) and why everything happens on Tatooine. There’s a short interlude for Sean Connery and his 007 legacy (28:00) before we move onto Netflix’s THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT (32:27) and its first iteration in the 2000’s with Ledger set to direct, and then it’s – veryyyy niiice!!! – BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM (43:04) and its potential implications on the U.S. election and perhaps the upcoming Oscars (according to Jason’s conspiracy theory).

Episode 84 - "You could make a Heritage Minute out of this." [The Trial of the Chicago 7, Kajillionaire]

What’s your favourite movie so far this year? In the 84th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert wonder how the delayed releases of big-time movies will affect award races. Then they move on to a wrap-up of VIFF with Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut FALLING (3:32, *minor spoilers*) and ANOTHER ROUND (10:34), a Danish film from Thomas Vinterberg about four schoolteachers who get hammered at work. We discuss our final thoughts on the slower, more methodical Season 2 of THE BOYS (17:35, *major spoilers*) and what future seasons may head in store for Stormfront, A-Train and The Deep, and also Aaron Sorkin’s new legal drama, THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 (33:25), and Miranda July’s idiosyncratic dark comedy, KAJILLIONAIRE (49:17).
