In the 120th episode of The Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert rattle off movies they’re looking forward to over the winter months and into the holiday season before taking a deep dive into THE CREATOR (10:44), discussing the incredible production value despite a modest budget, the battle between humans vs. AI, Asian representation, and the Vietnam War imagery. We continue with more sci-fi with AHSOKA (32:32) and why it falters because it tries to be both a show for adults and kids. Then we finish with DUMB MONEY (57:38) and the impact of the meme stock craze.

It’s a lot better than FAST X (26:54), which has forced Jason to abandon his fandom for the “family.” Fortunately, things look up with SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE (43:19) and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 (50:51).

In the 117th episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert open with a discussion about the upcoming writers’ strike and the impact of AI-produced scripts, but harken to The Architect’s warning about how computer errors are inevitably made by humans. In the seventh episode of Jason and Robert Watch Old Movies, we pay a visit to BERNIE (2011), Richard Linklater's quirky comedy based on a true story starring Jack Black as a well-liked assistant funeral director who murders a crabby widow in a small Texas town. We discuss the film's use of both real-life and fictional interviews, a rare instance where Linklater doesn't effectively convey the passage of time and why it fell under the radar despite its A-list cast.

In the 97th episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert open with a re-visit of CHRONICLE (2012) and its potential sequel with new female leads. With theatres opening up, it's time to get back on track and we're back to our healthy diet of new movies. We dispute the merits of THE SUICIDE SQUAD (4:10), debate the themes and ideas in Sir Gawain's journey in THE GREEN KNIGHT (31:05, spoilers at 42:33) and briefly discuss the social media-inspired ZOLA (48:38).

In the sixth episode of Jason and Robert Watch Old Movies, we revisit HIGH FIDELITY, the romantic dramedy adapted from Nick Hornby's novel that made John Cusack a pop culture icon. In true Extra Buttery fashion, we branch off on all sorts of tangents, including director Stephen Frears' other works, the movie's similarities to Kevin Smith films, Jack Black's scene-stealing performance and how Cusack's main character goes from selfish man-child to maturing adult.

In the 96th episode of The Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert open with Richard Donner’s death and how SUPERMAN made an impact on the modern superhero films. We then hop on the TemPad and enter the Marvel universe with a discussion about Disney+’s LOKI (4:15) and the mass confusion in plots that involve time travel, then stay in-house with Pixar’s LUCA (17:33) and why it lacks that Pixar magic. Skip ahead to THE TOMORROW WAR (29:41) for the meat of the episode, a sci-fi action film about how a basic white dude and his rag-tag team of unlikely heroes save Earth from a terrifying (but cool) group of alien monsters in a screenplay borrowed from, like, 10 other movies.

In their fifth bonus episode, Robert and Jason revisit a terrifying movie from Jason's childhood: Tarsem Singh's psychological thriller THE CELL. Don't ask us why Jason was watching something this creepy at 12 years old! We start off by discussing Robert's previous disappointment with Tarsem's IMMORTALS, and then move into THE CELL's crazy but time-tested visual effects and the central performances from Jennifer Lopez, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Vince Vaughn. Should Tarsem get some Netflix or Amazon money to make up for the terrible direct-to-DVD sequel?

In the 95th episode of The Extra Buttery Podcast, summer movie season is crawling back to life. We begin in the Montana wilderness with a new thriller from Taylor Sheridan, THOSE WHO WISH ME DEAD, starring Angelina Jolie (2:40). Then we retreat back into the house with THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW (16:36), a long-delayed Hitchcock ripoff starring Amy Adams. Finally, we puzzle through our second Zack Snyder film of the year, ARMY OF THE DEAD (35:25), an apparent franchise-launcher of a zombie film with an ensemble cast and a few too many ideas for its own good.

In the fourth episode of Jason and Robert Watch Old Movies, we take a deep dive into Robert Altman's THE PLAYER. Released in 1992 and nominated at the 65th Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing, Tim Robbins stars as a hot shot movie exec who gets embroiled in a murder-mystery with a bitter screenwriter. We talk about how we stumbled upon this film (3:00), its light skewering of Hollywood (19:40) and our final thoughts (39:01).

In the 94th episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert recap the Oscars (2:29) – Robert’s second favorite holiday of the year – before discussing Clueless Cole in MORTAL KOMBAT (19:06), the predictability of the new space thriller STOWAWAY (32:56), before finishing off with THE CAPTAIN FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER (42:54), a TV series that’s equal parts action, comedy, drama, thriller and horror, but ends up kind of getting lost in the middle of nowhere despite its stern messaging about race politics in American history.

In the third episode of Jason and Robert Watch Old Movies, we head back to the beginnings of the superhero era with the smash box office miss, THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN. An ill-fated project from inception, a grumpy Sean Connery (in his last film ever) stars in a dieselpunk superhero flick directed by Stephen Norrington (also his last film), based on an adaptation of Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s graphic novel about a team of superhero fictional characters in Victorian England who are tasked with stopping The Fantom from starting a world war. We go through the film’s troubled history (4:42), the awesome production and the characters (19:14), and finish off the episode reminiscing about LXG when it was first released (44:34).

In the 93rd episode of the Extra Buttery Podcast, Jason and Robert open with a brief discussion about some casting news with Disney+’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series before taking a deep dive into ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE (3:40). After discussing our initial thoughts, we talk about pivotal inclusion of The Flash and Cyborg’s backstories and stylistic differences between Snyder and the-man-who-replaced-Snyder until we are joined by a friend of the show, Peter Henderson, where it gets all kinds of philosophical (25:37).

Happy New Year! In the 88th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert wrap up 2020 with the holiday releases. Unfortunately, most of it came with capital-D Disappointment and a side of unbuttered popcorn. We begin by questioning the decision to include L__ S______ in the season finale of The Mandalorian (2:08, Wookiepedia time: 11:44) before moving onto even more curious screenwriting decisions in Wonder Woman 1984 (19:18). George Clooney made another snoozer in The Midnight Sky (37:49), but Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (47:34) will certainly give you a violent jolt. We saved the best for last with Soul (55:25), and comment on how Pixar is so fantastic at visualizing abstract ideas and concepts.

We’re back! In the 87th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert open up with their expectations for Spider-Man 3 (or is it 8?) given the recent castings, which swings the discussion to Warner Bros.’ decision to release WONDER WOMAN 1984 in theatres and on streaming services at the same time (5:45). Want to skip straight to the good stuff? It’s a STAR WARS extravaganza with THE MANDALORIAN (19:55, spoiler heavy) right off the top (jet pack?) and Robert’s Wookiepedia story time (27:22). We come back to reality with David Fincher’s biopic MANK (35:01) and Darius Marder’s drama SOUND OF METAL (48:20), about a metal drummer coping with deafness. “YADDLE MAKES ANOTHER APPEARANCE!”

In the 86th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert discuss RONIN and 47 RONIN (loosely connected) … then, yup, it’s a tangent as Robert drones on about his custom (!) tweed jacket. The episode officially begins with a lengthy discussion about romantic crime drama QUEEN & SLIM (7:40, *spoilers* between 18:19-19:52), and Chapters 10 and 11 of THE MANDALORIAN (21:46). Wookiepedia Robert takes over (26:30) and talks at length about Bo-Katan, the Darksaber, Ashoka Tano and Darth Maul. We stick to dysfunctional family dramas with Season 4 of THE CROWN (42:20) and how Gillian Anderson’s Margaret Thatcher is the new Mrs. Robinson.

Is this the Heath Ledger appreciation hour? In the 85th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert open up with an extended talk about the timeless medieval comedy, A KNIGHT’S TALE (now on Netflix), and where it fits in Ledger’s legacy. After the intro and – tangent alert! – Robert proudly revealing his pumpkin spice obsession, we move onto Season 2 of THE MANDALORIAN (10:20) where we discuss the show’s surprising lack of divisiveness among Star Wars fans, an introduction to Yaddle (not Baby Yoda’s mom, we think) and why everything happens on Tatooine. There’s a short interlude for Sean Connery and his 007 legacy (28:00) before we move onto Netflix’s THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT (32:27) and its first iteration in the 2000’s with Ledger set to direct, and then it’s – veryyyy niiice!!! – BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM (43:04) and its potential implications on the U.S. election and perhaps the upcoming Oscars (according to Jason’s conspiracy theory).

What’s your favourite movie so far this year? In the 84th episode of the Extra Buttery podcast, Jason and Robert wonder how the delayed releases of big-time movies will affect award races. Then they move on to a wrap-up of VIFF with Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut FALLING (3:32, *minor spoilers*) and ANOTHER ROUND (10:34), a Danish film from Thomas Vinterberg about four schoolteachers who get hammered at work. We discuss our final thoughts on the slower, more methodical Season 2 of THE BOYS (17:35, *major spoilers*) and what future seasons may head in store for Stormfront, A-Train and The Deep, and also Aaron Sorkin’s new legal drama, THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 (33:25), and Miranda July’s idiosyncratic dark comedy, KAJILLIONAIRE (49:17).
