The Outcome of White Evangelical Power: Sedition & Insurrection.
It's 2021.  Ossoff & Warnock won the Senate, and the next day Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building after being incited by the President himself and encouraged by Senators Cruz and Hawley. 5 people died.  White evangelicalism bears much of the burden for this by creating an environment--over decades!--that encouraged this.  This episode is only partly scripted. It's unedited. "Regular" programming will return soon. Follow me on Twitter @brchastain. Powers & Principalities Episode 5: The Unholy Alliance of Trump & the Religious Right with Sarah Posner
My guest this week is Sarah Posner, author of the book Unholy: Why White Evangelicals Worship at the Altar of Donald Trump (Bookshop, Amazon). In her book, Sarah details the intellectual and social connections between the New Right, the Religious Right, and alt-right - and the ways in which white evangelicals provide moral and political cover for the Trump administration. Further, her work indicates the ways in which the Trump administration has rewarded white evangelical support by pursuing policies in line with their interests.  Unholy is an essential text for anyone who hopes to understand that evangelical support for Trump is not an aberration but rather a culmination of decades of work within conservative circles.  Follow Sarah on Twitter @sarahposner. Powers & Principalities, Episode 2: Jesus and John Wayne, with Kristin Kobes Du Mez
My guest this week is Kristin Kobes Du Mez, author of the new book Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation (Bookshop.org, Amazon).  Her book examines the role that cultural ideals of evangelical masculinity have been influenced more by John Wayne than by Jesus of Nazareth. If you've spent time in white evangelical circles, much of this will ring true; if you wonder why evangelicals are drawn to "strong men" like Donald Trump, her work will help explain why. By tracking the development of "masculinity" through 20th & 21st century popular evangelical culture, Du Mez helps us understand our present moment better. Powers & Principalities, Episode 1: The Power Worshippers with Katherine Stewart
This week's episode features a conversation with Katherine Stewart. Katherine Stewart is the author of The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism (Bookshop.org, Amazon.com).  Her book provides a comprehensive overview of the tactics and strategies Christian nationalists have employed in American politics:  teaching false historical narratives about American history (and the history of the Religious Right itself), deteriorating the public education system, lobbying state legislatures, mobilizing religious voters with sophisticated data modeling, and much more. This conversation just scratches the surface of what is covered in her book, and is more timely than ever.  Follow Katherine on Twitter @kathsstewart. Follow Blake on Twitter @brchastain. Verdell Wright
My guest this week is Verdell Wright. In this conversation Verdell and I talk about growing up in the 7th Day Adventist tradition, asking big questions at an early age, the difficulties of attending church when you're seminary educated, depression, sexuality, Christian atheism, and religious humanism. It's a wide ranging conversation, but I hope you listen through to the very end. In the final section, Verdell talks about his work in highlighting Black queer voices, and what we can all do to highlight and support them as well, including financially, emotionally, and by including them in events and elsewhere. Be sure to follow the Dell & Jess Show on Twitter: twitter.com/dellandjess, and follow Verdell there, too: twitter.com/mr\_wrightaway. You can follow me on Twitter [at] brchastain. Heretic Husband
This week’s guest is the anonymous blogger Heretic Husband. He tells his story, which begins in Catholicism and continues through evangelicalism and agnosticism. The Kevin Garcia Needs to Sit in the Front Row
Today’s guest is Kevin Garcia, a writer, podcaster, and all around thoughtful guy. It’s hard to summarize Kevin’s story. Ultimately it’s s story of self acceptance and finding God’s love, but it took time to get there. It’s very moving, but it’s best told in his own words. A couple notes: the language in this one is a little blue, so don’t play it around kiddos or people sensitive to profanity - just use discretion, ok? Also, Kevin was recording from a public spot, so there’s a lot of really great background ambience happening that I actually dig and I hope you do too. Also, there is frank talk of suicide and reparative therapy so if that is triggering, please be advised. - Follow Kevin on Twitter @thekevingarcia\_ Subscribe to A Tiny Revolution: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/tiny-revolution-kevin-garcia/id1139407923?mt=2 Visit Kevin's website: thekevingarcia.com Follow Blake on Twitter: @brchastain Follow the show on Twitter: @exvangelicalpod Follow the show on Instagram: @exvangelicalpod Follow the show on Facebook: facebook.com/exvangelicalpod Support the show on Patreon: patreon.com/exvangelicalpod Richard Rohr's Everything Belongs: http://amzn.to/2enezKE Intro: "Be Yourself" by Frank Ocean https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/be-yourself/id1146195596?i=1146195715 Interlude: "How Great (feat. A Conversation with Steven Jones
In Episode 2 of Exvangelical, I speak to Steven Jones. Steven Jones shares his story of growing up within evangelicalism and attending Christian college, facing family struggles, and--at the risk of being too reductive--losing and finding belief. He also shares about his engagement with the mystical tradition, including a series of experiences he had that are worthy of the word "revelation." Steven's story is redemptive and full of hope. It clocks in at close to two hours, and is absolutely worth a listen.

It Begins
This first episode of Exvangelical features a long, free-form with American religious historian Dr. Jonathan Dodrill, who is a longtime friend of mine. We discuss how we met at Christian college, our experiences there, as well as how our viewpoints have changed since then. We also spend a good amount of time talking about modern evangelical politics, the current election cycle, and the baffling case of Donald Trump. This conversation was originally recorded on 6/28/16 and has been edited. Frank language is occasionally used, so be wary of young ears.
