Pennsylvania, AKA the Keystone State, is known for many wonderful things, like the birthplace of independence and Mr. Fred Rogers. But did you know PA is also home to the homeliest creature in the world? This week, Sarah's creature feature takes us into the Hemlock forests of Northern Pennsylvania to examine the Squonk, a creature so ugly it hides in shame and spends its day weeping.

30 - Dirty Deeds

30 - Dirty Deeds

We bury our secrets...and sometimes our dead bodies, as well. This week, we cover two stories where the dirtiest deeds really do involve dirt. For our fairy tale, Hans Christian Andersen has us covered with the Rose Elf, a nice little tale about karma. For our true crime story, we take a trip up north to Canada and dig up some dirt on Bruce McArthur,  one of the deadliest known serial killers in Toronto and the "most prolific" gay serial killer in Canada.

What is hatched by a cockerel from the egg of a serpent and is reputed as the king of serpents?  It's not a riddle...it's a Basilisk! This week, Megan tells us about this mythological creature found in European Bestiaries and legends. The basilisk is known for appearing in Harry Potter lore and for killing people with one simple look. Good thing this is not a visual podcast!

'Tis the season to be jolly! Fa-la-la-la-la... To celebrate Yuletide, we're each whipping out our favorite Christmas story. Megan celebrates her Norweigan heritage with The Cat on the Dovrefjell and Sarah gets literary with Hans Christian Andersen's The Snowman. If you're looking for something short and sweet to balance out all the Christmas cookies and eggnog, this one is for you! We'll see you next year!

17 - Oh! Sweet Child of Mine...

Weeee're back! And we decided to kick off season 2 with a bit of a bang! Well, not literally. Here's a bit of a warning: this episode may be a bit hard to swallow for some people, and we don't recommend this episode for small children. Why? Well, we're afraid they might get eaten. This week, we cover the famous tale of Hansel & Gretel and one of the most gruesome murders to date: Albert Fish.  If you like our podcast, don't forget to rate, review, subscribe, and let your [adult] children know!  If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or shoutouts for your favorite badass witch, feel free to reach out by emailing us at fairytalltalespod@gmail.com!  You can also get social with us:  Instagram: @fairytalltales Twitter: @fairytalltales Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FairyTallTales www.fairytalltales.com

Sometimes, parents do the unspeakable. This week, Sarah & Megan take a hard look at some bad mothers who hurt their children in unimaginable ways. We explore the legend of La Llorona, "the weeping woman," and Texas mother Christy Sheats who thought her children were the ultimate sacrifice for her revenge.  If you like our podcast, don't forget to rate, review, subscribe, and let your mom know!  If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or shoutouts for your favorite child, feel free to reach out by emailing us at fairytalltalespod@gmail.com!  You can also get social with us:  Instagram: @fairytalltales Twitter: @fairytalltales Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FairyTallTales www.fairytalltales.com

14 - Lifestyles of the Rich & the Feline

Boots and cats and boots and cats and boots... If you give a cat a pair of boots, they're going to ask you to pretend to be a rich and beautiful man (*cough* Chris Hemsworth) so you wind up with a nice new palace and princess bride. But sometimes the good ole "fake it till you make it" mantra just doesn't work. Just ask Anna Delvey AKA Anna Sorokin AKA the Soho Grifter. This week, Sarah & Megan explore the concept of lying and when it does (and does not) work out to be happy ever after.  If you like our podcast, don't forget to rate, review, subscribe, and let all your carriage driver know!  If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or shoutouts for your favorite Australian, feel free to reach out by emailing us at fairytalltalespod@gmail.com!  You can also get social with us:  Instagram: @fairytalltales Twitter: @fairytalltales Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FairyTallTales www.fairytalltales.com

13 - Liver Let Die

13 - Liver Let Die

Would you eat a raw rabbit liver if it was a potential cure for your disease? Or how about if it was the perfect act of revenge? This week, Sarah & Megan take a trip down under the sea with a look at Sugungga, a Korean fairy tale about a sick king and an intelligent rabbit. We also really put the tall into Fairy Tall Tales with the legend of good ole' Liver-Eating Johnson, a Mountain Man who supposedly sought revenge in a very offal way.  Note: this podcast does not recommend eating raw liver (rabbit or otherwise) for either medicine or vengeance. We are neither medical professionals nor vigilantes.  Ps. Sarah dedicates this episode to Rich. 12 - Turn and Face the Strange

Have you ever had a friend (or child) just completely change on you? Maybe they act different, look different, or hey, perhaps they even have different dental x-rays. Sometimes it's just college. But maybe it's a changeling. This week, Sarah & Megan take a look at Changelings: both the Grimm Brothers' version and the real (and really creepy) story of the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders and the disappearance of Walter Collins. To quote Angelina Jolie: "That's not my son! But that is my podcast." Ps. Sarah dedicates this episode to the late, great David Bowie.   If you like our podcast, don't forget to rate, review, subscribe, and let all your children classmates know!  If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or shoutouts for your favorite changeling, feel free to reach out by emailing us at fairytalltalespod@gmail.com!  You can also get social with us:  Instagram: @fairytalltales Twitter: @fairytalltales Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FairyTallTales www.fairytalltales.com

11 - Tree of Life & Death

If you ever took an English lit class, you probably know that trees are kind of a "big deal" in stories. And if you're any kind of nature buff, you know trees are worthy of all the hugs. But what happens when the trees get a little...overboard. This week, Sarah & Megan take a look at the Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo, where the former gets an epic transformation because the latter just won't make like a tree and leave. For our true crime story, we cover Matthew J. Hoffman's very strange house of leaves (not to be confused with the novel).    If you like our podcast, don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe and let all your environmental science classmates know!  If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or shoutouts for your favorite tree, feel free to reach out by emailing us at fairytalltalespod@gmail.com!  You can also get social with us:  Instagram: @fairytalltales Twitter: @fairytalltales Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FairyTallTales www.fairytalltales.com

10 - Hide Your Kids, Hide Your Spouse

If a strange man comes into your room unannounced to help you with your job/mission, RUN. It doesn't matter if you know his name or not. It's bad news. Especially when you have a baby or are yourself a child. This week, Sarah & Megan explore the theme of why the hell do these guys want children? For our fairy tale, we explore Megan's favorite: Rumpelstiltskin. And for our true crime story, we dive into the out of this world tale of how young Jan Broberg was kidnapped by Robert Berchtold. Twice. 9 - Don't Trust Handouts From Strangers

9 - Don't Trust Handouts From Strangers

This episode is a special one, as it's the very first pairing we ever did--the fairy tale and true crime story that started it all. But it's also a very brutal episode, folks, so hold onto your stomach contents. This week, Sarah & Megan take a look at two very badass young women who survive the unthinkable. Our fairy tale hails from the Brothers Grimm: The Girl Without Hands. We pair this with the incredible survival story of Mary Vincent and how she lived after her encounter with "The Mad Chopper," Lawrence Singleton. But don't worry--pop culture references and bad singing are aplenty to lighten the mood a little bit.  If you like our podcast, don't forget to rate and subscribe and tell your next door neighbors! 8 - Bad Parenting: The Perfect Storm

Many parents will do just about anything for their children...including look the other way when it comes to property damage and murder. This week, Sarah & Megan question how responsible parents are for the actions of their children by looking at the Nigerian folktale about Lightning and Thunder and the tragic true crime story of Elliot Turner and how he murdered Emily Longley.  If you like our podcast, don't forget to rate and subscribe and let your mom know!  If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or shoutouts for your ex, feel free to reach out by emailing us at fairytalltalespod@gmail.com!  You can also get social with us:  Instagram: @fairytalltales Twitter: @fairytalltales Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FairyTallTales

7 - How to Have Your Enemy for Dinner

They say that you are what you eat...and for some humans, that is especially true. This week, Sarah & Megan dive into a doozy of an episode featuring cannibalism and some horrible parenting. First, we take a look at Sarah's favorite fairy tale, The Juniper Tree. Our true crime story pairs exceptionally well: Katherine Knight, the killer cannibal from down under. If you made some popcorn for this one, you might not have an appetite to eat it. 6 - Hungry Like the Boy Who Cried Wolf

6 - Hungry Like the Boy Who Cried Wolf

Is that a wolf growling, or just your stomach? Don't lie to us now--you know nobody likes a person who cries wolf. If we're being honest here, this week Sarah & Megan talk about your favorite fable from Aesop all about a young Boy Who Cried Wolf. And because everyone loves a wolf pack (even if it's just a party of two, maybe three), we pair it with wannabe jailhouse informant Greg Scarpa Jr., whose cries of his own have kept him in prison, despite potential ties to 9/11 and the Oklahoma City Bombing. Trust us, you don't want to miss this episode...come on, would we lie to you?
