12. a wine down for the finale!

12. a wine down for the finale!

we're closing out the season with a wine down. thank you all for tuning in with us and supporting us on this ride. we're looking forward to season two but this break is so necessary!

show notes:

while discussing rita moreno, i—@brinnoire—referenced the Grapevine's most recent episode (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIg6if0NBlY)

during the conversation about the colonization of Black beauty, @ayeshakfaines paraphrased a passage from moreno's memoir. while editing this episode, i learned that Ayesha recently passed away. The Grapevine is an amazing platform that amplifies the voices of some of my favorite Black millennials. Ayesha K Faines was top tier and she will be deeply missed.

also, historian Lyra Monteiro's interview about Lin Manuel Miranda's 'Hamilton' can be read here: https://slate.com/culture/2016/04/a-hamilton-critic-on-why-the-musical-isnt-so-revolutionary.html

8. representation, DC3 & janet mock

we had fun recording episode 8! we started with a conversation about representation, diversity and inclusion — it matters but it ain't everything! during the wine down we celebrated the 20th anniversary of Destiny's Child's iconic album 'Survivor' by running through the tracklist and reminiscing on each song! we closed with a discussion brought on by Janet Mock's no-holds-barred speech at the 'Pose' premiere party.

Enjoy!

7. therapy for Black people, the academy vs. the people of Wakanda & babies?

episode 7 opens with a conversation about the importance of prioritizing (and normalizing) the mental health of our people. after some heavy talk, we got into the wine down, sipped rosé and cackled at the thought of Anthony Hopkins winning the academy award for best actor over our beloved Chadwick Boseman—among other 'oscar' commentary.

other topics include: the allure of hand-written letters, children and parenthood. enjoy!

the title explains it all...

@t.andrew.jones has had it with his local medical institutions and @brinnoire is stuck in that awful space between "still sick & sick again" so give the hosts a pass this week... it's a miracle this episode was released on time.

topics: lil nas x, a dash of christianity, allyship & solidarity, activism & visibility, commercializing & capitalizing off the movement, tina turner's documentary, cynthia erivo's 'Aretha' and the isley brothers / earth, wind & fire verzuz!

4. consent, cantaloupe & d’angelo

we begin episode four with a chat about family drama and people vacationing like we're not still in a pandemic before getting into a conversation about consent and sexual assault. (note: we reference/spoil Michaela Coel's HBO series 'I May Destroy You' so timestamps are listed after the episode description for those who need/choose to skip this discussion)

while entering the wine down segment we learn that we're both voting cantaloupe in a 'cantaloupe vs. watermelon' battle, then we talk about the golden globes and some of the Black actors/films that won, colorism in film/the film industry, and we end the segment by celebrating the one and only, D'Angelo!

timestamps:

10:05-43:44 topic of the day segment: #ContentWarning—conversation centering consent (sexual assault is discussed)

43:45 anchor ad

44:24 the wine down segment

1:14:44 closing remarks and giving thanks to our new patron, taaliba!
