Farm Dog

By Goats On The Go®
The podcast about the working dogs of farming, ranching, homesteading, and rural living. Presented by Goats On The Go® and hosted by its founder, Aaron Steele.

We discuss the fascinating history and current practice of humans working with dogs to make a living from the land. Our chats with experts cover breeds, training, on-farm experiences, and more. Herding (stockdogs) and livestock guardian dogs are frequent topics, but terriers, hunting dogs, and good ol' all-around farm dogs are up for discussion, too. If it produces, protects, or provides for our rural lives, we'll talk about it.

Ep. 28: The Border Collie for farm, ranch, and trial
If the question is, "What breed of stockdog should I get?", the Border Collie is virtually never a wrong answer. It might not be the perfect answer for your particular taste, livestock, and situation, but it would be hard to go wrong with a Border Collie. It's been Scott Glen's right answer since 1984 both on the ranch and the trial circuit, and he's here to tell us why. Welcome to Farm Dog. Ep. 27: Talkin' tree dogs
While you and your stockdogs are fast asleep in your beds, Ben Sheets is likely out in the woods with another kind of working dog. Multipurpose "tree dogs" were once a near necessity for people living close to the land, and while they are no longer as critical as they once were, their partnership can still make our rural lives even richer. Ep. 26: Mining Border Collie trials for farm and ranch stockdogs
Who would want a "washout" stockdog? Or even a retired one? The first implies failure, the second that its best days are behind it. But if it comes from the field trial world, there's a good chance that dog will have more talent and high level training than any pup we raise and train ourselves for farm and ranch work. A pro is a pro, even if it didn't make it in the big leagues. Welcome to Farm Dog. Farm Dog is presented by Goats On The Go® and hosted by its founder, Aaron Steele. Ep. 25: The Karakachan - challenging assumptions about livestock guardian dogs
True or false? Livestock guardian dogs should weigh at least 100 pounds. LGD's should bark at everything they can't identify. LGD's should be aggressive and predatory. LGD breeds must have names that are difficult to pronounce. Dr. Phillip Sponenberg, is here to give us some surprising answers based on his breed of choice -- the Karakachan. Ep. 24: Hangin' Tree Cowdogs, Batman, and Jared Lewis Lee
Batman -- the superhero -- is tough, but so are all superheros. What makes Batman so cool is the way he brings the bad guys to justice in style, wearing the cape and cowl and driving the Batmobile. Batman the Hangin' Tree Cow Dog and the rest of Jared Lewis Lee's kennel bring a similar mix of toughness and style to the stockdog world. Welcome to Farm Dog. Ep. 23: What's a stockdog clinic for?
Stop me if you've heard this one...A novice, a pro trainer, and 15 dogs walk into a barn in Wisconsin...Seriously though, I attended my first ever stockdog clinic recently and my eyes were opened. Trainer Rick Hardin is here to help me unpack what was an extremely valuable experience. No joke. Welcome to Farm Dog. Shar-pla-nee-nats. Say it with me... "Shar-pla-nee-nats." Got it? Me either. Fortunately, we don't need to know how to say it in order to appreciate this livestock guardian dog breed. From Yugoslavia to Alberta by way of Holland, Louise Liebenberg will tell us why these dogs were worth all the hassle -- and the tongue twisting. Welcome to Farm Dog. Ep. 21: Network effects of stockdogs
According to Wikipedia, a network effect is the phenomenon by which the value or utility a user derives from a good or service depends on the number of users of compatible products. I don't know much about that, but what I do know is hearing from and being around lots of stockdog people is much better than fewer. Welcome to Farm Dog. Ep. 20: The Australian Kelpie - "They just suit me better..."
What makes one breed of stockdog a better fit for someone than another breed? Is it a personality match between human and dog? Is it the kind of stock or the size of the herd? How about the terrain, vegetation, and climate? If you ask Trey Rutherford, it's all of those things and more that make the Australian Kelpie the right breed for him. Welcome to Farm Dog. Are livestock guardian dogs for the birds? With thousands of acres, 10 species of pastured livestock, and furred and feathered predators to contend with, there's no better place to find out than at White Oak Pastures in Georgia. Ep. 17: The English Shepherd - Swiss Army knife of farm dogs
If the English Shepherd was a baseball player, it would be a utility infielder -- steady, reliable, and able to shift between a variety of jobs on a moment's notice. Even though specialists may be able to perform a narrow range of tasks with greater style, the English Shepherd could be the ideal stockdog for diverse, small farms. Welcome to Farm Dog. Ep. 15: The discerning LGD - Colorado Mountain Dog
Can a livestock guardian dog be trusted to stay with its herd even if it's enjoyed some moments on the porch in the past? Must it show suspicion and aggression toward every unfamiliar thing it encounters? Is it capable of discernment? The Colorado Mountain Dog might just challenge some of our assumptions about what LGD's are capable of. Welcome to Farm Dog. Ep. 14: Dog power vs. grizzly power - Blackleaf Guardians
When you raise sheep on pasture surrounded by the largest carnivore in North America, mountain lions, and a local pack of wolves, you'd better have your act together when it comes to predator protection. For Steve Skelton of Bynum, Montana, that means his sheep live with a security detail of at least 10 livestock guardian dogs representing four or more different breeds. Welcome to Farm Dog. Ep. 13: The Australian Cattle Dog is not for everyone...and that's a good thing
The Australian Cattle Dog (ACD), obviously, was bred for cattle work. But today's farmers and ranchers don't often demand much from the breed, and its appeal to pet owners is strong even though some of its cattle dog instincts are undesirable for domestic life. With pressure to change coming from all sides, who's going to bat for the working genetics of the ACD? Welcome to Farm Dog. Gary Williams is a cowboy, an author, and a horse and stock dog trainer,  but he's not a geneticist. So when he went looking for pure McNab dogs  to be the foundation of his breeding program, he kept an eye out for a single characteristic that told the dogs' genetic histories as accurately as  any DNA test -- the unique McNab working style. Ep. 6: What makes a cow dog a cow dog?
To Randal Walker, a rancher and stock dog trainer out of Toppenish, Washington, “cow dogs” are border collies, not all border collies are cow dogs, a fearful dog is certainly not a cow dog, and while it might tell you something about its character, a cow dog is not necessarily required to gather cattle from the Pacific Ocean. Ep. 1: 25 farm dogs, 1200 sheep and goats, 1 rancher
Greg Christiansen is the owner of Grandview Livestock, a Kansas sheep and goat operation that utilizes dozens of livestock guardian dogs (LGD's) and a couple of herding dogs to provide a living for himself and his family. He is also the author of Raising Meat Goats in a Commercial Operation. In this first episode of Farm Dog we discuss LGD breeds that Greg has put to work on his farm (Anatolian Shepherd, Akbash, Komondor, and Great Pyrenees) and the different working styles of the breeds. Greg tells us about his history with "gathering dogs" (border collies, heelers, and Australian kelpies) and how to manage the tricky balance between the herding dogs and the LGD's who may view the herding dogs as the predators from which their sheep and goats need to be protected. We also discuss herding dog training and the logistics of taking care of so many dogs across several scattered pastures.
