Early adopter mindset with Agtech | Simon Wright

The Optiweigh series with Farms Advice Podcast highlighting the early adopters of Australian agtech from a cattle producers side. With Optiweigh's in-paddock weighing proving it's worth time again. It's Simon Wright on today's episode that is a 5th generation farmer who is looking at nurturing the 6th generation through his kids. Coming from a high rain fall area in the New England he states "we're often the lasts one into the drought, but that can also mean that we're the last ones out of the drought". He grew up on his farm and went away to Orange Agricultural College to broaden his horizons. With 10 years going past he collected some live and business experience. Having come home in his late twenties right when the average age for kids returning to the family farm being the age of 27.

He talks about his mindset leaning towards being an early adopter and how it can pay dividends further down the line and open up other opportunities like carbon farming. He is always looking to upskill and educate himself and is running a solid operation.

"You can't expect yourself to know everything". Simon states having the right people around his has helped him improve their families position within the farming game.

Data Leads To Productivity Lift For Farmers | Optiweigh Series

Farms Advice Podcast focuses on growing agribusinesses and the individuals that work within them across Australia. How can we improve and optimise what we're doing each and every day. A scary fact is that most farmers on average only have 50 seasons of farming. If you look at it like that then it doesn't seem much. So why not look for solutions to save your time and money in the long run.

This week we launch the Optiweigh Connecting Data To Productivity series and extremely happy to partner with Bill and the growing team up in the Hills of Armidale, New England region. With over 300 Optiweigh's out in the paddocks of Australian farmers you can start to see that Bill has moved pass the early adopters and is gaining solid momentum into the global markets.

Find out what's happening with in-paddock weighing versus bringing your cattle to the yards each time to weigh them.

Plant Disease Modelling in Broadacre | Dr. Paul Melloy

This farmers, is a fantastic episode to wrap your ears around for the hours in the tractor. Whether you're still going in the tractor planting this years crop or you've luckily finished and enjoying some early rain especially along the East coast of Australia. Dr. Paul Melloy is a research fellow out of University of Queensland and has had his hand on the pulse for plant disease and how farmers can identify and prevent yield loss in their own crop.

Paul goes through the different apps available that are discussed on the episode so take a look and download if they're for you:

Blackleg canola manager (BlackLegCM) BlacklegCM- Blackleg Management App | Agriculture and Food
Sclerotinia canola manager (SclerotiniaCM) SclerotiniaCM - Sclerotinia Management App | Agriculture and Food
Yellow spot wheat manager (YellowSpotWM) YellowSpotWM - Yellow leaf spot management | Agriculture and Food
Stipe rust wheat manager (StripeRustWM) StripeRustWM | Agriculture and Food
Powdery mildew mungbean manager (PowderyMildewMBM) PowderyMildew MBM - Powdery Mildew management app for mungbean | Agriculture and Foo

The team is also working on delivering new crop disease models, such as: spatial risk of black spot in field pea; net-blotch in barley, Ascochyta blight in chickpeas and the soon to be released upper canopy infection tool in canola (UCI BlacklegCM).

The Grains Research and Development corporation (GRDC) are funding this work and anticipate if these apps are more widely adopted grain crop yield losses of at least 10%, due to disease, could be saved.

The “Disease epidemiology, modelling and delivery of management decision support tools” project I am working on is led by Jean Galloway and includes collaborating institutions and experts from across the country. All our models are built on up to 30 years of research trial data from all major growing regions.

You can catch Paul on Twitter at @PaulMelloy as this is where we found him for the podcast. Twitter can be a great resource for you as a farmer or someone who services the industry to stay connected and abreast of what is happening in the paddock or in the lab modelling for plant disease as Paul Melloy has been doing.

Managing Macadamia Farms through Digital Records | Theunis Smit

This is our 100th episode of Farms Advice Podcast. We're proud to partner with Agworld to bring you the conversations of operations, farmer owners and PHD scholars to give you insights into how they're operating Beyond Record Keeping.

Theunis Smit is working with the Macadamia Farm Management crew of 300+ workers at any one time. With this workforce comes a lot of responsibility on the individual but also on the managers. Theunis was biting at the bit when he had the opportunity to bring on a piece of agtech that would go on to help with their operating of Macadamia farms across the East Coast of Australia. As they're dealing with investors, they want to know where there money is going so inventory is a big one for them. Also looking at how they can improve their orchards and breakdown any inconsistency.

What I liked about this story specifically was the way he dealt with the employees adopting the agtech. He was able to get around the barrier by providing the tools each tractor needed to get the job done. He went and bought every one an iPad in order to utilise the products straight away and that they wouldn't see an adoption lag and then early adopters. This has brought the company together and allowed for greater transparency on and off-farm.

If you liked this episode make sure you share it with your mates so that we can reach more farmers across Australia.
