Sermon Series: Real Questions

People have plenty of questions, but the church doesn’t always feel like a safe place to ask them. In Real Questions, we will engage with real faith questions submitted from our community. Some of the questions might seem irreverent and you might wonder if it’s okay to talk about. If we only answer safe questions, we aren’t actually safe for questions. There aren’t always easy answers, but there is always an opportunity to grow and find God in the midst of life’s questions.

Sermon preached by Dallas Flippin, on Sunday, June 18, 2023 at the First Baptist Church of Jackson, MI.

"Advocating for Others" by Steven Owsley

Today’s Message: Advocating for Others

Looking to strengthen your spiritual life? Join us for an inspiring sermon by our interim worship leader, Steven, on making a habit of praying for others. Drawing from Luke 22, where Jesus prays for Peter’s faith to not fail, Steven will challenge us to be mindful of those around us and pray for their well-being. Don’t miss out on this powerful message of compassion and faith.

Series: The Force of Habit

It’s vital in faith to break out of your routines and to follow God into something bigger. But it’s also true that God speaks to us through the rhythms of our everyday life and practice. On our way to Easter, we’re going to encounter different everyday practices that can enrich our spiritual lives.

Does God Need My Belief?

Does God Need My Belief?

This Week: Does God Need My Belief?

Sometimes churches can give off the notion that your knowledge and beliefs are the most important part of your identity. We spend a lot of time worried about whether everyone believes the same thing and whether we can tolerate others who don’t. The opening of the Gospel of John, however, portrays God as accepting and persistent despite the unbelief of God’s creation. Undeterred by unbelief, God continues to love and invite people to trust and to fully live. In light of what we know about the beauty and limitations of our brains, this week we discuss finding acceptance in God regardless of your mental capabilities.

Series: Cosmic Christmas

In an expanding universe, what is it to proclaim God’s presence among us? In our sermon series, Cosmic Christmas, we’re taking a journey through the beginning of John’s Gospel, which begins not with a Bethlehem birth story, but with the creation of cosmos. As we journey through John’s Prologue, we’ll discuss time, space, and more as we reflect on faith in God and our place amidst our grand universe.

What Does It Cost?

What Does It Cost?

This Week: What Does It Cost?

How much do you think satisfaction costs? The prophet Isaiah writes a beautiful vision of a future where needs and desires are met without any money exchanging hands. What would it look like to be satisfied without money? Join us as we explore being satisfied no matter the size of our bank accounts.

Series: Satisfied

In a world always lusting for the next better thing, we’re taking time to reflect on what it means to be satisfied. There’s nothing wrong with longing for a better world – things should be better! Yet there is spiritual, physical, and mental benefits from learning how to be satisfied in the present moment as we work towards a world that looks more like God intended. Journey with us for this 3 week series on being satisfied.

Is There Enough?

Is There Enough?

This Week: Is There Enough?

What do you do when you're worried about if there will be enough? Is there enough food on my table? Is there enough money in my account? Is there enough time to get my tasks done? There's a temptation to turn inward when we're worried if there's enough. This week, we read the story of a prophet and a widow struggling through a famine. The prophet's advice runs contrary to our inclination, and yet it might be the thing that transforms our lives for the better.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Jesus told his followers that it wasn’t enough to love those who are easy to love. He calls us to love our enemies – and that doesn’t come naturally. Love might seem like an ineffective pipedream that can’t survive the everyday onslaught of negativity and criticism. And yet, the bridge of true love creates new paths to a better world.

This Week: What Am I Searching For?

If we ever have a chance to be satisfied, we have to first know what we’re looking for. Today, we’re reading a story about crowds who were unhappy with the way Jesus lived his life.

This Week: Is it Safe to Love?

How can we love our neighbors if we close off our hearts? Some of us close our hearts because we’ve been hurt. Others close our hearts because we’ve run out of space. This week, we’re reading from 1 Peter, where Peter encourages you to love with a tender heart, even if it risks pain. Join us as we seek how to do that everyday.

When is Freedom Dangerous?

When is Freedom Dangerous?

This Week: When is Freedom Dangerous?

Everybody wants freedom, but sometimes that freedom causes harm. The relationship between freedoms and laws can be tricky to navigate – with everyone having their own opinion on where to draw the lines. Paul wrote to churches in Galatia who were struggling with this. His advice – and his warning – is critical to loving your neighbor in a divided world.
