| 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 and Matthew 25:14-30 | November 19, 2023 | Dennis Sanders, preaching

"Christians believe, as that old song goes, that Jesus is the answer for the world today. Jesus matters. And because Jesus matters, then as Christians, we want to "double our investment.' We want to give it away. We want to tell people who might feel unloved that Jesus loves them."

Matthew 23:1-12 and Micah 3:5-12 | November 5, 2023 | Dennis Sanders, preaching

He [Jesus] calls on the disciples and the crowd that is listening to follow a very different way.

Jesus says the greatest among you will be your servant.

If you want to be exalted, don't stand out, but stand down. Don't wear fancy clothing, but instead, be humble and serve others.

Are We Who We Say We Are? (Matthew 22:15-22)

Matthew 22:15-22 | Twenty First Sunday After Pentecost | October 22, 2023 | Dennis Sanders, preaching

What is our ultimate loyalty? There is the rub. Jesus challenged his questioners when he made them reveal their true loyalties, and it wasn't God. And we have to search our own hearts and minds to know when have we put something else as our ultimate allegiance and our ultimate loyalty.

Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost |Romans 13:1-14 | September 10, 2023 |Dennis Sanders, preaching

Romans 13 can be misunderstood to justify oppression, but it's about love. Love fulfills the law, and we must support governing authorities that show love and justice while resisting those who don't Love is the ultimate law.

Lectionary Q for January 29, 2023

Lectionary Q for January 29, 2023

Lectionary Q is a resource for clergy and the laity to get ready for the upcoming Sunday using a text from the Revised Common Lectionary.  This week's texts are from Matthew 2:1-12 and Micah 6:1-8.

What are your answers? What are your questions? Send them to lectionaryq@substack.com.

Here are the questions for this week’s passage:

  1. This passage is usually called the Beatitudes.  This work comes from Greek which can mean blessed or happy.  Is there a difference between being blessed and being happy?
  2. How would you describe the people Jesus called blessed?
  3. What do the beatitudes say about following Jesus?  Is following risky or easy?
  4. What do the Beatitudes have to say about the state of the world?

Let’s ask some questions from Micah:

  1. The first part of the passage has the prophet speaking for God.  How would you describe God’s feelings?
  2. Why was God not interested in the response from people?
  3. In verse 8 it says, “He has told you, O mortal, what is good,” which seems to be the biblical way of saying “You already know what I want.”  Do you think the people really knew what God wanted?
  4. Verse 8 uses the word, “require.”  Does require something from us or does God desire something from us?`
