Sophie Cooper is a sound artist who Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (HCMF) refer to as “A crucial member of Yorkshire’s far-reaching experimental music scene”. Sophie’s practice pivots around new presentations of acoustic instrumentation (primarily the trombone) with electronics, challenging conventions around composition, text placement and performance.

ABOUT RETURN

A woman returns to the theatre after many months’ absence. Immersed in sound she drifts from room to room, rediscovering the lost voices and identities that lie deep within the brickwork.

Return is a promenade sound installation created by our director Estelle van Warmelo, writer Sara-Jane Arbury and contemporary composer Sophie Cooper. The project was commissioned by The Courtyard and marks the venue’s reopening following lockdown.
