Elle was one of the first writers I discovered and was inspired by when I got on twitter and began to find a bunch of writers publishing great work independently. It means a lot to me that she took some time to share thoughts on her life and newest book. Topics include: Nostalgia for the early 00s pre-corporate social media internet and how this informed her new book Gag Reflex, writing about mental health in a meaningful way over many years and artistic projects, how to write authentically in the voice of characters that are very different from you, among many other topics and tangents. We talk about his writing process and the details of some of the short stories he’s published, the ins and outs of running a small press, the difficulties and joys of publishing works in translation, his beginnings and life now as an expat freelance writer, film talk, how cold it can get in Canada, celebrity weed, among other topics.
