87. Song of Achilles: Ch. 1 - 19 w/ Wendy Tabor & Reiner Slay

TW: sexual assault & rape

After a brief hiatus, we are back and ready to go with a new book on our TBR list which is Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller! Joined by our friends Reiner and Wendy, we’re introduced to our protagonist Patroclus whose life changes after murdering a bully (by accident) and is exiled off to where he meets his forever main squeeze Achilles. Along with the awkward budding romance scenes and possible war looming in that will greatly affect our main protagonists, Brittany shares her elementary school romance trauma, Catherine doesn’t understand sexual fruit imagery, and Bartok makes a small appearance because he’s hungry for plump ripe figs.

86. The Art of Gathering

86. The Art of Gathering

It's been a long time coming but we are back! We are coming off our hiatus with Priya Parker's The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why it Matters. We both went into this book thinking that it was going to be about literally why we gather (maybe from an anthropology approach) and in any context. Parker focuses a lot of her book on gathering in a formal context (work meetings, etc) and events with a specific purpose (weddings, baby showers, etc.). She does make some good points that we can apply to our day to day lives though! Parker argues that any gathering of three or more people with a specific purpose should be organized in such a way to maximize the experience, and she states that most of us aren't doing so. She leads the reader how to host these gatherings to transform the experience. We might not have gotten everything out of it that Parker was intending, but we were able to apply many of her points to mental health and our podcast. We also are in awe that we are drinking the same seltzer and we discuss the idea of We are Here Days in Atlanta. Catherine pulls a Reiner and shows up to the podcast after watching an interview with Parker and Brittany decides to bring the whole staff of Olive Garden to Catherine's wedding. This, and more, on your favorite podcast! Cover art by Clayton Smith. Theme "Wee Fiddle, Wee Pipe" composed by Catherine Flinchum and performed by Brittany Ross and Catherine Flinchum. 85. Midnight Library: Love & Pain - How it Ends w/ Marie Walker & Reiner Slay

85. Midnight Library: Love & Pain - How it Ends w/ Marie Walker & Reiner Slay

TW: panic disorder, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, & suicide

After much delay, we are happy to be back and give you the final installment of The Midnight Library! We are joined by one old friend and one new friend! You know him, you love him, Reiner Slay (vocalist of Concrete Supergun) is back! We also have a new guest, Marie Walker, host of Culture Cult Show!

Nora has become tired of life jumping, but has life jumping become tired of her? After literally trying every life available to her, Nora thinks that she has found the life that she can live in, but certain aspects of that life keep her from being 100% satisfied, so she finds herself back at the library. It turns out that the library is falling apart and on fire. What happens next? Does Nora want to live or die?

We go on a mega rant about caffeine (if you want to hear more on that, feel free to join us on Patreon). We do have some serious conversations about gauging happiness, chess, and marmite. Marie tells us why modern marriages don't last, Reiner is convinced that Nora is a serial killer, Catherine gets overwhelmed by chess, and Brittany explains how she listens to the instructions of games (she doesn't). This and more on your favorite podcast.

84. Midnight Library: Fish Tank - Howl w/ Laurel Rockall & Dr. Chelsea Tanner

84. Midnight Library: Fish Tank - Howl w/ Laurel Rockall & Dr. Chelsea Tanner

TW: suicide, depression, pet death, self-harm

We are back and ready to continue our journey through the different lives of Nora Seed. Will she find the life that will make her happy? Joining us on this adventure are friends new and old! We have Dr. Chelsea Tanner, flutist, mindset coach, and host of Align Your Mind and Laurel Rockall, co-host of Hightailing Through History.

Nora Seed has come back from Australia to the realization that grief has kept her locked in one place, too depressed to take any action or move anywhere else. She decides to try life out an an Olympic swimmer, a glaciologist, and as a member of her old band, The Labyrinths, in the hopes that she can find a happier life elsewhere. She comes to realize how important her family is to her, what the value of her life is, and  what a successful life means.

What is the meaning of success? We ask and explore this question as well as a variety of other subjects, such as physics, solitude versus loneliness, the grey zone between life and death, and being so focused on one thing that you lose sight of everything else. Laurel asks what our personal libraries would be, Chelsea reminds us that the brain is an organ, Brittany is an audiophile, and Catherine is a glaciologist.

83. Midnight Library: Conversation About Rain - Fire w/ Izzy Holman & Wendy Tabor

83. Midnight Library: Conversation About Rain - Fire w/ Izzy Holman & Wendy Tabor

TW: pet death, suicide, depression

If you could live other variations of your life where you made different choices, would you? We explore that concept with Matt Haig's The Midnight Library with long time friends of the podcast, trombonist Izzy Holman (@sweetizzy123) and photographer/graphic designer Wendy Tabor (@designerwithfire). Our protagonist, Nora Seed, leads a crummy life. Or at least she thinks she does. Nora decides to kill herself and she finds herself in the Midnight Library, a place where she can be transported to other possible lives she could have lived if she had made different decisions. As long as the time is 00:00:00 in military or metric time, she is safe in the library. Nora finds herself living the life she (thought) she would have with Dan, the live where Volts is an indoor cat, and living in Australia with Izzy (not Holman!).

Join us for an episode filled with heartfelt feelings and good friends. Izzy and Brittany bond on their shared loved of the smell of gasoline, Catherine relates to "life fright," and Wendy gets personal about her hearing loss. Oh, and Brittany ran a marathon. This and more on your favorite podcast.

80. Think Again: Pt. 1 w/ Dr. Chelsea Tanner

Have you ever thought? Have you ever thought again? Have you ever thought about thinking again? Take a break from thinking with us and tune into our first part of Adam Grant's Think Again along with friend and guest of the podcast Dr. Chelsea Tanner, flutist, mindset coach, and host of Align Your Mind! The first section of Think Again deals with individual rethinking. What does this mean exactly? Something along the lines of reprocessing our thoughts and habits to make ourselves better, whether that's better at your job or better as a person. Some deep discussions came out of this conversation, such as an imposter syndrome deep dive, how to think again in music, and a throw back to Rebecca Black. As per rush, Brittany opens up about her grad school experience, Chelsea tells us how she tried to stop playing flute, and Catherine gets overwhelmed by rethinking. This, and more, on your favorite podcast.

Welcome to The Three Sopranos! Featuring Brittany the violin, Catherine the flutist, and Emily Crisp, the actual soprano and co-host of MMM Conversations! Your favorite team of sexy detectives is here to solve the latest mystery of...the last few weeks: who dun killed Andie Bell in A Good Girl's Guide to Murder! We did it, we finally got to the end. 78. Good Girl's Guide to Murder: Pt. 2 w/ Izzy Holman & Wendy Tabor

78. Good Girl's Guide to Murder: Pt. 2 w/ Izzy Holman & Wendy Tabor

TW: suicide, rape, self harm, pedophilia, murder

Okay, so, who dun it? We don't know yet, but we read and discussed Part Two of Holly Jackson's A Good Girl's Guide to Murder with two dear friends: trombonist and YouTuber Izzy Holman and graphic designer and photographer Wendy Tabor!

We get into the meat and potatoes of the story here. Turns out that Pip thinks she's an actual detective and has gotten super swept away with figuring out who killed Andie, and her methodology involves a lack of boundaries and a disregard for personal safety. We begin Part Two thinking that Naomi might have had something to do with the murder, but learning more about Mr. Ward, Max Hastings, Howie the drug dealer, and Daniel de Silva makes us have other suspects. What do we think? Brittany thinks Max dun it, Izzy and Catherine think Max is too much of an idiot to have dun it, and Catherine is very convinced that Daniel dun it. Who really dun it? Find out next episode!

In this episode, we learn about the street names for marijuana. Catherine and Wendy reminisce on better times doing their senior capstone projects (Vision Quest), Izzy makes some wild Pretty Little Liars connections, and Brittany gets meta about Wifi. This, and more, on your favorite podcast!

75. Comfort Book: Pt. 1 & 2

TW: depression, anxiety, panic attacks, suicidal thoughts, suicidal ideation, suicide

In another moment of amazing planning, we have read two books back to back that can be related to each other! This week we are starting Matt Haig's The Comfort Book, which did the whole hope thing much better than our last read, Everything is Fucked. In Haig's book, he has written a book filled with blurbs. Each blurb ranges anywhere from a few lines to a few pages, and the book is broken into four parts. In the first two parts, which Brittany has dubbed "Birth" and "Water," Haig dips into themes of comforting lists, hope, self-validation, and getting through hardship. We learn, for the first time, Catherine's true feelings on bread and Brittany is sick! This, and more, on your favorite podcast.

74. Everything is Fucked Ch. 8 & 9 w/ Emily Crisp & Malachi Marshall

Today we are joined by our friends Emily Crisp (soprano and co-host of MMM Conversations) and Malachi Marshall (baritone and cohost of MMM Conversations and Kiki with Kye) to discuss the end of Everything is Fucked, and oh boy, this is something else. We thought Mark took a different direction with some of his previous chapters. But no, we were so wrong. We went from a book that was about being the hope that you want to see and how to take action so the hope you want is the life you live, to complete AI take over. Were you surprised reading that? So were we. Listen to our hot takes and how we reacted to this book, as well as some deep conversations about kids and technology and social media. Malachi tells us about a seventh grade science project he did, Emily reminisces singing to customers at Starbucks, Brittany observes how obnoxious vocalists are, and Catherine questions her reality. 73. Everything is Fucked: Ch. 6 & 7

TW: childhood trauma

How would we rate our happiness? Probably a seven, even with Brittany not having internet and Catherine not having water. How would Mark Manson rate his happiness in Everything is Fucked? Well, you'll need to ask him for that, but we did dive deeper into his book and into his budding philosophical mind. Mark takes another turn in this section of his book, discussing pleasure seeking behavior, and the work of Kant and Nietzsche. We learn just how much Catherine wants too seduce Brittany, how shallow Brittany is, and we throw back to the fifty question surveys that we publicly gave away all our personal info on. 72. Everything is Fucked: Ch. 4 & 5

That moment when you're reading a self help book and it turns into a philosophy book out of nowhere. Mark Manson's Everything is Fucked takes a wild turn in these two chapters to describe the lengths that people would go for in the name of whatever they hold dear. To navigate the left turn this book took, we discuss religion, politics, cults, and how human advancement shaped us. One thing that really unites people is their common enemy, and our common enemy is Bartok. Catherine describes a time where she almost got sucked into the Mary Kay pyramid scheme and Brittany still doesn't know where Forks is. This, and more, on your favorite podcast!

71. Everything is Fucked: Ch. 1 - 3 w/ Matt Richards

TW: suicide, depression, anxiety, depression, childhood trauma, rape

After (over) a year, we have finally started the sequel to Mark Manson's The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck, Everything is Fucked: A Book about Hope! Is everything truly fucked? Viewing the world at the end of 2022 can definitely make it seem like some aspects are, but we can't just give up! Luckily we have Matt Richards, bassist and co-host of "MMM Conversations" to discuss what exactly we are avoiding and why things seem so desolate. But in the face of adversity, we can control some aspects of our lives, including our emotions. Truly embracing the not giving a fuck mentality, Matt and Catherine are hung over, Catherine gets real about her mental health, and we return to our original segment "Brittany Googles Something."

68. New Moon: Ch. 12 - 15

TW: suicidal ideation

Welcome to the Mom Chat Book Club, where we talk about what books we think the youth are into. Today we are revisiting Stephenie Meyer's New Moon. Jacob climbs some type of steroid-fueled, Miracle-Gro induced spruce tree to try to tell Bella why he's been acting so strange. But we finally learn his secret in this episode! In learning in secret, we are also brought more into Jacob's world. We also learn one of Catherine's darkest secrets (she started The Chamber of Secrets before The Sorcerer's Stone) and Brittany dies of second hand embarrassment, but that's a wolf thing. You don't need to worry about it.

66. New Moon: Ch. 4 - 7

TW: rape/sexual assault

If you thought last episode was angsty, wait until you hear this. We are back talking Stephenie Meyer's New Moon and diving deep into Bella's psyche as she embraces her inner 2008 emo self. Bella, who was also getting in touch with her inner T. Swift (according to Catherine) begins to find solace in her childhood friend Jacob Black. Seems like Bella might have a normal high school existence awaiting her, sexual tension and all! We ponder the big questions on this podcast: what if Bella and Edward went to therapy? what would Charlie's fan fiction look like? how do beans grow? was Stephenie Meyer following The Secret or Eat, Pray, Love? 65. New Moon: Preface - Ch. 3 w/ Matt Richards & Reiner Slay

65. New Moon: Preface - Ch. 3 w/ Matt Richards & Reiner Slay

TW: suicide & death

Bella Swan's birthday was yesterday! We tried to celebrate her birthday, but she was a total brat about it, so instead we decided to continue our journey through Forks with Stephenie Meyer's New Moon. Joining us in this birthday venture are Matt Richards, music teacher, bassist, and co-host of MMM Conversations and Reiner Slay, vocalist of Concrete Supergun! This is a particularly juicy episode, since we have just finished reading Fifty Shades of Grey this past summer, which led to a wild amount of comparisons between the two books. We also compare the lore in Meyer's universe along with other vampire and werewolf lore that we know. Reiner proposes the best Twilight fanfic, Catherine talks horoscopes, Brittany imagines a New Moon thriller, and Matt is late on this episode of your favorite podcast.

64. The Practice: Make Assertions - Unquenchable

We have reached the end of Seth Godin's The Practice! It took a hot minute, but we are finally there. Thankfully the last few chapters are straightforward. Finish this journey with us as we reflect back on what this book has (or has not?) to offer. We definitely have some mixed feelings here, as you'll hear in our review and recommendations. We chat about utilizing your available resources, the concept of ego and self-confidence, and He Who Must Not be Named. Also, special appearances by previous guests on this book, Cassie Holmes (@kassarilla), violist and medical professional, and Dr. Chelsea Tanner (@_chelseatanner) flutist, mindset coach, and host of Align Your Mind as they give their final thoughts on The Practice! Listen through to the end to get a tasty little sneak peak of our next book!

63. The Practice: No Such Thing as Writer's Block w/ Cassie Holmes

Is writer's block a real issue or is it something we have made up to avoid work? Should we use credentialing as gatekeeping in certain fields? Cassie Holmes (@kassarilla), violist and medical professional, joins us to unwrap these mysteries as we discuss the latest chapter of Seth Godin's The Practice. This chapter was pretty all over the place, and honestly, we are too. We stumbled upon a wild article, but we also discuss confirmation bias, and the concept of muses as creative inspiration. Tune in for our hot takes on writer's block!

62. The Practice: The Professional & Intent

Hang on to your headphones because this book ain't over yet! We are back talking The Practice. These two chapters were pretty concise, so we get some beefy stories in this episode, such as Catherine's origin story and when Brittany decided to become a full-time musician. Even though neither of us were feeling these two chapters, we did have some great discussions about free and low paying gigs and talent versus skill. Also, what's Catherine's problem with Kroger brand tortillas?

61. The Practice: Generous w/ Dr. Chelsea Tanner

Dr. Chelsea Tanner (flutist, mindset coach, and co-host of Align Your Mind) (@_chelseatanner) joins us again to discuss The Practice's Generous chapter! How does being generous apply to the Practice, you ask? Well, tune in and learn with us! We discuss some of Seth's implied and explicit examples of generosity and how that might help us. Also, we talk a lot about sailboats...If you enjoyed our conversation, consider checking out Dr. Chelsea Tanner's website.

60. The Practice: Trust Your Self w/ Cassie Holmes

New book time! We are starting The Practice by Seth Godin today with Cassie Holmes (@kassarilla), violist, photographer, medical professional, and Brittany's BFF. The first section in this book is "Trust Your Self," and did we learn to trust ourselves? Maybe? Maybe not? We point out some serious issues with this book while also discussing aspects that we enjoyed, but maybe could have been done better. As usual, it's not all serious; Brittany questioned her reading comprehension, Catherine gets triggered by positive thinking, and Cassie fakes axe throwing. Enjoy!

You asked, we delivered! Music isn't the only thing we attack, Wendy hates on American beer, Brittany hates on the metric system, and Catherine declares her stance as Switzerland.

Straight from Georgia's heat dome (and from Colorado) we are back with Chapters 7 and 8 of The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting! Matt Richards, co-host of MMM Conversations, joins us today as we continue through The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting! Evanna continues down the path of anorexia and ends up being hospitalized. Even though none of us have been through an eating disorder, we are all amazed by the relatability of Evanna through her experience and her as a person. We open with a cross over with The Hobbit, the last book we have read! We discuss using dark humor as a coping mechanism, therapy, and Neopets. Brittany gets Ireland and England mixed up, Catherine learns what a feeding tube is, and Matt reflects on a better, younger time playing Pokemon. 53. Opposite of Butterfly Hunting: Foreword - Ch. 2 w/ Reiner Slay

TW: rape, eating disorders, anorexia

Reiner Slay, vocalist of Concrete Supergun, joins us to open The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting, which might be the most real book this podcast has read so far. Evanna Lynch, actress for Luna Lovegood, opens up about her struggles with anorexia. These chapters focus on Evanna's mindset as a 10/11 year old and how that led to her future struggles. We also get in touch with our pre-puberty selves, remembering how hard being a teen and pre-teen really is. Anyone remember the ridiculous sizing at Abercrombie in the 2000s and 2010s? Also Brittany describes an easier time eating maple leaves, Reiner gives some insight from a male perspective, and Catherine questions if she ever hit puberty.

43. Do Nothing: Life-Back 1 - 3 w/ Reiner Slay

Work isn't life, so how do we get our lives back? Reiner Slay, vocalist of Concrete Supergun, has joined us to answer this question. The answers are in front of us: challenging our perceptions, removing ourselves from social media, and getting away from our desks! We discuss how to schedule our time, overtime being a requirement, and standardized testing. Reiner draws from his experience as a personal trainer, Brittany finds a way to tie Bob's Burgers into the podcast, and Catherine calls out KSU's library. Valkyrie is upset she isn't the main character. Wedding gigs and Borat get involved too. That's what she said.
