Ignorance is NOT Bliss | Launch Event
In this launch event, we shared the exciting launch of our new courses, website and community, plus an exciting launch offer! Grab it before 8th March using the code LAUNCH50
Margaret Atwood called the saying 'What you don't know won't hurt you “a dubious maxim: sometimes what you don't know, she says, can hurt you very much.” I would agree, especially when it comes to not even knowing what we don’t know and when that ignorance can really trip us up! In my view, this is very much the case when it comes to crossing cultures. There are at least 3 areas of ‘not knowing’ where we can save ourselves a lot of trouble by simply finding out. That is our objective with this webinar – to lift the veil a little bit and help you to see where some basic knowledge is a very good thing!
Ben Gilbert
We're thrilled to introduce Ben, our new Dean of Studies for FieldPartner English. A proper Third Culture Kid, Ben's experience and skillset makes him the perfect fit for this new role, so before he started officially, we managed to sit down and get to know him a little more. Growing up as a missionary kid had a range of challenges, not least when he returned 'home' to the UK and found he didn't really fit in. Ever since, Ben has held a range of educational and missional posts, and we're delighted to have him on board with us at FieldPartner!
Nicola Neal | Serving in Slums, Steps of Faith & Turning Tables

Samuel Renling
We had the chance to sit down with Samuel and hear a little about his cross-cultural story. Hailing from rural Sweden, Samuel's parent's service as missionaries had a significant impact on his own life, as he too has served in cross-cultural contexts, particularly with young people, and now as a husband to Joy, from Taiwan, he has a new insight being in a cross-cultural marriage. It's wonderful to sit down with this humble and faithful servant and compare notes on the cross-cultural journey! Special Episode | Transition & Change, Loss & Grief
This special episode is a recording of a live event we hosted with Tony Horsfall on the topic of working from a place of rest. To watch the video recording of the event, visit fieldpartner.org/change
At some point in our lives, we all face different types of changes that can lead to feelings of loss and grief. It could be as simple as switching jobs or as profound as losing a loved one. Change can be a challenging journey, but it doesn't have to be walked alone.
During this webinar, Tony shared his personal experiences and offered valuable insights from a biblical perspective, as well as practical tips to help navigate through these changes. It was an excellent event for anyone who is currently experiencing or preparing for a transition or grieving, especially if you're on the mission field. There was also a Q&A.
Tony served as a missionary with OMF in East Malaysia, and later headed up EQUIP, a missions training programme based in England. For a number of years, he was Pastoral Carer for MAF, visiting their teams in Africa on a regular basis. Tony has a God-given passion to help those in Christian service sustain themselves over the long haul of ministry. He is an author, retreat leader, mentor and friend. He has written ‘Working From a Place of Rest’ and ‘Rhythms of Grace’.

Lori Rogers
Our latest interview is with Lori Rogers, who leads MomentumYes, an exciting mission mobilisation organisation. Their free, 6-part video course is quickly spreading all around the world to over 50 nations, with multiple language translations in the pipeline! We had a great discussion, and discovered that we share the same heart - that every Christian has a vital role to play in fulfilling the great commission to the nations, whether going, supporting or mobilising. We highly recommend you check this out and have a look at MomentumYes: fieldpartner.org/momentumyes

Dr Mary Ho
Dr Mary Ho serves as the International Executive Leader of All Nations International, a global Christian missions organization. In this current role, Dr. Ho provides leadership and direction for All Nations which has grown to four hubs and 400 cross-cultural workers in more than 40 countries.
This is a wonderful interview, that is a little different from our others, reflective of Mary's role with All Nations as she shares her journey and her heart for the unreached people of the world. It's also filled with helpful thoughts for those sending, or considering mission for themselves.
In the early 1990s, God began birthing a heart for the poor and for the nations in Mary and her husband, John, while a young married couple working for World Vision in Taiwan. Later in Hong Kong, they were greatly impacted by being a part of the churches that grew out of Jackie Pullinger’s ministry. Such experience and passion led to a seamless transition into leadership roles years later with the work started by Floyd and Sally McClung in the USA. Mary began her role with All Nations International in 2016. Contact Mary at mho[@]allnations.international

Greg & Lisa
For security reasons, we can't share their real names, but Greg and Lisa have a story that is well worth hearing. After serving unreached people in China, they were interrogated by the Chinese Secret Police, and forced to leave. They have moved to Cape Town in South Africa, where they now serve refugees. These faithful servants of the gospel candidly share their walk, and the struggles it has brought them. We hope it will be an encouragement to you!

Elizabeth Trotter
Elizabeth and her husband Jonathan were missionaries to Cambodia. They returned to America during Covid lockdown in a sudden and difficult end to their years of ministry. During their time on the field, and since, they have dedicated much time to creating blogs, books, podcasts and more to share their wisdom and reflections, often on taboo subjects. Their book, Serving Well: Help for the Wannabe, Newbie, or Weary Cross-cultural Christian Worker is a valuable resource. Elizabeth serves as the editor for the excellent collective blog, A Life Overseas. In this interview, Elizabeth shares her journey to the field, from third-culture kid to newly married, to reluctant missionary. She shares her insights into homeschooling, writing about raw, personal topics and her experience of the difficult post-field season they went through. Check out their shared blog: trotters41.com.

Reuben Inwe
Our interview with Reuben Inwe is a fascinating one. His own story of encountering the Lord on a bus in Nigeria, then being led to serve and plant a church in a specific city in the north of England, is both dramatic and impacting. However, it is his challenge to the church in the West to believe more thoroughly in the gospel itself that was the most hard-hitting! Sometimes it is good for us to have a mirror held up to us and to have to see ourselves through the eyes of someone from another culture! Do listen to Reuben’s interview with an open heart and ask yourself what you/we all can learn from his challenge and perspective.

Michael Prest
Michael Prest is the director of our partner, UFM Worldwide. In this thought-provoking interview, he shares his personal story and how that led him to his current role today at UFM, an organisation that works to foster and nurture the role of the sending church in raising up and supporting cross-cultural missionaries. Read Michael's excellent guest post on our blog - The Privilege of Being a Sending Church.
This idea and principle is an integral part of our mission at FieldPartner. We have created resource maps (see 34:13) that demonstrate the relationship between the sending church and the field worker at each stage of their journey. Bev Gigney
Bev Gigney founded a children's home called Dove's Wings during her years serving in China, having had a clear call to go and work with children in that nation. Along her journey she experienced setbacks and tragedy, which sadly led to her having to leave the mission field very suddenly. An important part of her journey was her return, where she found the post-field life equally difficult, but can testify to God's faithfulness, and the way he has used her in this stage of her journey. We hope that Bev's story will inspire you, and for those who have had similar struggles, we hope it can encourage you. Special Episode | Working From a Place of Rest
This special episode is a recording of a live event we hosted with Tony Horsfall on the topic of working from a place of rest. To watch the video recording of the event, visit fieldpartner.org/workfromrest.
Tony looked at the important question: How can we joyfully sustain ministry over the long haul of life? The biggest mistake we can make in ministry is to try and work for God rather than work with God. Jesus himself shows us by his example how we can work in partnership with the Father.
Special Episode | Self-care for God's Servants
This special episode is a recording of a live event we hosted with Tony Horsfall on the topic of Self-care. To watch the video recording of the event, visit fieldpartner.org/self-care-event.
‘Self-care for God’s Servants’ asks the question ‘Is self-care valid?’ and then looks practically at ways in which we may care for others without neglecting our own needs. In particular, it looks at the discipline of stopping, and the practice of sabbath.
Tony served as a missionary with OMF in East Malaysia, and later headed up EQUIP, a missions training programme based in England. Katie Chen
Subscribe to the podcast to catch our latest episodes!
After being baptised at only 5 years old, Katie felt a clear calling to serve in Asia in her late teens and ended up in Taiwan doing her masters. During this time, she put down roots with a local church, starting a prayer room in her house with some friends and seeking God's will for their area, in Danshui, near Taipei. It was laid on Katie's heart that she was to dedicate her life to this area and, after meeting her Taiwanese husband, they planted a church in the area which they now lead.
During this interview, Katie explains her heart to walk in God's calling, even at the expense of other dreams, she gives insight into seasons of seeking God and she shares her desire to facilitate opportunities to step out in faith, as Jesus sent out His disciples in Luke 10.

Ruth Van Reken
Christine interviews Ruth Van Reken, member care expert and world-renowned author of bestseller 'Third Culture Kids'. Learn more about Cross-Cultural Kid here.
Ruth discusses her childhood as a TCK - 'Third Culture Kid' and how she did not come to terms with the impact on her life until adulthood. At the age of thirty-nine, she began journaling, trying to understand the full impact of my childhood. Eventually, this journaling became 'Letters I Never Wrote', later re-published as Letters Never Sent. Through that, she not only looked at her story but met and interacted with countless TCKs and adult TCKs (ATCKs) of all backgrounds and nationalities as well.
Ruth had a desire to be a missionary, which did not go completely as she would have planned it, but throughout a variety of trials, she has learnt much about trusting God and overcoming the difficulties of her upbringing. She is amazed to find just how far-reaching her work has been - not just to expats and refugees, but even children of cross-cultural marriages! This fascinating, honest and encouraging interview is a worthwhile watch for anybody with involvement in cross-cultural work.

Grant & Jean
Grant and Jean are missionaries from South Africa. In this interview, they share their journey leading to work in China, what it was like to have and raise children in a brand new culture. They tell us about continuing to seek the Lord's will throughout their life in mission. They challenge us not to leave our callings unpursued, but to seek out the Lord's will with the burdens he lays on our hearts. We love this quote from the interview: "We're really trusting God that...people can see if they are willing as well and put up their hands that God can give them an eternal inheritance that far, far outweighs anything we can get in this world!"

Lydia David
Lydia David is a missionary who has worked in China & Turkey. She was working as an occupational therapist when she was called to serve in China, where she ended up living and working for five years before moving to Canada. A remarkable chain of signs (including a famous shark!) indicated a new calling which led her to Turkey where she moved next, before having to return to the UK for the time being due to health reasons.
Lydia shares her heart for mission and the many ways the Lord has been faithful in different stages of her life so far, from dealing with the loss of a parent during her youth, to the current struggles of shielding during COVID lockdowns.

Peter Askew
Peter Askew serves cross-culturally in the north of England! His title is “Operations Manager for the Antioch Network Manchester”, an Anglican initiative, which plants churches in ethnically diverse communities and on housing estates across the Diocese of Manchester."
Pete is an old friend of the Patersons, Ross and Christine knew him when he was growing up in York, where his parents and they were involved in planting a church together (now known as Gateway Church in Acomb). In this interview Pete speaks of his own experiences as a young person working in different parts of Africa. But the real challenge he gives to the church in the UK is to see that “the world is now on our doorstep” - so many nationalities from across the globe now live within our borders that we can now obey the Great Commission just by crossing the street! However, we might still be well advised to get some cross-cultural training, and Pete kindly recommends FieldPartner’s courses to that end.

Christina Winrich
Christina Winrich was born in Wisconsin, came to faith as a musician working in France and then rashly offered the Lord a whole year of her life to serve Him in missions! After taking 3 short-term mission trips (one to South America and two to China), she landed up on a a year’s cross-cultural programme run by our Antioch School of Missions in China.
Her one year ultimately became five in China, largely spent using her skills as a special needs educator, then teaching oral English in a university. After that, she went for specific Bible training in Canada and eventually moved on to serve in Japan with Overseas Missionary Fellowship.
In this interview Christina shares openly about the challenges and joys of serving God in another culture (or two!). She shares movingly of how the Lord redirected her towards “less than 1% Christian” Japan and about the hard work of mastering a second Asian language with characters (though it does have a kind of alphabet as well!).

Christine Paterson
In this interview, Jen Bishop interviews Christine Paterson (co-founder of FieldPartner with husband Ross). Christine was born in Burundi of missionary parents, and lived in that region of Africa until she was 13 so her cross-cultural journey began really from birth. She had been through multiple experiences of culture shock before she even knew what it was!
Exposure to Chinese culture after marrying Ross and joining him in Taiwan in 1975 was a further example of that. Gradually Ross and Christine became aware of how many things had been much harder for them because neither of them had had any cross-cultural training or orientation. This fuelled a passion to provide such training for those they were to sending to work in China and beyond. That physical school, a one-year stand-alone programme, became the forerunner for what FieldPartner is now – an online resource to help people thrive not just survive in a cross-cultural calling.

Ross Paterson
An insightful interview with one of our co-founders - Ross Paterson.
It’s more than 50 years since Ross (founder of FieldPartner with his wife Christine) left for the mission field, with the backing of just one church behind him. At the time he was single and determined and sure of God’s leading, but he was also completely untrained in cultural terms. His first ten years spent in Taiwan were fruitful but they were also hard, as was the case for Christine when they married six years in.
By the grace of God Ross survived and has continued with longevity in service to China and the Chinese, but doing it the way we did is not what we recommend. That is what Ross stresses here, from his own experience. Indeed the very purpose of FieldPartner is to help those wanting to serve God in another culture to be well prepared for the challenges and then to thrive in their service.
In this interview Ross describes his own journey and how God called him clearly to serve the church and the people of China. Over the years he has lived a total of 23 years in Taiwan and a further 13 in Singapore - making a substantial part of his life spent in Asia. The Patersons still live in Taiwan, but plans are afoot for one more major transition back to the UK before too long!
