Uncut Gems and Kelly Armor
From Adam Sandler and and the Safdie brothers comes "Uncut Gems," a critical darling seemingly fueled by anxiety about the high-risk, high-reward world of the New York City underbelly. In addition to talking the movie, John, Erika, Stew (live from a train!), and Mike talk with Kelly Armor, an Erie native, folklorist and teaching artist working with Erie Arts & Culture.  Learn more about Kelly here.  Follow us on Twitter / Facebook / Instagram "night vibe" available via Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license. You have never seen a movie like Climax. From Gaspar Noe, a director that self-proclaims he makes movies only for his self-satisfaction and pleasure, Climax follows a dance troupe through a collective bad trip. Streaming on Netflix. John, Erika, Stew, and Mike talk with Jason McCann, an Erie native working grip and electric with film productions nationwide. Industry news includes the Chattanooga Film Festival. The Lighthouse and The Last FUQ
What’s a timber man want with being a wickie? This week, we explore mythology and masculinity on the edge of a grey, damp, isolated tower in an unknown sea. Willem Dafoe (OLD) and Robert Pattinson (YOUNG) star in The Lighthouse, streaming on Amazon Prime, a film that is best or worst viewed under quarantine, depending on who you ask. John, Erika, Jesse, and Stew are joined by Jesus Munoz, GEFO’s young protégé. Spoiler alert: he didn’t like the movie. He stands alone! A Serious Man and Lil Miquela
Seriously, what is going on here? Film fan and scholar Spencer Myers joins John, Erika, Jesse, and Mike to discuss his recommendation, the Oscar-nominated A Serious Man, streaming on Netflix. You might feel a camaraderie with protagonist Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlberg) as lots of horrible stuff is happening to him and he isn’t doing much about it. Sound familiar lately? John makes a case that we are living in Blade Runner 2020 and is reaching out to Lil Miquela’s agent for his next movie. Troop Zero and COVID-19 Update
Is there life on Mars? This week, John, Erika, Jesse, and Mike take the recommendation of listener Heather Steinbrink and watch Troop Zero on Amazon Prime. Christmas Flint dreams of a life amongst the stars and a chance to be on NASA’s Voyager Golden Record (which was a real, very cool thing in 1977). Based on film co-writer Lucy Alibar’s play Christmas and the Jubilee Behold the Meteor Shower, it’s full of fun names like Wiggly, Hell-No, and Smash. Erika plugs daily state and local COVID-19 updates as the don't-miss horror show of the century. A Ghost Story and What We Do In The Shadows
You’re invited...  This week John, Erika, and Jesse discuss What We Do In The Shadows, Hulu’s modern vampire comedy series starring Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, and Natasia Demetriou and based on the movie of the same name from hot-stuff New Zealanders Taika Watiti and Jermaine Clement. Another classic John pick, A Ghost Story, impresses Jesse and once she gets past the sheet-cloaked Casey Affleck, Erika falls in love, too. Streaming on Netflix; also starring Rooney Mara. Children of Men and The IT Crowd
Have you tried turning it off and on again? John, Erika, Jesse and Stewart agree: you can’t go wrong with the IT Crowd, a British comedy series starring Chris O’Dowd, Katherine Parkinson, and Richard Ayaode. John adopted it as the perfect palette cleanser for movies like Children of Men, this week’s movie pick by Erika’s husband, Mike. Featuring quite possibly Clive Owen’s best role, this movie is as bleak as it gets. In our era of pandemic reality, this one hits closer to home than it should. The King and The Boys
This week’s picks are all for the boys. This week, John, Erika, Jesse, and Stewart discuss The King, a Netflix original. Henry V was quite the royal, ascending to the throne and actually hitting the battlefield beside his army. Imagine that happening today? Maybe star Timothée Chalamet can, if only he could breath under the weight of 30lb armor. If medieval violence wasn’t enough, The Boys serves up vigilante justice to arrogant superheros with humor and a grenade inserted into an uncomfortable place. Starring Karl Urban and Jack Quaid on Amazon Prime. Follow us on Twitter / Facebook / Instagram "night vibe" available via Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license. Portrait of a Lady on Fire and The Spy
Oui and Ken! This week, John, Erika, Jesse, and Stewart chose a French love story and an Israeli espionage drama. Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a slow-burn tale of an artist and her dynamic muse with, arguably, the best payoff ending this group has seen in years. Starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel and streaming on Hulu. The Spy, executive produced by and starring Sasha Baron Cohen, is a mini-series on Netflix depicting the (mostly) true story of Israel’s most notorious spy, Eli Cohen. We say YES to both. Dumplin' and The Story of Film: An Odyssey
You go girl, learn some film history! This week, John, Erika, Jesse, and Stewart find body positivity with Netflix’s Dumplin’ (Danielle Macdonald), a full-figured highschooler who, with the help of Dolly Parton and some drag queens, ends up competing in her mother’s (played by Jennifer Aniston) beauty pageant. Even Stew found it heartwarming. The team went to film school watching the first three episodes of The Story of Film: An Odyssey, streaming on Hulu. COVID, Candyman and Devs
In our first ever COVID-19 podcast, John, Erika, Jesse, and Stewart are working remotely and working out the audio kinks. Each week - indefinitely - we will recommend one movie and one series streaming on an ubiquitous service like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Shoutout to editor extraordinaire Britton Rozelle for making us coherent and worth listening to. Candyman, Candyman, Candyman. BOO! This week, we throw back to Candyman, starring Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen. Watchable on a Netflix-and-chill night, it lays the groundwork for Jordan Peele’s remake allegedly coming this year. But with the state of the film industry... we don’t know. Do you? Devs. DEVS. If you watch one series in all of 2020, make it "Devs." Starring Sonoya Mizuno, Nick Offerman, and Alison Pill, it’s a near-perfect sci-fi mini-series. Trust us.
