Sherlock: The Reichenbach Fall / Tullamore D.E.W. 14
Bob and Brad review their first episode of television with the Series 2 finale of the BBC show Sherlock. This game-changing, 90-minute episode is by far the most controversial and well-received episode across the series' run, and the guys talk about its merits both as a TV episode and as a film. Meanwhile, they sample Tullamore D.E.W. 14, their first expression form the Irish whiskey brand since Season 1. Will this well-aged whiskey live up to the great value of the flagship offering? Top Fives: IMDb Was Wrong
In the latest installment of their Top Fivers series, Bob and Brad shine a light on some underrated favorites. These are films that IMDb users voted a 6.5 or lower on a 10-point scale, but that our hosts would award at least an 8.0. Meanwhile, they sip on two whiskeys from Spirits of French Lick, an Indiana distillery making waves in the world of craft whiskey. These bottled-in-bond bourbons include a buckwheat bourbon, which is certainly the first time our hosts have used those words. Film & Whiskey Podcast. New episodes every Monday. Chef / Rebel 100
Bob and Brad watch the feel-good Jon Favreau film Chef, a movie that's about as delectable as the food it features. Boasting a great lead performance by Favreau, the star-studded dramedy brings in road trip and hang-out elements to make this one go down easy. Meanwhile, they sip on a whiskey that they agree might be the best value in all of bourbon: the absolutely delightful Rebel 100. At $20, is there a better wheated bourbon out there? Bonus: Jailhouse Rock and Elvis Whiskey
Bob and Brad recently received bottles of Elvis Whiskey, a new line of sourced Tennessee whiskey and rye from Grain & Barrel Spirits, who also release the Chicken Cock brand. In honor of Elvis Presley's birthday, and in light of the fact that neither of our hosts had seen a film starring The King, they decided to pair the whiskeys with Jailhouse Rock, a 1957 quasi-musical that probably marks Elvis' most iconic screen moment. To Catch A Thief / Clynelish 14
Bob and Brad dip their toes back into the Hitchcock pool with the director's 1955 effort To Catch a Thief. Made in the middle of his golden period with Paramount, this romp through the French Riviera offers lush visuals but not much in the way of a script. Thankfully, the guys get to spend their time watching the always-charming Cary Grant, in his second appearance this season. Meanwhile, they sip on Clynelish 14, the final single malt in their Coastal Collection sample pack. How will this stack up against the outstanding Talisker 10 from last week? Film & Whiskey Podcast. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 / Talisker 10
Bob and Brad spend a second week with Marvel heroes as they revisit Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, director James Gunn's (vastly superior) follow-up to the 2014 original. This movie goes so much deeper into character arcs and motivations, and to this day is the only MCU film to make Bob shed a tear. Brad was decidedly cooler on the movie the first time he saw it...will this rewatch change his mind? Meanwhile, the guys try the second whisky in their Coastal Collection sampler, Talisker 10. This single-malt has a very distinct aroma--will that bode well for its flavor? Film & Whiskey Podcast. New episodes every Monday. In one corner, Bob defends How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, an absolutely delightful animated short, while in the other, Brad vouches for the sentimental favorite in A Charlie Brown Christmas. Spider-Man (2002) / Caol Ila 12
Bob and Brad jump aboard the "timely listens" train as they revisit director Sam Raimi's 2002 hit Spider-Man on the eve of the new Marvel film featuring everyone's favorite web-slinging hero. They dive deep into both the performances (Tobey Maguire will forever be our Peter Parker) and the important historical context of the film. Meanwhile, they revisit the Islay region of Scotland to sample Caol Ila 12, a single malt that certainly brings the peaty smoke that the region is known for. Film & Whiskey Podcast. Good Night And Good Luck / Glenmorangie 18
Bob and Brad take a history lesson with director George Clooney's electrifying 2005 film Good Night, and Good Luck. Using a mix of newsreel footage, real on-air speeches, and invented dialogue, Clooney has crafted a tense and powerful movie about the price that real-life heroes pay for their actions. Meanwhile, they try the final whiskey in their Glenmorangie lineup, this time the 18-year expression. Tangled / Glenmorangie The Cadboll Estate 15
Bob and Brad watch the first animated film on the Season 5 list, Disney's 2010 effort Tangled. Both hosts are far more impressed with the movie than they expected to be, and they see a ton of influences at work here. They also spend a good bit of time comparing it to the (inferior) mega-hit Frozen. Meanwhile, they try the second whiskey in their Glenmorangie lineup, this time the 15-year Cadboll Estate expression. Made exclusively from barley grown on Glenmorangie's property, how will this, the longest-aged product our hosts have tried from the company, stack up against their other releases? Mini-sode: WTF is Turkey-Flavored Whiskey?
Bob and Brad emerge from their Thanksgiving carb-comas to review Tamworth Distillery's Bird of Courage. This starts as a five-year-aged bottled-in-bond bourbon, and then it gets infused with, seemingly, and entire cooked Thanksgiving dinner in a vacuum evaporator? We are as confused as you, but we assure you, the distillery swears this contains real, actual turkey in it.  So...why? And how does turkey whiskey taste? Film & Whiskey Podcast. Hanksgiving II: The Terminal / Glenmorangie 13 Cognac Cask Finish
Bob and Brad spend their second HANKSGIVING watching the 2004 Spielberg dramedy The Terminal. This one came from Bob's Season Five list nd both hosts agree it's an underappreciated film that really speaks to the culture and climate of America post-9/11. They spend a frankly inordinate amount of time praising Stanley Tucci and talk about the complications to the plot that arise from Catherine Zeta-Jones' character. Then, the try the first of a lineup of five whiskies from Glenmorangie, this time the 13-year scotch finished in Cognac casks. Will it live up to the gold standard of their 14-year Quinta Ruban? Pride and Prejudice / Knob Creek 12
This week, we pick a movie from Brad's Season Five list, the 2005 Joe Wright adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice. Brad's surprised to hear the Bob has never seen this movie, especially since it's been so warmly reviewed. Will the charms of Austen's prose and the famous romance at the center of the story win Bob over? Meanwhile, our hosts return to the world of bourbon to try Knob Creek 12 Year, their first in the Knob Creek brand since Season One. Bob and Brad continue the "grab-bag" of Season 5 movies with a childhood favorite of Bob's, M. Night Shyamalan's Signs. This 2002 effort seems to be well-regarded among Shyamalan's films, but Bob thinks it holds up a lit better than it gets credit for, and may actually still be his favorite of the director's movies. Meanwhile, the guys wrap up their three-week tasting of Pernderyn expressions with the peated Penderyn Celt. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 / Penderyn Madeira Finish
Bob and Brad Kick off Season 5 with another Harry Potter review, this time with 2010's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1. Director David Yates returns for this seventh chapter of the franchise, and while the movie divided audiences, Bob and brad absolutely ate it up. This film very much belongs to the layered performance of Emma Watson as Hermione, turning in what's likely a career-best. Meanwhile, they try their first of three whiskies from Penderyn, a Welsh single-malt brand. Wales was once a major player on the whiskey scene, but its production slowly died out. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King / Pappy Van Winkle 15
Bob and Brad wrap up Season 4 the same way they started it--watching a really long movie directed by Peter Jackson. This time, it's the finale of the Lord of the Rings franchise, a film that won 11 Oscars and became a worldwide phenomenon. The guys laud the performances, as well as the script, but wonder if there may be too much of a good thing going on in this 3 1/2-hour movie. Reservoir Dogs / Weller Full Proof
As we get closer to its 30th anniversary, Bob and Brad watch Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, one of the few remaining Tarantino films that Brad hasn't yet seen. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this one plays a lot differently for them as 30-year-old dads than it did as teenagers. Along the way, they talk about the film's lack of a central theme, as opposed to Tarantino's later works. Meanwhile, they continue what seems to be a Buffalo Trace marathon with W.L. Much like the '95 winner, Braveheart, the guys wonder aloud how this one holds up after a couple decades of cultural relevance. It carries an 8.5 average on IMDb, but critics like Roger Ebert awarded it only 2 stars.  Why is it so reviled by critics but beloved by the general public? Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince / Old Forester Birthday Bourbon
Bob and Brad continue their Harry Potter reviews with 2009's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Director David Yates returns for this sixth chapter of the franchise, this time to much greater success. So much success, in fact, that Bob and Brad have a legitimate debate about whether this movie should be as revered as Alfonso Cuaron's third installment. They also have a lively discussion over the pronunciation of the name "Hermione." Meanwhile, they sample Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, one of the more elusive bourbons on the market today. Once again, the series introduces a new director, this time David Yates, who helms the rest of the series. However, this first effort gets off to a bit of a rocky start. Meanwhile, they return to the Blanton's line of bourbons, which has been a hit-or-miss proposition thus far. Today, it's the collectible Blanton's Straight From the Barrel. The Royal Tenenbaums / Old Forester Single Barrel Rye
Bob and Brad are joined by Jackie Zykan, master taster at Old Forester, to review the show's first-ever film by director Wes Anderson, The Royal Tenenbaums. Bob and Jackie discussed Anderson in their first interview together, but Brad is coming into this episode as a complete novice, having never seen an Anderson film. How will the director's much-noted aesthetic work--or not work--for Brad? Was this the right movie to start with, or should Bob have chosen another Anderson film? Bob and Brad throw it back to 1952 for their review of High Noon, director Fred Zinneman's near-real-time western suspense classic. They discuss both the divisive performance and salacious Hollywood history of star Gary Cooper before praising the frequently-appearing Thomas Mitchell. In the latter part of the episode they break down the movie's role as both a metaphor of and a response to the Red Scare. Meanwhile, they finally give a proper view to New Riff Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon, a 100-proof whiskey that they fell in love with two years ago uon their first visit to the distillery. Meet Me in St. Louis / Hancock's President's Reserve
Bob introduces Brad to one of his all-time favorite films, Vincente Minnelli's 1944 musical Meet Me in St. Louis. This unconventional MGM musical isn't as big or splashy as An American in Paris or Singin' in the Rain, instead opting to follow the day-to-day life of a family over the course of one year. Judy Garland of course commands every scene she's in, but the cast here is uniformly excellent, and the camera work is some of Minnelli's best and most artistic.  Meanwhile, the guys hesitantly return to the Buffalo Trace portfolio to try Hancock's President's Reserve, a low-proof bourbon that still sells for outrageous prices on the secondary market. Bob and Brad wrap up their series of 1970s classics with the 1979 war epic Apocalypse Now. Known as much for its troubled production as for the end product, this Francis Ford Coppola film spans a number of genres, from satire to psychedelia, in its attempts to replicate the chaos of Vietnam as a backdrop to the narrative of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. North By Northwest / Thomas H Handy Sazerac Rye
Bob and Brad finish out Season 3 with an Alfred Hitchcock classic, North by Northwest. They discuss how wildly different the tone of this film is from its immediate Hitchcock predecessor, Vertigo, including in its choice of leading man. They praise the performances of Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint, and even get into a game of comparing this Grant performance to some of his other classic roles.  Meanwhile, they sip one of their most challenging whiskeys to evaluate: Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye, a member of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. This might be the best whiskey ever featured on the show, but it is undoubtedly also the most cost-prohibitive. How can they reconcile these two facts? Film & Whiskey Podcast. New episodes every Monday. Sicario / Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Bob and Brad take a look at director Denis Villeneuve's 2015 effort Sicario. In a lot of ways, this film is reminiscent of another movie they've recently watched, No Country For Old Men, not least of which is master cinematographer Roger Deakins. The guys discuss the uniformly excellent performances, especially Benicio Del Toro. Meanwhile, they dip their toes back into the Wild Turkey pool with the barrel-proof Rare Breed bourbon. At only about a $40 price tag, will this end up being one of the best values of the season? Film & Whiskey Podcast. New episodes every Monday. East of Eden / Tin Cup American Whiskey
Bob and Brad watch East of Eden, the screen debut of Hollywood legend James Dean and an adaptation of one of Brad's all-time favorite novels. Return of the Jedi / Early Times Bottled-in-Bond
Bob and Brad finish out the original Star Wars trilogy in style with 1983's Return of the Jedi. Brad outright admits he cannot objectively talk about Star Wars, but the guys still acknowledge some pacing issues in this one. Meanwhile, they sample a budget bourbon in Early Times Bottled-in-Bond. It's a Wonderful Life / A Midwinter Night's Dram
Christmastime is here, and Bob and Brad are ready to talk about their favorite Christmas movie, It's a Wonderful Life. Perhaps their biggest mission in the episode is to ding the praises of Donna Reed, who is just absolutely spectacular alongside an always-stellar James Stewart. Even though they both love the film, our hosts discuss whether it could be improved upon and whether a movie can be a "10/10" while being imperfect. Bob is joined by the master distillers at Woodford Reserve, Chris Morris and Elizabeth McCall, to discuss the new release from their Master's Collection, the Very Fine Rare Bourbon. This blend of barrels includes the oldest whiskey ever released by Woodford Reserve: 17-year-old bourbon, distilled in 2003, Morris' first year as Master Distiller. Mary Poppins / Port Charlotte 10 Year
Bob and Brad review the family classic Mary Poppins. Bob talks about his long, complicated relationship with the movie, while it's Brad's first time seeing it in many years. They hit all the main points, including Julie Andrews' incredible performance, Dick van Dyke's accent, and the inevitable comparisons to The Sound of Music. But Bob also gives lots of love to David Tomlinson, his favorite actor in the film. Meanwhile, they try their first whisky from the Bruichladdich distillery, the Port Charlotte Heavily Peated 10-Year. How will Bob, who notoriously dislikes heavy peat, react to this one?
