Ep. 27- A Moment Like This: An Interview with Caroline Stroud from @carolinestroudart

Welcome back to Finance Fundamentals. This is the interview series, "The Business of Business."

Today's guest is Caroline Stroud.

Caroline was born and raised in Macon, Georgia and earned a business and studio art degree from the University of Georgia.  She now paints at her studio in Decatur during the week and travels around the Southeast painting live wedding paintings most weekends.

Caroline's fine art subject matter is largely influenced by observing wedding guests interact while doing live wedding paintings. Watching guests meet, connect and part ways all in one night inspired her to paint these interactions while adding her own whimsical twist.  Her work is continually inspired by the weddings she attends but has evolved into a larger narrative of turning the mundane into happy moments to be appreciated- seeing the beauty in everything even if it is not immediately apparent.

Sprawling line work, bright colors and the juxtaposition of 2D and 3D elements are the defining characteristics of her work.  Each piece is the perfect combination of untamed and perfectly planned out.

Follow Caroline at:

Ep. 26- New Ring who Dis?: An Interview with Lindsay Appleby from @twocatsandabrush

Ep. 26- New Ring who Dis?: An Interview with Lindsay Appleby from @twocatsandabrush

Welcome back to Finance Fundamentals. This is the interview series, "The Business of Business."

Today's guest is Lindsay Appleby, the owner of the Boston based company Two Cats and. Brush, LLC. She that paints engagement rings and other wedding pieces in watercolor. Two Cats and a Brush was started in 2017 and has grown exponentially since.

Two Cats and a Brush started on a whim in 2017 when Lindsay Appleby painted pet portraits as Christmas presents for family members. Since then, it has taken off! She spent the first few years solely painting pets and eventually opened an Etsy page. In August 2019, Lindsay got engaged and painted her own ring in watercolor for fun. She enjoyed the process so much that she began painting friends’ rings as gifts, and from there the ring paintings became the most popular part of her business! Ep. 25- Husslin' and Bustlin': An Interview with Ryan Roberts, founder and CEO of @bustld

Ep. 25- Husslin' and Bustlin': An Interview with Ryan Roberts, founder and CEO of @bustld

Welcome back to Finance Fundamentals. This is the interview series, "The Business of Business."

Today's guests is Ryan Roberts.

Starting a business always felt like it was in the cards for Ryan. Watching his grandmother start her company at the age of 50, paired with his passion for building, solving problems and side hustles fueled him since he was young.

After graduation, he packed up and moved to New York City to pursue his career at esteemed corporations including UBS, Thomson Reuters and Dun & Bradstreet. He was repeatedly promoted into new roles based on demonstrated success in executing strategy, optimizing revenue, and leading organizations through critical transitions. He has proven success in sales, account management, business development, and strategic planning.

Today, he is the co-founder and CEO at
Bustld.com, a wedding technology startup based in Charlotte, NC. His big picture vision, contagious energy and passion for solving any problem has enabled him to grow the company from pre-launch sales through a pandemic, and beyond. His insight enabled Bustld to pivot and launch LoveStream.io 6 weeks after COVID restrictions shut down weddings worldwide, and bring the company out on the other side with an even better vision for its future.

In his free time, he loves watching Alabama football, drinking Italian wine and being with his family.

Startup founders and leaders he most admires: Nick Saban, Steve Jobs, Gary Vaynerchuk, Barbara Corcoran

Bustld was developed to be an all-encompassing digital wedding platform that fills in the gaps that currently exist in the industry.

The platform utilizes a matching algorithm to match couples to wedding vendors, based on fit, not who pays the most — like a dating app for finding your perfect wedding vendors!

In his role as CEO, he oversees:

  • Company growth through increasing monthly sales & strategic partnerships
  • Vision for company growth
  • Team onboarding

Ep. 21- Estates: An Interview with Lisa Landry form Landry Law

Ep. 21- Estates: An Interview with Lisa Landry form Landry Law

Welcome back to Finance Fundamentals.  This is the interview series, "The Business of Business."

Today's guest is Lisa Landry.

Lisa Ann Landry is an attorney admitted to practice in MA and RI serving clients all around the world. Her practice, Landry Law, PLLC (landrylawpractice.com), focuses on trusts & estates, tax, and business law and making these complex areas approachable in a comfortable and educated manner for people. Separately, Lisa Ann provides tax planning and preparation for individuals, businesses, and fiduciaries at Hastings & Landry CPA PC.

Follow Lisa and Landry Law:

In all three of Landry Law’s practice areas, even though everyone will interact with them in some way during their lives, most people feel uncomfortable, intimidated, and overwhelmed, without adequate information to make decisions.  That is why Lisa Ann has structured Landry Law in a way to be more approachable, including free educational work to help people become more comfortable. At the core of the practice are the following:
(1) being proactive to protect clients
(2) while being guided by clients’ goals
(3) in designing and implementing cohesive individualized planning and
(4) providing education in a comfortable manner.

Many people do not realize that they need to start estate planning early, and a large number of young professionals who should start their plans, which will evolve with them, have nothing in place yet. Oftentimes, this gap is felt when the young professional falls ill, becomes incapacitated (most common), or even dies unexpectedly.

Landry Law’s trusts and estates practice includes estate planning, probate administration, and trust administration. Lisa Ann’s experience allows her to work in a variety of simple and complex areas for individualized planning with the client’s goals guiding the plan design. Complex areas in which Lisa Ann has experience and interest include nontraditional families and households, single, minors (children), childfree, divorce, international, charitable, high net worth, and special needs planning. Often, people do not know how to assess the level of complication of their own needs in the unfamiliar areas of law, and Lisa Ann is able to distill the information to what is important to the client.

Landry Law’s business law practice includes business formation, business planning, and both emergency and long-term business succession planning.

The tax law practice underlies the other two as well as providing separate guidance and tax planning to clients as appropriate.

Prior to starting Landry Law, Lisa Ann worked at two mid-sized firms in the Greater Boston Area. Prior to becoming an attorney, Lisa Ann worked in a variety of legal environments.

Lisa Ann is a graduate of Boston University School of Law (J.D., cum laude, 2015) and Bentley University (B.S. in Management with High Distinction and in LSM: Ethics and Social Responsibility with Minor in Law, magna cum laude, 2012). During law school, Lisa Ann worked and joined organizations to continue learning about these practice areas and studied in an international law program at Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany.

Ep. 16- The Time Value of Money

Ep. 16- The Time Value of Money

A dollar today is not the same as a dollar tomorrow. Even without external factors such as inflation, our money is worth more to us upfront, assuming we use it to invest wisely and enjoy watching the interest grow. Time Value of Money is an important financial concept. The concept is drawn from the idea that investors prefer money today rather than some in the future because of the potential of growth over time.

Special shoutout to listener Chapin S. for sending in the idea for this episode. We appreciate the support. I love feedback, comments, and questions and will be incorporating those into my future episodes. Please consider sharing this show with a friend or colleague. Every little bit you can learn helps you save money and better understand where your money is going.

Take 20 minutes out of your week to listen to these podcasts, and you won't regret it! Please consider leaving a review on Apple Podcasts. It helps others find the show and see your thoughts.

See a time value of money calculator from MSN: https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/tools/timevalueofmoney

See show calculations below:

FV = PV x [ 1 + (i / n) ] (n x t)

  • FV = Future value of money
  • PV = Present value of money
  • i = interest rate
  • n = number of compounding periods per year
  • t = number of years

Assume you invest $10,000 for one year at 10% interest. The future value of that money is:

FV = $10,000 x [1 + (10% / 1)] ^ (1 x 1) = $11,000

Let's rearrange the formula to find the value of that future sum in dollars today.

$5,000 one year from today, at 7% compounded interest is:

PV = $5,000 / [1 + (7% / 1)] ^ (1 x 1) = $4,673

Now check out the effects of compounding:

  • Quarterly Compounding: FV = $10,000 x [1 + (10% / 4)] ^ (4 x 1) = $11,038
  • Monthly Compounding: FV = $10,000 x [1 + (10% / 12)] ^ (12 x 1) = $11,047
  • Daily Compounding: FV = $10,000 x [1 + (10% / 365)] ^ (365 x 1) = $11,052

PV= FV/(1+r) where r is the interest rate.

Earlier this year Anna Forte, The Spritz Project's founder, left her job in corporate working for a tech company to take The Spritz Project full time because she believed,  especially after the hardships so many small businesses experienced throughout 2020, in the importance of small businesses putting their best foot forward.

As a Type A planner, Anna was committed to setting herself and her business up "the right way" from the very beginning, but as so many know even the most well-intentioned plans don't guarantee a seamless road. She'll be talking to us all about her journey to get to this point.

Ep. 9- The Student Debt Crisis

Ep. 9- The Student Debt Crisis

When we set our sights on our dream college, student loans are something we so quickly agree to, but 17 and 18 year old "adults" don't understand the debt they are taking on or the ramifications of living out of their means. Maybe you have debt and it is too late. Let's chat about some tools and strategies you can utilize to better understand your student loans and pay them off more quickly, as well as some history behind where student loans originated and the crisis it has created in the United States.

If you need some student loan payoff calculators, I like:

Ep. 8- An Interview with @jimtselikis from @cousinsmainelobster

Ep. 8- An Interview with @jimtselikis from @cousinsmainelobster

Welcome back to Finance Fundamentals. This is a new take on the series. Every Thursday I will be releasing an interview. This is "The Business of Business."

My first guest is a fellow Maine native who's grown an idea into an empire, and I am incredibly excited to share this interview with all of you. Check out Food Truck Rehab on Sunday evenings at 11PM EST/8PM PST to see the cousins in action as they save and rehabilitate food truck businesses across the country.

Jim's Bio: Cape Elizabeth, Maine native Jim Tselikis is the co-founder of Cousins Maine Lobster, a startup food truck business which has grown to over 50 units, including both gourmet food trucks and fast-casual restaurants. Jim graduated from College of the Holy Cross in 2008 with a degree in Political Science. In 2012 he and his cousin, Sabin Lomac, opened a single food truck in Los Angeles, looking to bring the authentic Maine lobster experience from their childhood to the West Coast.

After an endearing 2012 Shark Tank appearance that culminated in a partnership with Barbara Corcoran,  the Cousins began franchising, bringing authentic Maine Lobster eats to unique neighborhoods across the U.S. and, in 2017, expanded internationally into Taiwan. Jim continues to work tirelessly to grow his "Family First" business with an eye towards sustainability in order to bring the CML experience to customers nationwide and beyond. An accomplished entrepreneur and author, Jim is an active member of Big Brothers Big Sisters and is a proud father to his daughter, Olive, and devoted husband to his wife, Maggie.

Ep. 4- The Power of Compounding & Why Your Savings Account Sucks

Ep. 4- The Power of Compounding & Why Your Savings Account Sucks

Not all investments grow the same. Not all debts grow the same. Do you know the difference between simple v. compounding interest? It is an important tool when you are an investor, since your principal will grow. You earn interest on your original investment and the interest that follows. With debts, the same policy applies, but this time, working against you. Minimum payments are for the birds.

Join me this week as we briefly discuss the basics of simple and compounding interest and how to better understand your investments and debts.

The Rule of 72: (72/Interest Rate)= Number of Years for the Investment to Double

True Compound Interest Calculator: https://www.investor.gov/financial-tools-calculators/calculators/compound-interest-calculator

Simple Interest: P x r x n

Compounding Interest: P x (1+(r/n)) ^tn

  • P= Principal
  • r= Rate
  • n= The amount of times the investment is compounded per year
  • t= Time

Ep. 2- Retirement Savings & Investment Vehicles

Ep. 2- Retirement Savings & Investment Vehicles

Saving for retirement may sound daunting, but we should understand the investment vehicles that will help us to succeed. The most powerful tools available to most of us are 401(k)'s and IRA's. Maybe you've heard about Roth 401(k)'s and Roth IRA's as well. Don't worry, we will discuss all of those today in Episode 2- Retirement Savings & Investment Vehicles. Some bonus content for this episode is the inclusion of 529 Plans and HSA's and FSA's. It is tempting to have that extra money in your paycheck today, but then you lose out of years of growth potential and upside! The last thing you want is to work your entire adult life and then have to stress about money. The more you learn to appropriately save and diversify today, the better you will be in the long run.
