Your Home 2000 Years Ago: Was It That Different? A Minisode Featuring The Take One Podcast
Scott had the good fortune to appear as a guest on the daily podcast Take One: Talmud To Go, with host Liel Leibovitz. Scott and Liel wrestle with an odd passage in the Talmud that asks: Which part of the house must you show when someone is looking to buy it? Was real estate 2000 years ago that different than it is today?
This is a minisode, as Take One's episodes are quite short! Enjoy!

Home as a Refugee: A Conversation with Oscar Award-Winning Filmmaker, Megan Mylan
Boy, am I excited to share with you all this week’s episode of Finding Home. (and that’s an understatement).
I was lucky to get to talk with Megan Mylan, who is an Oscar-winning documentary film director. You might be familiar with her current documentary, Simple as Water, or her excellent Lost Boys of Sudan - or Oscar-winner Smile Pinki.
Megan’s films aren’t a casual watch - they delicately unravel the more difficult parts of life: separation, displacement, family struggle, and the impacts of war.
In her most recent film, Simple as As Water, Megan paints an intimate portrait of the impact of war, separation, and displacement of Syrian families. It’s a tough but an urgent and timeless portrait. The film is much more than just a conversation about the devastation of war. It’s about the steadfast power of parental love.
Proud to share this conversation with you all. I hope you enjoy. And if you haven’t already, watch Simple As Water on HBO.

Breaking Bad in Residential Real Estate Marketing: A Minisode on Misused Words and Phrases
“You keep using that word. I do not think that means what you think it means.”
What exactly does “river view” mean? What does “central air conditioning” mean?
How can you build trust when words aren’t always used properly in the real estate market?
Today, my fellow co-worker at the Harris Residential Team, Jonathan, “Yoni” Goldstein and I talk about, and discuss solutions to misused language in real estate marketing. Yoni and I get a bit, “nerdy” if you will - and we dive deeply into the intersection between language and finding “home”.
Growing up in Westchester County, Jonathan is no stranger to New York City - and his personal and career expertise shines in our conversation today. Jonathan joined The Harris Residential Team after a successful 10-year career working for L+M Development Partners. Jonathan played a key role in the pre-development, construction, preservation, and development of over 6,000 residential units across New York City. He has lived in many Manhattan neighborhoods over the past decade, and currently resides in Murray Hill.

Being Home in Fatherhood: A Conversation with Dr. Michael Madden
As a parent, do you ever sometimes wish somebody could magically appear in your ear and tell you all the answers?
I know I do.
Today I sit down with the thoughtful, introspective, ever-so-positive, Dr. Michael Madden, who is also a fellow father, a facilitator of outdoor trips into the wilderness, and has witnessed the healing powers of psychedelics. We talk through some of these deeper questions all us parents have.
We also talk about what it’s like being a child of divorce, the power of nature in healing interpersonal relationships, the deeper, less-discussed challenges of fatherhood, and the power of the wilderness and nature.
Especially if you are somebody living in a place as urban as New York City, like myself, this conversation about nature is more important than ever.

Creating Home One Chapter At A Time: Featuring NYT Bestselling Author & Entrepreneur, Seth Siegel
Everyone talks about the power of mentors. What counts as a mentor?
A Football coach? A teacher who believed in you? Your first boss? Your supportive father-in-law?
Mentors come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they come in the shape of a book. That is, what if your best mentors aren't flesh and blood? What if you could find the support and wisdom you needed from long-dead poets, philosophers, and statesmen?
We know that everyone needs mentors. Almost as much as we need water. In this week's episode of Finding Home, we talk about both- the importance of clean water and the power of mentors- with New York Times Best-selling Author Seth Siegel, who is also an activist, entrepreneur- and my long-time mentor. His first book, Let There Be Water, tackled the history of water technology in Israel. His second, Troubled Water, focused on water policy in America.
But this is but the latest chapter in Siegel's fascinating personal and business life. With multiple businesses across multiple industries, we look to ask some relevant questions in the era of the Great Resignation: How do you know when it's time to change careers? How do you take that leap? How important are mentors? How do you have the confidence to try new things?
Enjoy this week's Finding Home and find some answers to these questions!

Now imagine doing this without visuals. This week’s episode is a special one - and you aren’t going to want to miss it. This week’s episode is all about storytelling, and how our voices can be a powerful medium of connection, community, and our diverse mosaic of adventures. He has recorded over 400 audiobooks, from classics by Tolstoy, Walt Whitman and Jack London, to modern best sellers by Amor Towles, James Patterson, and David Baldacci.
You might have caught his profile in the New York Times, which called him, appropriately, "The Voice of God." On screen he is best known for his work in "The Sopranos" and the indie hit "Dinner Rush." He is currently filming the new Hulu series "Retreat," due out in 2023.
We talk about stories at bedtime, accents, whether it’s more fun to read fiction or non-fiction and how it’s different, how recording the bible affected the way he thought about religion, the variety of accents he grew up with, how he went from screen actor to voice narrator and back, and how reading so much incredible literature changed him and inspired him to write an audible original story with Jess Walter called ‘The Angel of Rome.” I hope you enjoy my conversation with Edoardo Ballerini!

The Minisode: The Myths of Million Dollar Listing, Featuring Harris Residential Team Member, Chloe Chasanoff
After falling in love with New York City real estate on Bravo, Chloe Chasanoff, another member of the Harris Residential Team, was determined to be in the industry. However, Chloe learned that the real estate industry is not all expensive lunches at Nobu and travel by jet. Oftentimes, it is less glamorous - it is heavy lifting furniture, compiling board packages, and the like. Today’s episode, Chloe and I are here as your myth busters. We debunk the common misconceptions of working in real estate, look at how deals actually get made, and some stories of how we put our deals together for our clients.
Chloe grew up in a Real Estate family, surrounded by real estate developers and investors in the New York area for more than 60 years. A passion and drive for Real Estate emerged, along with an innate ability to help buyers find their next home. From a young age, Chloe was intrigued by the lifestyle of real estate agents. In 2019, she joined the Harris Residential Team and has been a broker with us ever since.

Leadership begins with Leading Yourself: Featuring VSA Consulting Group Co-Founder & Status Quo Breaker, Tony Smith
What does “leader” actually mean? Is it charisma? Is it skill? Or is it something else?
Tony Smith, cofounder of VSA Consulting Group asks himself this question every day. But, despite popular belief, Tony reveals that things like “charisma” or “skill” or “personality” are attributes of a leader, but not what makes a leader, a leader. Rather, Tony describes leadership as being much more. It’s about inspiring the future.
This week Tony and I discussed an important, but an often overlooked thing - transformational leadership. Since 1985, Tony has been advocating, practicing, and coaching transformational leadership, which empowers the performance of corporate CEOs, executives, public leaders, and entrepreneurs to reach business success that exceeds any reasonable expectation.
Tony’s leadership coaching was beneficially influenced by and draws upon the work of Werner Erhard, Michael Jensen, Jeri Echevarria and Steve Zaffron through a online course called Being a Leader: The Effective Exercise of Leadership which can be found online under: Being a Leader, Werner Erhard, SSRN (Social Science Research Network).

This is a question Jordan Zucker asked herself before writing her personable, funny, creative book, “One Dish: Four Seasons”. We spend most of today talking about her latest book, a cookbook called One Dish: Four Seasons, and we get all into it.

Heroes Need Help, Too: Featuring Trauma Psychologist Dr. Alana Siegel
I’ve heard from therapists that this could be the GOLDEN AGE of therapy. Across the globe, we’ve all had two years to come to grips with not only what’s been going on around the world, but what’s been going on inside us. And we need some help finding our way back home. I had a chance to catch up with brilliant psychologist and trauma specialist, and my cousin, Dr. Alana Siegel. Alana completed her undergraduate degree at Cornell University. She then earned her doctorate in Clinical and School Child Psychology at Yeshiva University. Fun fact, for those who have been here before, you’ll recognize Alana from my very first episode of Finding Home, on the “Power to Process”.
We’ll discuss everything there is to know about creating safe spaces, processing the impact of Covid-19. We also talk about the similarities in experience, and the differences, between soldiers and doctors, in the US and in Israel, where Alana is based. We speak about the universal fear we experience of losing a loved one, and so much more. We talk about Alana’s background, her path into trauma psychology, and her vital discovery that “the external stress of Covid-19 led us, led people to cohere, to come closer together”.
Conversations like this one, especially when we are talking about our more difficult times as humans, but Alana’s research is a reminder that, in the hardest of times, human beings get through it, together.

The Power of Making It Personal: Featuring CEO of Audience.co, Jesse Stein
Home is certainly much more than longitude and latitude.
For Jesse Stein, the founder and CEO of Audience.co, learning to appreciate home meant pulling his three kids out of school and traveling to dozens of countries in a year / That certainly creates a different sense of home. And it creates a lot of possible postcards to send to the people you love. and a lot to bring back in terms of what you've learned. Love can come through things as simple as a handwritten note.
Jesse built his business around sending notes like this. But here, you're not sending them to people you necessarily know, but sharing what you know in a new, old way.
Who doesn't like a handwritten note? We've come back to the old school, where their notes get a 90% read rate and 6X the response of normal direct mail. As we all experienced during the pandemic, feeling connected to one another online can be difficult - but people like Jesse are a testament to our ability to feel close to one another, through things as simple as a handwritten note to your clients. It’s a great reminder to keep it personal, and not transactional. And a great reminder that meaningful connections create good business. Clients are people first. We discuss how home can be made with a father halfway across the country and grandparents across the street. How it really does take a village to raise kids, and how important it is to have time and space to think and consider how to take your life to a new level. If a home can help you do that, it's doing its job!
It’s a great conversation, and there’s so much we can learn from Jesse about how to feel closer to one another, and the importance of creating a personable relationship with your clients. I hope you enjoy it.

Food as Home and Home as Food: Featuring Challah Instructor, Cook, & Food Philosopher Rachel Ringler
Nothing turns a house more quickly into a home than food. The smells and the tastes can instantly transport you back to a particular time and place. With the Jewish holiday of Purim rapidly approaching, this episode is particularly great. We have with us food writer Rachel Ringler, who is helping us discover amazing Jewish foods both in and out of New York City. Rachel Ringler is a museum docent, challah instructor and cook who has strong feelings about the important role food plays in life, in family, and in community. You might know her from her myriad of food-think pieces she has written for The Foward and Mudrack. She gracefully reminds us that food is not just a biological necessity, but a vital philosophy that can transform our lives, our relationships, and our communities.
We talk about everything from why Israeli food is finally getting the spotlight, to why we forget about the power of a meal and a nap, and to how she came to be in the kitchen of a famous Israeli hotel baking challah for over 200 people.
Come join us for an intimate conversation about the power of food as more than just necessary physical nourishment, but a stronghold for our spiritual and emotional needs as well. Today, Rachel and I dynamically reach an important truth of life: Food is Home. And Home is Food.

Dreaming of Food & The Future of New York: Restauranteur Robert Guarino
It’s no secret that March of 2020 was incredibly difficult on all of us - but especially our service industry. Upon closing, restaurant owners were forced to make hard, unprecedented decisions about the businesses they had spent years cultivating.
However, Robert Guarino, CEO of 5 Napkin Burger in Hell's Kitchen says otherwise. Now more than ever, food is a beacon of light for New York City, a common ground where we can: release the tension of the past couple of years, but more deeply, fulfill our deeper human desire to connect with one another.
Robert has over 20 years of experience creating, building, and operating next-level restaurant concepts. Throughout his career, he has maintained a focus on restaurants rooted in casual fine dining with a strong emphasis on design, food, beverage, and enlightened service.
In 2001 he joined Simon Oren to open the French Mediterranean Brasserie Marseille in Hell’s Kitchen. Marseille quickly earned a “2 Star” review in The New York Times, and continues to thrive to this day. In the years that followed, Chef Andy would join the team and together with Oren they would open the Upper West Side’s Nice Matin in 2003 and Hell’s Kitchen’s Nizza in 2007. The trio’s next creation, 5 Napkin Burger, created a new dining phenomenon by using the burger as the starting point for their brand while surrounding it with all the trappings of a true American brasserie. In the 2013 edition of Zagat, 5 Napkin was voted as the 12th most popular restaurant in NYC, and in 2013 Nation’s Restaurant News featured 5 Napkin in its top 50 Breakout Brands Issue. Additionally, Robert is the Managing Partner of New York City brands Playa Betty’s and Schmackarys.
Listen to a sentimentally-hopeful conversation about farm-to-table Italian cuisine, cooking with family, restaurant service as an inspiring career, and food as the emulsion that brings us all together.

One Run Can Change your Life: Featuring Coach, & Boston Marathon Rooftop Runner, Stephen England
This week, I’m honored to feature Stephen England on this week’s episode of Finding Home!
You might know Stephen England as the Boston Marathon Rooftop Runner. When the Boston Marathon was postponed due to Covid-19, instead of taking the day off, Stephen ran the Boston Marathon by jogging his Manhattan apartment building more than 1,000 times. Overnight, media outlets across the United States were inspired by Stephen’s commitment to public safety - and to running the race he signed up for.
Stephen England, from the UK, has been calling NYC home for over 16 years. While his profession of high-end residential general contracting with Capital Craftsmen is impressive, his personal story, his side hustle of running is where all the magic comes from. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 14 but has refused to let that stop him from pursuing his dreams of becoming a runner.
To date, he has run 99 marathons and ultramarathons around the world including the Boston Marathon several times, Leadville 100, Western States 100, UTMB, a multi-stage race alongside his wife Tiffany in the Himalayas as well as 3 very different 200+ mile races, which he refers to as adventures in Tahoe, Arizona and most proudly most fondly, the Tor des Geants, a 205 mile tour in the Italian Alps with over 80,000 feet of elevation gain and loss and very little sleep completed in just under 5 days.
In the height of Covid-19 lockdown, Stephen was determined to not only still run the 2020 canceled Boston Marathon but do so with the message of stay home and stay safe. By running over 1000 laps of his Harlem apartment roof, the Rooftop Marathon was born, and his heartwarming inspirational story went viral around the world.
Stephen is also an official pacer for the NYC Marathon as well as a running coach at Patagonia. He passionately dives into some of these stories of his running endeavors, living with type 1 diabetes and what it means to him to be a role model to the next 14-year-old who gets diagnosed with diabetes who feels lost and heartbroken.
Stephen's motto in life is "I run diabetes, diabetes does not run me."
Tune into a powerful conversation about overcoming adversity, the healing powers of running, and the human resolve.

Making More Room for Bikes, Less Room for Cars in NYC: Featuring Doug Gordon of The War on Cars
We're delighted to bring Doug Gordon to the podcast, who has been one of the most outspoken and well-spoken advocates for turning New York and other cities into safe meccas for alternative transportation. At a time when New York City is experimenting quite incredibly and effectively with outdoor dining that has eaten lots of car parking, and as bike lanes have become ubiquitous throughout the five boroughs, this conversation is as timely as it ever will be. Will cars and bikes ever get along? We sure hope so!

New York Is Funny: Featuring Zarna Garg
Zarna Garg has had over 10 million views of her hilarious TikTok videos. As a New York-based comedian, Garg makes us laugh, her humor rooted in what she knows, life as an Indian-American, transplanted to Manhattan. Her clean humor is as refreshing as it is ridiculous! Scott had the chance to talk about Garg's experience with real estate, her fantasies of moving to NJ- and how they were dashed! Many thanks to Zarna Garg for making time to make our audience laugh!
