Episode #50 Alan Patricof, founder of Greycroft, Apax & Primetime Partners and Abby Levy on Fireside with a VC
Episode #50 Alan Patricof, founder of Greycroft, Apax & Primetime Partners and Abby Levy on Fireside with a VC
Episode #50 Alan Patricof, godfather of the VC and PE industries, he’s 87 years old now, and founded legendary VC firm Greycroft and seminal PE firm Apax. Alan founded VC fund Patricof Company Ventures with a $2.5m fund in 1969. · Greycroft has over $2bn of AUM with a reputation trying to keep things from getting too big and follow the path of Apax which has AUM of over $60bn. Their last fund I believe closed in January of 2021 at it’s hard cap of $11bn. · Alan rather than just add more zeros to Apax, which I think stands for Alan’s initials Alan Patricof Associates Cross-Border, Alan moved on from Apax to found Greycroft. Proving his passion for investing early Greycroft raised its first fund (Greycroft I) with $75 million. Some of Alan’s investments include Steve Job’s Apple Computer, AOL, Xerox, New York Magazine, HuffPost, Audible, Axios, Venmo, Goop, Crafy which we invested in before Greycroft and alongside Greycroft a few weeks ago, Office Depot, and many others. · Now Alan has teamed up with Abby Miller Levy to launch a new VC fund Primetime Partners focused on funding early stage companies that can transform the quality of living for older adults. At 87 Alan may have some insight and opinions there. · Alan has also written a book I purchased on pre-order No Red Lights: Reflections on Life, 50 Years in Venture Capital, and Never Driving Alone. · Abby is a Princeton and Harvard graduate, began her career at McKinsey, more recently was the Founding President alongside CEO Arianna Huffington at Thrive Global, a behavior change technology company focused on employee productivity and wellness and worked in new ventures at SoulCycle. · Discussing how VC funds have become too large in size resulting in over funding companies and failing to make venture returns. · Discussing what’s changed in 50 years? More people want to start their own business now compared to far fewer 50 years ago. · Deep dive on Primetime Partners strategy with a focus on healthcare IT and fintech and the growing elderly market, which control two thirds of the world’s wealth. Primetime also backs founders that start companies over the age of 50. · Talking about current strategy at Greycroft seeking to invest in companies that can be valued at over $10bn. · Primetime in contrast is seeking to invest smaller checks, out of a smaller fund and more realistic exit valuations. · Exit return targets for Primetime compared to Greycroft and reaching 3x returns fund-wide. Qualifications for Qualified Small Business Stock (QSBS) tax exemptions. The small business must have assets of less than $50m on the balance sheet (not valuation) at the time of the investment including the size of the round, must hold the stock for at least 5 years or roll or tack the exit gain into another QSBS qualifying investment within 60 days and hold for a total combined 5 years. How to gift some of your QSBS stock to trusts which can each get up to $10m+ from a single QSBS stock gain distributed to multiple trusts. Advice and recommendations on not being too overzealous with the QSBS programs and gifting strategies. How the federal Build, Back Better Infrastructure Plan may remove QSBS to free up more revenue to pay for the Infrastructure Plan and how that may stymie job growth, lost payroll tax and the multiplier effect of this program. Episode #39 Brian Cohen, General Partner, New York Venture Partners, Chairman Emeritus, New York Angels, legendary angel investor in Pinterest, Comixology, actively making 3 new investments per week, 100+ and NYVP. Advice to founders on how to raise angel and VC funding, make an emotional and personal connection with the angel, smile a lot, be funny, have breakfast, lunch and dinner with each company before investing, likes startups that understand the customer better than they understand themselves. All startups pivot, iteration is the new innovation, why taking too much capital too early is a huge mistake. I’m not in the investment business; I’m in the exit business. Must see a 20x return to buy into a current valuation and invest. A million reasons why to never invest in SAFEs. SAFEs do not get QSBS tax treatment. Rob is also a General Partner at X-Seed Capital and Venture Partner at Piva Capital. In THE BRAINS AND BRAWN COMPANY, Siegel demonstrates how companies that bridge the digital and physical domains will have an advantage in coming years – just as Amazon has proven. Siegel provides a framework for ten key attributes companies must master—five each for the digital and physical realms—arguing that digital and physical excellence reinforce each other, achieving more in coordination than either can on their own. 1. Brain/The Left Hemisphere: Using Analytics 2. Brain/The Right Hemisphere: Harnessing Creativity 3. Brain/The Amygdala: Tapping the Power of Empathy 4. Brain/The Prefrontal Cortex: Managing Risk 5. Brain/The Inner Ear: Balancing Ownership and Partnership 6. Brawn/The Spine: Logistics 7. Brawn/Hands: The Craft of Making Things 8. Brawn/Muscles: Leveraging Size and Scale 9. Brawn/Hand-Eye Coordination: Managing Ecosystems 10. Brawn/Stamina: Surviving for the Long Run Siegel illustrates each with case studies—many based on CEO visits to his “Industrialist’s Dilemma” class or in-depth research and case studies, providing readers the feel of an all-access pass to several of the most popular courses at the Stanford GSB. From 23andMe, Instacart and Google to Kaiser Permanente, Desktop Metal, and Michelin, the examples demonstrate how to combine the best of both digital and physical attributes to grow a company. And Siegel shows leaders how to put the framework into action by becoming Systems Leaders, skilled at blending the best of digital and physical, recognizing emerging patterns, and making key decisions in a rapidly changing landscape. video: https://youtu.be/f61n3-5MQrc Please use this link to invest in our VC fund on Angel List: https://angel.co/lead/sevenbc/lp-network/invite.
