This week we chatted to Tom Skyrme from Affinity Spaces, who came to reveal how you can build outstanding fitness experiences for your clients. Affinity Active Spaces are looking to answer three vital questions that will change the state of health & fitness delivery.

  • What does health truly mean and how can we work to advance it holistically?
  • How do we create desirable spaces to evolve health at scale now and into the future?
  • What makes health development meaningful and accessible to everyone?

Affinity's mission is to fundamentally change the way health is perceived through the creation of active spaces. Active spaces are not a type of facility such as a health club, big box or boutique, nor is it a franchise or workout. It is an ideology, the next evolution to the gym as we know it.

They are a company dedicated to supporting the dynamic and holistic health problems of the modern world. Tackling inactivity, obesity, mental health and social health with strategies that resonate most with the consumer to build lasting commitment to health.

Our main topics of discussion:

  • Getting online more effectively
  • Building experiences that retain members
  • Why organisations should adopt a ‘Space Station’ model (and what that means)

S2E16: David Minton on ageism, data and politics in the fitness industry

S2E16: David Minton on ageism, data and politics in the fitness industry

We spoke to David Minton, who is the founder and director of The Leisure Database Company, and a true legend within the industry. David's view is that fitness was a data poor industry and we'll discuss how that led to us being totally underprepared for the crisis that hit last year. Wel also chat about how important it will be for the nation to start thinking about exercise as a form of self care for life - notably because over 75% of people who died from COVID were over 70...but only 1% of those people have a health club membership. Time for change! David talks to us about how he sees the road back to normal, as well as the role of politics within fitness, and if the industry really is ageist.

David is well known for his unique industry knowledge and is in demand for his expert

media commentary and public speaking. Helping businesses and individuals with the invaluable intelligence needed to make key decisions, David leads them through analysis into action, achievement and competitive advantage.  He also works with leading journalists and publications to spark debate within and create support for the leisure, fitness, consultancy and financial industries and is the recognised go-to for market trends, data and insight.
