Interview with Scottie B. Cards on Undervalued Baseball Cards, Selling Prospects, and Creating Content for 10K YouTube Subscribers; Hyung's Experience Submitting to SGC and FCG
EPISODE 35 - Scott Baldwin, aka Scottie B. Cards on both YouTube and Instagram, joined Clark, Hyung and John for this podcast episode to share his wealth of knowledge on baseball and how that might impact baseball card prices. They specifically go over which players seem to be undervalued, talk about investing in prospects, and how to build a successful YouTube sports card channel. Plus he weighs in on whether the Wander Franco Bowman's Best card is his true flagship rookie card as well as his thoughts on Fanatics buying out Topps. But off the top of the episode Hyung shares his recent experience submitting cards in bulk to SGC and FCG (Forensic Card Grading) for grading. The guys end the show with the regular edition of Pick One where they debate which cards they would rather invest in. This week's Pick One pairs are: Mookie Betts Bowman Chrome 1st Autograph Card vs. Bo Bichette Bowman Chrome 1st Autograph Card; Which is more lucrative? Investing in prospects or invest in rookies after their first or second year; Luka Doncic Panini Prizm Silver (PSA 10) vs. Luka Doncic Optic Holo (PSA 10). Is Wander Franco's Flagship Rookie Really in 2021 Bowman's Best?; Making Super Bowl Picks; Plus Is Topps Dynasty Super Underrated?
EPISODE 34 - Clark, Hyung, and John get into the contentious debate of which Wander Franco rookie card is his flagship rookie card. Is it in the 2021 Bowman's Best set due to a simple change in how prospects within that set are numbered (we explain in the show)? But off the top, the guys make their Super Bowl picks last week before the playoffs began (and one pick is already "dead wrong.") They end the show with the regular Pick One segment (the Hot Takes edition) by giving two hobby hot takes and then debating which one is more likely to happen. This week's Pick One pairs include: Foresnic Card Grading (FCG) becomes the next respected grading company to fill the void of BGS vs. SGC gold label passes BGS 10 pristine (not black label) in terms of pricing; The hobby will accept the 2021 Bowman's Best Wander Franco as his true first major league rookie card vs. the hobby will accept Topps Dynasty as the "Flawless/NT" of baseball; Lebron James Topps Chrome Rookie Card (PSA 10) will hit sub-$10K in value vs. Luka Doncic Panini Silver Prizm (PSA 10) will hit sub-$2K. More Hobby Hot Take Predictions for 2022 (Relic Patch Cards Making A Big Comeback? Fanatics Buying A Grading Company?); Are Modern Basketball Parallel Cards Worth $200K?
EPISODE 33 - The whole gang is back for this first full episode of 2022 and the guys, Clark, Hyung, and John give more hobby predictions for 2022 with some hot takes ranging from relic cards making a huge comeback to Fanatics not done buying out companies this year. But they kick off the show debating if the recent sale of the Lebron James 2020 Panini Prizm Gold Refractor (Kobe Bryant dunk tribute card) graded PSA 9 for more than $200K is insane or actually reasonable. Then they end the show with the regular Pick One segment by pitting two cards against each other and debating which one they'd rather invest in. This week's Pick One pairs include: Fernando Tatis Rainbow Foil Rookie Card vs. Vladimir Guerrero Topps Chrome Xfractor Card; Juan Soto 1st Bowman Chrome Base Autograph Card vs. Lewis Hamilton Topps Chrome Refractor PSA 10; Luka Doncic Silver Prizm Rookie Card PSA 10 vs. Luka Doncic Select Light Blue /299 PSA 10.  Check out our Instagram page specifically for this podcast @cardstothemoon so please give us a follow there (and DM us your 'Pick One" pairs to debate on a future podcast episode) and listen to our podcast on the platform of your choice at https://fivecardguys.com/podcast ! BONUS EPISODE: Fanatics Buys Out Topps – What Happens Next In The Hobby?
BONUS EPISODE 32: Clark and Hyung take a deeper dive into the massive news that Fanatics bought out Topps for a reported $500M-plus. What does that mean for the hobby exactly? Was the $500M too much or a steal to acquire Topps? Is Panini America the next acquisition target for Fanatics? Any concern about a Fanatics monopoly and what that might mean for the card market? Are there any legitimate competitors to Fanatics now or in the future? We tackle these questions head on in this episode.  For the transcript of our unaired episode on our 2022 hobby predictions (where we talked about everything from the future of NFTs in the hobby space to the state of retail this year) plus what our own personal collecting and investing hobby goals are, read the post here on fivecardguys.com Check out our Instagram page specifically for this podcast @cardstothemoon so please give us a follow there (and DM us your 'Pick One" pairs to debate on a future podcast episode) and listen to our podcast on the platform of your choice at https://fivecardguys.com/podcast ! 2021 Hobby Predictions We Got Right and Dead Wrong; Rating Recent Record Breaking Hobby Sales; Pick One - Hot Takes of What To Expect in the Hobby in 2022
EPISODE 30 - To end the 2021 season of Cards To The Moon, Clark, Hyung, and John look back at the year and see which hobby predictions they got right (ie. Stephen Curry cards to the moon!) and which ones they got dead wrong (ie. investing in Lakers this season or MPJ). But before they get into their hits and misses of 2021, the guys share their initial thoughts on Logan Paul's $3.5M purchase of an authenticated case of 1st edition Pokemon cards. And then they go over some other recent record breaking sales in the hobby (including a $750K+ Luka Doncic as well as $72K Spiderman PMG) and discuss whether they think the buyer overpaid or got a steal. The guys then end off the last show of 2021 with the "Pick One – Hot Takes Edition" with each offering two hot takes on what they expect to see in the hobby in 2022, which they will subsequently debate on which is more likely to occur. The Pick One pairs in this episode are: Bobby Witt Jr. 1st Bowman Chrome Auto will be a six-figure card (non superfractor) vs. Wander Franco 1st Bowman Chrome Autograph will be a six-figure card (non superfractor); The Honus Wagner T206 will become the first eight-figure card vs. any other card will become the first eight-figure card; Hockey cards are going to see a major boom in 2022 vs. golf cards are going to see a major boom in 2022. Are Color Match Parallel Cards Worth The Premium (plus other very specific collector preference cards)?; Too Late to Invest in 3-Point King Stephen Curry Rookies?; Talking PC Christmas Wish List Cards
EPISODE 29 - Clark, Hyung, and John discuss off the top what they would do with F1 sports cards (in particular with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen cards) now that the finale results are in. Plus they talk about whether it's too late to buy high-end sports cards of Stephen Curry now that he's the all-time 3-point leader. And in this week's "Hobby Headlines" segment, the guys give their take on whether it's worth the long-term investment in specific cards that are valued higher right now for very specific reasons such as "color match" cards where the color of the player's uniform matches the color of the parallel card (ie. Jayson Tatum Green Prizm rookie card). Or is it worth a premium for serial numbered cards that happen to be the jersey number of the player. Or are multi-color patch cards worth significantly more than patch cards with just one or two colors visible. Plus with Christmas around the corner, they play "Christmas Wish List" where Clark, Hyung, and John share which card they would love to have for their PC and that they would never sell. To cap off the show, they play "Pick One – Regular Edition" with each offering two sports cards, and then debating which one they'd rather invest in. The Pick One pairs in this episode are: Fernando Tatis Topps Chrome base auto (PSA 10) vs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Topps Chrome refractor auto (BGS 9.5/10); Stephen Curry Topps Chrome rookie card (PSA 10) vs. 1 Bitcoin; Luka Doncic Panini Silver Prizm (PSA 10) for $3,500 vs. Trae Young Panini Silver Prizm (PSA 10) for $1,200. EPISODE 26 - Clark, Hyung, and John kick off this show with what they're doing with modern base cards as the prices continue to tumble. Is it time to panic and liquidate or buy more at the dip? Then the guys get into the meat of today's episode by dissecting Josh Luber's (StockX Founder and now Chief Vision Officer of Fanatics Trading Cards) insightful White Paper/Essay on the state of the hobby. EPISODE 18 - Clark, Hyung, and John theorize about what happened in that video where a Donruss Optic football card was found in a Bowman Chrome baseball card pack. Moving on to "Hobby Headlines," the guys get deep into what the future of the hobby might look like with recent news from Fanatics that the company aspires to be a "one-stop shop" in five years when its MLB and NBA licensing deals come into effect (and all the current players in the hobby that might be in trouble including PSA, PWCC, local card stores, eBay). In a new segment called "Hobby Shoutout," Clark, Hyung, and John give props to those who they go to in the hobby for education and/or entertainment value (such as Scott Baldwin (@scottie_b_cards on Instagram), Geoff Wilson (@sportscardinvestor) and Sasha T (@sashatamaddon). EPISODE 16 - Clark, Hyung, and John revisit their discussion on who deserves to win the AL MVP (Vladdy vs. Shohei) and whose sports card they'd rather invest in now. Plus they get into their strategies of flipping cards in-season (or short-term flips) as a way to possibly build capital and invest in bigger cards. The guys also play "On A Budget" but this time it's the "high-roller edition" where they choose cards they like to invest in if they had $2,000, $5,000, and $10,000. To wrap up the show, they return to the "Pick One" segment, the hot takes edition, where they offer two hot takes and each one chooses which is more likely to happen, and what might be the sports card implications of that. QB Picks With Major Card Value Upside As New NFL Season Begins; New "Buy Buy Buy" Segment Showcasing Recent Sports Cards Bought; Hot Takes Galore (ie. Vladdy over Shohei as AL MVP?)
EPISODE 15 - Clark, Hyung, and John talk about the recent PSA update announcement and whether that changes anything (not really). Plus they give their QB picks and NBA sleepers for this upcoming season on who can potentially see their card value jump. And in the name of transparency, each of the guys discuss sports cards they recently bought and why they're super high on the player. The show caps off with the popular Pick One segment but this time with a twist. Instead of choosing two players to pit against each other (and then debating on which is the better investment), the guys give two hot takes and then they debate on which of the hot takes are more likely to happen (ie. Luka Doncic never wins an NBA Championship vs. Connor McDavid never wins a Stanley Cup). EPISODE 13: Clark, Hyung, and John discuss some underrated plays in the hobby, which is any play that more collectors should probably be thinking about to yield a good ROI in their sports card investments (ie. Investing in SGC 10 Sports Cards and Using "John's Ratios" to find deals). Plus the guys play Fast Five again, choosing whether they would buy, sell, or hold on these recently retired five athletes this week: Drew Brees; Eli Manning; Maria Sharapova; Dustin Pedroia; Vince Carter. Speaking of Pedroia, Hyung recalls what it was like to play against him in his freshman year (as well as a fun story about playing with a young Joey Votto back in 2005...in Amsterdam). And to close off the episode, John puts up a recent mega card trade in this week's "Pick One" segment. EPISODE 12: Clark, Hyung, and John go right into discussing the two major pieces of hobby news starting with the incredible Fanatics licensing deal with MLB and MLBPA. They play out scenarios on how that might impact the hobby including potentially living in a Topps-less world. And if that news wasn't enough, the guys also give their take on eBay suspending PWCC, one of the biggest consigners in the hobby, after accusing them of practising shill bidding on their auctions. Discussing "Hobby Logic" and Things That Only Make Sense in the Hobby; And Ranking Kobe Bryant's Top Five Sports Cards
EPISODE 4: Clark, Hyung, and John discuss things that only make sense in the hobby – otherwise referred to as "hobby logic." For instance, why are numbered Panini Select basketball cards worth less than some base Panini Prizm cards of the same player? Or why are shimmer and wave and other alternate refractors/parallels so undervalued compared to the same numbered "true refractors?" Or why are so-called "flagship" rookie cards worth much more even though the card design is ugly? Two words: Hobby logic. John also shares his top five Kobe Bryant basketball cards, and a bonus top five list of Kobe insert cards (so a top 10 list, really); and they also play "Pick One" again choosing which sports card to invest in between Sidney Crosby vs. Connor McDavid / Clayton Kershaw vs. Jacob deGrom / Kevin Durant vs. Stephen Curry.
