Are there contradictions in Scripture?

Are there contradictions in Scripture?

Have you ever been asked about certain passages in Scripture that seem to contradict themselves? For one who is trying to justify a life without Christ, this is often a key element of their argument. If the Bible, which claims to be God's inerrant word, makes a statement which cannot be true due to it contradicting another statement, then the claim of inerrancy falls apart and God's trustworthiness is broken. Over the next few episodes we will take a look at this subject and will dive into specific arguments that are made to try and discredit the truth of Scripture. We know that all Scripture is in fact given by God and we believe it to be 100% truthful and accurate in all it says. Because of this reality we want to look at how we should interact with Scripture and how we should respond to those who question its accuracy.

If you have a specific question about a supposed contradiction you have heard about, please email us and we would love to talk about it!!

You can email us at fluentgracepodcast@gmail.com.

Bonus Episode: Gift or Garbage?

Ever get a Christmas gift that just didn't cut it? In this bonus episode recorded the week after Christmas we talk about some very unique items and whether we would appreciate them as a gift or just toss them straight into the garbage.

The Post-Thanksgiving Episode

The Post-Thanksgiving Episode

Well, we recorded this the week after Thanksgiving but are just now getting it edited and published. Thank you for still listening!!

In this episode we talk about our least favorite Thanksgiving foods, how one of us thinks pineapple is the devils fruit, how deodorant should never be put on at night and we offer our thoughts on proper and improper prayer.

When Deconstruction is a Good Thing

When Deconstruction is a Good Thing

Two episodes ago we started a discussion on deconstruction, noting that as followers of Christ it is easy to doubt our faith but that my relationship with Christ should not be dependent on human feelings or emotion. In this episode we continue the discussion, talking about our response when we are hurt by the Church and about things in our faith that do in fact need to be deconstructed. We talk about the difference between deconstruction and rejection of faith, which although used synonymously are two different things. And just for fun we take some shots at those who would say popping lice is animal abuse in our super mega rant.

Pumpkin Spice Mega Rant

Every now and then you need to just skip the meaningful content and rant on something. And when more than one of us come with the same topic to rant on, it becomes a brand new super mega rant!!  Join us for a few minutes of mindless banter where we talk fender benders, pumpkin spice, and whether or not "Good question!!" is an appropriate response to someone asking a question in conversation.

Doubt your doubts

Doubt your doubts

In this episode we start tackling the topic of deconstruction. We discuss what it is, some things that may contribute to it in a person, and what we should do when faced with questions that seem too difficult to answer. This is part one of a multi-part discussion as it is a very weighty and important topic.

Is the Vaccine the Mark of the Beast?

Is the Vaccine the Mark of the Beast?

With the advent of a widely available vaccine that is intended to bring us closer to the end of our dealings with a global health crisis come the ones who are in staunch opposition to this vaccine. Some have even gone so far to say it is spoken of in Revelation as the mark of the beast. Could this be true? The guys tackle this question and discuss what's at the foundation of the mark John writes about in Scripture.

Our thoughts on Holy Week and the Lil' Nas X Controversy

Our thoughts on Holy Week and the Lil' Nas X Controversy

In this episode the guys talk about the controversy surrounding Lil' Nax X and his recent fashion statement. How does the Gospel influence our response to this controversy? Should we be outraged or compassionate? Should we condemn or be heartbroken? Having just come through Holy Week and the celebration of Christ's death and resurrection we are reminded that the Gospel sees all men in the same light; broken and condemned without the saving power of Jesus.

Oh, and we rip on the armpit of America.

Thanks for listening!!

Fluent Grace Preaches - After Darkness, Light

Fluent Grace Preaches - After Darkness, Light

In our second episode of Fluent Grace Preaches, Tyler shares a sermon from Matthew 27:45-66, the account of Jesus's death and burial. More than any other time in history, this stands alone as the single darkest moment; when the Son of God was killed by the very ones He created. This however is not the end of the story; because light is never brighter than after great darkness.

We're Thankful for Karen Memes

Curious as to what the guys of Fluent Grace are thankful for from 2020? Karen memes made this list, along with health, new children, baby back ribs, and more!! We also took the lil nitro challenge and two of the guys ate the world hottest gummy bear.

Check out our final episode recorded in 2020 and laugh along as we go through with our worst decision of the year.

Glitter is the Mayonnaise of Christmas

Glitter is the Mayonnaise of Christmas

This episode has it all: new intros, major life updates, a discussion of Christmas music, and our thoughts on cancel culture. As we get close to the end of 2020, one of the things that will define this year is mankind's willingness to cancel any and everything that we as individuals disagree with. Is this a gospel response to various elements of our culture? Or does this paint a picture totally contrary to the good news of the Gospel? Listen and find out how we answer that question.

Our music for the show is Felix Culpa by Kings Kaleidoscope.

Elephants, Donkeys, and The Gospel

Elephants, Donkeys, and The Gospel

It's been a while since we've been able to publish an episode but WE'RE BACK!! At least until we get swallowed up by school again. Clearly the biggest thing on everyone's radar at this point is the Presidential election. How does the Gospel affect our response to this political season? In this episode which was recorded after the first Presidential debate we talk about Gospel-centered ways we should think about politics, especially in a tense time such as this.

An Open Letter to Believers

What is a good response to someone, particularly a student, who is struggling with this hard season? In this episode we give a response to that, as well as rip on Pepsi, Covid parties, and Collin for not being here.

A Gospel Response to 2020 (part 2)

A Gospel Response to 2020 (part 2)

This year is only getting crazier and in this episode we continue talking about a Gospel response to the things we are living through. Nothing is going to change until the Gospel changes us, so how should our perspectives be shaped by what Christ did for us?

A Gospel Response to 2020 (The Gospel and the 'Rona)

A Gospel Response to 2020 (The Gospel and the 'Rona)

As we continue living in uncertain times of quarantine in a global pandemic, there is a reality far greater than any virus; the reality of the Gospel. Jesus is still good, is still God and is still with us as we navigate what has been to date a pretty nutty year.

Three Goobers in Quarentine

We're a lot better in person, but since we're quarantined like everyone else we gave the virtual episode a shot. In this episode we wonder what the Pope would do after retirement, we come up with an appropriate punishment for toilet paper hoarders, and Tim's phone dies so Tyler and Collin handle the outro. But at least it only takes twenty minutes.

Walking Through Depression - Part 2

Walking Through Depression - Part 2

In this episode Tim and Tyler continue their discussion on depression and how the Gospel should impact our perception of it. This was recorded a couple weeks ago before the widespread response to the Coronavirus, so we do not talk specifically about it in the episode. Tune in next time as we tie in our continued talk on depression with the historic rise of the global pandemic.

Walking Through Depression - Part 1

Walking Through Depression - Part 1

Ever struggled with depression? Or with being depressed? Is there a difference between the two? Well, in this episode we start the conversation around this very real and too often un-talked about subject. This is the first part in a four episode series where we focus on how the Gospel should impact our interaction with this subject; both in our own experience and in our support of those around us walking through a very painful season of depression.

Tokyo Olympics, 80 MILLION podcast listens, and sleeping with a trophey

**DISCLAIMER** This podcast was recorded the week after the Super Bowl. Since Tim has to do all the editing and post production and doesn't really have the time or necessary skills it has taken this long to get published.

In this episode, Tim and Collin talk about whatever random stuff comes to mind. Which means we create some new Olympic Sports, we liken an Alabama town to the state of Mississippi, and we impersonate the Super Bowl winning coach. We also plug the next really deep topic we're going to dig into starting next episode.

You don't want to miss it!!

Kobe Bryant and the Super Bowl Halftime Show

**DISCLAIMER** This podcast was recorded the week after the Super Bowl. Since Tim has to do all the editing and post production and doesn't really have the time or necessary skills it has taken this long to get published.

In this episode Tim and Tyler discuss the two biggest cultural events in the world of sports to date in 2020; Kobe Bryant's death and the controversial Super Bowl Halftime Show. We specifically talk about how the Gospel should influence our response to these events, and how in the case of death the Gospel is our only hope when faced with the question of eternity.

Just a little catch-up

Just a little catch-up

We're back!! Our first episode of 2020 is finally here. Don't get too excited though... Tim had the flu, Tyler was at a coffee shop, and Collin was busy saving someones life so our first episode was all over the place. That being said, we're glad to be back and look forward to getting into a more consistent recording routine.

It's Christmas!! In this episode the guys bat around all things Christmas, from Elf on the Shelf, to Lifetime movies, to what about the Christmas story they find most amazing. From each of us, we hope you have had a great Christmas season, and may you live the other eleven months of the year in the reality that God sent his son to become Immanuel.

Talkin' the Psalms

Talkin' the Psalms

This episode was recorded before 28; we were just not able to get it published. Because of that, some of the content is a bit dated (it was recorded on Veterans Day).

In this episode we talk through a listener submitted question on Psalm 25:10. Within the question we talk about God's love and faithfulness, along with our responsibility as followers of Christ as we respond to Him. This springboards us into a discussion of a number of other passages in the Psalms, all of which point to the faithful love of God.

Thoughts on the problem of sin and evil

Thoughts on the problem of sin and evil

The problem has been around since the beginning of time... why is there sin and evil. More specifically, did God create evil, does He orchestrate it, or as some might say, can He not even look upon it? In no way do we fully answer these timeless questions; in fact, we would submit that in many ways this is a subject that will never be fully understood until we are living in eternity with Jesus. Still, we will always try to answer an honest question and so in this episode we discuss the problem of evil, and talk about whether or not God can even look upon sin.

What's Up With Denominations?

What's Up With Denominations?

In this episode, we discuss denominations. Is there one that is right and all the others are wrong? Are they all basically the same thing? What's the difference between them? While none of these get answered exhaustively we touch on them and leave you with our thoughts on how we should approach those who may be part of a different denomination than we are. We also touch on the difference between a cult and a denomination, AND we define what Lafoying would be.

Celebrity Christians

Celebrity Christians

In this episode the guys talk about celebrity Christians. What should our response be when high profile celebrities with questionable lifestyles turn to Christ? What about celebrity pastors? We talk specifically about the recent conversion of Kanye West, and the profession made by Justin Bieber in recent years. The reality is that we are all saved by grace, regardless of our level of celebrity. If Christ is being proclaimed, as Paul said in Philippians 1 we rejoice!!

Salvation. Predestination. Huh?

Salvation. Predestination. Huh?

This week we are re-posting one of the episodes we published a few months ago related to salvation. The doctrine of salvation is a non-negotiable for one desiring to follow Christ, but what about predestination and election? How do we make sense of something that has been discussed and even argued about for thousands of years?

Should I Hate my Life?

Should I Hate my Life?

If we were to make a list of the most confusing or misunderstood verses in scripture, John 12:25 would definitely be on the list. One of our students asked about this verse, specifically if Jesus is telling us to hate our life. In this episode we interact with the verse and hopefully provide a bit of clarity around this admittedly strange statement.

What's up with wisdom in James 1?

In this episode we answer a question that has been submitted to us related to James chapter 1. We talk about the context of wisdom in this passage and how we should approach God in requesting this wisdom. We also draft our three ingredient Subway sandwiches and have a new segment called "Someone argues something stupid." You don't want to miss out!!

What to do when sin is more attractive than Jesus

What to do when sin is more attractive than Jesus

Let’s be real. Sometimes sin is just more appealing or attractive than Jesus. Why is that? And what are we to do when faced with a situation like this? Tim and Tyler discuss these questions, both from the perspective of a believer, and from the perspective of one who is struggling to make the life changing commitment to Jesus.

How the Gospel Should Affect Daily Life

How the Gospel Should Affect Daily Life

A lot of times we know the right answers but are unsure how those answers should apply to daily life. In this episode we talk about some ways the Gospel should be practically evident in the day to day life of a student. Not only a student though, the question of living the Gospel is something we all have to wrestle with and figure out how to do it in a way that brings honor to Jesus.

As a bonus question, we had a live audience this week and were asked if it was possible to love someone without liking them. Check out the episode to see how we answered!!

It's our birthday party... with the worlds longest cake

We are officially twenty episodes into our podcasting journey and we have loved every minute of it. In this episode we give a shout out to the 50 countries that have listened over the past couple months, AND we enjoy something that has not happened in any of the previous 19... a studio audience. On top of that we talk through our disgust of handkerchiefs, our perplexity at TSA regulations, and our frustration at those who harmonize when singing happy birthday. Oh, and we talk about church marques signs, phrases Christians probably shouldn't use, and the worlds longest birthday cake. We packed a lot in so give it a listen!!

Jeremiah 29:11 (and other verses taken out of context)

Jeremiah 29:11 (and other verses taken out of context)

In this episode Tim and Tyler discuss more verses that are often used out of context. We all know them; we all probably use them, but as followers of Christ we have a responsibility to properly read and speak of God's word. In Ephesians 6 we are told that God's word is our only offensive weapon against the devil, but scripture taken out of context is not only a weak weapon, but can also paint an inaccurate picture of Christ to an unbelieving world.

Philippians 4:13 (and other verses taken out of context)

Philippians 4:13 (and other verses taken out of context)

Scripture is essential in the life of a believer. Scripture taken out of context though can be used to justify most anything, even things that clearly do not line up with the rest of God’s word. In this episode we run through some of these verses and talk about ways in which they are taken out of context, along with giving the full context and a brief meaning of the passages. We also introduce a new game where we try to determine if a news story is from Mississippi or the Onion... just for fun.

Salvation. Predestination. Huh?

Salvation. Predestination. Huh?

One of the hardest doctrines to understand in all of scripture is the doctrine of predestination, or election. In this episode we jump into that discussion, though in full transparency even we do not fully understand it. The one thing we do fully understand is that salvation is a gift from God and whether you believe in predestination or not that fact doesn't change. Salvation is only possible because of Jesus, his sacrificial death on the cross and resurrection to new life. Unless we get that piece right, everything else is wrong.

Questions Students Want to Ask - Part 6

Questions Students Want to Ask - Part 6

One of the hardest questions in the Christian life is why does God allow trials and temptations. Actually the question is easy; it’s the answer that is hard. We see things from our limited human perspective, and through that lens it sometimes appears as if God doesn’t really care about us, or even that God isn’t truly good. How do we deal with this question, and how should our answer affect how we live?

Questions Students Want to Ask - Part 5

Let’s be honest; Life is hard. More specifically, life is really hard for teenagers. How does one in that season stay consistent as a follower of Christ, especially with all of the distractions that come with it? In this episode we talk about some of the challenges of being a Christian teenager, and explore what a genuine relationship with God really means.

Questions Students Want to Ask - Part 4

Questions Students Want to Ask - Part 4

The topic all students want to hear about is sex. So we talk about it. Unlike most platforms that broach this subject however, we do not talk about the do's and don'ts. Rather, we talk about the reason behind the "rules" and how we can honor Christ in this area. We also talk about how we should respond in the event of a broken relationship; be it a romantic break-up, or any other relational split.

Questions Students Want to Ask - Part 3

Questions Students Want to Ask - Part 3

Life would be a whole lot easier without having to deal with other people. But then again, most things are easier when you can just take care of it by yourself. The reality though is that we can’t live under a rock for very long, and we have to be in relationships with those around us. In fact, the very reason we were created is to be in a relationship. Our earthly relationships, easy or difficult, are meant to picture the relationship between God and man. In this episode we talk about how to navigate some of the more difficult aspects of being in relationship with other people, specifically when they hurt us.

Questions Students Want to Ask - Part 2

In part 2 of our attempt to answer some specific questions asked by students, we talk about what to do if a friend is going down the road to rebellion, or is struggling with doubt. How do we respond? Do we keep being their friend or do we completely separate from that person? While no answer can be given that would apply to all situations, we try to discuss general principles that are based on biblical precedent.

Questions Students Want to Ask - Part 1

In this episode we address some commonly asked questions among teenagers today. Questions like, how do I know what God's will is? What kind of music is good/bad? How do I live with parents or siblings who do not follow Jesus? This is the first part in a series of episodes that will continue over the next few weeks.

As always, if you have any specific questions you would like answered, feel free to send them our way on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or through our email account.

Dealing with Doubt

Dealing with Doubt

If you have ever taken a breath, you have experienced doubt. It’s natural, frustrating, and at times scary. Am I really saved? Does God really love me? Is there really a God? Is God really good? These and countless others are questions asked on a regular basis by those desiring to follow Jesus, or even by those who are just seeking some measure of peace in a troubled world. In this episode we provide some commentary on this issue and talk through some proper ways of dealing with our doubts.

Weird stories in Scripture and why they're included

Weird stories in Scripture and why they're included

Throughout scripture there are some classic stories that everyone knows, regardless of whether they know Jesus or go to church. Noah and the flood, David and Goliath, the Birth of Jesus; most people have at least some knowledge of these stories and why they are included in scripture. There are however, some more obscure stories that when read at first glance seem out of place, or even inconsistent with the rest of the Bible. What do we do with these stories, and how do we reconcile them with the statement in 2 Timothy that says all scripture is given by inspiration of God?

Thoughts on Social Media

Thoughts on Social Media

Thanks to social media our world is more connected, yet also more isolated than ever before. We spend a ridiculous amount of time doing who knows what on our favorite social media platform, while often rejecting the most important relationships in our lives. In this episode we talk through some dangers of social media, yet also acknowledge the lack of any inherent evil within their existence. If we could choose one word to sum up our position it would be caution. Though social media is not inherently sinful, it can often lead to attituded and actions that are clearly in opposition to what is laid out in scripture. We should always approach our social media use in wisdom, asking the Lord to help guide us in using it to best glorify Him.

Can/Should Christians Disagree?

Can/Should Christians Disagree?

One of the biggest problems we come across today is the people do not know how to civilly disagree with each other. It seems as if folks get so dead set on their own opinions and beliefs that they are unable to respectfully and lovingly disagree when others may hold other convictions. In this episode we discuss the idea of disagreeing with fellow Christians; is it ok? is it not ok? should we all have the same opinions and beliefs on things? We also talk about our great love and appreciation for the state of Mississippi.

What is Repentance?

What is Repentance?

No one likes to acknowledge sin, but the reality is we all deal with it. In this episode we discuss the proper response to sin, how if we are going to follow Jesus we must do more than just recognize we did something wrong. Repentance involves confession, contrition, and conversion; each of which must be present in the life of a believer as we respond to the sin in our lives.

How do I hear God?

One of the most common questions among teenagers who want to follow Jesus is related to hearing God's voice. Why Faith?

Just as the Gospel is foundational to everything we will be discussing on this podcast, so too is faith.
