WHY MIRRORLESS INSTEAD OF DSLR?

I think the mirrorless cameras have come a long way since their introduction and that’s why it’s very difficult to recommend a regular DSLR.

PROS

* Face/Eye detection. Some brands have animal Eye AF

* Edge to Edge focus read out

* Lightweight, portable

* Image stabilization (5 Axis IBIS)

* Video quality

* Shooting speed

* Electronic shutter

* Electronic Viewfinder

CONS

* Battery life ( majority of models )

* Not made for bigger hands (ergonomics)

* Lens selection not as wide as DSLR’s

Lenses

  • Primes
    • Fixed focal length, Typical aperture of 2.8 to 1.2. Super sharp
  • Zooms
    • More versatile, Typical aperture of 2.8 to 5.6. Most common for traveling
  • Telephoto
    • Made for long reach, Used on weddings, Sports and Wildlife
  • Macro
    • A more specialize lens. Used for weddings details, Very close subjects

Quick description on the few more popular lenses out there

Prime lenses

Prime lenses are a specific group of lenses that only have one focal length. You can find them from very wide to telephoto reach and they’re very popular for their fast apertures. Since the lens don’t have the extra glass and mechanism inside they’re more sharper that zoom lenses.

Zoom lenses

Zoom lenses are the more versatile group that gives you more that one focal length. You can get wide zooms all the way to telephoto. Having a zoom lens its more practical because you’ll have more options in one package. They’re not as fast as the primes and not as sharp but it will let you shoot more since you don’t have to switch the lens or get to your other camera if you have one to get another focal length. Also the fastest the aperture the more expensive they get.

Telephoto lenses

This ones you can find them from 70mm all the way to 600mm and maybe more. They’re more used on weddings, wildlife and sports for their long reach. They come in prime and zoom options also. You can also used them for portraiture because it will give you a very nice bokeh thanks to the separation that you’ll get between the subject and the background.

Macro lenses

Macro in photography means short or closeups. They’re used for getting very small subjects in frame. Wedding photographers use them for getting details like rings and accessories and other photographers get insects or items in frame that is not be able to so with other lenses like zooms. They come with different focal lengths from 60mm all the way to 100mm or maybe more

In 2013 we took a flew to San Francisco to do a Northern California road trip. In part 1 we shared our memories and experiences, and in part 2 we’ll discuss and give tips on how to  plan, research, and budget your own photo road trip.

PLANNING

* Have an itinerary

    * Gives you a guideline of the places you want to visit.

    * Keep it flexible: plans change whether due to unexpected events, weather, or closures/cancelations.

    * Use google maps for routes and estimated travel times. This will give you an idea how much time you can    spend at each location and how many places you can visit in a day.

BUDGETING

* Transportation

    * car rentals, air fare, taxi, tolls, gasoline per day, Etc.

* Lodging

    * Pricing and availability

* Food

* Items you need

* Gear rentals if you’re going to take some with you

RESEARCH

* General weather/climate conditions of locations you plan to visit

* Availability - is it currently open or closed for business. Has it been temporarily shut down. What are the times of operation?

* Check for open roads and park entrances if it has multiple ones

* Make reservations in advance for places that require it and/or with high tourist activity

* Type of car you’ll need

TIPS

* Keep it light especially when flying to your location

* Know your essentials (i.e. medication)

* We recommend renting a hybrid to save fuel costs

* Get a GPS navigator

* Get a cheap cellphone with a carrier you don’t have. Verizon

* Carry multiple memory cards or take a portable HD for storage on the go if you don’t want to carry your computer.

    * I’d say not to take your laptop, it’s a source of distraction and add to bulk. -R

* Always carry a cleaning kit for you camera with cloths so you can clean your lenses

* Carry snacks if you’re going to a remote place and you’re planning to stay

ORIGINS

In 2013 we took a flight to San Francisco to do a Northern California road trip. We wanted two things: First, to travel to new locations with amazing sights not available in Florida. Second, to experience good coffee.

As already mentioned, we chose to travel to Northern California for 8 days. I found a route through a website called TakeMyTrip.com that took us through Northern California, Nevada, and Southern Oregon. We modified the route based on our interest, for example by starting and finishing in San Francisco.

(For show notes: http://takemytrip.com/trip-crater-lake-yosemite/)

From the start we knew this trip had to be as inexpensive as possible in order to maximize the places we could visit and stay. Since we would be on the road the majority of the time, we knew we would stay in economic (but not cheap) hotels that could be booked anytime; we would book a room depending wherever we might be that night.

We wanted to start in San Francisco because one of our first shared interests was Tech.

We were and still are to varying degrees so we HAD to visit Silicon Valley and check out—first and foremost—the Apple campus and then the Googleplex.

WHAT WE DID

Our route took us from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe, Reno, Pyramid Lake, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Crater Lake, Redwood & Humboldt National Parks, a last minute trip to Yosemite, and back to SF.

Because we didn’t have reservations, we could alter the schedule depending on the situation—for example, if we planned to stay at a place for 2 hours but it actually took us 1. We added places or removed some, depending on the situation.

* San Francisco and Half Moon Bay

* Silicon Valley

* Weather

* Lake Tahoe

* Reno, Pyramid Lake, and getting lost.

* McArthur-Burney Falls

* Crater Lake

* Oregon scenery

* The winding roads at night near redwoods

* Crescent City and Klamath Cove

* Yosemite

* All the good coffee shops

Pyramid Lake was alright but I wouldn’t visit again. I would rather visit a place like Mount Shasta or some of the Oregon coast

We want to give a shoutout to Geramel Castellanos—on Instagram as @geramel88—that submitted two photos to our previous project Sunrise and Sunsets. He submitted a wide shot of a sunset in the park. Keep up the good work Geramel

In our previous episodes we’ve covered basics on how to start taking photos and finding the perfect gear. Today we’re going to talk about getting out there and start practicing.

* Think about what you want to shoot—choose a theme and plan accordingly.

        * Give some theme examples (Abandoned, architecture, alleys, books, cars, flags, forms in Nature, transport, weather)

        * [ https://photographyicon.com/photography-themes/ + https://fatmumslim.com.au/.how-to-play-photo-day/ ]

        * Check the weather!

        * You’ll want to carry the proper gear (I.e. If you’re going on a photowalk you might not want to carry a lot of bulky gear. When going out in the     Great Outdoors you’ll want to wear appropriate clothing.)

* If heading out to a different location, get info about the the place. You don’t want to drive out to a place that’s not open to the public or doesn’t allow photography.

* Take a buddy with you

    * Fun and helpful

    * Burner phone with good signal!

* If your plan doesn’t seem to be working or conditions change, adjust your plan and shoot something else. Change presents new opportunities.

We want to give a small project for those first listeners that want to start something and don’t know how:

* An easy project to start creating — smiling people. Go ahead and make someone smile! Upload your photo to Instagram with the hashtag #focuspointspodproject

Focus Points Photography Podcast Ep 1: "Start your photography adventure"

You can find Amaurie Ramirez also on www.amaurierazphoto.com . There you can find all his social media accounts also a large variety of prints for sale.

EPISODE NOTES

We want to use this podcast to educate:

  • how to start despite your budget
  • encourage those starting out

How we started taking photos, what made us start, and what we used.

  • We were single and had time for leisure.
  • We were searching for the perfect cup of coffee and traveled to different locations.
  • Using the opportunity of being in various towns, we took photos and edited them on our phones (iPhone and Google Nexus), then post to social media.
  • Instagram’s “Weekend Hashtag Projects” for motivation and for ideas.

What we recommend:

  1. Use your phone if you don’t have a camera.
  2. Find inspiration from other photographers
  3. Watch tutorial videos
  4. Listen to photography podcasts
  5. Read about how to compose your photos
  6. Choose a theme
  7. Which photography genre interest you the most — if street photography, go and hit the streets: always look up for a new perspective, shoot down low. Look for reflections, architecture, patterns, colors, etc.
    If you like Nature, go to state parks, lakes and waterways, national parks if you have any nearby.
    For portraits ask family and friends to pose
  8. If you have a camera — use automatic mode if you don’t know how to use manual mode, shoot in JPEG until you learn how to shoot RAW. Play with it.
  9. Use your computer to edit the photos — if you have a Mac you can use the Photos app to tweak the brightness, shadows, contrast, etc. You can also edit with your own phone.
  10. Editing software/apps
    • Lightroom (desktop and mobile)
    • Afterlight
    • Carbon is great app for black and white photography
    • Snapseed, very useful and full of features. One of the apps we used the most in our early days.
  11. Get accessories if you can
    • Tripod, backpacks, extra batteries
    • Phones these days shoot in dark mode and a tripod is ideal for stability if you want to shoot at night
  12. Go and shoot, shoot, shoot

I want to give a small project for those first listeners that want to start something and don’t know how.

  • An easy project to start creating — take sunrise and sunset photos. Upload your photo to Instagram with the hashtag #focuspointspodproject
  • We want to see your work and give you a shout out on our next episode with some tips
