John Alan Simon & Elizabeth Karr on Dennis Hopper's OUT OF THE BLUE
John Alan Simon & Elizabeth Karr (Discovery Productions) on OUT OF THE BLUE A kind of spiritual sequel (and cautionary counterpoint) to Hopper’s own Easy Rider, OUT OF THE BLUE chronicles the idealism of the sixties decline into the hazy nihilism of the 1980’s. Don Barnes (Dennis Hopper) is a truck driver in prison for drunkenly smashing his rig into a school bus. Linda Manz (Days of Heaven) plays Cebe, his daughter, a teen rebel obsessed with Elvis and The Sex Pistols. Her mother (Sharon Farrell) waitresses, shoots up drugs and takes refuge in the arms of other men. Cebe runs away to Vancouver’s punk scene and ends up on probation under the care of psychiatrist Raymond Burr. After Don’s release, the family struggles to re-connect before the revelation of dark secrets leads to a harrowing conclusion. Working from the original 35mm negative restored by Discovery in 2010, John Alan Simon and Elizabeth Karr’s Discovery Productions undertook the digital scan and mastering of Out of the Blue to premiere as an official selection at the Venice Film Festival in 2019, preserving Hopper’s landmark film to make it available to new audiences. The New 4K restoration is being shown for the first time on the big screen theatrically at Metrograph in November, 2021 in New York. Hallee Adelman on OUR AMERICAN FAMILY
OUR AMERICAN FAMILY is a radically honest, unfiltered portrait of a close-knit Philadelphia family fighting its greatest nemesis: generational addiction. Beginning with a pivotal, “nothing to lose” moment, then captured over the course of the following year, five family members tired of life plagued by addiction on center stage, each struggle to transcend their crippling histories: a mother who learned from childhood to enable her own mother’s addiction, a daughter who doesn’t know who she is without a substance, a son who learned everything about “Heroin 101” from his sister, a younger son who feels alone but acts content to ease the family’s burden, and a stepfather who wonders if addiction is really a disease or simply a by-product of laziness. What will it take to shift this entrenched, wrenching pattern in their lives? How will they each free themselves from their interlocking fates? Will they be able to make significant changes to help their next generation? The members of OUR AMERICAN FAMILY invite us into their lives to find hope and to explore what is possible. No experts. No drug use. No melodrama. To purchase tickets for this weeks screening go to https://filmadelphia.org/events/pff30-our-american-family/

LUZZU with Alex Camilleri and Jesmark Scicluna

He can repair his leaky luzzu – a traditional, multicolored wooden fishing boat – in the hopes of eking out a meager living at sea for his wife and newborn son, just as his father and grandfather did before him. Or he can decommission it in exchange for an EU payout and cast his lot with a sinister black-market operation that is decimating the Mediterranean fish population and the livelihoods of the local families who depend on it. Luzzu won a Sundance Jury Prize for its nonprofessional lead actor Jesmark Scicluna, a real-life Maltese fisherman, and heralds the arrival of writer-director-editor Alex Camilleri. His gripping film operates in the neorealist tradition of Luchino Visconti, Roberto Rosselini, and the Dardenne brothers and calls to mind the work of his mentor Ramin Bahrani (Man Push Cart, The White Tiger), also a producer of the film.

Jessica Devaney on Pray Away
In the 1970s, five men struggling with being gay in their Evangelical church started a Bible study to help each other leave the "homosexual lifestyle." They quickly received over 25,000 letters from people asking for help and formalized as Exodus International, the largest and most controversial conversion therapy organization in the world. But leaders struggled with a secret: their own “same-sex attractions” never went away. After years as Christian superstars in the religious right, many of these men and women have come out as LGBTQ, disavowing the very movement they helped start. Focusing on the dramatic journeys of former conversion therapy leaders, current members, and a survivor, PRAY AWAY chronicles the “ex gay" movement’s rise to power, persistent influence, and the profound harm it causes. Today my guest is the producer of PRAY AWAY Jessica Devaney

Harry Greenberger on HERE AFTER
Today my guest is Harry Greenberger, the director and writer behind HERE AFTER. The film is a dark fantasy-comedy about searching for love in the afterlife and acts as something of a rorschach test. It would be easy to see the film as a simple rom-com but I genuinely feel that film has far more on its mind. I highly recommend you check it out this Friday 7/23 when it will be available on VOD. Thanks to Bookmans for sponsoring the show, Footnanny for helping rub my wifes feet, and to Fort Worth for the closing song. I hope you enjoy the show.

I had Danny on the show today to talk about GRAND-DADDY DAY CARE but we also talk tacos, classic cars, and how he made a screening of George Clooney's UP IN THE AIR an uncomfortable experience for anyone within earshot. GRAND-DADDY DAY CARE will be available to rent or own on DVD and Digital on Tuesday, February 5th. The film stars Danny Trejo, Reno Wilson, Roxana Ortega, Garrett Morris, Margaret Avery, and George Wendt. The film is a hysterical follow up to the beloved family comedy Daddy Day Care. Kevin Corrigan on SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH
Today I’m joined by legendary character actor Kevin Corrigan to discuss his latest film SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH. You might know Kevin from his work in GOODFELLAS, TRUE ROMANCE, THE DEPARTED, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, and the woefully underrated RESULTS. SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH takes place in NYC at the height of the pandemic and focuses on two priests who open their church doors to those seeking salvation during the most isolating of times. From the commonplace to the truly metaphysical, their visitors reflect the full spectrum of personal crises of spirituality. Throughout their encounters with the city's sweetest, wildest and weirdest, the two priests learn the importance of connection, empathy and open-mindedness. While the film takes place in the pandemic, it's not ABOUT the pandemic. It's about asking questions and listening, it's about the importance of fellowship in difficult times. The characters in the film wrestle with universal questions that we have been asking since our earliest days. In that way, I feel like SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH will be the kind of film that audiences will discover for years to come. SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH will be in theatres and VOD on Friday July 2nd. Big thanks to Bookmans for sponsoring the show. And thanks to Fort Worth for letting me use the song at the end. Richard Armitage on SLEEPWALKER
SLEEPWALKER is the latest film from director Elliott Lester. Troubled by bouts of sleepwalking and disturbing nightmares, graduate student Sarah Foster goes to her university's sleep research center for help. When she wakes up after her first night of being monitored, the world she lives in seems to have changed in subtle, Twilight-Zone-esque ways. In fact, every time she goes to sleep now, she wakes up in a slightly different version of her world. With the help of sleep researcher Dr. Scott White, she tries to work her way back to the reality she started in. But when they finally succeed, it’s revealed that Sarah’s world is not what she thought at all. Today my guest is one of the stars SLEEPWALKER, Richard Armitage. Tonight we talk about his work on that film as well as his work as Thorin Oakenshiled in The Hobbit Films, as John Proctor in The Crucible, and his upcoming films, OCEANS 8 and the Julie Delpy directed film MY ZOE. CRUEL SUMMER with Director of Photography Jayson Crothers
Thank you for listening to the Following Films podcast. Today my guest is Jayson Crothers. I had Jayson on the show to discuss his work on the hit Freeform series Cruel Summer. The show is told over three summers in the 1990s and is about a girl who goes missing and another who mysteriously takes over her life. We also discuss our shared love of Battlestar Galactica and Jayson convinces me to take the plunge on 300+ episodes of Supernatural…. Well dip my toes in at the very least. We had some technical issues the first time we recorded so you will notice an abrupt ending in the first half of our conversation. I could have spliced the two pieces together and made the episode feel like it all took place at once but there were about 4 days in between the two halves that had a slightly different feel. I’d prefer to expose the warts and put out a more honest representation of our conversations. Or I’m lazy and all the “honesty” nonsense is a way to justify my hatred of the editing process. And yet another reason I’d make a terrible filmmaker. Teona Strugar Mitevska on God Exists Her Name is Petrunya
Today I'm Joined by the director of God Exists Her Name is Petrunya. The film is based on a true story. It takes place in Stip, a small town in Macedonia. Every 19th of January for the holiday of Epiphany, the throwing of the cross event takes place in almost all the Orthodox world of Eastern Europe. The local priest throws a wooden cross into the river and hundreds of men dive after it. Good fortune and prosperity are guaranteed to the man who retrieves it. This time, the young woman Petrunya dives into the water on a whim and manages to grab the cross before the others. Her competitors are furious, the local population as well as religious establishments are outraged as women aren’t allowed to take part in the ritual. All hell breaks loose, but Petrunya holds her ground. The next day, in an interview to the local television station she encourages more women to jump for the cross in the future. She is labelled by the population as a "crazy/disturbed/troubled" young woman. God Exists Her Name is Petrunya will be in theatres and virtual cinemas on June 25th. If you happen to live in NY or LA try to see this in a theatre, obviously if you are comfortable, if you have your shot and haven’t been to the cinema in awhile I can’t think of a better way to jump back in. Mimi Chakarova on STILL I RISE
Although the US is a country that was built on immigration, the essential stories of immigrants and their experiences have largely been swept to the side when it comes to portrayals in the media. Emmy award-winning filmmaker Mimi Chakarova, founder of Still I Rise, is working to change that. Addressing themes of adversity, race, migration, and gender, Still I Rise dives deep into uncovering the raw and honest stories that we only catch a high-level glimpse of on the evening news. Still I Rise pushes the boundaries of filmmaking while exploring adversity and compassion through raw and honest artistry. The "Still I Rise" film series and fellowship program support the projects of women filmmakers who have shown great promise in the field of visual storytelling and documentary filmmaking. Their goal is to provide a platform for creative work that aims to change perceptions through the power of storytelling. This year, Still I Rise Films has dedicated $50,000 to fellowship support, along with a mentorship lab, for U.S. based artists who push the boundaries in documentary film, animation and/or mixed media. The awarded projects must address the theme of "Still I Rise" and offer a new look at adversity and rising above the odds. Applications must be received by May 15th, 2021. https://www.stillirisefilms.org/submissions Become a subscriber today and you'll get access to; all of our new episodes days before non-subscribers, archived episodes over 6 months old, and exclusive content https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/subscribe

Ross Riege on RUTHERFORD FALLS
Cinematographer Ross Riege’s new TV series project RUTHERFORD FALLS will debut on Peacock on April 22. Ross developed an elevated, cinematic look, more common in films and prestige dramas than comedy series. He shot in large format (which is very unusual for a comedy) with the ARRI Alexa Mini LF. Co-created by actor Ed Helms, producer Michael Schur and Superstore writer and Navajo, Sierra Teller Ornelas, Rutherford Falls is a comedy about best friends played by Helms and Jana Schmieding, who are both deeply invested in the cultural history of their small town. The series also represents a huge breakthrough in Native representation, with a Native series lead (Schmieding) and regular, as well as one of largest Indigenous rooms on television, with five Native writers including co-creator Ornelas.

Sophia Nahli Allison on A LOVE SONG FOR LATASHA
Today I chat with Sophia Nahli Allison about her Oscar nominated short documentary film A LOVE SONG FOR LATASHA. The film is currently streaming on Netflix. A reimagined narrative of Latasha Harlins through intimate memories shared by her cousin and best friend. The injustice surrounding the shooting death of 15-year-old Latasha Harlins at a South Central Los Angeles store became a flashpoint for the city’s 1992 civil uprising. As the Black community expressed its profound pain in the streets, Latasha’s friends and family privately mourned the loss of a vibrant child whose full story was never in the headlines. Three decades later, director Sophia Nahli Allison’s A LOVE SONG FOR LATASHA removes Latasha from the context of her death and rebuilds an archive of a promising life lost. Oral history and memories from Latasha’s best friend and cousin converge in a dreamlike portrait that shows the impact one brief but brilliant life can have. Director Sophia Nahli Allison grew up in South Central Los Angeles and recalls experiencing the 1992 L.A. riots as a four year-old girl. Though Latasha's death was a catalyst for the riots, Sophia wanted to make a film about Latasha's life so she would be remembered beyond the trauma of a Black body, beyond a statistic, a newspaper headline, or an inaccurate Wikipedia page.

Zeller’s proof of concept short film SCARS is based on viral IP and has gone on to win several awards in the festival circuit. Nancy Allen on the 40th Anniversary of CARRIE, and her work in ROBOCOP, and BLOW OUT
Forty years ago this November, one of the most innovative horror movies in Hollywood history hit theaters and set the box office on fire. Based on a then up-and-coming writer named Stephen King, Carrie crystallized all the agonies of adolescence into the story of a shy, sheltered girl with telekinetic powers. Director Brian De Palma had been working in the independent field since the 1960s, but this film was his first box office hit and put him on the map as one of the major auteurs of the New Hollywood. De Palma filled the cast with many talented young actors making their first important features, including John Travolta, Nancy Allen, Amy Irving, William Katt, P.J. Soles, and Betty Buckley. For the leading role, he chose relative newcomer Sissy Spacek, who received her first Oscar nomination for the film, and to play her religious fanatic mother, De Palma cast Piper Laurie in her first film since The Hustler 15 years earlier. (She received her second Oscar nomination for her performance.) Today's my guest is Nancy Allen who went on to star in several other films directed by De Palma, including Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, she also starred in Strange Invaders, RoboCop, and Out of Sight. On this episode, we talk about the 40th Anniversary of Carrie, her work with DePalma, Spielberg and Soderberg. We also touch on Hollywood remakes, our shared love for the Andy Griffith film Face in The Crowd and how her character Chris in Carrie could speak with her mouth full. We also chat about her involvement with WeSpark a non-profit organization that offers free support groups, integrative therapies, and creative and educational workshops to all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. Jeff Groth Editor on CHERRY, JOKER, and COMMUNITY
Today I'm joined by editor Jeff Groth to discuss his work on CHERRY, JOKER, and COMMUNITY. “Cherry” follows the wild journey of a disenfranchised young man from Ohio who meets the love of his life, only to risk losing her through a series of bad decisions and challenging life circumstances. Inspired by the best-selling novel of the same name, “Cherry” features Tom Holland in the title role as an unhinged character who drifts from dropping out of college to serving in Iraq as an Army medic and is only anchored by his one true love, Emily (Ciara Bravo). When Cherry returns home a war hero, he battles the demons of undiagnosed PTSD and spirals into drug addiction, surrounding himself with a menagerie of depraved misfits. Draining his finances, Cherry turns to bank robbing to fund his addiction, shattering his relationship with Emily along the way. Brought to the screen in bold, gritty fashion by visionary directors Anthony and Joe Russo, “Cherry” is a darkly humorous, unflinching coming-of-age story of a man on a universal quest for purpose and human connection. “Cherry” will premiere in select theaters on February 26, 2021 and globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, March 12, 2021.
