Erik Messerschmidt Interview on Devotion
Erik Messerschmidt Interview on Devotion
For the upcoming major motion picture Devotion – the anticipated Korean War-era feature film based on the acclaimed book and directed by J. D. Dillard, starring Jonathan Majors, Glen Powell, Christina Jackson, and Joe Jonas and coming out November 23 -- award-winning director of photography Erik Messerschmidt, ASC leveraged his decades of experience to create stunning visuals that entwine narrative, action sequences, landscape, and compelling insights into the human condition. To bring dynamic vibrancy to the film, which focuses on the true story of a black naval officer who befriends a white naval officer, Messerschmidt used real planes shot in actual locations. Many of the cockpit interiors, particularly the “Bearcat” sequence in the beginning of the film, are entirely authentic. For the combat sequences the actors were shot in front of an LED volume similar to “The Mandalorian” so the footage could be captured in camera. A big movie shot on budget much smaller than typical Hollywood tentpoles, Messerschmidt worked with director Dillard to create a character-driven action film that harkens back to a 90s-style blockbuster in a classical style. Almost every frame that was shot made it into the final cut. Today I’m joined by Erik Messerschmidt to discuss his work on Devotion and his collaborations with Micheal Mann and David Fincher This conversation was recorded over cell phone so the audio quality is a bit lower than normal but I think its still listenable.

SHANTARAM Cinematographer Stefan Duscio
Today I’m joined by cinematographer Stefan Duscio to discuss his latest work, the Apple TV+ series, Shantaram. Based on the internationally best-selling novel by Gregory David Roberts, the 1980s set drama follows a fugitive who escapes prison and reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay. Shantaram is the first Apple TV series that uses anamorphic lenses and frame in a 2.40 aspect ratio. When shooting the series Duscio pursued smooth camera movement and widescreen anamorphic because in his own words, “I wanted you to fall in love with Bombay, and unashamedly present it in a romantic way." Duscio teamed up with production designer Chris Kennedy (Lion) for visual research into 1980s India. In addition to the novel, inspiration for the visual language and aesthetic came from a plethora of art that included street and fashion photography, National Geographic content, and per Duscio, "feelings of travel, wanderlust and philosophy."

Captured at a pivotal “nothing to lose” moment, for over the course of a year, five family members tired of life with addiction on center stage, each struggle to transcend their crippling histories. Jono McLeod on MY OLD SCHOOL
Jono McLeod on MY OLD SCHOOL
Fact is indeed sometimes stranger than fiction, and such is the case with My Old School. Despite actor Alan Cumming’s top billing, this is really a documentary—and not one about him. The actual subject agreed to be profiled, but declines to appear on camera, so Cumming stands in for him, lip-syncing the testimonial. Around 1993, a pupil known as Brandon Lee pulled an elaborate hoax at the Bearsden Academy in posh suburban Glasgow, Scotland, and created a media circus when he got busted for it two years later. Filmmaker Jono McLeod, who attended Bearsden Academy with Brandon, assembles 30 former classmates and teachers to recount the events of the hoax. Today I’m joined by director Jono to discuss his film. Make sure you check it out in theatres on July 22nd If you would like to support the Following Films Podcast please go to anchor.fm/followingfilms/subscribe

Anthony Hayes on GOLD and FILM CRIB
Thank you for listening to the Following Films podcast. Today I’m joined by Anthony Hayes. I had Anthony on the show to discuss his latest film Gold that he wrote directed and co-stars in with Zac Efron. The film is centered on two drifters traveling through the desert who stumble across the biggest gold nugget ever found,  then the dream of immense wealth and greed takes hold. They hatch a plan to protect and excavate their bounty with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment. The other man remains and must endure harsh desert elements, ravenous wild dogs, and mysterious intruders, battling the sinking suspicion that he has been abandoned to his own fate. Gold is currently available on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital. We also discuss Anthony’s project to support independent filmmakers Film Crib. Film Crib is a platform where filmmakers can share their short films and make money. This is an incredible project that removes the middlemen between artists and commerce.  There is no charge to watch the films and in fact, you can make money by watching films on Film Crib as well. For more information go to filmcrib.io. You will notice that this episode starts with us in mid-conversation. This was an impromptu interview that came up after I tagged Anthony in a post on Twitter. And unfortunately, I didn’t click record until about 20 minutes into our conversation. Ultimately I think it's pretty easy to jump in and pick up on the conversation but it's a bit of an abrupt start. I had a great time chatting with Anthony and highly recommend that you check out Gold and Film Crib. Enjoy the show!

They return to their apartment to pre-game, yet find that their roommate, Carlos (Sebastian Chacon), left the door open. As they enter with trepidation, Sean and Kunle discover a drunk, semi-conscious White female they don’t know on the floor and an oblivious Carlos, who didn’t hear her come in over the videogame blaring in his ears. Michael John Warren on SPRING AWAKENING: THOSE YOU’VE KNOWN
Today I'm joined by Michael John Warren to discuss SPRING AWAKENING: THOSE YOU’VE KNOWN 15 years after the smash, Tony-winning Broadway run of “Spring Awakening,” the original cast and creative team reunite for a spectacular, one-night only reunion concert to benefit The Actors Fund. Chronicling their whirlwind journey back to the stage, the film follows the players as they reconnect and rediscover the beauty and timelessness of the hit musical, sharing the show’s underdog origins, its path to Tony glory, the universal themes of teenage repression and angst, and the unconventional love story of breakout stars Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele. The documentary pulls back the curtain to showcase the reunited original cast and creative team at rehearsals, in their homes and backstage. The film features electrifying performances from the reunion concert in November 2021, newly filmed interviews, candid archival video and photographs, as well as performance footage from the original 2006 show that went on to sweep the Tonys, winning eight awards, including Best Musical. “Spring Awakening” forever changed the lives of the mostly unknown teenage cast and inspired a generation of fans by laying bare taboo issues of teen love, abortion, abuse, sexual identity and suicide in an unapologetic, edgy rock musical set in the 1890s. HBO Documentary Films’ SPRING AWAKENING: THOSE YOU’VE KNOWN , directed by Michael John Warren and produced by RadicalMedia (HBO’s “David Byrne’s American Utopia”), debuts TUESDAY, MAY 3 (9:00-10:23 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Will Smith Assaults Chris Rock - Aron Solomon Provides Legal Insight
Last night at the Oscars, in a truly unprecedented moment, Will Smith left his seat, walked on stage, and hit Chris Rock in the face. While many wondered for a second (including me) whether this all might have been staged, it clearly was not. According to Aron Solomon, chief legal analyst for Esquire Digital, “The question that millions of people are asking today is whether Will Smith’s actions legally constituted assault and battery. While the Oscars are broadcast to a massive audience around the world, they are held in California where assault and battery are, by statute, two different crimes. It is clear that what happened at the Oscars was an assault under the California statutory definition.” Today I’m joined by Aron Solomon to discuss the legal ramifications of last night's Best Actor winner's impulsive reaction to a joke. Thanks to Aron for jumping on this call so quickly and thanks to Fort Worth for letting me use the song.

Voice of Bart Simpson, Nancy Cartwright, on Her New Audio Memoir I’m Still a 10-Year-Old Boy
Voice of Bart Simpson, Nancy Cartwright, on Her New Audio Memoir I’m Still a 10-Year-Old Boy
Nancy Cartwright, the ultimate Simpsons insider, has given voice to the boy immediately recognizable as none other than Bart Simpson for more than 30 years. The Simpsons is the longest running scripted show of all time. In this audio memoir, Nancy traces The Simpsons' rapid rise to wild popularity, offers hilarious anecdotes about cast members and guest stars, and reveals what it’s like to be at the center of an American institution - one that reinvented the sitcom, rocked the networks to the core, and forever changed the face of television. Enhanced with multiple audio clips featuring celebrity cameos on The Simpsons, I’m Still a 10-Year-Old Boy is uniquely suited to the audio experience. Audio cameos included are by Danny DeVito, Elizabeth Taylor, Mickey Rooney, Meryl Streep, Kirk Douglas, J.K. Simmons, and Beverly D’Angelo as well as Simpsons main characters. In I’m Still a 10-Year Old Boy, Cartwright also offers listeners lessons that have contributed to her success as one of the most iconic voice-over actresses including: ·  Do What You Love - if you aren’t making a living by doing what you love, at least do what you like and still do what you love…somehow, somewhere. ·  Be a Professional - A professional, no matter what field, finds out what is needed and wanted. But more importantly, they are the ones who not only get it done, but get it done better than expected. ·  Hitch Your Wagon to a Winner - Whether you are an artist, a contractor, a salesman, a homemaker, or whatever, seek out those around you who are making a better world. ·  Surround Yourself with People Who Love You and Believe in Your Dreams-Do a little “spring cleaning” every now and then. Do I feel better when they are in my company, or do I feel worse? If I feel worse, adios, amigo. If I feel better, they get lunch on me! End of story. ·  Trust Your Instincts—You Are Right - You are the most competent captain for your own ship. Steer well, my friend. ·  You Are Responsible For The Condition You Are In—Good or Bad - You CAN CHANGE your situation and the way you are. And you wanna know how you do that? MAKE THE DECISION TO CHANGE. Created in 1989 by Matt Groening, The Simpsons is long-running (more than 30 years strong, with 706 episodes) and remains a beloved satirical depiction of American life, epitomized by the Simpson family, consisting of Homer, Marge, Lisa, Maggie, and - of course - mischievous, rebellious, irreverent Bart. It continues to offer a biting parody of American culture, society, and television as well as the human condition itself. Nancy Cartwright has voiced Bart Simpson since a version of The Simpsons first appeared on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987. I'm Still A 10-Year-Old Boy is available for pre-order on Audible.

Bernardo Badillo on Emily the Criminal
Bernardo Badillo on Emily the Criminal
Bernardo, a Latin performer of Mexican descent, started acting at his high school in Santa Ana, California, before receiving his B.A. in theater from UCLA, followed by the master’s program at the prestigious Actors Studio Drama School in New York City. Throughout his education he trained under notable teachers such as Moctesuma Esparza, Jose Luis Valenzuela, Jacque Heim at UCLA and Ron Leibman, Barbara Poitier, and Susan Aston among others in New York. Since returning to Los Angeles, he has steadily worked in film, television, commercials, and print. Highlights from his TV career include recurring roles on FX Network’s “Snowfall,” where he was directed by John Singleton, USA Network’s “Queen of the South” as the right-hand man of a drug kingpin and TNT’s “Animal Kingdom.”  He has also guest starred in hit series such as “Dexter,” “Weeds,” “Dead To Me,” and “Insecure,” among others. Upcoming for Bernardo is a role in a new Hulu TV show titled “This Fool,” executive produced by Fred Armisen, premiering summer of 2022. His most notable film role is in the Clint Eastwood directed Warner Bros. film “Sully” starring Tom Hanks. Bernardo trained with a Navy Seal to portray real-life NYPD scuba diver ‘Robert Rodriguez.’ Robert was on the front lines rescuing passengers from the plane once it had safely landed in the Hudson River. Growing up, Bernardo considered himself dramatic and eccentric, participating in numerous school plays and pageants, singing and dancing. That passion turned into a true respect for the craft as a professional. He enjoys putting all the pieces of a character together from body language and speech to the emotional core, studying the script and finding clues to who the character is meant to be. As a Latin actor he is proud to be part of the turning of the tide as Hollywood expands its representation of what it means to be a Latin actor. Outside of acting, he enjoys travelling, having gone to Brazil for the World Cup, backpacked through Spain, and even attended a traveling acting school in Italy. Growing up, books were his escape, and he passes that on by reading to children in his spare time. He is also passionate about workers’ rights and union’s protective services.

SUNDANCE 2022: Barton Cortright on THE CATHEDRAL
SUNDANCE 2022: Barton Cortright on THE CATHEDRAL
Today I had the chance to speak with cinematographer Barton Cortright about his work on the Sundance 2022 film THE CATHEDRAL. Starring Brian d’Arcy James, The Cathedral follows an only child's meditative, impressionistic account of an American family's rise and fall over two decades. It was Bart’s job to work with the film’s director, Ricky D’Ambrose, to create a dark film with natural light to highlight the melancholy feel of the film. Part semi-autobiographical portrait and part-catalog of the objects, people, and moments that characterized some 20 years of America, this film is about growing up on Long Island and family dysfunction. Due to the nature of the film, the majority of it was shot inside a home, making lighting vital to the storytelling. Bart was very selective with the lighting choices as he wanted to make the film look as unlit and natural as possible. As such, he worked closely with his gaffer to ensure all of the light came through lighting sources from outside. Every scene felt like it was lit from natural light coming through the window. The Cathedral premieres at Sundance on January 22, 2022.

David Kaye on Marvels The Eternals, Beast Wars, and X-Men: Evolution
David Kaye on Marvels The Eternals, Beast Wars, and X-Men: Evolution
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe's latest outing has enough outsized star power to go around, one of its sharpest casting decisions had zilch to do with that. For the voice-only role of Arishem the Judge, the Celestial who shepherds the Eternals and sends them on the mission that opens the film, director Chloé Zhao and casting directors Sarah Finn and Anna Tenney made the eminently commendable decision to hire an actual voice actor. And, while this actor may not be as much of a household name as his fellow castmates, he's certainly a superstar in his own field. David Kaye. He's one of the few performers to have played both Optimus Prime and Megatron in some of the Transformers animated shows, while he also lent his voice to both Professor X and Apocalypse in X-Men: Evolution. He's played several more Marvel characters in the past, as well as Clank in the Ratchet & Clank games. He also serves as the announcer for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO.

John Alan Simon & Elizabeth Karr on Dennis Hopper's OUT OF THE BLUE
John Alan Simon & Elizabeth Karr on Dennis Hopper's OUT OF THE BLUE
John Alan Simon & Elizabeth Karr (Discovery Productions) on OUT OF THE BLUE A kind of spiritual sequel (and cautionary counterpoint) to Hopper’s own Easy Rider, OUT OF THE BLUE chronicles the idealism of the sixties decline into the hazy nihilism of the 1980’s. Don Barnes (Dennis Hopper) is a truck driver in prison for drunkenly smashing his rig into a school bus. Linda Manz (Days of Heaven) plays Cebe, his daughter, a teen rebel obsessed with Elvis and The Sex Pistols. Her mother (Sharon Farrell) waitresses, shoots up drugs and takes refuge in the arms of other men. Cebe runs away to Vancouver’s punk scene and ends up on probation under the care of psychiatrist Raymond Burr. After Don’s release, the family struggles to re-connect before the revelation of dark secrets leads to a harrowing conclusion. Working from the original 35mm negative restored by Discovery in 2010, John Alan Simon and Elizabeth Karr’s Discovery Productions undertook the digital scan and mastering of Out of the Blue to premiere as an official selection at the Venice Film Festival in 2019, preserving Hopper’s landmark film to make it available to new audiences. The New 4K restoration is being shown for the first time on the big screen theatrically at Metrograph in November, 2021 in New York. Hallee Adelman on OUR AMERICAN FAMILY
Hallee Adelman on OUR AMERICAN FAMILY
OUR AMERICAN FAMILY is a radically honest, unfiltered portrait of a close-knit Philadelphia family fighting its greatest nemesis: generational addiction. Beginning with a pivotal, “nothing to lose” moment, then captured over the course of the following year, five family members tired of life plagued by addiction on center stage, each struggle to transcend their crippling histories: a mother who learned from childhood to enable her own mother’s addiction, a daughter who doesn’t know who she is without a substance, a son who learned everything about “Heroin 101” from his sister, a younger son who feels alone but acts content to ease the family’s burden, and a stepfather who wonders if addiction is really a disease or simply a by-product of laziness. What will it take to shift this entrenched, wrenching pattern in their lives? How will they each free themselves from their interlocking fates? Will they be able to make significant changes to help their next generation? The members of OUR AMERICAN FAMILY invite us into their lives to find hope and to explore what is possible. No experts. No drug use. No melodrama. To purchase tickets for this weeks screening go to https://filmadelphia.org/events/pff30-our-american-family/

LUZZU with Alex Camilleri and Jesmark Scicluna
LUZZU with Alex Camilleri and Jesmark Scicluna
A hardworking Maltese fisherman, Jesmark is faced with an agonizing choice. He can repair his leaky luzzu – a traditional, multicolored wooden fishing boat – in the hopes of eking out a meager living at sea for his wife and newborn son, just as his father and grandfather did before him. Or he can decommission it in exchange for an EU payout and cast his lot with a sinister black-market operation that is decimating the Mediterranean fish population and the livelihoods of the local families who depend on it. Luzzu won a Sundance Jury Prize for its nonprofessional lead actor Jesmark Scicluna, a real-life Maltese fisherman, and heralds the arrival of writer-director-editor Alex Camilleri. His gripping film operates in the neorealist tradition of Luchino Visconti, Roberto Rosselini, and the Dardenne brothers and calls to mind the work of his mentor Ramin Bahrani (Man Push Cart, The White Tiger), also a producer of the film.

Jessica Devaney on Pray Away
Jessica Devaney on Pray Away
In the 1970s, five men struggling with being gay in their Evangelical church started a Bible study to help each other leave the "homosexual lifestyle." They quickly received over 25,000 letters from people asking for help and formalized as Exodus International, the largest and most controversial conversion therapy organization in the world. But leaders struggled with a secret: their own “same-sex attractions” never went away. After years as Christian superstars in the religious right, many of these men and women have come out as LGBTQ, disavowing the very movement they helped start. Focusing on the dramatic journeys of former conversion therapy leaders, current members, and a survivor, PRAY AWAY chronicles the “ex gay" movement’s rise to power, persistent influence, and the profound harm it causes. Today my guest is the producer of PRAY AWAY Jessica Devaney

Today my guest is Harry Greenberger, the director and writer behind HERE AFTER. The film is a dark fantasy-comedy about searching for love in the afterlife and acts as something of a rorschach test. Depending on how you feel about love, death, and existential dread will greatly impact how you react to this film. It would be easy to see the film as a simple rom-com but I genuinely feel that film has far more on its mind. I highly recommend you check it out this Friday 7/23 when it will be available on VOD. Thanks to Bookmans for sponsoring the show, Footnanny for helping rub my wifes feet, and to Fort Worth for the closing song. I hope you enjoy the show.

Aron Solomon of Today's Esquire on Toxic - The Legal Foundation of the Britney Spears Conservatorship
The legal concept of conservatorship is admittedly not something that often comes across anyone’s social media screens. That all changed last week when Britney Spears, once arguably the most famous celebrity in the world, spoke out in court about what she characterized as a profoundly toxic conservatorship. In a new article published exclusively for Today's Esquire, legal analyst Aron Solomon takes an in-depth look at conservatorships, and the legal rights (or lack thereof) associated with them. This new article can be found here: https://www.todaysesquire.com/2021/07/01/toxic-the-legal-foundation-of-the-britney-spears-conservatorship/

Kevin Corrigan on SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH
Kevin Corrigan on SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH
Today I’m joined by legendary character actor Kevin Corrigan to discuss his latest film SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH. You might know Kevin from his work in GOODFELLAS, TRUE ROMANCE, THE DEPARTED, PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, and the woefully underrated RESULTS. SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH takes place in NYC at the height of the pandemic and focuses on two priests who open their church doors to those seeking salvation during the most isolating of times. From the commonplace to the truly metaphysical, their visitors reflect the full spectrum of personal crises of spirituality. Throughout their encounters with the city's sweetest, wildest and weirdest, the two priests learn the importance of connection, empathy and open-mindedness. While the film takes place in the pandemic, it's not ABOUT the pandemic. It's about asking questions and listening, it's about the importance of fellowship in difficult times. The characters in the film wrestle with universal questions that we have been asking since our earliest days. In that way, I feel like SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH will be the kind of film that audiences will discover for years to come. SCENES FROM AN EMPTY CHURCH will be in theatres and VOD on Friday July 2nd. Big thanks to Bookmans for sponsoring the show. And thanks to Fort Worth for letting me use the song at the end. Richard Armitage on SLEEPWALKER
Richard Armitage on SLEEPWALKER
SLEEPWALKER is the latest film from director Elliott Lester. Troubled by bouts of sleepwalking and disturbing nightmares, graduate student Sarah Foster goes to her university's sleep research center for help. When she wakes up after her first night of being monitored, the world she lives in seems to have changed in subtle, Twilight-Zone-esque ways. In fact, every time she goes to sleep now, she wakes up in a slightly different version of her world. With the help of sleep researcher Dr. Scott White, she tries to work her way back to the reality she started in. But when they finally succeed, it’s revealed that Sarah’s world is not what she thought at all.  Today my guest is one of the stars SLEEPWALKER, Richard Armitage. Tonight we talk about his work on that film as well as his work as Thorin Oakenshiled in The Hobbit Films, as John Proctor in The Crucible, and his upcoming films, OCEANS 8 and the Julie Delpy directed film MY ZOE.  Sleepwalker is Now Available on Digital HD and On Demand Become a Paid Subscriber: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/subscribe

CRUEL SUMMER with Director of Photography Jayson Crothers
CRUEL SUMMER with Director of Photography Jayson Crothers
Thank you for listening to the Following Films podcast. Today my guest is Jayson Crothers. I had Jayson on the show to discuss his work on the hit Freeform series Cruel Summer. The show is told over three summers in the 1990s and is about a girl who goes missing and another who  mysteriously takes over her life. We also discuss our shared love of Battlestar Galactica and Jayson convinces me to take the plunge on 300+ episodes of Supernatural…. Well dip my toes in at the very least. We had some technical issues the first time we recorded so you will notice an abrupt ending in the first half of our conversation. I could have spliced the two pieces together and made the episode feel like it all took place at once but there were about 4 days in  between the two halves that had a slightly different feel. I’d prefer to expose the warts and put out a more honest representation of our conversations. Or I’m lazy and all the “honesty” nonsense is a way to justify my hatred of the editing process. And yet another reason I’d make a terrible filmmaker. But Thomas (Owen Campbell) and his sister Jessie (Ingrid Sophie Schram) are all the family Dwight has left, and as a fiercely private and close-knit family unit, they depend on him and the rituals they've learned in order to keep their secret. Teona Strugar Mitevska on God Exists Her Name is Petrunya
Teona Strugar Mitevska on God Exists Her Name is Petrunya
Today I'm Joined by the director of God Exists Her Name is Petrunya. The film is based on a true story. It takes place in Stip, a small town in Macedonia. Every 19th of January for the holiday of Epiphany, the throwing of the cross event takes place in almost all the Orthodox world of Eastern Europe. The local priest throws a wooden cross into the river and hundreds of men dive after it. Good fortune and prosperity are guaranteed to the man who retrieves it. This time, the young woman Petrunya dives into the water on a whim and manages to grab the cross before the others. Her competitors are furious, the local population as well as religious establishments are outraged as women aren’t allowed to take part in the ritual.  All hell breaks loose, but Petrunya holds her ground. The next day, in an interview to the local television station she encourages more women to jump for the cross in the future. She is labelled by the population as a "crazy/disturbed/troubled" young woman. God Exists Her Name is Petrunya will be in theatres and virtual cinemas on June 25th. If you happen to live in NY or LA try to see this in a theatre, obviously if you are comfortable, if you have your shot and haven’t been to the cinema in awhile I can’t think of a better way to jump back in.
