Football South Coast

The consistent wet weather has seen Ian McLennan Park, the only synthetic pitch in the region used extensively so far in 2022. The ground has hosted a full round of Men's Premiership games on the one day with a Super Saturday concept on two occasions. This week, Tim Gibson speaks with FSC CEO Ann-Marie Balliana to discuss the project at Ian McLennan Park and how the pitch is being utilised. 

This week Tim Gibson speaks with Wollongong Olympic's new signing Tynan Diaz. Diaz has had a great start to the season with Olympic including scoring the winner last weekend against Woonona at Ian McLennan Park. 

This week Tim Gibson sits down with senior referee Brendon Fotheringham to discuss the new interpretations of the Laws of the Game for this season. We also look at what undergarments and jewellery players can wear on the pitch. 

This is the first of a new interview-based series looking at key themes and issues within the Illawarra football community. In this episode, Tim Gibson sits down with competition coordinator Bobby Mazevski to discuss this season's changes to competition structure and registration requirements.

In a special extra episode of Away from the pitch, we talk with former Illawarra Premier League star Robbie Shields. 

The Irish goal-getter lit up local football with Wollongong United winning back-to-back George Naylor Medals in 2013 and 2014.

Shields discusses his career before moving to Australia which included spells at some of Ireland's biggest clubs as well as time with former English heavyweights Leeds United.

In the 18th and final episode of Away from the pitch, we speak with Illawarra Premier League icon Alvin Ceccoli.

The six-time IPL winner discusses his time with the Wollongong Wolves and Sydney FC which saw him take out NSL and A-League titles.

Ceccoli goes over his storied time in the local top-flight where he's played for Dapto, Dandaloo, Dapto Dandaloo Fury, Kemblawarra Fury, Wollongong United and Corrimal.

The defender also opens up about his frustrations with the national team, for whom he's capped six times, as well as potential retirement and his footballing career after he hangs up his boots.

In episode 17 of Away from the pitch, we chat with Helensburgh coach Brad Boardman.

The 2009 NSW NPL 1 player of the season discusses his impressive career which saw him shine in the in the state's top flight as well as the Illawarra Premier League.

Boardman discusses his transition into coaching and the role his father and successful coach, Norm, has played in his career.

The former goal-scoring ace also opens up about how joining the Gerringong Breakers late in his career reignited his love for the game.

In episode 16 of Away from the pitch, show host Dylan Arvela gets on the other side of the mic to discuss his journalism career.

Arvela has been at the forefront of Football South Coast's media coverage by playing an important role in initiatives such as the FSC Weekly podcast and live streamed matches.

Arvela explains how his experience with FSC helped him step into full-time journalism roles in Victoria and why he's returned to the Illawarra.

In episode 15 of Away from the pitch, we chat with Wollongong Olympic defender Mark Every.

The Englishman discusses his transition to centreback from further up the park as well as his success across Wollongong United, Albion Park White Eagles and Wollongong Olympic.

Every also talks about the support of his dad, Andy, who 'made' him fall in love with the game and continues to go from ground to ground to watch his son play.

In episode 14 of Away from the pitch, we are joined by former George Naylor Medalist Vaughan Patterson.

The imposing midfielder has been a part of some of the best sides in the Illawarra Premier League having featured in five grand finals in eight seasons.

Patterson discusses the being on the right and wrong end of the result in the big games as well as his 2020 transfer to Bellambi.

Goodchild is one of the Illawarra Premier League's most recognised names having been a star figure at Bulli, Wollongong United and Tarrawanna during the past decade.

The talismanic midfielder discusses the influence Adrian Alston had on his career as well as playing out his 'best years' at Tarrawanna.

In episode 11 of Away from the pitch, we speak with Bulli goalkeeper and Talk2MeBro ambassador Ben McGinnes.

The custodian opens up about the role suicide and mental health has played in his life and how he's looked to make a difference through the #talk2mebro campaign.

McGinnes also discusses starting his career at Woonona before moving to rivals Bulli as well as his season with Coniston which saw the club earn promotion to the Illawarra Premier League.

In episode 10 of Away from the pitch, we are joined by South Coast Flame goalkeeper and captain Matt White.

White overcame Leukaemia before carving out a playing career which saw him become Flame's inaugural skipper. 

The number one opens up about his journey which has also seen him represent the Australian First Nations side.

In episode 10 of Away from the pitch, we talk football with University captain Elise Battin.

Battin started in the senior ranks in her mid-teens with Culburra and Southern Branch before moving to the Illawarra and the Women's Division 1.

The creative midfielder discusses her time at the top with Tarrawanna as well as her rapidly improving Uni side.

In episode nine of Away from the pitch, we speak with Central Coast Mariners striker Jordan Murray.

Murray is a prime example of the pathway from grassroots football to the professional game with the goal-getter making his senior debut for Bulli in 2012.

Murray would move onto the Wollongong Wolves and APIA Leichhardt and while at the latter in 2018 he broke the NSW NPL 1 goal-scoring record with 23 goals in 19 games.

The number 9 opens up about the people who have had a strong influence on his career including his dad and former NSL player, Peter. 

Murray also discusses adapting to professional football as well his career highlights to date.

In episode eight of Away from the pitch, we are joined by Wollongong United goalkeeper Sam Nastic.

Nastic burst into the Illawarra Premier League as a teenager in 2013 and has been one of the competition's best goalkeepers in the seasons since.

The shot-stopper discusses some of the intricacies of goalkeeping, his stint with Marconi and suffering grand final heartbreak.

In episode seven of Away from the pitch, we are joined by veteran referee Bobby Mazevski. 

Mazevski began officiating local football in the late 1980s and has become one of the region's most noteworthy whistleblowers, taking charge of seven Illawarra Premier League deciders.

Mazevski discusses the highs and lows of his career as well as some of the changes he has seen over the decades.

On episode six of Away from the pitch, we are joined by twins Marcus and Joel Beattie.

The boys discuss growing up together with a ball at their feet as well as their experience representing the University of Wollongong at the FISU World Cup.

Marcus speaks of his tremendous time at Bulli which proved a launchpad to transfers to NPL2 side St George FC before signing for NPL champions the Wollongong Wolves.

Joel goes over his time in the English non-league system which led to his chance at becoming a key figure for the Albion Park White Eagles.

In episode five of Away from the pitch, we speak with Tarrawanna stalwart Matt Naylor.

The seasoned defender discusses his early career with the Blueys before moving the Balls Paddock under then Bulli coach Adrian Alston

Naylor talks about his time playing in England as well as being a part of five unsuccessful grand final tilts.
