Viva - Genevieve Mary Mawdsley . April 2023 Ince Blundell 1930s with 6 Brothers and Sisters

Living in Ince Blundell in the 1920s 1930s until 2000.
Viva was born in 1925. She chatted about growing up with her family. She is one of 6 brothers and sisters.

She described the family house. Three bedrooms one for the boys one for the girls and one for Viva’s parents.

The toilet is always an interesting subject for me. In 1928 Viva and her family had 2 toilets - situated at the bottom of the garden. The family toilet would have been two seats were cut into a plank of wood. Not flushed away all toilet contents were caught in a bucket - which was then distributed around the garden as food for the plants. - Here you can here Joan - born in 1935, saying her father had the best Rhubarb in Altcar. - All fed by toilet waste .
Bottoms were wiped on newspaper pieces .

Cooking for a family of 8 possibly 9 as Viva’s grandmother lived locally . Was done on a range - Viva’s mother lit this every day. It was in the main living sitting room.

The family kitchen was for preparing meals - vegetables, meat, and would of have a tap for cold water. The kitchen also contained a handy bath in the corner. Perfect for 6 children.

Viva laughs at her own stories as she recounts schooling, ploughing fields, life with six siblings

Here Dr Phil Smith shares in intricate knowledge of insects .
We explore questions - why does it matter that a Tiger beetle on Formby Dunes disappears.

His stories of biological control are quite staggering. Quite incredible.

Why have the government allowed pesticides that alter Bees behaviour, banned in the EU.
Now in England it has been reintroduced to help farmers grow oil seed rape.
Oil seed rape why should I care - well you will find it is used in cooking oil. You will have it in the kitchen . Restaurants take aways will cook in it / with it .

Capturing Sounds of Spring on a Northern English Farm. A latch opens the gate the door. Food pellets drop into a bucket. Water buckets are filled. Lambs bleat, ewes baa, cattle moo, a tractor purrs as it drops of the day’s provisions, the quad bike buzzes round to inspect the sheep as they wait to lamb, the snowdrops are out in their thousands, sunny yellow straw swishes as feet walk by. The Oxford Black pig calls to her piglets - unbelievably cute. The swollen river rushes past, hens toot at their piggy visitors, sparrows trill and crows caw in the distance, the Royal Mail delivery arrives, spring breeze and sunshine make the grass grow. #spring #newlife #relaxation

Relaxation Frogs Spring sounds. All the words have been removed from this version for your enjoyment . Frog chorus captured on 17th March 2023, Freshfield Formby Merseyside, UK Our first lunch outside on sunny St Patrick’s day 17 March 2023. We have 2 ponds in the garden. One has a sunny aspect. The other enjoys a shaded position next to a large Cyprus tree. A new rain water system introduced recently captures fresh rain water and feeds the ponds filling them with fresh rain water. Solving our leaking pond problem. One frog floats alone in the newly topped up shaded pond. The sunny pond has a chorus of 20 frogs some floating, some sitting on the piles of frog spawn that have only recently been laid. (see photo). This recording captures the frogs welcoming the arrival of the female frogs. The female frogs have returned to lay their eggs - frogspawn. No female frogs were moved but it will be interesting to see how long it takes or if any female goes for the replenished shaded pond . The shaded pond currently only attracts frogs on hot summer days . These confident little frogs liked being photographed. They were brave not moving for any one. The dog was fascinated by them. ……. …….. ……… ………. ………. .. If you have a story or voice you would like to be recorded email Formby Podcast …………………………………. Formby Podcast @ gmail. com

The Mexico a vivid description of the last few hours of the Mexico in December 1886.

This is the story of the Mexico Set in 1886 this is story of the greatest loss of Lifeboat Crew the RNLI has ever known. The Mexico was built in 1860 the story begins at her birth in a Sunderland ship yard in 1860. It ends with loss in the Irish Sea off the Southport Formby coast in December 1886. The Mexico began her days called The John Bull . She had no engine, she was a three mast sailing ship. Renamed the Mexico in 1881. She was a cargo ship. She arrived in Liverpool in 1886 and following an inspection in a dry dock. She was passed to sail. The voyage was to take cargo to Ecuador. She left Liverpool with an experienced captain who had sailed her for many years. This story is beautifully written. A vivid description of the last few hours of the Mexico in December 1886. The crew of the Mexico were rescued by the Lytham Lifeboat Crew. The team that delivered the lecture was Semper Fidelis lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 880 in the register of Mark Lodges. Narrator : Godfrey Hirst The recording was made at Southport Temperance Lodge. Southport Temperance Lodge hosted Masons from Lytham & St Anne's Lodges in Southport Masonic Hall. On 9th February 2023 Free Mason Lodges are massive fundraisers giving donations each year to charity. They have given thousands of pounds to local lifeboat associations to buy new boats. Thank you to Paul Dwan for a fascinating evening of local history. Learning another story of local bravery. And also for an informative tour Southport Masonic Lodge, taking time to explain how Masonic Lodges function. Fascinating, informative, and delicious food. Capturing Voices Jane Kwok, Wu Ming Ting / Lisa Clayson

The story of Jane Kwok
Chinese name Wu Ming Ting.
Born Shanghai 1928
She is 94 years old.
Formby Podcast interviewed at her home in Crosby November 2022.

Jane was one of 6 children, girls and boys, born and raised in Shanghai during a time of massive cultural change and unrest in China.

Educated in speaking 5 different languages - regional dialects from China, Mandarin, Cantonese, English and French, Lucy got a job working with China National Aviation Corporation as an air hostess. During her travels with the job she met her husband and moved to the UK living in Crosby. Working, caring for family, bringing up 4 girls.

China was ruled one family during the Qing Dynasty from 1643 - 1912.

In 1900, China’s glory days were behind her. China was a nation in decline. In 1900, China was heavily controlled by foreign nations who tended to dominate the ports such as Shanghai. China was ruled by the Qing family, though the family is better known as the Manchu’s.

1912 - 1949 Chinese Republic was formed.

1949, Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong declared the creation of the People's Republic of China. Communism crept over China.

Jane’s memory of her mother was that she could not walk.

Foot binding had began and became a fashion in China’s educated soceity in the 1200s .
Binding girls feet is one of the most vivid images from China.
The culture of foot binding girl’s feet was a custom demanded by society.

“In Chinese society, it was the only way forward for women,” says Farrell. “They did it because they thought it would give them a better future, a better life.” Jo Farrell - photography published in The Guardian written by Jack Mills The Guardian Mon 15 Jun 2015 02.00 EDT

The photographer Jo Farrell tracked down 50 surviving women whose feet had been bound. Many could no longer walk, and kept their disfigurement hidden. Her images reveal the survivors’ strength, determination – and hope
Unbound: China’s last ‘lotus feet’ – in pictures

Foot binding was embedded in Chinese Culture - Jo Farrell reports - ‘Guo’s mother was unwilling to bind her feet, so at the age of 15 she bound her own. She had watched how her own mother did it and copied her. All her small toes are broken underneath the sole, but ultimately she didn’t manage to reduce the length of the feet.Jo Farrell

www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2015/jun/15/the-last-women-in-china-with-bound-feet

How were the feet bound?

Foot binding, or footbinding, was the Chinese custom of breaking and tightly binding the feet of young girls in order to change their shape and size. Feet altered by footbinding were known as lotus feet, and the shoes made for these feet were known as lotus shoes. www.wikipedia.org

Why did the Chinese stop foot binding?
From www.britannica.com › science
Opposition to the practice became more widespread when missionaries to China argued that it was cruel; missionaries also pointed out that the rest of the world looked down on it. After the Nationalist Revolution in 1911, footbinding was outlawed in 1912.Oct 10, 2022

Sand Winning Formby Sand was a valuable mineral used in Industry during the 1900s Dr Phil Smith

Sand Winning Formby Sand was a valuable mineral used in Industry during the 1900s Dr Phil Smith

"Sand-winning: Memories of sand-winning (or sand-mining) on the Sefton Coast are fading but it was a major industry for about 60 years. Hundreds of thousands of tonnes were taken from the sand-dunes and beaches, ending in 1970. In places, coastal defences were weakened, this being one of the reasons why it stopped.

The sand was used for casting in metal foundries, for glass-making and even for filling sand-bags in Liverpool at the start of World War II. The remains of enormous sand-quarries can still be seen if you know where to look." Formby Podcast would like to thank Dr Phil Smith for sharing his story. If you have a question or a story. Scouts in Formby - 4th Formby Holy Trinity Scouts Podcast recorded 3 November 2022 in Formby

This is 4th Formby Scouts and we meet at Holy Trinity Workshop, Formby, on a Thursday evening, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.

In this episode we made a podcast - interviewing the leaders and the scouts.

I enjoy the many hikes and camps across the year and it is generally just a good experience.

Because I like fires and in Scouts you make a lot of fire also the camps are fun especially when your with your mates. The scouts worked brilliantly together as a team. They took photos, recorded individually in small groups, recorded as a group. Sorted the hashtags and wrote the podcast notes. Podcast Notes

Sand-Where does it come from? Long Shore Drift Sand Lizards newts Dr Phil Smith Make your own Record

Sand-Where does it come from? Long Shore Drift Sand Lizards newts Dr Phil Smith Make your own Record

Formby Sand Dunes are made of sand. You walk over the sand dunes to get onto Formby beach.

But where does each grain of sand come from ?

In this podcast Dr Phil Smith tells all, in ways we can all understand .

Sand is washed in from deposits in the Irish Sea. After it arrives on Formby beach, some is blown up to form dunes and some is washed north or south by long-shore drift.

Before the Second World War in the 1930s until the mid 1970s an industry began in Formby called Sand Winning - lorry loads of sand taken from the dunes and sold for industry - glass making.

During the Second World War Formby people made bags and filled them with sand - sand bags .

Dr Phil Smith talks about how
Sand comes from in from the sea. Every grain of sand on the Sefton Coast arrives on the beach at Formby Point and is moved / blown to Ainsdale and Hightown by a process know as Long Shore Drift

Did you know how old Formby’s Sand Dunes are? Dr Phill Smith talks about the age of Formby’s Dunes. Discovered from research, we know the sand dunes in 2022 are 400 years old.

In this podcast we hear about how Formby’s Sand Lizards are rare and protected by law. We have them on the Formby sand-dunes. In the breeding season, males are brilliant green. They probably arrived here thousands of years ago.

Snakes last seen in the area in the 1700s. None now apart from escaped pets.

Common Lizards are smaller and more often seen than Sand Lizards.

We also have two kinds of newts. These are amphibians that breed in water but spend most of their time on land, including in gardens.

Would you like to make a record of what’s in your garden?
You could press leaves and look them up. You could take photos . Put them all in a book, look them up and label them

Climate Change How wildlife is being affected on Formby’s Sand Dunes Natterjack toads dune greening

Climate Change Formby Dunes 2022
By Dr Phil Smith

A fascinating conversation on the effects of climate change on Formby wildlife and where they live.

Hot summers and lower rainfall is welcomed by some of us and helps if you are a plume-horn hoverfly invading from the south. It's not so good if you need wetlands for breeding, like the Natterjack Toad and lots of other insects, for which our sand-dunes are famous.

Warmer temperatures also help invasive plants grow over the dunes; bad news for many creatures, including the Sand Lizard, that depend on bare sand for their livelihoods.
