Design Diary Sept 4, 2019 - "Black & White"

Sometimes things aren't always black and white, sometimes they are.

In this Design Diary, I talk about why I feel it's important to maintain a dialogue with the people who support my work.

I was working on those new, 3-D styled, more realistic looking dungeons. When I showed them off to a friend of mine, his response in seeing them was not what I expected. His first response was, "Are you going to do black and white versions too?"

Am I really that out of touch with what the gaming community wants?

Today as I was listening to the latest "into the Pit" episode from Spike pit, I found myself asking, "What makes a good starter set?"

The one where I ask, "How much information do I really need to run a successful adventure?"

I love using published adventures but one of the things that frustrates me about them is the amount of prep that I need to do when I'm getting ready to run a game, but for the most part, there's a limited amount of information that you need for running the game at the table. Does a published adventure need to have a high word count or could an adventure really just be a series of notes?

The one where I go green? No not THAT Green.

In today's microburst I talk about recycling. I'm not "cheap", I'm frugal, and today I am repurposing an old iPhone to record this microburst while on the road. As a result, I'm asking myself how much material is ok to reuse from one product to another?

The one where we play Raiders of the Forgotten Treasure

In today's microburst I play Swords & Wizardry Light with my kids. As a result of a comment from Tim Shorts of Gothridge Manor, my son decided to finally after 4 years run the adventure he wrote when he was 7. This is part 1 of an actual play recording of that game. The one where I ask, "How do I compress 8-24 hours of adventure material down to 3?"

Phoenix Comic Fest is coming up and I have an adventure to run. When I wrote Heart of Darkness it was intended as a Sci-fi gothic horror dungeon crawl, now I have to take the best parts and run it in a 2.5-3 hour time slot. Can it be done? 2.5D or not 2.5D that is the question I have been asking myself these past few weeks. In today's microburst I think out loud about the best wall and tile system for my game style.
