Fashion: Why is the Basque beret a French cliché?
🧑‍🎨 Today marks the first day of the Paris Women’s Fashion Week. A great opportunity to talk a bit about the famous Basque beret, that hat worn by every stereotyped French person. How did a woolen hat made by and for Béarn shepherds in the Pyrenees became Basque? Then a French symbol? And how did it eventually evolve as far as Argentina and the Far East? The answer is simple: amazing versatility. 🔗 ManuFrance: https://www.manufrance.fr/actualite/lhistoire-du-beret-entre-tradition-et-symbole-francais 📕 Courrier international n° 1497 (11-17 juillet 2019): La fantastique histoire du béret basque 🎵 Soundtrack: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6i4JjGSsId4CCCVkJuwLHa?si=K0d8KhxkSqqAPq8_kw5XqQ ☝️ If you enjoyed this episode, please consider: - supporting on https://www.patreon.com/frenchconversationgroup or https://anchor.fm/frenchconversationgroup - subscribe and share 🇫🇷 French Conversation Group meets weekly in Los Angeles, New York or online. History: The race to decipher hieroglyphs
📜 Here is the story of a person who spent every single minute of his time reading books, learning languages and trying to solve the mystery of the Egyptian hieroglyphs. Food: The croissant, and how it evolved
🥐 How could such a small thing have so much history and generate so much love? Simply by being irresistible. From the medieval bakeries of Vienna, to a small patisserie in Paris, to the White House (RIP Roland Mesnier: https://www.washingtonpost.com/obituaries/2022/08/27/roland-mesnier-pastry-chef-white-house-dead/), the croissant made it to my personal breakfast routine. Music: Sax and the city
🎷 If we had to decide which is the suavest musical instrument, the saxophone would certainly be in the top 5. With its warm sound resemblant the human voice, it conquered the hearts of people all around the world, in almost all musical genres. 🎩 When the cinematic worlds of Jacques Tati (Mon Oncle) and Sylvain Chomet (Les Triplettes de Belleville: https://youtu.be/6q1E_zwXlUM) meet, there is something special that happens. Having tackled so many aspects of French life with great humor and kindness, his drawings made it to the bookshelves of many people who will remember him forever with wistful nostalgia. Art: Jan van Eyck's THE ARNOLFINI PORTRAIT (1434)
🕯 In 1434, Bruges (in the Duchy of Burgundy back then) was home to one of the most important Flemish Masters, Jan van Eyck. Even though little is known about him and his work, he left us enough material to spend hours investigating it. Literature: Little Prince, big adventure
⭐️ If you'd like to start reading French literature, this is a great beginning. Eighty years ago, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry wrote a short novel for children combining poetry and philosophy, "Le Petit Prince". Since then, the tale has been translated in several hundred languages, making it the most translated book in the world after the Bible. Feel free to read it in your language first to grasp all the symbolism, then read it in French to seize its original poetry. 🔗 "Le Petit Prince" in French: https://www.ebooksgratuits.com/pdf/st_exupery_le_petit_prince.pdf 🎵 Soundtrack: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6i4JjGSsId4CCCVkJuwLHa?si=K0d8KhxkSqqAPq8_kw5XqQ ☝️ If you enjoyed this episode, please consider: - supporting on https://www.patreon.com/frenchconversationgroup or https://anchor.fm/frenchconversationgroup - subscribe and share 🇫🇷 French Conversation Group meets weekly in Los Angeles, New York or online. 🌍 This translation of a Polish article (https://www.courrierinternational.com/article/vu-de-varsovie-exercices-militaires-en-bielorussie-la-pologne-raison-davoir-peur) explains how the country is rightfully concerned about the current Russia/Ukraine tensions. Coincidentally, it is in the same region, about 135 years, ago that Dr. Esperanto tried to prevent such tensions by inventing a universal language. Art: Paul Gauguin, the rebel at the end of the world
🖼 Well known for his lifestyle and his rebel behavior (both in life and in art), Paul Gauguin sailed away from Europe, leaving five children behind, to start a new life in Tahiti. History: Bougainville, the explorer
🧭 What best to start the year than a topic covering so many themes? Bougainville was an explorer from the 18th century. Aboard his ship, he became the first Frenchman to sail around the world and discover Tahiti. To this day, we know his name mostly thanks to a flower he brought back to France: the bougainvillea. But a flower wasn’t the only thing he brought back: knowledge, science, discoveries and social controversies accompanied him along. 🔗 "Bougainville trouve l’éden au bout du monde" in Histoire & Civilisations: https://www.histoire-et-civilisations.com/thematiques/epoque-moderne/bougainville-trouve-leden-au-bout-du-monde-78898.php 🎬 Documentary on Arte: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMMJimXGslg ☝️ If you enjoyed this episode, please consider: - supporting on https://www.patreon.com/frenchconversationgroup or https://anchor.fm/frenchconversationgroup - subscribe and share 🇫🇷 French Conversation Group meets weekly in Los Angeles, New York or online.
