Narcissism or Emotional Immaturity? - with Tony Overbay - Episode 237

Narcissism has gained momentum in everyday conversation. While many individuals exhibit varying degrees of narcissistic tendencies, true Narcissistic Personality Disorder needs much more attention and diagnosing than a mere accusation. In this episode we welcome Tony Overbay to discuss the difference between emotional immaturity and narcissism. Join us as we break down both and the importance of understanding narcissism, emotional immaturity, and the challenges they present in relationships. We also discuss the impact of confabulation and gaslighting in relationships, where one partner may manipulate or distort reality to maintain a sense of control or avoid accountability. Tony emphasizes the significance of self-awareness, self-care, and setting boundaries as essential steps for individuals dealing with narcissistic behavior in their partners.

The Importance of Men's Work - with Kurt Francom - Episode 236

The Importance of Men's Work - with Kurt Francom - Episode 236

One of the biggest casualties men experience, often when they are boys, is getting separated from their own hearts and living life on autopilot. Addictions, trauma, abandonment, and other challenges can create more separation and make it difficult for men to feel alive and energized. It can also make it difficult to connect to themselves, to God, and their most important relationships. We invited Kurt Francom, a board member of the non-profit men's organization, "Warrior Heart", to join us for a discussion on how men can find their hearts and re-energize their lives. This is a great discussion to listen to whether or not you're a man. We all have men in our lives who, as Kurt says, "Need permission to not need permission to reclaim their own hearts." We'd love to hear what you think of this interview!

Communication in a marriage or committed relationship isn't always easy, especially in the aftermath of betrayal. We've invited fellow therapist Nathaniel Gustafson to teach us more about the four levels of communication and how to improve your ability to build a stronger connection. We make a special emphasis on how this can help men, who are often socialized to avoid anything emotional, deepen their ability to connect with their partner. Listen to this great discussion and make sure to follow the guidelines in his infographic so you can improve your connection with your partner.

Transactional vs. Transformational Relationship Dynamics - with Julia Witt - Episode 234

Transactional vs. Transformational Relationship Dynamics - with Julia Witt - Episode 234

We've invited Julia Witt to join us for a great discussion on transactional versus transformational relationships. Geoff discovered Julia when someone sent him a Tik Tok video of her discussing this topic. He knew he had to invite her to share more with our community. Transactional relationship dynamics are so common, especially in couples healing from broken trust. So many guys who are trying to rebuild trust want to do the right things, but then inadvertently create a dynamic that creates more resentment. We discuss how to challenge this dynamic and create a more transformational relationship for long-term recovery.

Taking Ownership of Our Stories - with Jason Portnoy - Episode 233

Taking Ownership of Our Stories - with Jason Portnoy - Episode 233

In this episode we are joined by Jason Portnoy, who wrote a memoir called “Silicon Valley Porn Star”. Jason shares his personal journey of addiction, infidelity, and self-discovery. We discuss the importance of surrendering and taking responsibility for unhealthy patterns in order to heal, grow, and overcome addiction. As with any personal recovery story, please recognize that comparisons and criticism are normal reactions, as you may not agree with or do some of the same things he and his wife have done in their journey. As the famous 12-step saying goes, "Take what you need and leave the rest for someone else." We hope this interview helps strengthen your resolve to live a life of integrity and stay in the light.

He served as the first Chief Financial Officer of Palantir Technologies (NYSE: PLTR) and later founded Oakhouse Partners, a top-performing venture capital firm. In his own words:"I had a life many men dream of: money, titles, cars, women. Then one day it all came crashing down, and I realized that deep inside I was miserable, lonely, and scared. Where did I go wrong? A lifetime of messages from society told me if I had those things I’d be a “real man” and happy.

It was all a lie.

After years of intense work and study, I learned I couldn’t find happiness in material possessions or validation from society. It only existed inside of myself. In my book, I share the story of how it happened: my rise, my fall, and my redemption."

Worthiness vs. Trust - Episode 232

Worthiness vs. Trust - Episode 232

In this episode we discuss the topic of rebuilding trust and healing from betrayal. The concepts of 'worthiness' and 'trust' often get confused, and it is extremely important to maintain a clear distinction. 'Worthiness' is someone's inherent human value, which is unchangeable regardless of their actions, while 'trust' is about behavior patterns, competencies, values, and is earned by consistency and reliability. Join me as we caution against conflating these issues, as it can create confusion, suffering, and derail the recovery process.

We invited marriage and family therapist, Amanda Christensen, to talk with us about the importance of healing rituals in healing from betrayal.

Affair-Proofing Your Relationship - with Shannon Brown, LMFT - Episode 229

Most couples never imagine they could find themselves in the crisis of an extramarital affair. The slope is slippery and every couple is at risk for infidelity issues unless they have intentionality and boundaries around their marriage.

We are joined in this episode by Shannon Brown, a licensed marriage and family therapist, who specializes in affair recovery. We discuss the risk factors couples should be aware of when protecting their marriage from infidelity. The majority of affairs in marriage begin with familiarity and emotional connection. We want to help couples understand these risk factors and work together to strengthen their affair-proofing efforts. When the Betrayed Become Abusive - Episode 224

Sometimes betrayed partners struggle to manage the anger resulting from trauma and stay stuck in verbal and emotional abusive patterns toward their partner. For safety and other reasons, it is vital to take important steps toward interrupting and healing these patterns for both partners. In this episode I address a specific question from a viewer who finds herself in this dilemma over a year after she confessed to betraying her husband early on in their marriage.

The History of Addiction - with Dr. Carl-Erik Fisher - Episode 223

The History of Addiction - with Dr. Carl-Erik Fisher - Episode 223

In this episode, we're going to take a broader look at the history of addiction to better understand how we see this universal human struggle. We're featuring an interview we did with Dr. Carl Erik Fisher from Columbia University and author of the book, "The Urge: Our History of Addiction."

Even though Dr. Fisher approaches this topic from the lens of substance abuse, there are parallels for all addictive and compulsive behaviors. As you listen to this interview and read his book, please recognize that this doesn't mean you need to suddenly drop your boundaries, make excuses, or allow harmful behaviors to continue. His validation of the human struggle isn't permission for engaging in harmful behaviors without consequences. We found this discussion enlightening, expansive, and compassionate.

Understanding Men, Lust, and Marriage - Episode 222

Sexual drive is something all humans and animals were created with, but as humans where does the natural instinct end and the conscious care and concern for a partner begin? In this episode, we address a listener's question about the portrayal of male struggle with lust and its impact on a wife's sense of safety and cherishedness. We discuss the cultural messages surrounding male sexuality and the importance of self-restraint in healthy societies. Authenticity in Recovery - Episode 221

Authenticity in Recovery - Episode 221

Over the many years of helping couples and individuals overcome addiction and betrayal, I’ve noticed it can be extremely difficult for the partner who betrayed trust to be able to confidently live authentically. Coming from a space of hiding, lying, and posing as something or someone they are not, to confronting their true feelings and behaviors can be terrifying for both the betrayer and the betrayed. Join us as we discuss helpful ways to live authentically while being conscious of the triggers that it may present for both partners.

Why Do I Feel Worse When We Get Closer? - Episode 219

Why Do I Feel Worse When We Get Closer? - Episode 219

Healing from sexual betrayal in a relationship is not a linear process. Through the ups and downs both individuals may see glimpses of safety and security, while at other times vulnerability and fear. In this episode I address the feelings that can come when it seems like the relationship is healing, yet the feelings of happiness may trigger shame, uncertainty, and cause a backslide in progress. Join me as I share ways for both the betrayed and the betrayer to process these emotions, and find ways to continue the progression in healing.

The Difference Between a Passive or Proactive Recovery - Episode 217

The Difference Between a Passive or Proactive Recovery - Episode 217

During the process of recovering from betrayal trauma, couples will often find themselves in a passive or proactive state. In this episode we discuss how those who have betrayed trust are usually playing offense or defense as they work to rebuild trust. While both scenarios may include steps forward and not acting out anymore, both vary widely on the impact they have on the betrayed partner and their sense of safety and trust.

What's Hijacking So Many Beautiful Relationships? - with Dr. Jacob Hess - Episode 213

What's Hijacking So Many Beautiful Relationships? - with Dr. Jacob Hess - Episode 213

Dr. Jacob Hess wrote an article in Public Square magazine that challenged the belief that we should abandon marriage if we're not feeling romantic or loving feelings for our spouse. He said that many of these marriages are not only worth saving, but are completely able to be saved. We invited him to join us on the podcast to talk about his perspective on how most marriages can be healed, even when they have serious challenges. In this episode, we discuss:

  • The origins of this article and why this topic matters so much to him

  • How this applies to couples who have experienced serious attachment injuries

  • What couples can do to practice love when they're on the brink of divorce

A Better Approach to Sexual Brokenness in Our Churches

A Better Approach to Sexual Brokenness in Our Churches

Although church is a place for imperfect people to go to become better, sometimes we find it hard to be accepted there through our own trials and imperfections, especially in the case of sexual brokenness. Today Daniel Weiss joins us to discuss how clergy and members of congregations can better approach this struggle and come together to help foster healing and acceptance. In this episode we cover:

  • What do you see as God's design for healthy sexuality?

  • How is this being distorted culturally?

  • What do you mean when you say we're all sexually broken?

  • How do you see us responding to this in unhealthy ways?

  • What are the healthiest ways to respond to our own and other's sexual brokenness?

  • How can we talk about sexual brokenness without inducing unhealthy levels of shame?

  • How are you helping clergy teach and minister around these sensitive topics?

Is My Partner an Addict or Just Being a Jerk? - Episode 200

Is My Partner an Addict or Just Being a Jerk? - Episode 200

Working through betrayal trauma brings up a lot of unknowns in a relationship. One of the most common questions is if the betrayer has the capacity and the willingness to change, or if they are tied to a compulsive or addictive behavior that is beyond conquering. In this episode we discuss each label and how at the end of the day, while each may give different connotations about the intent of betrayal, both have the ability to change.

In this episode we discuss the term ‘malicious compliance’, and how that can play out in a recovery dynamic. Join us as we discuss the natural, reflexive responses to requests and how to transform those into a more mature, self-reflective response to benefit the relationship.

Decreasing Chaos in Recovery - Episode 197

Decreasing Chaos in Recovery - Episode 197

With an increase of activities, over-scheduling, and an overall feeling of “busy-ness”, our lives already seem full to the brim. When a betrayal or other traumatic event occurs, how do we fit in the time and effort to prioritize that recovery while moving on with the demands of every-day life? In this episode we discuss the necessity of slowing down and editing out the less important tasks in our schedules to open up time to properly address, grieve, recover, and heal from a betrayal.

Balancing Positivity and Negativity - Episode 196

Balancing Positivity and Negativity - Episode 196

We hear a lot of talk about “toxic” positivity versus being real, vulnerable, and open about our struggles and emotions. It can be hard to know how to balance the two vastly different emotions, especially when self-regulation has been damaged by trauma. In this episode we discuss the need for balancing the positivity and negativity in our lives and how having movement between both can actually make life richer and more well-rounded.

Drama Bonding - Episode 195

Drama Bonding - Episode 195

Relationship bonds come in all shapes and sizes. Friendships, acquaintances, family members, and intimate partners all have different levels of connection and familiarity that they are built upon. In this episode we specifically discuss the bonding that occurs when the focus is on the drama or superficial aspects of everyday life and how that can often quickly become a substitute for deeper connection and intimacy. While there is nothing inherently wrong with anything that connects people together in their interests, we give suggestions on how to use those lighter, superficial conversations to form deeper bonds and attachments.

Why Formal Disclosure Matters (Part 2) - Episode 194

Moving forward after a betrayal is critical, but when the past has not been fully addressed, it becomes difficult to focus on the future. If the betrayer does not disclose the important information to the betrayed partner, the past becomes bigger than the future. In this episode I continue the conversation on why formal disclosure matters after a betrayal to begin repairing the damage of living with lies in the relationship.

Moving forward after a betrayal is critical, but when the past has not been fully addressed, it becomes difficult to focus on the future. If the betrayer does not disclose the important information to the betrayed partner, the past becomes bigger than the future. In this episode I discuss the following reasons why a formal disclosure is important to betrayal healing:

  • Help both partners enter reality

  • Facing yourself by facing your partner

  • Reduce shame

Dealing with the Post-Betrayal Freeze - Episode 192

Dealing with the Post-Betrayal Freeze - Episode 192

We’ve all heard the terms “fight, flight, or freeze”. In a physical, adrenaline-filled situation, one could argue that any of these responses would be preferred over another. However, in an emotionally charged situation such as post-betrayal trauma, having your partner freeze when bringing up your pain, hurt, and emotional needs can continue to damage the relationship. In this episode we discuss different methods to manage this natural reaction, build resilience, and how to better react in the future.

Finding Your True Self After Betrayal - Episode 191

Finding Your True Self After Betrayal - Episode 191

One of the biggest effects of trauma, especially from betrayal, is the feeling of depersonalization; the feeling of watching your life unfold from the outside looking in. These feelings may be overwhelming, often accompanied by a sense of urgency to find yourself and your happiness. In this episode we share where to begin on the journey to finding your true self again, and how directly searching for it may actually be counterproductive in your efforts to reconnect.

Checking Our Blind Spots - Episode 190

We all have our own life experiences that shape our opinions, motives, and actions. While we are able to live our lives how it makes sense to us, inevitably we each have blind spots that may cloud our judgment or limit our ability to see ourselves clearly. In this episode we discuss methods to gauge our blind spots, receive productive feedback from our relationships with others, and hold ourselves accountable to those that need to be eliminated as we continually develop into who we want to be.

When Is It Objectification? - Episode 189

Betrayed women often find themselves questioning if their partner is still lusting after or objectifying other women, sometimes years after trust was broken. It can be difficult to know if actions match the thoughts behind them. In this episode we discuss the warning signs of objectification and how those red flags can point to something unresolved in recovery.

Are You Motivated by Fear or Love? - Episode 188

Are You Motivated by Fear or Love? - Episode 188

In the aftermath of betrayal it is very common for the betrayer to act from a place of fear; going through the motions of compliments, acts of service, and even grandiose displays of gifts or affection for fear of losing their partner. This behavior objectifies the betrayed as something to be kept or won, and can often feel manipulative, self-serving and insincere. In today’s episode we discuss how to switch the motivation behind these acts from fear to love. When the motive is genuine care and concern for the betrayed, a pathway to deeper connection and healing can begin.

Protecting Victims of the Pornography Industry - Dani Pinter, Senior Legal Counsel NCOSE - Episode 187

Protecting Victims of the Pornography Industry - Dani Pinter, Senior Legal Counsel NCOSE - Episode 187

Even though our focus on this podcast is helping couples and individuals heal from the impact of betrayal, we feel it's important to understand and support the behind-the-scenes efforts of groups who are protecting the innocent victims of the pornography industry. Healing is about embracing truth and we strongly believe that all those who are victimized need voices and advocates. It's a sad reality that as the demand for pornography increases, so does the violence behind it. The numbers of adults and children being sexually exploited are skyrocketing as this demand increases. Americans are the number one consumers of pornography, and more often than not, these “performers” have not consented, and are actually victims of sex crimes. In this episode we welcome Dani Pinter, Senior Legal Counsel for the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE). Join us as we discuss the dark side of the industry that produces pornography and how we can help those who are exploited. Dani outlines how NCOSE is fighting to develop legislation to hold companies accountable, defend trafficked victims, and what you can do to take a stand against the injustices of sexual exploitation.
