Come As You Are with Pastor Brian Smith

Come As You Are with Pastor Brian Smith

In today’s episode, we talk with Senior Pastor and Founder Brian Smith of the First Heavy Metal Church of Christ in Dayton, Ohio. This is a church where metalheads and rockers congregate to worship Jesus Christ. The Church has been featured on The Today Show, numerous local Dayton news shows, and in VICE Magazine. This church welcomes prostitutes, drug addicts, bikers, gang members, metalheads, felons, and anyone else who is willing to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. In just 10 years the church has performed over 1,040 river baptisms. The motto of the church is: “Come as you are.” Why aren’t modern churches welcoming to all lost souls?

Questions:

  • What is “Heavy Metal Church”?
  • The early church evangelized in parts of the world where it was hostile and not very receptive to Christ. However, many modern churches have this perception that you must clean yourself up before coming to Christ. Why do you see many churches are evangelizing incorrectly?

Depression: Don't Bear it Alone

Depression: Don't Bear it Alone

Depression. It’s a word many are either afraid or ashamed to utter. Depression is difficult to overcome and come to terms with.

According to the CDC, 50% of Americans will battle with mental illness at some point in their lifetime.

Women are nearly twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression. However, compared to women, men are three times more likely to die by suicide in Australia, 3.5 times more likely in the US.

Research shows men are far less likely than women to seek help not only for all mental-health problems, but depression in particular.

According to a 2014 Lifeway study, 66% of pastors mostly avoid the topic from the pulpit, choosing to preach about mental health either once, rarely, or never each year.

Unfortunately, most churches have not provided mental health support to their congregation.

This podcast episode is not about telling Christian’s to “try” not being depressed. We will not tell you that the reason you feel depressed is you lack faith. Your personal faith in Christ can help ease depression. This episode is about finding ‘hope’ in your walk with Christ.

In today’s episode, we talk with Darryl Eyb. He’s a pastor, blogger, and speaker. He helps ordinary people connect with an extraordinary God, so they can follow Jesus in their everyday life. Welcome, Darryl.

Questions:

  1. Has depression made you question God or feel distant from Him?
  2. Has depression impacted your faith?
  3. How did you overcome the hold depression had on you?
  4. What can the church be doing to help those with depression?
  5. What do you want to say to a depressed Christian?

The Freedom Fight with Ted Shimer

The Freedom Fight with Ted Shimer

For the past 30 years, Ted Shimer has witnessed first-hand the destruction of this particular type of addiction – marriages, careers, and lives devastated by an uncontrollable, all-consuming dependence. The statistics are shocking:

  • A Pastors.com survey revealed 54% of pastors say they’ve viewed it in the last year.
  • A Barna Group survey showed 64% of Christian men are consuming it monthly, roughly equivalent to 65% of non-Christian men monthly.
  • The most alarming statistics related to the Church’s future are a 2019 Freedom Fight survey of Christian college students, who say their faith is very important to them.
  • 89% of these college men involved in collegiate ministries say they watch it. 63% of this group watch it at least weekly and 51% of these future Christian leaders say they are addicted to it.
  • And only 7% of churches say they have the resources to assist their members with this addiction.

Countless pastors, church leaders and Christians in general are withering under the shame of their current struggle. And with skyrocketing numbers of teen addictions, the next generation will be plagued with the underlying effects on an even larger scale. If the Church doesn’t equip their people to address this pandemic with real solutions, the results will be catastrophic.

But there is hope. Mr. Shimer’s organization, The Freedom Fight, has developed a gospel-centered, scientifically-informed, biblical approach to help those addicted completely recover. They are proud to provide a free program that can be used by individuals, small groups and churches. Shimer has also penned an accompanying book, The Freedom Fight: The New Drug and The Truths that Set Us Free, where he explores the destructive nature of it, examines its six root factors and shares practical methods to overcome it through biblical and science-based solutions that lead to genuine freedom. Welcome Mr. Shimer.

Questions:

  • Why is porn so hard to quit?
  • What are the six roots of this type of addiction and how can we combat the underlying cause?
  • How is this addiction undermining church growth?
  • How can a husband tell their wife about their secret addiction?
  • What can we do to fight this epidemic?
  • How does addressing this very problem in the Church is an opportunity for revival

Why Christian Men Need Heroes?

Why Christian Men Need Heroes?

Over the last 20 years, we’ve seen an influx of comic book superhero movies grow in popularity. From Iron Man to Thor to Batman to Captain America.

Most superhero movies revolve around the clash between heroes and villains. Good versus evil. The unique challenges we face in life can be daunting and stressful, leaving us feeling powerless. We can identify with superheroes, and they can help inspire us to approach obstacles in the same heroic and altruistic way they do.

More than ever before, men need examples of biblical manhood. There is a growing absence of fathers in the household, and in our churches, there is a godly man gap.

There is an absent father crisis in America. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 19.7 million children, more than 1 in 4, live without a father in the home. This statistic is sad for two reasons: boys are growing up without a father, and our society sees this as normal.

Where do men learn how to be godly men? Where are the godly heroes for little boys to look up to? Is this why comic book heroes are growing in popularity? How do we break the cycle?

In today’s episode, we talk with James Hall, Host of the Restoring Heroes Project and a good friend of mine. His podcast is about real biblical manhood in a counterfeit world.

Questions:

  1. We see how popular superhero movies are in America. Do you think their popularity signifies the lack of real manhood?
  2. What is counterfeit manhood?
  3. Did you experience counterfeit manhood in your life?
  4. How would you define ‘real biblical manhood’?
  5. What do we do to counter counterfeit manhood?
  6. What could we Christian men do to break the cycle?

Christianity Under Communist Rule with Pastor Jason Moore

Christianity Under Communist Rule with Pastor Jason Moore

In today's episode, we will be talking with our special guest, Pastor Jason Moore, about his time as a Christian missionary in Ukraine during communist rule. Ukraine regained its independence after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

Under communist rule, Christians experienced brutal suppression and persecution from Soviet authorities. Marxism-Leninism has consistently advocated the control, suppression, and, ultimately, the elimination of religious beliefs.

Estimates of the total number all Christian martyrs in the former Soviet Union are about 12 million.” (James M. Nelson, “Psychology, Religion, and Spirituality”, Springer, 2009, ISBN 0387875727, p. 427).

Questions:

  1. Let’s start off with why did you decide to do a mission trip to Ukraine? How old were you?
  2. What adversity or setbacks did you encounter during this time?
  3. In John 15:19-20: If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they keep my word, they will also keep yours. What does this verse mean for modern christians in the west?

Be a Finisher with Dan Steuer

Be a Finisher with Dan Steuer

Have you ever started a project, assignment or job with a sudden burst of enthusiasm only to be slowed down by an obstacle and stop short of your goal by frequent obstacles? On today’s episode we talk with Dan Steuer, Host of Finish Last, a podcast that is searching for ways to live like Jesus in the modern world.
The strength of a person’s character. . .their grit and drive to success is determined by whether or not they can finish what they started.
The One by whom our every effort, thought and action should be measured . . . was a finisher.
John 4:34 in the NIV says:
“My food ( or what nourishes us),” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
Not only was Jesus a finisher but he gave us what we need to be that way as well.
Philippians 1:6 in the New Living Translation says:
“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”
We want to be able to say the words found on the day of Judgement in 2 Timothy 4:7 (NIV) in which says:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
If you want to be a finisher. . .the words in Hebrews 12:2 should be like second nature to you. The verse says:
“fixing our eyes on Jesus [AVOID DISTRACTION], the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Let’s Break this down: We need to finish the journey we have started. We will face difficult adversity along the way, however, we must continue our work. We must fix our eyes on Jesus in all that we do and avoid any distractions along the way. Jesus finished what God had him do and endured the suffering of the Cross. Jesus was a finisher.
Questions:

We are talking about being a finisher. To finish a journey God has sent us on. Tell me about the journey God has called to you to pursue.

What adversity or setbacks have you encountered along the way?

How would you define spiritual grit?

What advice would you give to fellow Christian men who are facing setbacks in their journey?

The Faith to Persevere with Shea Watson

The Faith to Persevere with Shea Watson

The focus of today’s episode of the Frontline Podcast, we will talk to our guest, Shea Watson, about what perseverance looks like in his spiritual journey.

In our spiritual journey in the pursuit of Christ, we will all face adversity of some kind. Let’s break down what it means to persevere.

Hebrews 10:36 (NIV): You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

The King James Version of Hebrews 10:36 says:

“For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.”

In KJV it’s talking about patience. It’s a long journey.

According to Strong’s Concordance the Greek word for patience means: “steadfastness (unwavering), constancy, and endurance”

James 5:11: As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Job endured great personal suffering. However, he trusted God’s wisdom and character.

Galatians 6:9: Let us not become weary (tired, fatigued) in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

BREAK THIS DOWN: To persevere, you need to have patience. You need to be persistent. You need to show steadfastness (unwavering), constancy, and endurance in the face of adversity.

Questions:

  1. Tell me a little about yourself as a Christian man and how you came to follow Christ?
  2. What adversity have you encountered in your spiritual pursuit of Christ?
  3. How would you define spiritual grit?
  4. What advice would you give to fellow Christian men who are facing adversity?
