#24: How to Get Featured in the Media to Boost Your Social Influence

#24: How to Get Featured in the Media to Boost Your Social Influence

Josh Elledge, CEO and founder of Savings Angel, is a PR mastermind! His achievements include being featured in over 1000 media outlets, being a syndicated newspaper columnist, having a guest spot every Tuesday on his local Fox affiliate, as well as being a successful entrepreneur. Josh talks with Luc today about why press releases are a waste of time and energy and how you should be focusing your media reach, his 3-Step Strategy to achieve your media goals, and how to effectively use Twitter to reach out to journalists and media outlets. Stay tuned for priceless and easy tips for media success! Key Benefits of Being Featured in Media If you provide enough value to audiences you gain their trust. A certain percentage will then want to do business with you. It’s a great opportunity for digital entrepreneurs to repurpose their content into setting themselves up as a subject matter expert. How to Get Featured Don’t do press releases. Most journalists do not read them. A better use of time and energy is producing great content that attracts an audience. You need content that shows you're ‘legit’- journalists and gatekeepers will assess you within 30 seconds of their time. The 3-Step Strategy to ‘Get You Noticed’. Here’s what journalists are looking for: Etiquette-how did you reach out? 90% of journalists are on Twitter and use it actively. You need to have a good Twitter presence yourself. You must have a professional pitch, a complete profile, and a ‘head shot’ avatar. Website. It must be up to date. If it’s not, you’re not showing the world you’re a subject matter expert for your industry. Our job as subject matter experts is to make the journalist’s job easier of serving their audience. Digital Reputation-it needs to be good. If someone Googles your name, what are they going to find? Are you on reputable outlets and platforms? Publicity Sales Funnel You have to have a mindset shift from sales to service. You have to be able to offer value and find ways to get in front of an audience to share that value. Then, people are looking for you, not the other way around. When you offer them free value, they are willing to listen and want more. It’s far easier to have a business relationship an audience that actively sought you out because they liked what they heard about you. Utilizing Twitter/Choosing and Finding the Right Media Contacts and Outlets A couple hundred Twitter followers can legitimize you. The more the merrier. Start promoting your Twitter handle on Facebook, email lists, podcast audiences. Share good visual content relevant to your industry. You want journalists to see that people are interested in what you have to share. Your Twitter news feed is likely filled with crap and noise. Get rid of it. Instead, make 2 lists: Industry-related media and local media. Follow those lists. Read the feeds. Find out who is saying what. Define every outlet where you’d like to be featured. What Do Journalists Look For? Is it going to be valuable to their audience? The ‘smell’ test-if they smell sales, they feel used. Just offer them the content and thank them-don’t ask for anything in return. Allow business to happen organically from being featured. Play the long game. Focus on giving-that frees up influencers to give back to you. Huffington Post and Other Outlets HuffPost does take a lot of people if you have a decent pitch. Just don’t expect to get paid. Keep in mind that you’re just doing it for the byline. Your audience does not realize how easy it can be to get in HuffPo and it legitimizes you. When you have ‘media cred’ on your website, it increases your sales conversions. With any outlet, they are looking for contributors who already have a sizeable audience and a good proposal. All media and entrepreneurial relationships are symbiotic. The bigger winner in the equation is the entrepreneur. Where

#23: The Art of Overcoming with Former Pittsburgh Pirates Centerfielder Chaz Lytle

#23: The Art of Overcoming with Former Pittsburgh Pirates Centerfielder Chaz Lytle

Chaz Lytle, former MLB pro with the Pittsburg Pirates, and owner of Chaz Lytle Baseball in Orlando, FL, is living his passion teaching all ages how to make it in the ‘big leagues’. Chaz talks honestly and from the heart with Luc today about the years after retiring from MLB, overcoming depression, and helping youth increase their success and enjoyment of the game.

Chaz’s Journey

Chaz started his professional baseball career at the University of Georgia and went through the semi-pro leagues before signing with the Pirates.
In fact, he never had any plans for after his pro career. Baseball was always his focus.
But, in 2004, Rick Eckstein (hitting coach for the Univ. of Kentucky Wildcats), asked Chaz to help him with an off-season clinic.
Something just ‘clicked’ for him at that moment, and he even turned down an opportunity to become a scout to continue working with youth.
He started his own training camp, Chaz Lytle Baseball, and his first student is now on the way to playing pro with the Cleveland Indians.

‘Put Barrel on Ball’

This is Chaz’s mantra with his students. Nothing else matters. As long as you can hit that ball, you can succeed.
Instead of trying to do too much, you’re just squaring up. You can’t steer the ball.
And, it doesn’t matter how big you are or where you came from.
This mantra translates to life as well.
You can’t control life. All you can do is prepare to be in the best place possible for opportunity to happen.
You have to put in the work and ‘just go do it. No matter your circumstances.

Battling Depression

At first, retiring from MLB was the toughest time in his life. He went through a deep depression.
He didn’t overcome it until he asked himself how he had gotten there and then realized he just no longer wanted to be that person.

It was a bad place to be but, having overcame it, it helps him relate much better to his students.
He can see trouble ahead for some and he can talk seriously with the kids about where certain things are and are not going to get them in their lives and careers.

Developing Mindset

In life, we are going to have setbacks. It is inevitable. It’s how you come back from those setbacks that matter.
That mindset is so important to him that he wants his son, Duke, to learn from someone who has experienced the ups and downs of life.
Don’t beat yourself up before you even get in the game.
You have to understand that we can only do so much and the rest is trust.
In sports, you are programmed and led to every major practice, game, etc. In life, you have to do that for yourself.
Chaz undertook a lot of classes and a lot of personal development work to re-program his life.
He understands now what he can and can’t control in life and you just can’t worry about tomorrow. Live today.
So many of his students have developed a fear of talking openly because it feels like a sign of weakness.
He tells his kids that it’s good to have conversations about where you are emotionally.

Mental Toughness in Business

In sports, you’re going to fail. You can’t win every game. The same goes for business.
It’s not about how many times you’ve gotten knocked down-it’s how many times you got back up.
You have to pay your dues. If you don’t know where you came from, you’re never getting to where you want to go.
Never ever give up. Even the best players can have a bad season.
When times are great, everyone loves you. But, you really find out who cares about you when times are tough.

3 Steps to Greatness

Perseverance, Adversity, and Hard Work.

If you can persevere, battle adversity, and do the hard work, that gets you through it.

#22: Create a Blog That Attracts 50k Unique Visitors Per Month

#22: Create a Blog That Attracts 50k Unique Visitors Per Month

Laurence Bradford, owner and blogger of ‘Learn to Code with Me’, is an experienced traveler, tech careers authority for About.com, and website coding expert. She chats with Luc today about the evolution of her site from personal journal to thriving business, real-time in-depth advice on what platforms to use, and even gives Luc a few tips on his own website!

Laurence’s Journey

Laurence’s road to becoming a website creator was paved with many twists and turns.
After college, she taught English in Thailand, worked at Bangkok ‘think tank’ and studied for her GRE to pursue a master’s in economic development.
In her free time, she started doing Code Academy and fell in love with it instantly.
She came back to the US and delved deep into learning how to build sites.
‘Learn to Code with Me’ was originally started as a personal blog to stay accountable and work out frustrations.

The Evolution of ‘Learn to Code with Me’

Looking back, you can see that many of her early posts are about her.
When she started providing value to her readers is when traffic started to pick up.
Today, she has about 30K unique visitors per month-her goal for 2016 is 45K monthly.
A few of her influences include Pat Flynn, Neil Patel of QuickSprout and Brian Dean of Backlinko.
She doesn’t write based on SEO strategies. About 80% of monthly traffic comes from organic searching on Google and a few key posts.

Monetizing Her Site

When she first started her site in April 2014, monetizing was not on her mind.
Now, she has affiliate marketing on her site, which she started doing when she got serious about her site.
Laurance is picky about what affiliate programs she chooses and they are related to her field.

In September 2014, she launched her first course, Portfolio Dojo, a very niche course for beginning web developers that are looking for business.
As a first launch, her course did well, converting at about 5%. Her goal was less about money and more so to validate the idea and generate interest.
Laurence’s blog gives her authority status that open opportunities to write articles for other tech outlets, which are a consistent source of income.

Advice for Creating an Awesome Blog

Provide Value- give people actionable information and tips they can use right away.
Create a Community-people come for the content but they stay for the community.
Be Amazing. Be Everywhere. Be Real-people aren’t just going to come to you. You have to put yourself out there.
Guest-posting on other’s blogs
Podcast interviews
Live Events

Laurence Gets Real with Luc-Maximizing HIS Site

Good copy is essential for organic traffic-Google can’t scan images and videos.
Track Everything-you can’t change what you don’t measure.
If you have a podcast, posting the ‘Show Notes’ is essential.
Have easy ‘gimme’ items for your e-mail subscribers, such as guides, cheat sheets, etc.
Research the most popular articles for certain keywords and concepts.
Do surveys of your audience-gauge their interests and what they’re looking for.

#21: Alan Belcher: From Top Ranked UFC Fighter to Martial Arts Entrepreneur

#21: Alan Belcher: From Top Ranked UFC Fighter to Martial Arts Entrepreneur

Alan ‘The Talent’ Belcher, retired UFC middleweight champion, and successful entrepreneur, is realizing the dream he started with at just 14 years old! Getting his start at wiping down sweat in a gym, he has built a successful business, moved through the ranks of the UFC, and his star just keeps rising! Alan chats with Luc today about developing a resilience mindset from sports that he uses in his business, why he doesn’t burn out despite running multiple businesses, and why his daily routine starts with a focus on spending time with his children.
Alan’s Journey
Alan started off in martial arts and was introduced to weightlifting at 14 years old.
He was intrigued by it and it quickly became a huge part of his life.
He took an after-school job for 6 months wiping down lifting gym facilities. That introduced him early to the business side of gyms.
As a teen, he designed his first gym that combined weight training and a martial arts area, long before the day of MMA-type focused training areas.
He knew from that point forward that he wanted to teach martial arts and own a gym.
At 21, he still hadn’t been accepted into UFC. He knew he had to ‘grow up’ and start paying the bills.
That drive started his first business-teaching children martial arts.
Within 6 months of starting the business, he was accepted into UFC and the business paid for him to be able to focus on training.
Because it made sense for him to keep the business, he started learning quickly how to hire employees and trainers while he moved through the UFC ranks.
Recently, he needed to make the decision of whether to keep growing the business or retire from UFC.
He chose the business. When you work at your passion is when you excel.
Developing Mindset
In the MMA world, failures are ordinary. You have to learn from your mistakes and come back stronger.
If you let small things hold you back, you will never build any forward momentum.
During his last couple of years, Alan discovered more patience and consistency.
He didn’t get to use either one much in his fights, but those attributes will help him ‘shine’ in the business world.
You can’t quit. You have to keep going. If you stop after 6 months-1 year, you never even really started.
You have to accept that there will be hard days, ups and downs ahead.
Not being afraid to face that struggle and take those risks makes you an extraordinary entrepreneur.
Business as a Sport
So many athletes have all of the necessary traits and skills to succeed in business but few of them do.
Alan believes the missing ingredient is competitiveness, looking at business as a game instead of a paycheck.
He views business successes, such as leverage, as scoring points.
He puts out content and free value to expand his reach and build his brand-it’s a game to him to be ‘everywhere’.
About ‘Combat Con’
Alan launched this conference in 2014 for MMA and BJJ business owners.
The first year, he brought in a lot of his personal mentors to speak-it was a huge success.
In year two, they doubled in size to 200 gym owners and he expanded his speakers.
He wanted to show business owners how to go ‘outside’ their industry to learn strategies.
If you only stay inside your own industry, no one does anything innovative.
He uses the event to help people as well as increase his own leverage and authority.
Balancing and Avoiding Burnout
Alan believes being able to balance boils down to one thing: he is a good leader.
As a youth, he had a very introverted personality. It’s something that he had to work hard at because he knew the value of communicating and connecting with people.
Along the way of developing communication, he learned leadership skills.
He admits he’s very unorganized. He doesn’t mind admitting it, hoping it will inspire others.
But, being disorganized has a price-your payroll goes up because you have to hire more people who can make up for that weakness!
He treats his team really well and they can see his pas

#20: 4 Step Blueprint to Success with Ted Talk Speaker & Division I Wrestler

#20: 4 Step Blueprint to Success with Ted Talk Speaker & Division I Wrestler

Jim Harshaw is a champion in everything he does! A former wrestler, he’s been on the winning side and the losing side, but he’s used the experience of his losses on the mat to win in life. He sits down with Luke today to talk about wrestling mindset, developing mental toughness in combat sports, preparation, Jim’s Bio Jim is a Former Division I wrestler and Division I coach as well as an entrepreneur. During his career, he trained at the Olympic training center and won 3 conference championships. Today, he’s the host of ‘Wrestling with Greatness’ podcast, a motivational coach and has been a keynote speaker at TED Talks. ‘Failing Forward’ The subject of his TED Talk, this is Jim’s personal recounting of his career as a Division I wrestler at UVA. In his quest to become an All-American, he had more failures than wins, but ultimately those losses led to success. In sports, you learn life lessons, but you have to consciously apply them. ‘Failing Forward’ is his personal recollection of what he learned and the commonalities of each time he was successful-it is a blueprint for achievement. The Grind By and large, he was a failure until the success came. It’s the same for everyone. There’s so much adversity, struggle and setback that others don’t see. They just see the end result. When people are successful, others don’t think they went through these dark days. Everyone does. ‘You get tough by doing tough things’. When you do things that are challenging, you become more developed as a person. You have to be willing to do the things that other people aren’t if you want to excel. Dealing with Self-Doubt and Adversity Adversity can push you to success but it can also pull you down, so it’s all about mindset. You have to consciously control the ‘negative’ voice that creeps into your head when you’re struggling. How do you deal with that voice that creeps into your head? Jim’s mantra is: “I’m strong, I’m positive, I’m confident.” A lot of research shows that how you carry yourself physically affects your performance and emotion. Smiling and standing upright, shoulders back-that stuff really works. It’s about ‘faking it ‘til you make it’. You want to make yourself and your opponent believe you feel better than you actually do. Meditation and Visualization Jim visualizes quite a bit. He started working with a sports psychologist later in life to improve this skill. It’s easy to do that in sports because you know what it looks like to win, i.e. standing on the podium. But, in life, it can be little harder to crystallize that one battle you have to go through to get to ‘that’ place-it’s rarely just one phone call or one presentation. Instead, visualize your one ‘ideal’ day, whether it’s spending time with your family or the perfect vacation. Being able to live that day is your ‘why’. Take that vision into your environment of excellence.

#17: Bruce Buffer on Business, Success, & Mental Toughness

#17: Bruce Buffer on Business, Success, & Mental Toughness

Hustle To Greatness Podcast-Episode 17
Bruce Buffer is a serious powerhouse! From a 19-year old business owner to a major sports personality, Bruce has done it all. He sits down with Luke today to talk about his journey, how persistence and passion drives him, and some real-life tips from the fighting world that you can use in business.

Bruce’s Bio
Bruce has been THE voice behind the UFC for the last 20 years.
He is a super entrepreneur, starting companies as early as his high-school years.
He is a business marketing and branding genius as well as a motivational speaker.
He’s also the 8th best Celebrity Poker Player in the world, a podcast host, an author, and he just performed his first in-person wedding ceremony!

His Journey
In college, a successful sales manager stint led him to form his own company.
Although he was sued by his former employer, he benefitted when he negotiated a return with a bigger salary, more commission and an ownership stake.
From that point forward, he dibble-dabbled in several industries, and owned several more companies, but he was still seeking that enterprise that he could be passionate about.
A turn of fate came when he and his father discovered Michael Buffer, boxing’s most popular announcer, was his brother, and they became close friends.
and was doing financially fantastic, when he and his father rekindled a relationship with Michael Buffer, his brother.
While attending the Evander/Holyfield fight with Michael in 1992, Bruce had an epiphany about branding and trademarking ‘Let’s Get Ready to Rumble’.
Inspired by Pat Riley of the LA Lakers, Bruce was so passionate about his ideas for building an empire based on that tag-line, that he sold all of his existing companies and went full-steam ahead.
As of today, that venture has sold more than $400 million in toys, games and other merchandise worldwide.

The Man in ‘The Octagon’
Bruce let Michael know that he wanted to be a sports announcer too and they agreed he wouldn’t do boxing. He stayed in the industry, attending trade shows, etc., confident that something would come along.
In 1993, UFC did come along and he got his brother a 3-fight deal, but Michael had to discontinue due to contractual obligations with WWE/WCW.
He persisted with UFC, telling them they still needed a ‘Buffer’ in the arena but it fell on deaf ears until he got a role as the UFC announcer on an episode of ‘Friends’.
Bruce took that to the table, the biggest plug UFC had ever gotten, and insisted on a decision or he’d walk away completely. It worked!

Success Basically Comes Down To:
Pursuing Your Dreams, Focusing, Writing Down Your Goals, Going for It and Believing in Yourself and Making it Happen.
Bruce approaches everything he wants to go after with this same strategy.
In life, we are all created equal. It’s about the path that we choose.
Whatever you want to do in life, do it and be the best at it. That’s what separates you from the rest of the players.

Mental Toughness and Tenacity are the Same Across the Board
The mental toughness, persistence and self-development you learn in any kind of fighting or game can be applied to business.
When someone is facing you down, across the field or across the table, you have a decision to make.
You either go for it or you back off. If you get hit, you dust yourself off and get back in the fight.
It’s learning when to be offensive or defensive, thinking 3 moves ahead and anticipating your opponent.

Advice to His Younger Self
Patience is key in everything that you do.
Always approach business unemotionally.
Take a step back from yourself and look at everything objectively.

#14: Luis Congdon on How To Network & Connect with Famous People

#14: Luis Congdon on How To Network & Connect with Famous People

Luis Congdon on Building Relationships, Connecting Digitally, and Creating Real Value

A snippet from Luis’ website:
My work comes out of a passion to help others avoid the pains I went through. When we lose love, it’s like a part of us dies—and that pain can cut deeper than any wound. When we have unhealthy patterns in our relationship, it’s as if we’ve put a kink in our ability to tap fully into the love available. That’s why I do this—to help couples, their kids, and everyone who is impacted when love doesn’t seem like it’s enough. It’s my speciality to help couples end negative cycles, and find new ones that work.
Love can be simple. It just takes the right insights, coaching, and methods to avoid the pitfalls that come with being in a relationship.

How does love transfer into a business sense?
Businesses are about building relationships. There is an exchange between two people, building a relationship between one another that is sustainable and has longevity.

“My net worth is in my network.”

Blogs vs. Podcasts
Blogs can be an effective medium for networking, but they’re lacking one thing: connection. Podcasts make it easy to forge a personal connection with your guest. When you interview someone, you’re able to ask questions, chat back and forth, and get personal with your guest. And as a bonus, when you ask someone to be on your podcast, it makes it extremely easy for them. All they have to do is talk, and you do the rest.

Just how do you make money podcasting?
You’ll have to listen to my chat with Luis to learn more! One hint: a podcast is an arm of your business; it’s not the business.

Luis’ formula for networking:
Write an email directly to a big player in a specific industry, asking for help
“Hey person! I really loved your product about this and that; it really connected with me on this level…
…I’m working on starting a business about product x or service y, and I’d love to include you. If you’re interested, I’d be happy to arrange my schedule to make things work for you. Please let me know.”
Make it sound easy for them to join in
Make it sound valuable for them

Action Step to Make Connections:
Head to Facebook, and search for a keyword of an industry you want to get involved in or a profession you want to practice
Filter your search by groups, and seek out groups that are active and full of people to connect with
Then, simply request to connect
Once you’re in, go to work! Stay active in your groups, provide value to other members, and actively engage in conversations

#13: The Marine Way: Overcoming a Self Defeating Attitude with Former U.S. Marine Coach Ed Harris Jr.

After some time in deliberation and soul-searching, along with the prompting and encouragement of many, I have decided to charge ahead with wellness, weight loss coaching, personal training, stress management and life coaching. Also as a person who has shed close to 60 lbs himself, I feel as though I can be sympathetic and helpful to those who are taking the same journey. I enjoy helping others to see and get the best from themselves. My philosophy is simply Motivation, Moderation and Movement. As a Marine-veteran, and someone with 18+ years of management experience, I have had the opportunity to witness, observe and experience methods of obtaining and inspiring achievement, many through trial and error, many wrought from frustration. My approach is just simply apply Godly-wisdom, tried and true methods of dealing with people who come form different frames of reference and backgrounds and insight from an unbiased angle as well as helping people see the best in themselves.

Three Truths that Coach Ed lives by day-to-day:
Life is not fair – make peace with that fact

#11: UFC Champion & Hall of Famer Bas Rutten on Fighting and Living a Life of Greatness

I had the honor of having one of my favorite fighters on the show - MMA Legend and UFC Hall of Famer Bas Rutten. While juggling all of this, Bas is also the colorful commentator of the World Series of Fighting (MMA Promotion) and trains his students at his new MMA gym - Elite MMA two nights a week out in Westlake Village.
