We’re going to help you get the most of your MVC experience, outside the four walls of the lecture hall.

89. Beyond the Barn: The Urban Farm Animal Dilemma | MVC 2024 Preview Series

Pet ownership is on the rise, and it’s not just cats and dogs. More and more, small livestock—pygmy goats, potbellied pigs, and backyard chickens—are being kept as pets in urban and suburban areas. But what happens when that miniature pig reaches maturity and its unprepared owners can’t properly care for the 200-pound animal in their third-floor apartment? What happens when the baby goat outgrows its pajamas, and the reality of caring for a farm animal sets in?

Finding veterinary care for food animal species can be difficult in the big city, where most practitioners specialize in small animals. And when the owners are ill equipped to care for farm animals, the unfortunate reality is, many are surrendered to shelters that may not be outfitted to house or care for them. Worse yet, they are abandoned or even seized.

In today’s episode, we’re continuing our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series with Dr. Alissa Wilhelm, a mixed-animal practitioner and assistant professor at OSU Large Animal Services. From husbandry and wellness plans to common diseases and treatment, she offers a sneak peek into her sessions in the Shelter Animal track. Her goal is to equip shelters and small animal veterinarians with basic knowledge of nontraditional pets, so they are better able to treat these animals and educate their owners.

85. The Buck Stops Here: Preventing Chronic Wasting Disease in Ohio Deer

Across the scenic landscape of Ohio, where the cervid industry plays a significant role in the state's economy, the threat of chronic wasting disease (CWD) looms large. Although only a few dozen captive and wild deer have been identified in Ohio, officials at the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) aren't taking chances: With no available vaccine or treatment for this fatal neurodegenerative disease, an epidemic could have a catastrophic effect on both the economy and environment.

On this episode, we welcome back Dr. Liane Davila-Martin, whose job at ODA is to ensure CWD stays in check. As a veterinary epidemiologist, her goal is to assess the risks and analyze data to predict—and help prevent—CWD outbreaks in Ohio's deer populations. Through initiatives like the CWD Herd Certification Program, Dr. Davila-Martin and her colleagues are working tirelessly to control and prevent the spread of this deadly disease.

In the interview, Dr. Davila-Martin reviews the clinical signs of chronic wasting disease, explains the reporting requirements, and explores the role of ODA's cervid health program.

77. Stress Less, Part II: Implementing Herbal Medicine in Your Practice

In today's high-demand society, stress and anxiety have become more common than ever. Unfortunately, it's much easier to get it than it is to relieve it—for both pets and people. Tackling anxiety and depression is often a trial-and-error situation. For some, finding the right treatment is easy. For others, it's a long, drawn-out process that involves trying many different medications and tinkering endlessly with dosages.

But there's another option. For Dr. Alexia Tsakiris, the answer is to look at the entire patient and all their symptoms—not just their stress: Environment, diet, gut health, age, and all the other big and little variables that could be contributing to their symptoms. Using this information, she then customizes an approach using a combination of herbs best suited to that whole patient. This holistic approach has guided her practice over the course of her career, leading to improved outcomes for both animals and their people.

In the second part of our herbal medicine series, Dr. Tsakiris is back to offer some tips to practitioners who are interested in offering herbal medicine in their conventional practice. Where can you and your staff find reputable training courses? What are the legalities you need to be aware of? Tune in for the answers to these questions and more!

In the first episode of this two-part series, we explore the possibilities of herbal veterinary medicine and what it takes to get started. Dr. Tsakiris talks about the extensive education and training required, research that backs the use of herbal remedies, and how to determine whether a product is good quality. She also shares a few of the herbs she's successfully used to treat stress and anxiety in both her patients and clients.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE SECRET OF SUCCESS SERIES

As we learned on the last episode, everyone has voices in their heads that influence their day-to-day life—for the better and the worse. Once we become aware of those voices and can identify who is speaking at any given time, that's when we can begin to implement the secret formula of life... in other words, find success, happiness, and fulfillment!

Today, we welcome back Amy VanDeWater of Glue Veterinary Coaching for the second installment in our series on emotional intelligence, a.k.a. our ability to be aware of and manage our emotions and the emotions of others. She believes EQ is a superpower that can have a massive impact on our lives, and the sooner we learn to wield that power, the sooner we can achieve our heroic quest to find happiness, success, and fulfillment.

In this episode, Amy defines the second tenet of EQ: Self-management. Along with self-awareness, this is the cornerstone of the secret formula of life. Once we have achieved self-awareness, we can use the formula to begin reprogramming our brain's default responses and gradually improve our experience. With a little bit of work, this can be the key to fulfillment, both professionally and personally!

WAR AND PEACE IN THE WORKPLACE SERIES, PART II

Missed part one? Listen here »

Stress and conflict are inevitable, but they're not inherently bad. Sometimes, they can help you identify inefficiencies in a particular process and force you to find better approaches. Other times, they might encourage you to grow as a person or gain new skills that help you tackle a problem. Whether you flounder or flourish in the face of stress is largely up to you.

In this episode, our human resources guru, Maura Stevenson, is back with tips for how you can become more adept at identifying stress and conflict at work and, more importantly, resolving it. She explains what the practice owner or manager's role should be in reducing stress in the workplace, as well as to what extent they should be involved in handling conflicts among colleagues. We also discuss practical ideas (such as visual planning and batching) for managing the stressors of everyday life—big and small, at work and at home. Finally, she offers sage advice on how to let go of the things that are too much for you to handle, and how to make peace with it.

TACKLING THE TECHNICIAN SHORTAGE SERIES, PART III

What is behind the widespread shortage of technicians, and what can be done to reverse it? It's a complicated question many organizations are asking but no one has yet been able to answer. In 2021, OVMA established a task force to investigate this worsening trend, and in the past year, it has dug deep into the root of the problem in an effort to better understand its complexities and identify potential solutions.

In the pilot episode of Fully Vetted’s Tackling the Technician Shortage Series, we met Dr. Diana Cron, technician Kelley Norris, and Dr. Jennifer Wells of OVMA’s Technician Recruitment & Retention Task Force. They offered a brief history of the technician shortage, explored the factors that laid the groundwork, and discussed how the profession as a whole has been impacted.

Missed the first episode? Listen here »

In the second installment, we explored three different perspectives on the same issue—those of the veterinary technician, the practice owner, and the educator—and discussed the task force's recent survey of Ohio veterinarians and technicians.

Missed the second episode? Listen here »

In this, the final episode of the series, we look at the current state of technician education and training; ideas for the future; and ways veterinarians and practice owners can improve the technician experience to keep them happy, healthy, and employed.

In this, the second installment of the three-episode series, we explore a trio of unique but intertwined perspectives: Those of the veterinary technician, the practice owner, and the educator. Our guests also delve into the results of a task force-led survey, focusing on reasons technicians cite for staying at or leaving a practice—or the profession altogether.

The discussion sets the stage for the series conclusion, in which we'll look at the current state of technician education and training; possible improvements for the future; and ways veterinarians and practice owners can improve the technician experience to keep them happy, healthy, and employed.
