#41 Andrea Čordaš - Diversity and entrepreneurship: key ingredients for long term prosperity

#41 Andrea Čordaš - Diversity and entrepreneurship: key ingredients for long term prosperity

"Never allow fears to destroy your vision, prejudices to prevent you from growth, cruelty to embrace your heart, greed to haunt your mind, or tumble to shade your flare". Andrea Čordaš chose not to adhere to the social norm. She refused to let her surroundings (politics, tradition, polarised views) dictate her life or career. She grew up in Mostar and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Management with the highest honours from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Subsequently she earned her Master of Arts in International Relations with merit from the Central European University. Early on in her life, she was characterized as a highly intellectual and curious young lady who had many interests from science-fiction to medicine. With a strong passion for reading, learning, exploring, she found it difficult to decide where to go with her career until she realised that she can make the biggest impact by helping founders build and grow companies.

Today, she is regarded by the community as a resilient, responsible and reliable leader who approaches every life challenge with integrity, dedication and effective strategy. She is a venture partner, startup advisor and tech entrepreneurship enthusiast experienced in building and growing businesses, with one key ingredient she values and nurtures: diversity.

She helped establish and grow the Herzegovina Association of Entrepreneurs, while her name is also closely related to SPARK and NSoft in Mostar.  and Hellen’s Rock. She helped build new start-ups from scratch, later accelerating more than 35 tech startups and partnering with more than 40 organizations worldwide.

Countering the “binary way” of thinking that is overly prevalent in the world she grew up, she proved that both profit, and true human values can co-exist. While we all are being brought up and taught to go down the convenient life-path, her advice for everyone is to choose risk over security for its vast benefits. See what you can learn from an incredible woman who challenges the taboo topics and shows through her work that opportunities ensue from abandoning clichés and embracing diversity.

#40 - Sladjana Ćosić - Driving positive change in the world

#40 - Sladjana Ćosić - Driving positive change in the world

Right place at the right time? One thing is for sure, when an opportunity arises, seize it! That is exactly what Sladjana Cosic did in the midst of the war in Bosnia & Herzegovina. At the mere age of 13, she became the radio show host on the first private radio in Tuzla, Radio Kameleon. Working for the radio during the war gave Sladjana a meaningful way to contribute to her community. After the war, she worked for a national TV network and for a humanitarian organisation supporting women and children displaced by the violence - the experience that deeply influenced her later career choices. In 1999, she left Tuzla to further her education in Vienna where her abilities were recognised by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development. She worked throughout her studies, at first helping the Centre collect data on rape victims in Bosnia & Herzegovina, and later supporting programs for asylum seekers.

Her studies in Vienna opened her eyes to the world. The truly multicultural setting and understanding of hardship helped shape her career, and allowed her leadership abilities to thrive. In 2004, she won two scholarships and was accepted into a prestigious & selective program at the Johns Hopkins University - School of Advanced International Studies (one of the top graduate schools for international relations, diplomacy and economics in the world).

Since 2006, Sladjana has been on an exciting career trajectory, working firstly at the World Bank and now the European Investment Bank - the bank of the European Union - as an expert in social development. She has devoted her professional life to supporting developing nations, empowering citizens and fighting inequalities all over the world, including the East Asia and Pacific Region, South Asia, Africa, and Europe and Central Asia.

Sladjana, like many of us dreams about a prosperous Bosnia & Herzegovina, part of the larger European community. Listen to her story in our latest podcast episode!

#39 Dr. Emir Hrnjic - The future of digital payments & FinTech industry

#39 Dr. Emir Hrnjic - The future of digital payments & FinTech industry

What is culture shock? For some of us it is going to an exotic country. Yet for Emir Hrnjic, the biggest culture shock was moving from one part of his hometown of Sarajevo, where he dodged shells and sniper fire, to another, considered “free territory”. With a promise of a scholarship to study in Malaysia, in 1994 he escaped besieged Sarajevo via a hand dug tunnel under the airport better known as the "tunnel of saviour". He embarked on a global journey, with a thirst for knowledge and eagerness to take advantage of the opportunity he was given. He completed his Bachelor of Business at the International Islamic University, graduating best in his class. He then obtained a Ph.D. in Finance from Tulane University, New Orleans, USA in 2005. He has held research & teaching positions at Tulane University, Virginia Tech University, and National University of Singapore and has been a visiting scholar at the University of Maryland and University of Southern California (USC). Since 2007, Dr. Hrnjic has been associated with the National University of Singapore, Business School and also served as CEO of CIBFM (a training arm of Monetary Authority of Brunei Darussalam). His case studies are widely used at the top universities such as Harvard, Stanford, and Yale, while his commentaries are sought by major media outlets such as BBC, Bloomberg, and CNA. Dr. Hrnjic is an expert in litigation, hedge fund and FinTech consulting. Since 2020 he is also the Head of FinTech Training and a Senior Research Fellow at the Asian Institute of Digital Finance (AIDF). With over 1400 registered companies, Singapore has seen an explosion in the FinTech sector and Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Dr. Hrnjic is helping educate the future leaders of the industry. Not bad at all for a young man who escaped the madness of war to get an education.

#38 Fedja Delalić - Adversity, Technology & Triumph: The alternative olympic dream

Most of us who watched the Tokyo Olympics were in awe at the athleticism and multiculturalism, but we probably didn’t give too much thought to the thousands of incredible professionals that made the Olympics happen in the most difficult times. One of those people is Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Fedja Delalic, the Technology and Energy Manager at the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Behind every success there are many untold stories of adversity. Fedja’s story starts in Mostar where he grew up and as a teenager found himself in the middle of a war, watching neighbours shoot at each other. In the midst of the chaos his father was sent to a concentration camp and his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, she succumbed to the illness while he was attempting to build a new life in Australia. The passing of his mother and the new life challenges impacted Fedja deeply, as he dropped out of his computer engineering studies at the prestigious University of Melbourne. He worked numerous jobs to support himself but got his lucky break in the oddest of places, at Crown Casino (at the time, the world’s largest casino). He worked as a croupier on the tables while completing several IT courses and later landed a support role with Crown. The rest is history.

Fedja worked his way up in the technology management space through numerous companies but he got a taste of his dream in 2005 when his two loves (sport & technology) suddenly came together. He became part of the tech team supporting the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. His taste for this world would ultimately become a driving force in his professional career leading him to London where he to become a venue technology manager at the 2012 Olympic Games. Since that time, Fedja has worked with numerous large and complex sporting events including work with the AFL, European Games in Baku before settling in the role of Technology and Energy Manager at the International Olympic Committee, based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

We explore Fedja’s inspirational life journey and get a sneak peak behind the scenes of the Tokyo Olympics. What happens when technology is in focus at the Games? What technology trends can we expect to see in the near future at the Olympics? Tune in and find out.

#33 Veselin Jungic - Your heart and passion are the key to inspiring student success

#33 Veselin Jungic - Your heart and passion are the key to inspiring student success

Meet the multi-award winning mathematician that ran 17 marathons and worked as a chef to support his family, while completing his Ph.D as a refugee in Canada. Veselin Jungić, 'Veso' as he is known to his friends, is a teaching professor at Simon Fraser University with more than forty years of experience. Prof. Jungic’s story is one of inspiration, struggle, hard work and servant leadership.

He was born in Banja Luka but draws his roots from the beautiful village of Budimlić Japra in Krajina where he often escapes in his mind to fond memories of his childhood and grandparents. His career and life philosophy were shaped by the big names of Bosnian/Herzegovinian mathematics such as Mahmut Bajraktarevic, Kalmi Finci, Dusan Vujakovic, Fikret Vajzovic, Radomir Zivkovic and Naza Tanovic-Miller & Harry Miller and Veselin Peric.

His mission to promote the importance of mathematics in everyday life resulted with the development of the Math Catcher Outreach Program,  tackling the stigma surrounding mathematics among Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth through school visits, workshops, summer camps, tutoring and creation of learning resources in various First Nation languages. More than 25,000 students have been inspired by Prof. Jungic and his team to date. He has also created four animated films about the adventures of Math girl, and from 2010-2016 he co-wrote eight stories about Small Number, an Aboriginal boy who sees and discovers mathematics everywhere.

Among the numerous awards, Prof. Jungic was recognised as the 3M National Teaching Fellow in 2015 and Adrien Pouliot Award in 2020 for his outstanding contributions to mathematics education in Canada.

"Our hearts and passion can make up for our lack of resources in teaching. A good teacher always finds a way to transfer their passion towards a topic to their students. We need to be creative and continue learning ourselves. The world around us is changing rapidly and we no longer act as sources of information, we facilitate learning. Love your students, respect them, give them space, support them in the best way you can. Share your own life story and most importantly don’t forget that you are a role model. The question remains what sort of role model do you want to be and how will you shape future leaders?", says Prof. Jungic.

#29 Dennis Savic - Dream to reality: Designing & manufacturing your own high performance electric motorcycle

#29 Dennis Savic - Dream to reality: Designing & manufacturing your own high performance electric motorcycle

As a 10-year-old boy, Dennis Savic wanted to build a motorcycle. Then, pretty soon, he decided: no, he wanted to build a motorcycle company. “By the time I was 14, it had become an obsession,” he says. “Everything I did was for this one goal – to create my own electric motorcycle brand.”

Today, Savic Motorcycles is all about obsession: the obsession of a young and passionate team that Dennis has handpicked for their capabilities to design and build Australia’s first high-performance electric motorbike. They are backed by some of the biggest brains in the automotive industry, including the CEOs of multinational joint ventures, techpreneurs who’ve launched multi-million- dollar start-ups, and engineers who have worked on World Championship-winning Formula 1 cars and air-racing teams.

But despite his impressive global alliances, Dennis’s engineering credentials stand on their own. By the age of 25, he had worked for two of Australia’s largest energy companies and was serving as Ford Australia’s optimisation engineer. Dennis resigned from automotive giant Ford so that he could pursue his dream. At just 28, he’s developed Savic Motorcycles into a thriving business, launched three successful capital-raisings, and appointed a team who share his passion and bring the vision to reality.  In early 2021, despite the ravages of a major global pandemic, Dennis hopes to launch one of the most highly anticipated new vehicles to come out of Australia in recent years. Not bad for an Australian-Bosnian boy from Perth who dared to dream big.

#28 Dunja Veselinovic - The Math of Language

Have you heard of language engineers? No worries, not many people are familiar with this profession, as it is very new. Dunja Veselinovic is one of the endemic people who compute around language.

The story of Dunja Veselinovic shows the turnovers of life and the personal transformation. She graduated from the Grammar School in Sarajevo, Druga gimnazija. A highly mathematical school shaped her interest rather towards language, which is why she studied English Language and Literature, convinced that she would work on literary translations until the rest of her life. She had a job at the Federal television of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but searched for ways to expand and received a scholarship in the US where she completed her PhD. Her studies brought her back to her mathematical and computational background as she had to apply different skills for her linguistic research that helped her land a job at the tech giant Amazon!

Dunja shared with us the beautiful sides of language, with all the untapped fields of the world of language. We discussed the challenge of the BiH diaspora kids and ways of joyful language exercises that would help all the Bosnian-Herzegovinians to keep the BiH linguistic heritage alive.

How many of us can say that we played basketball against Mirza Teletovic, performed together with hip hop superstars Edo Maajka, Frenkie, Jala Brat, and presented on the same stage where Steve Jobs launched numerous products at Apple? Miralem Salihovic, also known as King Mire in the hip hop world, was passionate about technology and music but due to a lack of opportunities, he became a German language teacher. He was destined to lead a simple life in his homeland Bosnia & Herzegovina. However, he took a chance and quit his job as a teacher to pursue his true passion, producing hip-hop music and performing. #26 Kenan Huremovic - Let’s Find a Job

Are you up for a game?

Despite a difficult start, Kenan Huremovic graduated as a star of the Faculty of Math and Natural Sciences and got a position at the Sarajevo School of Economics.

Finally, earning a decent living and having a secure job. Yet it didn’t make him happy, so he opted for another challenge. His interest shifted more to Economics and Applied Math so he completed his MA and PhD at the European University Institute, Florence. Playing games and jumping from one level to the next was apparently his passion, so he started researching game theory, networks, and patterns of employment.  He was teaching the Game Theory at the European University Institute in Florence, worked as Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Aix-Marseille School of Economics & GREQA, and is now an Assistant Professor at IMT Lucca.

Even though some of his publications took years to get published after long periods of research, it took him only a couple of minutes to share some of his findings. What does it take to get employed? What roles do networks play? How does the Game Theory work in the job market?

Maybe some of these insights help you find your next job!

#25 Igor Stjepanovic - What Difference Can You Make?

#25 Igor Stjepanovic - What Difference Can You Make?

At the age of 17 he narrowly escaped with his life, when one of the two buses that was transporting refugees Zivinice, Bosnia & Herzegovina to Germany was bombed. His life would never be the same. Being haunted by images of war, he felt a mix of guilt and gratitude for the gift of life and woke up every morning in Germany to work at a factory while finishing his high school studies. His life took a very positive turn when he moved to the “Lucky Country” - Australia.

He earned his degree in Computer Science and got a job at a local IT company. A few years later, Igor established not one, but three companies: “GIS People”, “Gruntify”, and one particularly interesting company “Open Declare” through which Australians ensure the transparency of donations for political campaigns. His ethics is led by a few simple rules: being on time, and what difference one can make. The business model he applies as an entrepreneur is based on income from his consumer instead of external investment. His hard work was rewarded with the Brisbane's Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2014 and brought him as far as SiliconValley, where he attended the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in 2016 hosted by President Barack Obama and the US Government to represent Australia.

Being on time and taking the first bus when feeling his homeland ultimately saved his life, but his ‘never give up attitude’ and determination are the driving force of his success today.
