18-year old School Board Candidate, Raymond Adderley

18-year old School Board Candidate, Raymond Adderley

Raymond Adderley joins me on Gamechangers LIVE, from the studio at Florida International University's College of Communications, Architecture, & the Arts!  Raymond is an 18-year old who ran for Broward County's School Board, and although he didn't win it, he is a very impressive young man that has a tremendously promising career ahead of him. I had the opportunity to get to know him and his story in this episode.  Thanks to Lenny Nelson for editing this episode.

Below is his Thank You to supporters from his campaign:

"Although Broward voters did not send me to the School Board, I’m not stopping my fight for our community. Seventeen months ago, I filed to run for Broward County School Board, against all odds. I was sixteen years old and a junior in high school. So many people told me no, but despite it all, I answered the call to serve my community. I am so grateful that so many Broward voters put their faith in me to represent them. I ran for School Board because I watched my father be shot in front of me in Miramar, when I was six years old. I learned in that moment what it was like to be voiceless. Throughout the campaign, I have fought to bring a voice to the voiceless. This has always been about our community and our movement to make necessary and long overdue change. I am not going anywhere. I will always be your fighter and your voice. The past few days have proven that we need more accountability and transparency. I will continue to fight for exactly that. We must work together, as a community, to ensure that all voices are being heard. This campaign sent shockwaves across the country on what young people are ready to do. My message to young people across the country is this: don’t take no for an answer. Keep on fighting. I will be with you every step of the way. Although this race comes to an end for me, I would not have made it this far without the help of this amazing community that I grew up in, my team, my friends, and my family. Thank you to anyone that believed in me, voted for me, or simply showed your support. I am forever grateful."

Madeline Pumariega, Miami Dade College's first female President and alumna on Gamechangers LIVE®

Madeline Pumariega, Miami Dade College's first female President and alumna on Gamechangers LIVE®

Madeline Pumariega is the first female president appointed to lead one of the nation’s largest educational institutions, Miami Dade College (MDC). Adding to the historic nature of this appointment is the fact that Pumariega is an alumna of MDC.

A Trailblazer In Academia

Her love for academics and service excellence began as a student at MDC and continued during her 20 years of service at the College in positions of ascending responsibility, culminating in her role as Wolfson Campus president. Prior to becoming MDC’s president, Pumariega was appointed the first female and Hispanic chancellor of the Florida College System (FCS). During her tenure, several of the FCS’s 28 colleges –– which serve 800,000 students –– rose in the rankings of U.S. News & World Report as well as by other national measures. Florida was also named No. 1 in higher education by U.S. News.

In 2019, Pumariega became the executive vice president and provost of Tallahassee Community College, where her innovative approaches advanced the College’s three core divisions: academic affairs, student affairs and workforce development. Pumariega helped lead the school during the unprecedented response to the COVID-19 pandemic and pivoted the college’s infrastructure to support virtual classroom instruction and student-teacher interaction. She also serves as affiliate professor of leadership at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.

A Champion for Youth

Serving the community outside of higher education, she was also previously the executive director of Take Stock in Children, a statewide nonprofit focused on breaking the cycle of poverty by helping students complete their high school education and advance into post-secondary education and careers. It was here that Pumariega pursued her passion for ensuring that students have a pathway toward upward economic mobility through educational opportunities.

A Catalyst For Transformation

In her new role as MDC president, Pumariega has championed a new strategic plan for the College developed with input from more than 1,000 stakeholders. The plan focuses on five key priorities: reimagining for student success; accelerating academic excellence and innovation; valuing a culture of care to advance student outcomes; fueling the talent needs of a global economy; and securing the future of the College.

She has now engaged hundreds of leaders and volunteers around these five key priorities, and this transformational work is well on its way at MDC.

Pumariega has also prioritized working with business partners to identify the skills needed by key industries and tailoring higher education programs to match those needs. This intentional forming of strategic alliances and job pathways between companies and MDC students accelerates each graduate’s ability to enter the workforce immediately.

Driving her relentless pursuit is the passion to develop leaders and build thriving communities. Pumariega clearly recognizes higher education’s role in transforming lives and communities, and is designing her presidency at MDC to position the College to deliver on its mission in a post-pandemic, technology-enabled world.

30 years – Chief Psychologist

Was in Europe

Then became Senior Medical Officer (7 months) – Israel peace keeping.

The following year, genocide in Rawanda.  Mass graves.   Flight surgeon.

Solidified interest in psychological trauma.

Post Grad in Psychiatry , Univ of Toronto

Wen to a Navy base in Halifax.   Many sailors had PTSD from recovery program.

Built out programs. 2006-7.  Evidence based treatment still isn’t solving the issue.

Kandahar – 2006-7.  IED’s.

NATO level meetings – virtual reality, psychedelics, biomarkers.

Retired last year.

To be a trauma therapist – need distance.  Life Guard principal.

Can you have too much empathy?  Trauma/loss is the root of a lot of mental illness. Early on as a kid, India / Pakistan – partition.    What men can do to each other.   How do we disconnect ourselves morally, emotionally, to allow this to happen.

It’s both with the perpetrator and the victim.   How powerful the mob can be.  Nobody takes responsibility, no soul.

Intellectually as a psychiatricist it’s.  Medicine quiets the noise but the psychotherapy helps you make sense of the trauma.

Can anyone have PTSD.... is the extreme reaction to a trauma. Overwhelms my ability and gets stuck....comes back as nightmares and flashbacks....set up avoidance behaviors, then I become hypervigilant.

Lifetime prevalence is 7-8%.

Every single person has a lifechanging event.  You can’t unring the bell.  In his POV, it makes you disengaged...   after trauma you can still develop depression, or abuse drugs,

Moral injury, what you did or didn’t do.   First responders –

Imagine me with 400 people behind me – Army

What are the things we can do as self care.

Empathy and Kindness – When you shut off your emotional ties because you don’t want to feel pain.  But you can still have kindness....but being absorbed in the other person’s could make you drown as well.

Vulnerability –

Only way to treat the trauma

Best thing and worst thing in your life – memories become fuzzy.  But PTSD memories don’t.  Combat veteran won’t remember what he had for breakfast but remembers every detail about the event.

Bring them out, process them, it’s difficult therapy, but confronts it,

Psychedelics – new networks and new meaning given to the trauma.  Medicine associated psychotherapies.

Smoking cessation – tried quitting, 6-7 times. They know it’s bad.  How does one does of psyilocibin stick, even if it’s not an original

Demistify the mystical experience. Certain networks in the brain, seems to have changes that last weeks to months.....there’s an opening where our perception of self changes.

Ego loss and ego death. If I feel guitl and shame from sexual abuse and that trauma has defined who I am, the trip allows you to build a new ego.    How the parts of the brain talks to each other is more important.

Loss doesn’t have to be

Every generation tries to be better.   But how do we compartmentalize and not allow those events to define us.

Gamechangers LIVE featuring Daniel Bouza

Gamechangers LIVE featuring Daniel Bouza

In 2009, Daniel Bouza was unhappily working in a construction and engineering firm when he decided to make a change and pursue his passion. He left his hometown of Miami to attend the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City with an eye toward employment at the famed Gotham Bar & Grille. Bouza got his wish and was soon working as a line cook at the famous New York spot but not before spending his first three months at the restaurant shelling chickpeas for no pay. Bouza then moved on to BLT Bar & Grill in the Financial District. It was there that he met Chef Rodelio Aglibot, A.K.A. The Food Buddha. Bouza began working as a consultant with the acclaimed toque and opened multiple restaurants around the world.

Missing the kitchen, Bouza took the Head Chef job at The Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch in Beaver Creek, Colorado. After a year working on the slopes of Beaver Creek Mountain, Bouza took a trip to Hawaii and was lured to stay by the beauty and magic of the island of Lana’i. During his tenure as Sous Chef at Nobu Lana’i, Bouza found a passion for Hawaiian-styled and Asian inspired foods such as the poke bowl and bao buns.

Bouza found his way back to Miami and after some time working under Makoto Okuwa at the Chef’s upscale, Japanese namesake eatery in Bal Harbour, decided to concentrate on his dream project, PokéBao. Inspired by a tiny surf shack in Lana’i that served poké to guests lining around the block, PokéBao was born when Bouza had the idea to combine two delicious appetizers – poke bowls and bao buns – and serve them in a chef-driven, fast casual environment.

Unfortunately, in March 2020, Chef Daniel Bouza decided to step down as Chef/Owner of PokéBao due to the Coronavirus Pandemic but he didn’t stop there. After many years working alongside with renowned chefs around the world and with the experienced he gained, he wanted to keep showcasing his talents without any limitations to the menu. He has continued to bring his flavor and talent into the private catering market creating menus specifically catered to private client’s palate. He now offers private caterings at clients’ home ranging from hand-made pasta to artfully designed traditional Japanese Omakase plates.
