Seed Starting Tips, Tricks, & Supplies

Mind Body Garden

Hardening off Seedlings before Transplanting
Now that the final frost has passed, it's time to plant your seedlings out in the garden! But before you get planting - have you hardened off your seedlings? If you're wondering what that is, you're not alone. Most gardeners probably don't do it, but it can help increase your plants' survival rates and set you up for the best garden yet. Hardening-off seedlings is essentially exposure-therapy to the real world. Most seedlings are grown in a nice, cozy environment with consistent light, consistent watering, and consistent temperatures - this is not the case with the Great Outdoors as it threatens your plants lives with light that is 10x more powerful than any LED, temperatures that swing wildly, and not to mention the wind, bugs, rabbits, or squirrels that may be waiting to strike. When we harden plants off, we will begin exposing them to the real world for about a week before doing a complete transition to outdoor life. You will want to start off with a small amount of time, let's say an hour, and then gradually increase the time the seedlings spend outdoors until you think they're ready to make the move. Hope you enjoyed the podcast & please let me know if you have any questions & I'll be happy to help!

Staying Sane in a Crazy World
In today's episode of Mind Body Garden I talk about how to stay sane in this crazy world we are living in. When I began this podcast, I didn't intend for it to spiral into maintaining a positive perspective during quarantine from the Coronavirus situation - but I know it's on a lot of people's minds and the thing that is threatening everyone's mental health. For me, having a morning routine has greatly helped me to stay sane & happy despite the monotony & uncertainty of the times we are living in. My morning routine involves writing Morning Pages (3 pages of stream of consciousness writing), and then ideally it would follow with creating content - either a podcast or a blog. Lately I have been waking up late and rushing my morning routine - often missing the podcasting or other tasks that I want to complete. I find that not executing on something that I planned on doing is more of a drag on my psyche than anything else, so I knew that it was time to reclaim the morning routine - and my positive perspective. What do you do to maintain perspective & find comfort in these crazy times?

Soil Health: Gardening in Raised Beds, Containers, & Growing in the Soil
As we prepare to plant our gardens out for the season, there are a few options for how you can garden this year. In this podcast I talk about the pros & cons of 3 different types of gardening: Growing in the Soil Growing in Raised Beds Growing in Containers (or in my case, Root Pouches & Grow Bags) There are challenges for each type of gardening, but you have to find the benefits that help you & your situation the most. I found that I needed to grow in Raised Beds or Root Pouches to save my plants from wet feet, diseases & fungus that live in my soils, and from the seasonal attack of grubs, weeds, and whatever else nature can throw your way. Hope this podcast helps you & would love to hear from you if you have any questions or anything I can do to help you grow your best garden this year!

Tips 4 Starting a Garden
In this podcast I talk about what I've been doing for the last month of lockdown and how I am staying sane. A lot of it revolves around gardening - something that I was obsessed with before all of this chaos happened in the world. Now that it has happened, tons of people are wanting to grow their own food and become self-sustainable. Starting a garden can be intimidating but I hope to guide you through the process of starting a garden whether you are growing from seed, or planting directly in the ground. Gardening can be intimidating when you consider all the factors - watering the plants, fertilizing them, making sure they get enough light. And all of that is just while they are seedlings, wait until you plant everything out in the garden and have to worry about pests like bugs, squirrels, rabbits, and deer! My goal through this podcast was to break down some of the stigma around the amount of work it takes to garden. It does take "work", but a better word for it would be "care". It requires a great deal of care & intentional acts that promote growth and help the plants to flourish. April is creeping to a close and gardening is on everyone's mind as we wonder what the future holds with the situation revolving around us currently. I think that uncertainty, a "prepper instinct", and the need to be self-sustainable is driving people to want to provide more for themselves - a big part of this is through Gardening. Let me know what I can do to help you grow your best garden yet! MAKE AMERICA GARDEN AGAIN

Fitness Tips with Adam: Modifying your Workouts for Quarantine
It has been a long time coming, but I was finally able to record a podcast with my brother Adam Neth. Adam is a personal trainer, natural bodybuilder, and has a complete passion & obsession with Fitness. On today's podcast I interview Adam and dive into his origin story to learn more about how he got interested in weight lifting and what he is doing now - working as a personal trainer at a gym, plus he has his own personal clients that he manages through online training. After that we talk about some of the modifications you can make to your home workouts to make them effective - even if you don't have a ton of equipment like machines or dumbbells. If you're interested in learning more about the different lifting programs that you can implement to build strength, power, and muscle - tune in and make sure you have a notebook handy because Adam is super knowledgable and there's a lot to learn in this episode! Hope you enjoy the podcast & drop your questions in the comments - or call into the station if you listen on Anchor - and we'll be happy to help & elaborate in a future podcast as well!

Garden Renovation, Transplanting Seedlings & Morning Pages Creativity Flow
Lately my mornings have been preoccupied by writing my Morning Pages, so I have neglected the podcast somewhat, but I begin this episode by talking about my new creative outlet.  After that - it's all gardening! Last weekend my dad brought the tiller down to me and I began a massive overhaul of the garden that involved moving all 250+ Root Pouches out of the garden, dumping the busted pots, removing old ground cover, tilling the soil, re-grading, and finally re-covering the garden with 3 ounce woven ground cover fabric. This will serve as a weed barrier that should last 5-7 years, plus it gives the garden a beautiful, clean aesthetic that has been lacking for quite some time. Best of all - no more weeding. I finish up the episode talking about the plants that I just transplanted yesterday, March 28th. Those included: lettuce, spinach, arugula, broccoli, & green onions. Although I'm in growing zone 6, and could get frosts up until May 15th, I'm taking my chances with the mild spring - plus these crops are all very cold hardy - and if all else fails, I've got frost blankets as a backup! Let me know if you have any questions or anything I can do to help with you gardening season this year! And I would be humbled if you enjoyed the podcast and could subscribe to my channel - Mind Body Garden!

Ground Cover in the Garden
This warm start to March has me itching to get out in the garden! It's still just a lil bit early, but with the warmer weather approaching, now's the Time to prep your garden for the growing season. For me this means grading my garden so that it is more level & has the proper drainage. Once I get the land situated, I'll be covering it with woven ground cover fabric. This will completely eliminate weeding, give me a grid to space plants without a tape measure, and it'll provide a much cleaner aesthetic to the garden. Today's episode dives into these topics and more of what's growing in the garden and in the project portion of my brain 👨‍🌾💪🌱

5 gardening questions from quora
In today's episode I dive into 5 gardening questions that I pulled from Quora. These questions range from what I'm growing in my garden this year to what you can plant in a 10 x 10 garden plot, and some tomato growing tips as well. In the last question I talk about how to make money from your garden. This then leads me down a path of how Gardening 4 Gains was started, the origin stories and how I feel that I've optimized my growing operations this year in order to maximize the efficiency of the size of the Garden in relation to what customers actually want. The biggest differentiator will be timing harvests out for seasonality and ensuring continual harvests this season - which is something that I've executed rather poorly on in the past. I hope this helps you with your gardening journey, but if you have specific gardening questions you want answered - let me know and I'll add it into the next episode 🎙️🌱

CSA Day is Here!
Today is officially known as CSA Day - the day to sign up for your CSA! CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture - essentially it involves paying a farmer ahead of the season for a bi-weekly box of fresh produce from my garden. This model allows the farmer to use the funds for seeds, land, and supplies in preparation for the season ahead. In today's episode I talk about the progress of the seeds I've planted and talk about the next few rounds of planting I have planned out. I also discuss the difference between the grow rack at AM Leonard (using fluorescent lights) versus the grow rack in my personal Plant Lab (Stratum LED light bars) 🌱💡

Pest Management in Wet Springs
The last week has been extremely wet here in Ohio and yesterday we got a few inches of snow ❄️ Despite spotty winter weather, we have had an extremely mild winter - warm temperatures and lots of moisture. In today's episode I talk about the effects this will have on the spring and summer gardening seasons and discuss a few ways that I plan on using to manage the pest populations naturally, organically, and using beneficial insects as much as possible 🐞🥊🦟

Sleep & the Meaning of Life
I talk a lot about my morning routines, but this week I have been focusing less on the time I wake up and more on the quality of the time I spend sleeping. Rather than force myself to get up and function on 6 hours of sleep, I have forced myself to set my alarm to allow for 7 and a half hours of sleep. Every single morning I have woken up before my alarm clock and have felt extremely refreshed & highly energetic and happy through the day. Aside from sleep I also casually slip in a little rant on the meaning of life 😁 hope you enjoy and would love to hear any feedback you have for the podcast - what do you wanna hear me rant more about?

Soil Mix & Tray Options for Seed Starting
Last week I planted the first seeds of the season and they're already popping up like crazy in the various trays I planted them in. In this episode I talk about the different seed starting soil mixes I'm using including Berger BM2 and PittMoss Plentiful. Pitt Miss is a super interesting product where they replace peat moss with recycled paper. It's a much more sustainable alternative to peat and seems to produce some healthy onion seedlings so far! And although I like the sustainability value prop of the Pitt Moss, I am obsessed with the quality and consistency of the Berger BM2 germination mix. I also talk about the various trays that I'm using for propagation including 72 and 288 cell plug trays, plus some more hydroponics-type of seed starting supplies such as the HydroFloat and Grow Plugs, and the Oasis Rootcubes.

Wow. Today was a rant for the books. I'm not sure what got into me but when I started talking about my new theme for the year, "Make America Garden Again", I got off on a tangent about putting in the work and then about doing things that you enjoy. Hope you enjoy this little rant and would be super humbled by your support for Gardening 4 Gains by purchasing a make America Garden again t-shirt from my website 😁🙏💪🌱

The CropBox & Gardening Advice
Don't you love those mornings where you actually wake up early & have time to do the things you wanna do? Today was one of those mornings for me. I kicked it off with Morning Pages while guzzling coffee, then I got down to business and started some seeds 😁 It's technically still a little early to start seeds, but I'm banking on a warm, mild spring, planting cold-tolerant crops, and I will be utilizing frost blankets and low tunnels once I plant everything outdoors. Something about this season feels so different - in a good way. I have a super clear plan, I've got the experience from the past few seasons, and more than anything, I believe in the mission and can't wait to get digging in the dirt this spring! 👨‍🌾💪🌱

Fighting False Fears & Seed Starting for my CSA
Today's podcast was meant to be a focus on the seeds that I'm planting for the CSA today, but as per usual, I went off on a tiny tangent at the beginning of the episode - but a much-needed one! In the rant I talk about my Morning Pages milestone - today was day 50 of starting my day off with writing 3 pages of stream-of-consciousness writing. This practice has helped elaborate on half-baked thoughts or assumptions and actually tease out the truth. I think that so often in our lives we build up these false beliefs from our fears & judgements, but we don't question them. Morning Pages has helped me cut through the noise and has given me permission to be creative and to spend time on developing myself. After my rant, I talk about my big plans for the garden today - planting broccoli, lettuce, spinach, greens and other early-season veggies. We can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel of winter and it begins with the seeds we plug today 💪🌱 Plug walk! 😂👨‍🌾

Acting on your Creative Urges
In today's episode I talk about my big weekend project - collecting all of the ideas I have written in various notebooks, notepads, notes apps, or scraps of paper and FINALLY gathering them into one conglomeration of content & ideas. From here I can pick and choose from a vast list of ideas or I can begin to build a framework and a blueprint for my content topics moving forward. What this means is that I am finally creating instead of just collecting ideas into lists - the most important thing to is act on your creative urges, be the change you want to see in the world, create the content that you can't find. This all distills down into providing content that adds value to people's lives through information, entertainment, and inspiration 🧘‍♂️🏋️‍♂️👨‍🌾💪🌱

Prioritizing Big Projects & Busy Work
In today's episode I talk about prioritizing your work and your day - and really the importance of doing things for YOU instead of doing things to seek approval. We live in a world with a whirlwind of demands placed on us by society and by our Self. Listen in to hear how I deal with that distinction between what goals I have set and what is expected of me - and some hacks to make everyone happy 🤓

Cultivating your Interests into Passions
In today's podcast I talk about cultivating your interests into passion - and my take on how things develop from hobbies into side gigs and obsessions. My current obsessions revolve around Mind, Body, and Garden and in this episode I talk about how I have taken them from an interest into something that I want to improve upon for the rest of my life 💪🌱

Getting a Head Start on Leafy Greens
It's been 60 degrees in Ohio for the past couple days but today we're back to snow & ice - but that isn't killing my excitement for spring, it's just fueling it! In today's episode I talk about the mild winter we have been having and how it's tempting me to get leafy greens and cold hardy crops planted out early. It can be done with the help of low tunnels and frost blankets, but if you screw up, you could lose your whole crop 😭 Right now I'm thinking about getting lettuce, spinach, arugula, mizuna, and other Asian greens started in seed trays so that we can jumpstart the CropBoxes this year and maybe even get a few earlier-than-expected harvests 🥬 And BTW - this is the first call for all CropBoxers or people interested in receiving a subscription box of fresh veggies & herbs from the Garden of Gains 💪🌱 if you're in the Piqua area and looking for fresh, organically-grown produce - let me know, spots are limited!

Early Spring and CropBox Plans
The groundhog didn't see his shadow, so that means we've got an early spring on its way to us! 🙏🌱 In today's episode I talk about our spring-like weather, how it's getting me amped for planning the Garden of Gains & how I'm ready to provide the best CSA in the Miami Valley with my CropBoxes 🌱🍉🌶️🍅🍈🥕🥒🥬🥔 In addition to talking about what I'm growing, I also talk about how I planned my garden, and the difficulty & intricacy of planning a CSA

Don't Start your Tomatoes too Soon!
I am chomping at the bit to get some seeds planted, but I have to keep reminding myself to slow down and be patient. In the past I have started tomatoes too early and then run into issues with plugs becoming rootbound or I'll have to do extra work with transplanting into larger pots. I also talk about my plans to experiment with planting tomato seeds directly in 4 inch CowPots and testing that growth against the plants grown in the plug trays. I also talk about the joy of growing a garden versus the pressure of growing for a CSA - though this year I feel much more confident because I have created an elaborate strategy & plan that will ensure optimization of processes and a solid harvest all year round.

Growing Lettuce Indoors with Hydroponics
Yesterday I started my first seeds of the season - Evergreen White Bunching Onions 🌱🌱 Needless to say, I'm getting the urge to plant more seeds. In today's episode I talk about my next experiment - growing full heads of lettuce indoors using a simple hydroponics growing tray called the Nurture HydroFloat. What else should I try to grow from seed to harvest indoors? 🤔🤔🤔

Onions & Experimentation
In today's episode we're back to planning the garden and I talk about my goals for complete organization in the garden so that I can collect data and experiment properly with new fertilizers 🧪🔬👨‍🔬🧬🌱 This has always been my aim but once you get out in the garden, wilderness takes over and planning seems pointless - but we're gonna stick to it this year! Today's the first experiment and the first seeds I will be sowing this season - onions 🌱🌱🌱 My experiment involves growing seeds in a 288 cell tray and a 72 cell tray to see the differences in growth, development, and germination rate. Stay tuned for updates along the way as we continue with the How to Start a Garden from Seed Series - and let me know what gardening questions I can answer for you! 👨‍🌾

Wedding Planning or Garden Planning?
Today's episode was meant to be about "planning" in general but once I got talking, I got sucked down the rabbit hole of wedding planning that is currently engulfing me and Kyla's lives 😂 In today's episode I talk about our search for a venue and some of the winners we have visited so far. Outside of the technical stuff, I also talk about what a wedding is really about - marrying the person you love. We want to make our day as special as possible, but not at the risk of taking on loans and paying a ridiculous amount for one day. In this episode I dive into the fun of wedding planning & what I think getting married should be all about 💒

Unboxing my Secret Seed Order
Last week Kyla brought me home an envelope full of top secret seeds for this year's garden. In today's episode I open them and give my 2 cents on each seed packet. I wasn't sure how this type of episode would work out but it was kind of exciting not knowing what I was going to pull out of the packet and what we will be growing in the garden this year. Of course we've got a few varieties of tomatoes, peppers, but there's also some unique Insta-worthy plants that are gonna be growing in the Garden of Gains. There's a ton of great seeds at Gurney's and I can't wait to get planting!

Starting a Garden: Seeds, Soil, and Supplies
In today's episode, we finally start getting into the nitty gritty of Starting a Garden from Seed. We will be beginning with the topics of Seeds, Soil, and Supplies - and that's exactly what I dive into in this episode! First I talk about the importance of figuring out your Growing Zone. From there you can work backwards to figure out when you should be planting your seeds. If you're in Zone 6 like me, you probably won't be starting seeds for a few more weeks, so now's the perfect time to round up your seeds & supplies so you're not scrambling later on. Secondly, you need to get your seeds! There are 3 main companies that I have gone through in the past: Gurney's, Burpee, and Johnny's Seeds. All of these are highly reputable companies - it just comes down to preference. And it's important to note that there are a BUNCH of great suppliers out there! Lastly after discussing seed selection, I dive into the supplies that you will need. Primarily this will include seed trays, plug trays, inserts, and I talk about my favorite hydroponic seed starting kit and briefly touch on Soil & Soilless Media Mixes - that will be the next blog in this series and I will be diving into Soil health, Soilless mixes, Soil Amendments, and more! Also, if you're curious where I'm getting my supplies & seeds, keep your eyes peeled for a blog that details all of that information and includes links for easy access to what we're using in the Garden of Gains 🌱💪

Stop Regretting, Start Doing
Late starts and missed moments of opportunity are easy to blame your procrastination on, but I've found the most important thing is to keep pressing onward. You can't beat yourself up over what you did wrong, you just gotta keep moving forward and accomplish the next things on your list. We either want it all or want nothing - what is that all about? Set your intentions and most important goals for the day and find a way to make it happen 👊

Morning Routines, Self Care, & Therapy
Morning routines are either put on a pedestal or dragged through the mud, but I've been having great success with my routine and it's helped me build on my goals by being consistent. Today's episode talks about the importance of setting an intention for something you HAVE to do - for me that is writing my Morning Pages. Morning Pages are a stream of consciousness writing designed to get you out of creative funks and enhance your creativity. I talk about why I think morning routines are important for me and how writing and art is a form of therapy because of the expression and exploration of emotions that happens. What are you morning routines and how do you stick to them?

Rock Climbing and the Importance of Having Fun
After being at a trade show from Wednesday to Friday, I didn't think I would be doing much the rest of the weekend - but I'm so glad I did! Saturday I went indoor rock climbing at Urban Krag in Dayton with my brother Adam. We didn't know what to expect but we ended up having a blast, just climbing and playing like little kids 🧗‍♂️🧗‍♂️ Needless to say I think we found a new hobby and activity we can do together besides lifting 🏋️‍♂️ hiking 🥾⛰️ and video games 🎮🕹️ Other than that me and Kyla went out to eat with friends on Sunday and are finally following through on our resolutions to hang out with friends and family more this year. Hope you had a great weekend and have an awesome Monday! 👊

Day 2 Recap of MANTS Trade Show
Day two of MANTS was another great one and even busier than the first day! I felt much more on top of my game after getting a full night's sleep and had a full day of talking shop and networking with growers and suppliers. Today's episode talks about the connections I made, the importance of trade shows and networking, and I came away with a few business ideas for Gardening 4 Gains as well. The show may be coming to an end but that just means the growing season is getting closer and I can't wait to get plants in the ground!

MANTS Day 1 Recap
It's a late one podcast today but that's because I had to wake up before 3am to catch a flight to the MANTS Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show. Today's episode is a recap of day 1 of the "masterpiece of trade shows" on its 50th anniversary. I talk about what I like and dislike about trade shows, my mission at shows, and why MANTS is the best show in the industry.

Morning Routines & Unlocking Creativity
Today's episode is focused on the importance of morning routines and how I'm using mine to unlock creativity. Recently I began the practice of mindfulness meditation and I have also started a creative course called The Artist's Way which involves writing "morning pages". Morning Pages are done every morning upon waking and essentially is a 3-page stream of consciousness writing - no topics, no flow, no sense-making necessary. The important thing is to Do, to write despite what the Censor in your head tells you. What do you do to unblock yourself creatively? Have you ever tried Morning Pages or read The Artist's Way? Would love to hear your thoughts on what gets your creative juices flowing 🧘‍♂️👨‍🎨👨🏻‍💻👨‍🌾

Garden Plans & Growing my Gardening Business
It may be January, but that doesn't mean the garden isn't on my mind! In today's episode I talk about the crops that I am focusing on growing: tomatoes, bell peppers, potatoes, root veggies like carrots, turnips, and beets, and then lettuce, spinach, leafy greens, and herbs. Last year I wasted a lot of space by testing out veggies that took up space, and didn't perfect up to expectations. I believe that my focus on succession planting will ensure a continuous harvest of greens, while the focus on long-term storage veggies like carrots, potatoes, turnips, and beets will ensure that we will have a continuous supply of those hearty veggies for customers. The next step for my garden is to lay out the full propagation plan so that I can understand the planting dates, space required for each crop, potential yields & harvest dates - and to figure out how many people I can feed from my 1,000 square foot backyard urban garden. This year I am putting much more focus on building my business & the products/services I offer. Currently my main product is the CSA (weekly veggie subscription box which I call the CropBox), but I want to expand into apparel, and ancillary gardening products - or maybe a product of the garden like herbal teas & spice blends. Also, today's episode was the first time I have recorded with a professional microphone - the Yeti Blue. I haven't listened back to much of the audio, but excited to take the podcast game to the next level! Either way & needless to say - I'm super psyched to grow Gardening 4 Gains in 2020!

The Importance of Resolutions & Goal Setting
For the past few years I have actually written down my resolutions and I believe it helps me achieve the goals that I set for myself. Not only do I write them down, but do a monthly check-in to see how I'm doing and redirect course as needed. In today's episode I talk about how having an open mind is critical to allowing yourself set goals and to pursue them. I also talk about my resolutions ranging from daily rituals of mindfulness meditation and writing my Morning Pages to things we want to do to the house. Do you set resolutions every year? How do you hold yourself accountable?

Ring-ing in the New Year
We started 2020 off with a bang 💥 I asked Kyla to marry me in Tawawa Park on New Year's Day - and she said yes! It was a long time coming but everything worked out perfectly from the weather to the sunset and her beautiful reaction 🤗 so excited to spend the rest of my life with my soul mate 👩🏻‍🌾👨‍🌾

What is the ROI of Trade Shows?
Last week I attended the Great Lakes Expo in Grand Rapids. This show is more focused on fruit & vegetable production and the small farmer looking to diversify their operations to create more opportunities for profit and attracting customers. Typically my main goal when attending trade shows is to find new suppliers or products, but there is just as much, if not more, value in attending the education sessions. In today's episode I talk about the education sessions I attended, some things I've learned, the ROI of those insights and trade shows in general, and some new types of crops I want to plant for the CSA next year as a result 🌼🌻🌺🌹🌷

Accountability & Mind-Body Connection
In today's episode I am getting back to creating consistent content daily because I've been feeling so good lately that I haven't felt compelled to create. Not out of lack of inspiration, but just the fact that there are more important things in the world, like your life and your happiness 😁 I'm testing out a newer format of discussing Mind, Body, and Garden but really hone in on Mind-Body Connection and how it is all based on accountability & taking responsibility for how you feel. If you blame people or things for how you feel, you immediately surrender your power and have no chance at happiness. It isn't until we realize that we color the canvas of our perspective & outlook by taking accountability that we can truly work towards being Happy 🧘‍♂️

The Diet of Happiness
In today's episode I talk about the reason why I haven't been posting on social or producing podcasts. A couple weeks ago I was admitted to the hospital with what I thought was appendicitis but ended up being a bacterial infection (no real specific diagnosis and that's kind of another reason I've been holding off on talking about this). The cause could be tied back to heredity, food I ate, a bacterial or viral infection, but the only thing I can control is my diet, so that's the plan to manage this moving forward. Despite the abundance of restrictions on this low residue diet, I feel 1000x better than before. It's almost as if a fog has lifted and I'm only now seeing clearly for the first time 💡👀

Garden Planning, Bonsai Trees, & the Importance of Shoulder Mobility
Today's episode begins with a focus on the body and the importance of shoulder mobility. I go through my mobility routine & talk about how I feel like being more mobile is allowing me to build more muscle 💪🌱 I also talk about my plans to plant Microgreens & a few trays of tree seeds that I plan to plant in my landscaping or sell as bonsai starters - oak, sycamore, boxwood, spruce, & baobab and I may have a few others 🌱🌱🌱 Enjoy this little rant and if you have a favorite plant, let me know 👇 what it is so I can see if I can grow it in my garden!

Morning Lifts & Business Plan Part 2
I started my morning off with a wild goose chase for coffee filters, but was forced to settle on some gas station coffee & Tim Hortons. That fueled my first morning lift in a while and I feel amazing! Nothing better than morning exercise to wake the body & mind 💪🌱 After talking about the lift, I go back into part 2 of my business plan for Gardening 4 Gains and elaborate on my vision, products & services I plan to offer, and where I see things developing in the future

Finding your Purpose through Struggle & Business Plant Part 1
All year I felt like I have struggled with finding my true purpose for Gardening 4 Gains but I feel like I am finally figuring it out. In today's episode I talk about struggle and how it can either define you or challenge you to become better. I think a lot of it depends on how you frame things in life and whether you take things personally, or just accept the world for what it is; a puzzle to be solved or a game to be played 🎰 My rant on purpose leads into pivoting from gardening into winter time planning and planting the seeds of my business plan. Right now I'm just growing all the food I produce in my backyard garden that is less than 1000 square feet. Since I don't have the capital for land at the moment, my business plan is about converting vacant lots in Piqua into gardens. Basically I'm going to colonize this town with gardens to scale my business and fund my dreams to buy land and/or greenhouses 💪🌱👨‍🌾

Benefits of Microgreens & the Power of Branding
Now that freezing temperatures are the norm, it's time to start growing Microgreens on the Grow Rack 🌱 I love Microgreens for the bursts of flavor and the fact that they're so nutrient dense, but more than anything I just need some fresh homegrown veggies in my life! After talking about the benefits of Microgreens, I talk about the other reason why I love fresh veggies - the way it makes me feel. I feel healthy, clean, and powerful and that's a feeling I want to spread to the world! Those feelings are the power of branding and exemplify exactly what I'm trying to do with Gardening 4 Gains - spread healthy living & happiness through fresh organically grown food 👨‍🌾

Judgement & Doubt can Strengthen or Poison You
In today's episode I go off about judgement by people, but mostly talk about the phantom judgement that we all create in our heads in relation to the proverbial "they". We live in the most connected society that had ever existed and I believe it's creating a ton of anxiety because the human mind is not tuned to realize the shear scale of the entire world, it is more oriented to the community or the Self. And in this episode I focus on the Self because it is all we can control in this world but we are creating boundaries for ourselves and reasons why not, or why we can't, instead of working to overcome our doubts, fears, and imposter syndrome to blossom into everything you are meant to become 🌱🌳🧘‍♂️

Belief is the Foundation for Success
Today on Mind Body Garden I talk about the weekend and things me & Kyla are doing to improve our living spaces 🧹🧼🌱 For the Mind I talk about my obsession with buying books, and how I'm finally starting to actually read them - for pleasure but mainly for pumping my big head with more knowledge 🤓 Then I talk about Garden - my vision for Gardening 4 Gains' expansion by colonizing vacant lots in Piqua with gardens 🌱👨‍🌾🌱 and how belief has pumped Kyla & me full of optimism and led us to finally taking action on our dreams 🌠

The Power of Growing your own Food
We got our first freeze of the season last night so growing outdoors is completely done for this year! In today's episode I talk more about how a local networking event sparked more belief in myself and my super small business. It's easy to downplay things that you're doing and it was so refreshing to see how many people had a genuine interest in my Veggie Boxes and my mission to colonize Piqua with gardens and greenhouses. I also talk more about the reason behind me growing and wanting to spread the power that fresh veggies give your mind & body 🧘‍♂️

Pints & Preneurs
Last night me & Kyla attended an event called Pints & Preneurs at 311 Drafthouse in Piqua. I was hesitant about attending because my business is so small, but thankfully Kyla dragged me out of the house and we made a ton of quality connections with local entrepreneurs! This event was exactly what we needed though - it's great to connect with people but it's also HUGE when you get validation of your idea or interest in your products and services. Thank you to Piqua Chamber of Commerce, Piqua Development office, and Launch Dayton for such an awesome mixer!

2020 Vision for the Garden
This weekend marked the end of the 2019 garden season ☹️ I harvested the last of the ghost, Habanero, jalapeños, and tomatoes with plans to make a big batch of hot sauce and then ripped out the plants with plans to rearrange the garden for an optimal 2020 growing season. Today's episode talks about the cleanup, lessons learned this year and then dives into the plans for optimizing production of tomatoes using the lower and lean method 🌱🍅

Purpose & Plans for Gardening 4 Gains
Morning walks with the dogs have been a game changer for me this week and I feel like it's really helping me to execute on my other goals & aspirations. In today's podcast I talk about my dreams to buy the greenhouses that are for sale in my hometown and begin to outline my business plan and purpose. This is the start of a series of podcasts I'm doing on the Gardening 4 Gains Business Plan. Though it will be primarily focused on my business, I will still be weaving in gardening tips, tricks, and knowledge - and probably end up being a much more focused gardening podcast as a result! Hope you enjoy and if you have any tips for me in writing this business plan or ways to build my business, comment, dm me or call into the station - would love to hear your thoughts!

Happiness is the Product of Doing
I had a small revelation over the weekend that I think is going to lead to a ton of Happiness & productivity down the road. Today's episode dives into the importance of just doing - executing on the goals you set for yourself without putting them on a pedestal. Forget about perfection, dive into brainstorming, creating & sharing what's boiling up in your brain 🧠⚛️

Evolution of the Garden & the Self
Today's episode dives into the current status of the garden, plans for fall and winter, and lessons that I learned throughout the year. From there I launch into the reason why the garden is scaling so slowly and the importance of patience and Self-awareness in growing a garden & a business. Things get a little passionate later in the episode so I'll apologize now to all the Mammaws & Grandma's for the language 😄

Books I'm Reading & Rants on Psychology, Technology & More
In today's episode I talk about my reactions to several of the books I've been reading including You Are Not a Gadget by Jaron Lanier, A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking, and I'm currently reading the collected works of Carl Jung who was a psychologist who studied under Sigmund Freud. The topics range from technology and its effect on people & design, a basic and understandable explanation of physics and quantum mechanics, and Jung is great because he's all about the unconscious, the subconscious, and all sorts of mystical areas of study. Hope you enjoy this little rant and the new look, feel, and structure of Mind Body Garden 🧠🏋️‍♂️🌱

Creativity & the Importance of Art
Not sure if it's all the reading I've been doing or me & Kyla's new obsession with making TikTok videos, but I've been obsessed with the thought of creativity and making things that matter in the world. In this episode I talk about creativity and the importance of art in all aspects of life from evoking emotion to challenging perceptions and how it enhances life. What creative things do you like to do? And how do you get in a creative mindset? It's funny because I think reading helps fuel my creativity by challenging my thoughts and forcing me to internalize & rationalize it, and then ultimately synthesize it into my own form of creative expression. Would love to hear what creative outlets you like to play around in, let's hear em! 👇😁

Funky Peppers, Fall Planting, and What I've Learned this Year
We finally got some rain this weekend and the garden was loving it! After starting the year off with a ton of rain, we hardly got any throughout the summer - and summer pretty much just ended since we had 90 degree temps to kickoff October! Between the rain I got into the garden to harvest tomatoes, peppers, and Eggplant. They're all still producing heavy but I foresee that slowing down with the cooler days and near-frosty nights approaching. In this episode I talk about some of the funky variations of peppers in the garden (maybe from cross pollination?), I discuss the seeds I planted, and also talk about what I've learned from the garden this year in order to optimize and improve for next year. Also - if there's topics you want me to explore, or people I should interview - let me know! 👇

Why you need Hobbies & Passion Projects
Yesterday I started talking about the things I "need" in my life in order to stay healthy physically, mentally, & spiritually - so today I dive into those hobbies and why I'm passionate about them. Whether it's powerlifting or doing yoga, there's a place for hobbies and energy-channeling activities in our lives. With all the unnecessary stress, there's unnecessary energy being wasted as anxiety instead of being redirected into positive growth. What do you do to burn off steam & keep yourself sane?

Reading is Tilling the Cerebral Soil
Reading is something that I love to do but shy away from at times because of the time commitment involved. I just finished a book called "You are not a Gadget" by Jaron Lanier and talk about my experience with the book, how it helped open up my perspectives on online culture, and how the structure of programs can/do influence the outputs by users. Most importantly I think it solidified in my mind that it is easy to become swept away in the system and forget about who YOU are. I also dive into some of the existential challenges this book invoked & how I came to realizations about what I need in order to succeed in my day to day. Overall I think it's important to note that the design of the world is to flatten you out and make people "equal" but it is our uniqueness that define us & add flavor the world

My Burpee Trial & being selected as a Gardener of the Year
It's October and that means it's my month to be featured as a Burpee Gardener of the Year 🥳👨‍🌾 If you've followed me on Instagram then you've definitely seen pictures of the sweet habaneros, crazy looking purple Brussels sprouts, & that cute little yellow squash - all of those plants were new varieties that I got to test out from Burpee as a part of the gardener of the year program 👨‍🔬🧪💪🌱 In this episode I talk more about the wide variety of plants they sent me, how they grew in the garden, and I also talk about some of the connections I've made along this journey. I'm so thankful for this experience & opportunity and I just don't want the season to end! If you wanna hear more about what got me into gardening & some funny/embarrassing facts, head over to Burpee's website to check out the blog feature they did on me. The Art of Just Doing & Being Yourself
Social Media has been on the chopping block since day 1 - they say it is changing people's behaviors, it is designed to make us addicted, or it's threatening democracy. But I think we lazily blame the platform when it all goes back to those creating & reacting to inputs into the system - simply put, people are problem, not social media. We have an extreme need to demonize the medium because we don't want to believe that the poison spewing out on Facebook & Twitter is a product of our sick minds, but it's because of how software engineers designed the algorithm. In this episode I'm not on as much of a high horse as the preceding sentences, but go into reasons I took a break from social and what was going on in my mind, not what's wrong with the platform. How do you express your creativity? And what holds you back from being 100% You?

Home Improvement, Ideas for a Morning Show, & Self-awareness
I love the weekends for relaxation, but it's even more satisfying after doing some much needed housework & reorganization of the furniture 🛋️ This also gave me a few ideas for how to reorganize my content and potentially create something to provide more value than the podcast - a Morning Show. In this podcast I talk about my ideas for the show, how I can execute on it, and some directions for new content segments. If there's anything you want to hear/see on the show, let me know! 📣

Mind Body Garden & the Journey to Cultivate Happiness
In today's episode I take a slightly different route than the usual gardening questions, tips, or updates and wanted to dive into something I've been sitting on for a while - Mind, Body, Garden. That is my mantra for life and it's all reliant on Happiness - doing things that truly make you happy & setting yourself up for a happy life by caring for those most basic principles of Mind, Body, Garden. I love growing plants, but my true passion is growing Happiness, and my mission is to sow those seeds as far and wide as I can. It's time to cultivate Health & Happiness in the Garden of Life! 🧠🏋️👨‍🌾

Dog Training, Biking, & Self-improvement
Today I talk about our nice relaxing weekend and some of the projects we tackled including our attempt to better train our dogs. We always chalk their behavior up to being rescues but then we decided we needed to make a change so we started watching Dog Whisperer and we're basically pro dog psychologists 🤷‍♂️🐶🐶🤷‍♀️ I also talk about the insane amount of miles I've been biking in my quest to lose weight and just improve my overall health. Kyla and I also started making a change in our eating habits, trying to completely cut out the junk & I'm super excited where our journey to Self-improvement will take us! 📈

5 Ways I'm Going to make Money with my Business Gardening 4 Gains
I start this episode off by talking about a project I did today - taking cuttings of landscaping plants like boxwoods, Japanese maples, and hydrangeas. If I did it right, we'll have a ton of plants when spring rolls around! The main feature of this episode is talking about something I don't talk much a about - my business Gardening 4 Gains. It has been something that is slowly growing as I learn the ins & outs of farming & growing plants, but something I want to continue to diversify the income of so that I can eventually turn a side hustle into a living breathing thing of its own. I talk about my CSA and dive into 4 other ideas for expanding my business & funding the expansion of land 👨‍🌾🚜 Let me know your thoughts or if you have any ideas, gardening questions or anything else I can help with 😁

Stashing your Veggie Harvest, Year-Round Gardening in Zone 5, Growing Plants in Pots, & Allergies
Today's Garden Show dives into 5 more questions about gardening and covers a wide range of topics. First I talk about what veggies you can grow that store well over a long winter & how you can garden and grow fruits & vegetables year round in zone 5 or 6 🍎🍅🌶️🥕🥬I also talk about growing plants in pots and what happens if you keep a plant in a pot for a long time. And of course I had to talk about the magic of Root Pouches and fabric pots & how they're the best pots out there! I wrap things up with talking about gardening with allergies and some tips to reduce your suffering 🤧

Organic Weed Control, Tips for Beginning Gardeners, Tomatoes Cracking, & Eggshells in the Garden
Starting a garden can seem daunting, there's so much you need to know and so much to learn. In this episode I break down the basics for starting a garden and how it all depends on executing the foundations exceptionally well. I also talk about the benefits of eggshells in the garden and how they can help prevent tomatoes from cracking or developing blossom end rot (the black spots on the bottom of tomatoes, caused by a calcium deficiency) 🐣. Not only is calcium important, but so are things like silica, copper & other micronutrients and microbes that help make them available for uptake by the plants. I wrap this episode up talking about overseeding your lawn for winter - not something I'm an expert on, but I'm getting more interested in lawncare so I'll be diving into more on that as I learn 🤓

Poisonous Plants, Making Gains, & Eating Compost
We're keeping the Gardening Show running today with 5 more questions from Quora 🤔❓ Today we talk about poisonous plants, using gardening & housework as a means to getting fit, the economics and ROI of gardening, and Eating compost!? 🤐 (P.s. sorry Mom, I'll talk about bulbs and poinsettias tomorrow 😁)

House Plant Help, my Favorite Gardening Tools, & Keeping Pets out of the Garden
We're back to the Gardening Show 🎉👨‍🌾 Today we talk about why plants have different needs for water, light, care & just give some general tips for how to keep your houseplants alive 🌿 From there I talk about some of my favorite gardening tools & gadgets I use to make my gardening life 100x easier ✂️👨‍🔬 And it wouldn't be gardening without something else trying to get your veggies besides you, so I wrap this episode up with some of the ways we have kept our dogs out of the garden - and how we're trying to control those other 4-legged pests like rabbits and squirrels 🐰🐿️

Weekend Recharge, Relaxation, & Restoration
So, I was planning on answering some gardening questions on today's podcast, but got severely sidetracked talking about our relaxing & recharging weekend. The weekends are my favorite because me and Kyla are able to get so much done. This weekend we just chilled, caught up on housework, lifted some weights, gardened, and made some amazing beef stew packed with veggies from the garden. I think that weekends with a mixture of hard work & hard relaxation set the tone for the week. I'm super recharged and ready to tackle the week and all the things I want to accomplish - starting with the podcast and who knows where else the motivation will flow 🌊

5 Gardening Questions from Quora
Testing out a new format for a Gardening Show around questions I am getting from people on the app Quora. If you're not familiar, Quora is an app where people ask & answer questions. There's so many questions that I want to dive in on but typing it out takes too long, so here's my thoughts on: Growing with Hydroponics, Raised Bed Gardening, Maximizing Vegetable Yield, Flowers in the Garden, and talking about Nightshade plants 🌱🌱🌱 Let me know what gardening questions you want answered on the next episode! 🙉

Navigating the Trade War as a Product Manager
In today's episode I talk about my transition to my job as a Product Manager and some of the challenges that come along with it. I also dive into the Trade War with China and how that had disrupted supply chains and forced businesses to adapt to the ever-changing world. I think that the trade war has obviously hurt businesses in the short term, but I think it will also prove who the "real" businesses are in terms of how they adapt to the markets and are able to come out on top.

Speaking your Truths & Garden Experiments
There's a lot covered in this short episode but I start off giving some quick updates on the garden & a test I plan on running with my irrigation system vs hand-watering plants 💦🌱🌿 Outside of the garden I talk about some of the anxiety involved with posting on social media and how it's about your mindset and your own personal happiness & goals, not the platform itself. It's easy to get caught up in thought of "what should I post" but just know it's as simple as being yourself. When you realize what you're posting is for YOU, to display your Passions or thoughts, and is not for anyone else to judge, then you'll post freely 🙏🙌

The Best way to Fertilize the Garden
We had perfect weather this weekend to finish up some garden projects that I've been dragging out for far too long. The biggest one - completing the drip irrigation system. This allows us to provide targeted watering & fertilization to each Root Pouch - either with a gentle sprinkler-type of flow, or a slow drip. This is important because the water stays in the pots rather than running off into the ground, the plants are able to utilize more of the resources at the slow drip rate vs being overwhelmed by water from a watering wand 💪🌱 and we're able to inject fertilizers & microbial treatments straight into the irrigation system thanks to a simple fertilizer injector system called the Chapin Hydrofeed 💩🦠💦 In this episode I talk more about the benefits of this system, plans for the fall garden, & a Plant Lab update on growing Microgreens 🌱🌱🌱
August 19, 2019
Fertigation, Nutrient Management, & Asking for the Sale
We're inching closer to finishing up our irrigation system, but it keeps raining every single time I work on it! In this episode I dive into why I'm installing an irrigation system - to provide consistent and highly targetted nutrient and water levels and remove the complete reliance on Mother Nature. I also discuss the benefits of rain water, how pH helps with nutrient uptake, and planning for our Fall Garden. And even though the garden is bursting with growth, we're starting microgreens indoors again to jumpstart our CropBox offering and provide the most value we can for the remainder of the growing season. That leads into another big topic of Asking for the Sale and realizing you're bringing value, not being unrealistic or salesy. Really loving being back into the podcast flow! Let me know what other topics you want to hear some more about and I'll plug them into future podcasts!

Garden Business Goals
I've been pretty quiet for the past few weeks and I'm about to explode, so I had to spill some thoughts on the podcast this morning. We start off discussing why I've been quiet, what I've been up to in the garden of Life and some of the goals & aspirations that are running through my mind about gardening and how I envision my business evolving and blooming into something that can eventually stand on its own 🙏

Mind, Body, Garden & Knowing your Self
This summer has been a wild one so far. From buckets of rain to 100 degree days, you just never know what to expect 🤷‍♂️ In this episode I briefly talk about the impacts of weather on the garden, but then I talk about why I've been absent from podcasting for so long and how the passing of my Mam-maw has affected my perspective on life - in a good way. When someone lives a full life & leaves an amazing legacy you can't be depressed, you have to carry the torch to keep the flame alive 🗽

Vacation Recharge, Exploring your Passions, and Facebook Thoughts
Vacation has almost become a bad word in our hardworking society, but it is completely normal and necessary to continue to be productive, allow yourself to recharge, and generally to keep your sanity. In this episode I talk about why it's important to disconnect from work for short stints and force yourself to explore passions outside of work - go for a hike, paint a picture, get lost in the moment and forget about time for a while. To end the episode, I got on a little bit of a rant on how Facebook & Snapchat will use VR (virtual reality) to improve communications in our digital world, and how I think it will help eliminate bias and discrimination. Would love to hear your thoughts on the episode!

TotalGrow LED Grow Lights - Interview with Biologist Jeff Mastin
Yesterday I sat down with Jeff Mastin, Biologist for Venntis Technologies who is the maker of the TotalGrow LED Grow lights. In this episode we do a deep dive into the ever-evolving technology of LEDs, the biology & science of LED lighting for a wide range horticultural applications, and discuss where we see the industry going over the next 5-10 years. A lot of people think of cannabis, or growing in a basement or closet, when they hear talk about Grow Lights, but the fact of the matter is that almost ever grower can use them - it all depends on the crops you're growing and the goals you want to accomplish. If you're interested in learning more about TotalGrow LED Lights, drop me a comment or send me a message and I'll be happy to help! Or head over to AM Leonard's website to check out the options (and stay tuned for new products that will be dropping soon)!

Humic DG, Organic Fertilizer, & New Product Thoughts
Allergies & bad time management have kept me from podcasting recently, but I'm back for another rant about Organic Gardening & ideas I have to expand my brand & business, Gardening 4 Gains 💪🌱 As far as organic gardening goes, I talk in-depth about a few fertilizer products from The Anderson's that I'm super pumped about. The first is an organic fertilizer called Innova. It's an OMRI listed fertilizer made from soybean meal - and the plants already feeding on it love it! I also talk about a Humic acid product called Humic DG - really popular for lawn applications, but also huge for organic farmers! 👨‍🌾🚜 I end the podcast talking about some thoughts I have for expanding my brand & product offering, centered around my passions of Gardening & Gains - what would you like us to carry? Is there any health/fitness/organic product you're looking for but can't find? 🤔 Would love to hear your thoughts on the podcast & what you're doing to Garden for Gains! 💪🌱

Organic vs Synthetic, Soil Health, & Emotional Decision-Making
The title is pretty self-explanatory but today I talk about organic vs synthetic fertilizers and how I want to study more to learn the truth about their effects rather than jump on an emotional bandwagon or simply assume something is "bad" because it isn't organic. I tried to keep that rant short but I believe it's important to challenge controversy head-on - or else you'll never know the truth. We also discuss soil health, my plans to attempt to expand the garden (again), and discuss future guests I'll be having on the show. Let me know if you have any gardening questions & I'll be happy to answer them in a future podcast 😁🎙️

Broccoli Patrol & the Summer Game Plan
The garden is growing along strong and now the only thing we need to do is protect it from pests & provide it will water & nutrition 🍼🌱 In this episode I talk about how I'm going to protect my broccoli from bugs, how to keep pest pressures down in your garden, and our game plan for the rest of the summer to ensure we're steady filling those CropBoxes!

Living in the Moment & Weekend Garden Projects
In this episode I talk about the importance of living in the moment and how that will make you the happiest version of yourself while dwelling on the past or worrying about the future will put you in a place of depression or anxiety. On a lighter note, I also discuss the garden renovations that Kyla and I made to the garden over the weekend including: adding a new garden gate, installing a new fence, and overall improving the general aesthetic of the Garden of Gains 💪🌱
June 3, 2019
Upgrading the Garden Gate, Fence, & Aesthetic
In this episode I talked about upgrading the garden gate, fence, and overall aesthetic of the Garden of Gains. Yesterday me and Kyla worked hard to drive in fence posts, then put up the new fence - and we also found a new gate at Menards instead of the hillbilly gate that we've been using that I made out of bamboo and crappy wood 😂😂 Other than our big weekend projects I also discuss the ability to grow year-round, why growing in soil is important for flavor, and talk about the terroir of fruits & veggies 🍷

Tomato Growing Tips & Weekend Plans
Yesterday's podcast was about the basics of gardening and this episode dives in deeper on how to grow the most popular garden veggie (or fruit) - the mighty Tomato 💪🍅 I discuss some important aspects about how tomatoes grow (Determinate or indeterminate), how to stake or support them, tips for pest control, and easy to implement fertilizer tips to keep your plants producing heavy! Let me know if you have any other gardening questions and I'll be happy to help 🤗

Gardening Basics - Soil, Sun, & Getting Started
We're going back to the basics on this episode for beginning gardeners and hitting on the bare essentials of the requirements for Sun, Soil, and other foundational knowledge to help you grow an amazing garden 🌱🤗🌱 If you have any other questions you want answered for your garden, let me know and I'll get it on an upcoming episode!

Tornadoes, Rain & the Importance of Vacation Time
In this episode I talk about the storms that have been slamming Ohio non-stop this year, including a tornado in Dayton a couple nights ago. We have been lucky through it all, and really just benefiting from all the rain that's been feeding the garden 🌱💧 I also talk about the importance of talking vacation time and why we need to disconnect from work and recharge ourselves. I think it's also important to separate from work so we realize it is a part of our lives, but not your complete identity in life. It's important, but there's so much more to life - work hard but live harder!

The Meaning of Life, Following your Passion, & Yard Work
I got a little deep & philosophical in this episode 🧠🛋️ talking about the meaning of life - or how to find meaning in life, no matter what you're doing. A lot of this depends on what your passion is; how to find it. I think this all comes from actions, not learning, not reading - the only way you can know is by trying, failing, and persevering. After the philosophical rant I talk about plans for the garden and natural pest control options such as beneficial insects and organic pesticides 🐌🐛🐞

Burpee Plants and Rants on RoundUp, GMOs & Organics, and Growing Supplies
This episode dives into some facts, feelings, and opinions on controversial topics that are top of mind for so many - RoundUp, genetically modified foods/crops, organic growing methods, and my thoughts on the hysteria surrounding those topics. This isn't all serious & controversial though 😂 just some logical thoughts to get people thinking, and take the emotional component out of decision-making. I also talk about plans for the garden which include planting out some new plant varieties from Burpee 🤗 for those who don't know, I was selected as a 2019 Gardener of the Year by Burpee and will be featured during the month of October. In the meantime, I can't wait to plant the new varieties & taste the Purple peppers and the sweet habaneros in the coming months 🤤

Overcoming Climate Change with Root Pouches
Whether you "believe" in climate change or not, I think we can all agree that we've seen storms increase in strength & duration. It seems like any time it rains, the new normal is for it to dump a couple inches of rain. The weather has essentially become like the world - extremely polarized; all the way left or all the way right.. or is it just our perception because of this political climate (weather pun intended). So aside from that rant 😂 here's my take on why I switched from growing in the ground to gardening in Root Pouches 🌱🦘

Growing Broccoli, Organic Pesticides, & Companion Planting
In yesterday's podcast I bragged about how my broccoli hasn't been attacked by bugs yet, went home and had holes in leaves, so that means it's time to spray! Though I hate spraying pesticides, it's completely necessary if you want to harvest what you planted - plus it's an organic, natural product - not harsh chemicals 🧪 Other than organic pesticides, I talk about other natural ways to control pests such as companion planting & trap crops

Last Frost, Transplanting, and Rainwater
Today's the day - it's our last frost day in Ohio 🥳🥳🥳 Even though we haven't seen a frost or freeze in over a month, it's still best to wait rather than gamble with the life of your precious plants 🎰 Other than talking about the last frost, I also talk about transplanting tomatoes & peppers and about my plans for the hundreds of peppers I'm growing. To wrap things up, I talk about irrigation in the garden and why rainwater is so great for your plants 🌧️🌱🌿 what are you planting in your garden this year? Let me know if you have any questions about growing & I'll throw it in a future podcast!

Growing Tomatoes in CowPots
Growing Tomatoes from seed is always a challenge - which is what makes it fun! Seems like you always start too early or too late. This year I was too early and my tomatoes plants were struggling in the plug trays because they were becoming root-bound. I didn't think they'd survive but Kyla told me to plant them up into a bigger pot so they could stretch their legs. Luckily, I had CowPots on deck and I'm super impressed with how my plants have bounced back and began to thrive 🤗 In this episode I talk about what CowPots are, why they're the best pot you don't know about, and how they saved my tomato seedlings - and ultimately, my garden.

Growing Veggies & a Business Organically
Every plant I grow is grown using organic growing methods - and the same goes for my business. In this episode I talk about updates to the CropBox, my plans for the National Hardware Show, and dive into my plans to grow my business - organically, slow & steady and only as I'm ready! And that begs the question - what other products do you want me to offer other than fresh veggies & herbs? Would love to hear your thoughts 😁

Building Raised Beds & Aesthetics in the Garden
We were super productive this weekend and finally built Kyla's raised bed for growing herbs 🌱🌿 In this episode I walk through how to build raised beds, what we planted in that bed, and plans for future growth. Being sick last week also made me really reflective and realize the gaps I need to fill with my content - not just the podcast, but video and blogging as well. Yet it isn't all about production, it's about sharing your passion with the world - and more importantly, it's about living in the moment and enjoying your passion; enjoying your life 😁🥳

Cold Weather Crops & our New Drip Irrigation Setup
In this episode I talk about what I'm planting early in the season. Part of the early planting is the amazing weather we're having in Ohio, but also because I'm more confident to take a risk because of the experience and knowledge I've built over the years. I also talk about the drip irrigation system that we got setup over the weekend and how it'll be such a game changer - saving water, time, money, and ultimately producing healthier plants. This will also be assisted by the Chapin Hydrofeed fertigation system that will be setup with the drip line. So pumped to get this garden on the gains train 💪🌱

Optimizing Time & How to be Happy
Lately I've been obsessed with Time - how do I make the most of the time I'm given? What can I do to find more time? I think there's a ton of time we can steal back from time suckers like complaining, debating taking action, and doing busy work. I think it's also important to realize that it's not simply about the quantity of time - QUALITY is the ultimate benchmark ⏳🏋️‍♂️⌛

Aesthetics & Creativity in the Garden and the Importance of Being True to You
My garden has mostly been functional but this year I'm focusing on creativity and aesthetics - in the garden & online. In this episode I start talking about creativity, art, and some updates on my seedlings growing vertically in the grow rack I have set up with LED grow lights. Towards the second half I start talking about being real and how thats the most important thing, not followers, likes, or vanity metrics. The beautiful thing about social media is that it allows you to connect with people on a deeper level - it isn't the amount of followers you have, but the quality of the relationships you cultivate and the positive impact you can have by simply being yourself and sharing your truths with the world 🙏

Lost Podcasts, Droppin Knowledge & Motivation
So it looks like my last few podcasts have been cut short due to a bug with Anchor (I'm guessing because it was only when I recorded within the app), but here's a full-length podcast talking about the issue and what I began talking about in the past 2 podcasts. After talking about that and the garden, I start diving into more motivational/psychological thoughts - and thats what I love about the morning podcasts - I'm so amped for the day and want to spread that energy to everyone I can! ⚡

Asking for the Sale
Some people are constantly selling, everything is "buy this" "read this" "do this thing for me" - and on the other end of the spectrum, some people can never ask for the sale. I fall into the "not being able to ask" category, but I think I have been slowly getting better. Thanks to my brother Adam for giving me a reality check and helping me to believe in myself and my business - and hopefully this will help expand my product offering and grow my business exponentially 📈

Growing Media: Soil Health, Amendments, & Beneficial Organisms for Gardening Success
Welcome back to another episode featuring Tori Bruns - fellow Merchandiser at AM Leonard & grower at Mustard Seed Farm Market. In this episode we dig into Soil, Soilless media, soil health, and some of the beneficials we use to manage Plant Health, reduce disease and pest pressures, increase drought tolerance - AND SO MUCH MORE! Soil & soilless media is clearly the foundation for plants' growth, but the importance goes so far beyond fertilizers & NPK - it is essentially a whole other world living beneath our feet that give us the foundation for life as we know it! What kind of soil media are you growing in this year? Have you tried making your own? What are some amendments you would recommend to use in the garden? And if you have questions about ANYTHING we talked about - call into the station (if you listen on Anchor) or drop us a comment & we'll address it in a future podcast!

How Portal will make Facebook Dominant
When I first saw Facebook's Portal I was pretty cynical about it. But my feelings have changed as I have travelled on this vlogging journey from filming to editing, and simply realizing the vast amount of time and effort that is spent on the whole process - that's when I realized that Facebook Portal was the answer to that creative conundrum. In this podcast I rant about how the Portal needs to be modified and marketed, but I go down some really interesting paths about how the Portal is only the beginning of pulling people further into the Facebook platform & ecosystem of companies it owns like WhatsApp, Instagram, Marketplace. I think the current version of the Portal is only the beginning of a huge shift in the way we deal with social media platforms.

National CSA Day - Interview with Tori from Mustard Seed Farm Market
In honor of National CSA Day, I did a podcast with another local grower, Tori Bruns who runs Mustard Seed Farm Market in McCartyville, OH. She's growing on a much larger scale than I am with 2 high tunnels, an acre of sweet corn, and an acre of pumpkins. In this episode we dive into her origin story & how she got started farming, what a CSA is, what we're currently growing, and a ton of other stuff about growing fruits & vegetables and our plans for the year. Today is National CSA Day because it is the last Friday of the month of February. That's usually the time that people are finalizing their CSA customer list so that they can plan what to grow for the coming season. Hope you enjoy the podcast & feel free to drop us a comment with any questions & we'll be happy to answer them. Plant Lab Rennovations, Expansion Plans, and other Rants

For this being our first attempt, I feel like we really got into a groove, went off on tangents in every possible direction with topics ranging from bodybuilding, fitness, nutrition, the "ideal" health, and politics. Battling Insecurities, Opening Up, & Vlog Plans
This was from a video I filmed at the beginning of the year right after I began vlogging. In this podcast I talk about a funny story of taking our dog Basil to the vet, then I go into talking about vlogging. I touch on the challenges & time it takes to adapt and retrain your mind into a different way of thinking. We have been told how bad social media is, but I think that vlogging shows the good that resides in these platforms - and that's exactly what it's all about - Platforms. You have a platform to speak your truths, to tell your life story, and most importantly to me - you have the chance to be the Matriarch or Patriarch of your family tree. When you look back at your family history you may have a few pictures of great-grandparents, but think about the endless amounts of content our great-great-great grandchildren will have from us! If you want to, you can be the start of your digital family tree & hundreds of years from now your ancestors will be tracking you down - you'll be the earliest relative they can find with an overwhelming amount of posts, tweets, videos - whatever you want to create & be remembered by: true Legacy.
