32. Christopher Bill (@classicaltrombone) on Going Viral and Creating Your Own Market
My guest today, trombonist and arranger Christopher Bill, is the most subscribed brass musician on YouTube. His all-trombone content has amassed more than 85 million views and over 500,000 followers. He is an active educator on the trombone festival circuit and publishes sheet music of his arrangements on his website classical trombone.com. I really admire the approach he’s taken with his career and he had a lot of things to say that I think will be extremely helpful to anyone trying to build an audience online. We also talk about what it really means to go viral, how to take advantage of vertical video, and at the end of the episode we’ll listen to two of his arrangements.

28. AI and the End of Physical Sheet Music: Enote CEO Boian Videnoff
Paper may have finally met its match in Boian Videnoff, my guest today, the co-CEO and co-founder of Enote, a music technology startup in Berlin developing powerful AI-technology capable of digitizing sheet music into fully interactive musical scores. It’s an ambitious company with the end goal of ultimately replacing all physical sheet music. There are some insanely cool things that the company is working on and as I told him, I am equal parts excited and terrified to see what will come of it. Who knows where all this goes, but the potential of what might change in the next 5-10 years as the result of AI is really mind blowing and I think you will find this conversation to be extremely eye-opening.
Also check out Episode 11 of the podcast which talks about how text-based AI like ChatGPT can help composers with some of the mundane tasks involved in marketing music.

Share your story on the Selling Sheet Music Podcast!
Three weeks from today is the one year anniversary of the podcast and I want to mark the occasion by doing a special episode featuring you, the listener. I want to hear your success stories in self-publishing (or traditional publishing). Pick a piece that you’ve composed or arranged and tell me about it. However you choose to define success is fine, maybe it’s something that sold a lot of copies, maybe it’s just something you’re really proud of, just make it something that will encourage and help others, especially new composers.
All you have to do is record a voice memo (or if you have a studio set up use that) and submit it to garrett@breezetunes.com along with a recording of the song you’re talking about. I’ll play the audio of both on the June 27th podcast episode.
Start your recording by stating your name and where you’re from and please limit your story to five minutes. As for the recordings of your piece, send us the best quality audio that you can. It doesn’t have to be a live recording, and it doesn’t have to be perfect, but keep in mind that this episode will live on the internet forever.
And for the arrangers listening, unfortunately the recording you submit needs to be in the public domain or something you have personally acquired the rights to so that the episode doesn’t get flagged and taken down due to copyright.
The deadline to submit is June 20th.

We had a fantastic conversation about Tolkien, creative orchestration, marketing compositions through unique titles, the history of wind orchestra music, what to do with success, and a host of other topics. His music is distributed through Hal Leonard, and a new edition of the Symphony Number one will be released next month.
