28. AI and the End of Physical Sheet Music: Enote CEO Boian Videnoff

Paper may have finally met its match in Boian Videnoff, my guest today, the co-CEO and co-founder of Enote, a music technology startup in Berlin developing powerful AI-technology capable of digitizing sheet music into fully interactive musical scores.  It’s an ambitious company with the end goal of ultimately replacing all physical sheet music.  There are some insanely cool things that the company is working on and as I told him, I am equal parts excited and terrified to see what will come of it.  Who knows where all this goes, but the potential of what might change in the next 5-10 years as the result of AI is really mind blowing and I think you will find this conversation to be extremely eye-opening.

Also check out Episode 11 of the podcast which talks about how text-based AI like ChatGPT can help composers with some of the mundane tasks involved in marketing music.

24. Advocacy From the Composer Perspective: Dr. Emily Williams Burch and Alex Gartner

Advocacting for music generally is one thing. Advocating specifically for YOUR music is quite another.

To unpack this topic, I'm joined by Dr. Emily Williams Burch and Alex Gartner, the authors of The Business of Choir and members of the American Choral Directors Association committee for advocacy and collaboration.

In addition to being experienced and well respected choral conductors, Alex is an established composer and Emmy is the host of the Music Ed Matters Podcast. This episode is a big one!

Share your story on the Selling Sheet Music Podcast!

Three weeks from today is the one year anniversary of the podcast and I want to mark the occasion by doing a special episode featuring you, the listener.  I want to hear your success stories in self-publishing (or traditional publishing).  Pick a piece that you’ve composed or arranged and tell me about it.  However you choose to define success is fine, maybe it’s something that sold a lot of copies, maybe it’s just something you’re really proud of, just make it something that will encourage and help others, especially new composers.

All you have to do is record a voice memo (or if you have a studio set up use that) and submit it to garrett@breezetunes.com along with a recording of the song you’re talking about.  I’ll play the audio of both on the June 27th podcast episode.

Start your recording by stating your name and where you’re from and please limit your story to five minutes.  As for the recordings of your piece, send us the best quality audio that you can.  It doesn’t have to be a live recording, and it doesn’t have to be perfect, but keep in mind that this episode will live on the internet forever.

And for the arrangers listening, unfortunately the recording you submit needs to be in the public domain or something you have personally acquired the rights to so that the episode doesn’t get flagged and taken down due to copyright.

The deadline to submit is June 20th.

14. Lord of the Wind Orchestra: Johan de Meij on Hobbits, Trombones, and Self-Publishing

Today I’m speaking with Johan de Meij, a Dutch composer and conductor who has been self-publishing his music ever since the premiere of his symphony number one, based on the Lord of the Rings, which premiered 35 years ago this month and catapulted him to fame within the world of wind orchestra music.  We had a fantastic conversation about Tolkien, creative orchestration, marketing compositions through unique titles, the history of wind orchestra music, what to do with success, and a host of other topics.  His music is distributed through Hal Leonard, and a new edition of the Symphony Number one will be released next month.

6. Setting a High Bar for Music Preparation and Engraving: Interview with Scoring Notes' Philip Rothman

Today I’m talking to Philip Rothman, founder of NYC Music Services, and one of the world’s foremost experts in music preparation and music notation.  He is also co-host of the podcast Scoring Notes, which covers news and developments of all things related to music notation software.  Be sure to check out Notation Central, where Philip offers a treasure trove of free and paid resources for users of Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, or Musescore.

We talk about all the work that needs to happens after a composition is finished to prepare it for publication, the differences between music copying, music preparation, and music engraving, as well as how to get the most out of music notation software.  It’s an eye-opening conversation that sheds light into a corner of the music industry that doesn’t normally get a lot of attention. ---
