69 - The Charge Point Operators episode
This is the redux version of episode 69 - the ChargePoint operators
This episode contains the full and complete interviews with Ian Johnston and Tom Callow.
We’ve talked before on this podcast about the charging infrastructure in the UK (and, indeed, worldwide) The general consensus amongst a lot of EV owners is that unless you have a Tesla and access to the Supercharging network you’re not going to have the best experience with charging.
I think that a number of years ago that was probably true. However the infrastructure is improving every day. However, however, with the number of new EVs being bought and put on the road this infrastructure lead is starting to narrow. More cars mean more chargers are needed in more places with more units and good pricing.
At the end of last season we did a whole episode about the price of charging. In that episode we identified the fact that there are numerous pricing schemes out there and that you can pay different amounts for your electricity depending on the type of charger, the method of payment and the speed of the charger.
Obviously this becomes a problem for people who are used to the ’one price per litre’ model for petrol that predominantly exists in the fossil fuel world.(Yes, the price per litre can vary within a percentage by different providers. But it isn’t anything up to 3 times the difference as it can be with EV charging)
Today we’re in discussion with a couple of the main Charge Point Operators (or CPOs) in the UK to ask them a few questions about their networks, their pricing and their plans for the future.
