Geo Gems Podcast
By Geo Gems: The Podcast
Welcome! My name is Jewell and this is Geo Gems: The Podcast. A small project of mine to attempt to discuss everyday issues from a Geographer's perspective. Disclaimer: I am not a geography expert by any means. I just really love teaching and my educational background is majorly focused on Geography. If you're here that means you love Geography too, and you want to learn and participate in these discussions! Happy to have you as a listener!
Geo Gems Podcast | Episode 3: That Very Strange Four Letter Word
This episode felt highly personal and for a moment I felt really strange about it because I felt that this podcast was supposed to straight to the point and focused on Geography. But halfway through writing the notes for the episode I realised that having a career in Geography requires you to get extremely personal. It is a subject that is so broad, that if you do not apply the textbook theories and scientific data to the parts of your life that are unique to you, your community, country and culture, then it remains just as it is... a subject. Getting personal meant talking about something... and someone that made me decide to do this podcast in the first place and continues to inspire me to do even more things. If this episode doesn't raise some eyebrows I hope it at least raises some questions. -------------------‐----------------------------------------------------- Links: msha.ke/geogems -------------------‐----------------------------------------------------- Music used in this episode: Soaring by Ghostdrifter. Geo Gems Podcast | Episode 2: "We Really Hate Poor People." - D Government & Co.
Couldn't have found a more fitting name for this one. In this episode the discussion continues with population changes. What makes populations grow? How much is too much when it comes to population size? And of course how we have all failed the most vulnerable people in our society. Migration shouldn’t be the threatening issue that it is and it is extremely easy for crises to happen when your economy isn’t diversified making you want to flee your country as well. This episode touches on the necessary adjustments that must be made if we want to avoid the actual catastrophes that occur as populations continue to grow. And surprisingly it has less to do with food and everything to do with morals. Don’t forget to share! Songs used: Soaring by Ghostrifter Official https://soundcloud.com/ghostrifter-of... Geo Gems Podcast | Episode 1: Orange Peels, Cookies, and Why Size Matters to Colonizers
In this episode I discuss the evolution of Geography as a study, with a timeline of where it all started and what it is now. I also talk about cartography, which is the science of mapping, and what lessons we've learnt (and are yet to learn) by comparing the earth to food, and allowing rich people to own boats. We'll also get into some issues surrounding colonialism and imperialism that are more significant than you might have thought. The next time you get in a flags war on Twitter, it probably won't be as fun (sorry 😂) but you'll be a tad bit more enlightened (not sorry). Correction: I made an error with my size comparison. When I said a bottle cap to a piece of paper. *facepalm* Instead, I meant to say a quarter (25 cent) compared to an iPhone 7. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Soaring by Ghostrifter Official https://soundcloud.com/ghostrifter-of...
