Revisiting the Impact of NVIDIA GTC | The Gestalt IT Rundown: March 27, 2024

NVIDIA GTC event was the big story last week, both on the Rundown and in the tech industry generally. NVIDIA is clearly the company to beat in AI and HPC and this has the entire industry on its toes. Every company in tech is emphasizing their partnership and joint offerings with NVIDIA. But there's a reaction from their competitors, too, with Google, Qualcomm, and Intel announcing their intent to undermine NVIDIA's dominance.

NVIDIA GTC News and NVIDIA Blackwell Systems | The Gestalt IT Rundown: March 20, 2024

NVIDIA GTC News and NVIDIA Blackwell Systems | The Gestalt IT Rundown: March 20, 2024

This week is NVIDIA GTC, or as Futurum Group CEO Daniel Newman called it "the Woodstock of AI". There's been a lot of discussion about the ascendant NVIDIA and how they plan on capitalizing on a hot market.

NVIDIA unveiled Blackwell, their newest architecture. The chip was named after American mathematician David Blackwell and math is most definitely the strong suit of this product line. It has 208 billion transistors to power a second-generation transformer engine for accelerating inferencing. There is also support for fifth-generation NVLink and NVLink Switch connectivity for GPU clusters with speeds of up to 1.8 terabytes per second of bidirectional throughput, which means Blackwell could process the entire bandwidth of the Internet in just 11 units. Blackwell is being integrated into The GB100 and GB200 superchip systems which focus on Tensor core performance and can be combined into new clusters of water-cooled units of up to 72 Blackwell GPUs.

Broadcom Redefines VMware | The Gestalt IT Rundown: February 28, 2024

Broadcom Redefines VMware | The Gestalt IT Rundown: February 28, 2024

In a series of bold moves, Broadcom has restructured VMware shifting to subscription-only licenses across all offerings. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan wants VMware to focus on resiliency, developer efficiency, and infrastructure efficiency. Tan outlines three key strategies: radical simplification, substantial R&D investment for on-premises to private cloud solutions, and enhancing the ecosystem. The discontinuation of products, including Aria SaaS and Carbon Black, and divesture of EUC is part of a plan to streamline VMware's portfolio into bundled suites. Reactions are decidedly mixed, but we are starting to see the strategy come together.

Should We Be Concerned About Growing Electricity Demand? | The Gestalt IT Rundown: January 24, 2024

According to a recent report from the IEA, data center electricity demands are set to rise over the next three years. The report discusses the CO2 emissions and the potential mitigation that companies have committed to doing to achieve carbon neutrality. Also of note was the assertion that clean energy sources could meet this growing demand to help offset the need to rely on older power systems that are harder to optimize for efficiency.

VMware Simplifies Offer Lineup through Broadcom | The Gestalt IT Rundown: December 13. 2023

Change is in the air and it's licensed. The biggest news this week came from VMware (by Broadcom) as they announced a simplification of their licensing model. The first change is that VMware Cloud Foundation has had the subscription cost cut in half and additional support levels added to help with activation and lifecycle management. VMware vSphere Foundation is also available as a subscription offering with several add-ons avaialble. Notably missing is the option for perpetual licensing, which was removed in this simplification. Also removed were hybrid purchase programs and anything not subscription-based. Customers may still use their perpetual licenses but will not be able to buy support for them until they transition to the new subscription model. IBM and Meta's AI Alliance Launched This Week | The Gestalt IT Rundown: December 6, 2023

IBM and Meta's AI Alliance Launched This Week | The Gestalt IT Rundown: December 6, 2023

IBM and Facebook parent company Meta have decided to advocate for a more open approach to AI. They've announced a joint AI Alliance group. The companies are part of a growing trend that sees advocates arguing that AI shouldn't be proprietary and closed. Also signing on to the alliance are Dell, Sony, AMD, Intel, and several other AI startups. The group seems to stand in opposition to companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft who are focused on creating AI rules that favor outcomes that will put them on top, as well as top dog NVIDIA.

Announcements from AWS re:Invent | The Gestalt IT Rundown: November 29, 2023

Announcements from AWS re:Invent | The Gestalt IT Rundown: November 29, 2023

Amazon announced that they will be using Nvidia's NVSwitch to create new rackscale AI platforms. This allows customers to use Nvidia technology like Grace Hopper or build something using AWS Nitro DPUs and Elastic Fabric Adapaters. That last combination doesn't use InfiniBand and moves to Ethernet. Two new chips are coming out from the Amazon labs. The first is Graviton4, the latest generation of Arm processor. Graviton4 has 50% more cores and 75% more memory bandwidth. This version of Graviton is based on the Demeter Neoverse V2 core. On the AI front Amazon also announced the next revision of their AI acceleration chip, Trainium2. This update has a 4x performance increase from the first generation and allows for liquid cooling. Trainium2 is designed to be deployed in clusters of 16 chips. In the data space, AWS made news with the GA of Bedrock, which enables customers to run foundational ML models from companies like Anthropic, Meta, and of course AWS itself. But many companies are worried about hallucination and want to include their own data in these models. That's what AWS is delivering with Guardrails, and what AWS partners are leaning into as well. This and more on this week's Gestalt IT Rundown.

OpenAI Chaos Reigns Supreme | Gestalt IT Rundown: November 22, 2023

It's been a wild week for OpenAI. On Friday, the board notified CEO Sam Altman that he was being removed. Then President and Chairman Greg Brockman quit. OpenAI then went through three interim CEOs in a weekend. Meanwhile, Altman and Brockman were hired by Microsoft but rumors swirled they would be reinstated at OpenAI, which eventually happened late Tuesday night. The condition for the reinstatement was the removal and reappointment of all but one board member. That's one hell of a weekend! This and more on this week’s Rundown. Head to GestaltIT.com for show notes.

Executive Order for Federal AI Standards Signed | Gestalt IT Rundown: November 1, 2023

President Joe Biden has signed a comprehensive executive order addressing the safety and governance of artificial intelligence in the United States. The order, running to nearly 20,000 words, signifies a significant shift towards enhanced AI governance, covering areas such as transparency, safety data sharing, federal standards, and tests, and ethical considerations across various sectors. It requires tech companies developing large AI models to share safety data with the U.S. government before releasing them to the public, addressing transparency concerns advocated by AI experts. This comes just before the US, China, European Union, and major tech companies and organizations attend an international summit on AI risks at Bletchley Park organized by the UK government. Are we finally going to do something about AI?

US-China Tech War now Focused on RISC-V chip Technology | Gestalt IT Rundown: October 11, 2023

In the ongoing geopolitical battle between the United States and China, a new front has emerged, focusing on the open-source chip technology known as RISC-V. American lawmakers, citing national security concerns, are pressuring the Biden administration to place restrictions on U.S. companies' involvement in RISC-V, which is widely utilized in China. This technology competes with proprietary chip architectures from Arm and Intel and has applications ranging from smartphone chips to advanced artificial intelligence processors. The lawmakers fear that China is exploiting the culture of open collaboration among American companies to bolster its own semiconductor industry, potentially undermining the U.S.'s leadership in the chip field and supporting China's military modernization. We've spoken a lot about RISC-V and the US/China situation, so it's no surprise that these are coming together. How should we look at this situation?

In an excellent article, Karim Khan of the International Criminal Court has started to make the case that cybercriminals should be subject to international law for their escapades. The current state of the world often sees these criminals go unpunished due to nation state backing or lack of jurisdiction. Khan says that we need to get tougher by ensuring these naer-do-wells can face justice for their crimes, especially when they impact so many people around the world.

Business Source License Adopted by HashiCorp | Gestalt IT Rundown: August 16, 2023

Do you love licensing drama? Last week HashiCorp made headlines with an announcement by CTO Armon Dadgar that they're changing licensing models. HashiCorp is now adopting the Business Source License, or BSL, which was popularized by MariaDB and Couchbase. Under the BSL, HashiCorp code will remain freely available and usable for non-production use. You may be granted a license for production use if your project doesn't compete with HashiCorp. If it does you'll need to buy a commercial license. The move has generated a lot of discussion and speculation in the community given how prevalent projects like Terraform are. The Battle Over Red Hat Enterprise Linux | Gestalt IT Rundown: July 12, 2023

The Linux world is abuzz with controversy as IBM Red Hat puts the source code for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) behind a paywall, leaving CentOS Stream as the only accessible option. Meanwhile, Oracle emphasizes its commitment to Linux freedom, offering open access to binaries and source code for their RHEL-compatible distribution, Oracle Linux. On the other hand, SUSE takes a bold step by forking RHEL and investing millions in developing their own RHEL-compatible distribution, free from restrictions. The battle for Linux supremacy is heating up, with each company vying for dominance and championing their respective visions of openness and innovation. MLPerf 3 Upsets the AI Apple Cart | Gestalt IT Rundown: June 28, 2023

Training 3.0 benchmark results show performance gains of up to 1.54x compared to six months ago and 33-49x improvement over the first round, driving innovation and energy efficiency in the industry. Intel's Habana Gaudi2 ML training engine competes with Nvidia's offerings, boasting better performance than A100 and lower pricing than H100. Nvidia, on the other hand, unveils their NeMo model with half a trillion parameters and expands the MLPerf Training suite to include GPT-3 and a new Recommendation engine. Their collaboration with CoreWeave showcases the superior performance of the H100, providing a 3.6x speed increase for GPT-3 compared to Intel Xeon and Gaudi2. Nvidia is also developing foundation models for their DGX cloud, collaborating with major players in the industry, and Intel is widely rumored to be developing its own Gaudi2-as-a-Service offering. Dell Tech World Looks to Appeal to All | Gestalt IT Rundown: May 31, 2023

Dell Tech World was the talk of the industry last week. In part it's because Dell is rolling out initiatvies to try and address their key areas as those technologies move closer to the cloud. Dell APEX storage for public cloud was a key piece. APEX is a software defined storage platform for AWS and Azure that integrates with existing tools to create a hybrid multicloud experience. Also of note was Dell NativeEdge, a software platform that can help manage deployment of applications and devices at the edge of the enterprise. Also announced along with NativeEdge is Project Fort Zero, Dell's implementation of zero trust network architecture (ZTNA). The last big announcement was a partnership with Nvidia to provide the Project Helix platform to run Nvida generative AI. Helix sees Nvidia H100 GPUs running in PowerEdge servers. Ransomware Rampage: Cyber Threats and Costly Consequences | Gestalt IT Rundown: May 24, 2023

Ransomware Rampage: Cyber Threats and Costly Consequences | Gestalt IT Rundown: May 24, 2023

Ransomware attacks continue to pose a significant threat across various sectors, with recent incidents targeting critical industries and causing substantial financial and operational damages. Federal authorities have issued warnings about a surge in cyberattacks exploiting a high-severity vulnerability in Veeam software that enables unauthorized access and raises the risk of data heft and ransomware deployment. With healthcare organizations heavily reliant on Veeam software for data protection, the implications of these attacks are particularly concerning. But the impact of ransomware attacks extends beyond healthcare, as demonstrated by recent incidents faced by companies like Dole, which incurred $10.5 million in direct costs following a ransomware attack, and the ongoing attack on the Dallas Municipal Court Building, disrupting legal proceedings and potentially exposing sensitive personal and case-related information. Since we have an expert in data protection joining us today, let's take a closer look at the face of ransomware. This and more on the Rundown.

The Legacy of the Biggest Supply Chain Hack | Gestalt IT Rundown: May 3, 2023

The Legacy of the Biggest Supply Chain Hack | Gestalt IT Rundown: May 3, 2023

Thanks to Gina Rosenthal for sharing a wonderful article from Wired about the details behind the SolarWinds Orion supply chain hack that we covered back at the end of 2020. You may recall that SolarWinds was compromised by Russian hackers and their software was infected and used to breach the US government as well as Microsoft, Mandiant, and more. In this article we're learning even more interesting information, such as the source of the attacks from the Russian SVR which is their version of the CIA, to the fact that the US DOJ detected signs of the attack just a couple of months after the infiltration and didn't pick up on the possiblity of it being a larger issue. The whole article is a fascinating read but what strikes me is that we're now 2.5 years past this earth shattering situation and we still don't know for certain if we could be impacted by it again. Chris, have we learned any lessons from this? Google Cloud Turns a Profit and Extends the Life of Servers | Gestalt IT Rundown: April 26, 2023

In the three years since reporting financial metrics Google's cloud business has announced they have turned a profit. Their offerings under this umbrella include Google Cloud Platform and Google Workspace. These two products now account for 10 percent of parent company Alphabet's total revenue. Buried in an SEC filing is news that Google will extend the estimated useful life of its servers and networking equipment to 6 years. While this is phrased as financial engineering, it also reflects a change in how Google, and other hyperscalers, will purchase and buy servers. What are the ramifications of this change? Does this mean the cloud business will remain a priority for Google going forward?

Intel's Transformation Continues | Gestalt IT Rundown: April 19, 2023

Intel's Transformation Continues | Gestalt IT Rundown: April 19, 2023

Intel made a couple of big moves this week. The first was the surprise news that they are exiting the server market. No, they aren't giving up on Xeons and they are going to get Sapphire Rapids out the door. Instead, they are selling off their server integration business. The recipient of this windfall is MiTAC, an edge-to-cloud solutions provider and ODM partner of DSG. Intel is giving MiTAC the rights to manufacture existing designs. In addition, they announced the end of their Blockscale ASIC line which was used primarily by Bitcoin miners. Intel said that they are continuing to focus on IDM 2.0 operations. Stephen, we've talked a lot about Intel but the transformation seems to be accelerating!
