Get Up Nation® Podcast Episode 82 Guest: Lisa McCormick, Anti-Human Trafficking Speaker, Educator & Advocate
Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick. I’m the Creator and Host of Get Up Nation® and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Lisa McCormick. Lisa lost her son Jeffrey when he was 17 years old to a drug overdose. Lisa later learned Jeffrey had been sex trafficked prior to his death. Lisa speaks and advocates for systemic change that enables American systems to hold traffickers and buyers accountable, prevent human trafficking, and effectively rescue and serve those who have been trafficked. Because of the sensitive nature of the interview, I chose not to end the show with my usual six questions. Instead we focus heavily on the resilience process Lisa uses of transforming her pain and grief into advocacy, awareness, and a relentless drive to educate others in hopes of preventing future exploitation. Lisa is a member of the Wisconsin Anti Human Trafficking Advisory Council and is featured in the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families documentary film on youth sex trafficking in Wisconsin to be released in 2019. Lisa speaks on the topics of sex trafficking, drug addiction, bullying, acceptance, and her faith throughout her personal journey as a parent of a sex trafficking victim. She educates groups to recognize the signs of at risk youth, how to overcome barriers of fear in talking with them and showing them you care, and to give them someone to trust. Lisa has made it her life’s purpose to share her family’s story so others understand trafficking and how easily our vulnerable children can be exploited. Lisa walks alongside suffering parents, grandparents, and caregivers, supporting them with the knowledge that they are not alone in this journey. In this episode of the Get Up Nation® Show, we are confronted with the truth that human trafficking exists only because there is a demand for it. If there was no demand, it would not exist. And now, I present to you, Lisa McCormick.

Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Madeleine Black, an international speaker, psychotherapist, and the author of the new book called Unbroken: One Woman’s Journey to Rebuild a Life Shattered by Violence. Madeleine grew up in London in the late 1970’s and was brutally sexually assaulted at the age of 13 by two American teenagers. She lived in a state of shock and self-loathing as a result of the assault, and it took years of struggle to confront her painful memories and begin to undo the damage. In 2014, after coming to terms with how the trauma had shaped her life, she shared her story publicly for the first time. In her new book Unbroken, Madeleine shares her journey of profound trauma, and her discovery that our lives are not defined by what knocks us down but are defined by how we get back up. I am honored Madeleine has taken time to share her journey of profound courage with Get Up Nation®! Buy Madeleine's Book: https://amzn.to/2BSsxkh www.getupnation.com www.idealstateconsulting.com

Dr. Baugher’s mission is to “support those who suffer and those who care with teachings on the practice of compassionate caregiving. His vision is to create “a world where compassion for all is the foundation of human culture and social systems.” I feel very honored to be speaking with John today and to learn his insights and perspective on how we as individuals, organizations, and societies can develop and sustain resilience as we are confronted with the reality of death and seek to ease suffering during our experience of life. Get Up Nation® Podcast Episode 74 Guest: Brandon Winfield, https://www.iaccess.life/
Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Brandon Winfield, the Founder and CEO of iaccess.life. I’m so impressed with Brandon who suffered an injury during a motocross accident at the age of 14 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. A powerful example of resilience, Brandon saw this injury as a mere setback. He committed himself to finding the opportunity within the tragedy and noticed that while he traveled, most places he visited were up to Americans with Disabilities Act code, but there were many areas grandfathered in and never forced to retrofit to accommodate the mobility impaired. Brandon recognized the opportunity of creating an app that would allow people with mobility impairments to rate and review the ease of accessibility and post photos of venues like restaurants, clubs, and bars. Creating this community of people with similar experiences would be something that could help others prepare for types of inconveniences others may face if visiting. This information creates the ability for mobility impaired people to navigate a stress free, relaxing night with friends and loved ones. Not only that but it helps others be more aware of the challenges mobility impaired people face and plan events and celebrations in places that are accommodating for all. Brandon, thank you for joining me on Get Up Nation®! Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 65 Guest: Shane Therault, Founder of www.helpingheroespcs.com
Get Up Nation! My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Shane Therault, a Marine Corps Veteran, who served in the elite Presidential Guard. He served 5 years before injury forced him out of the service. He transitioned into real estate and created the company called Helping Heroes PCS. What I love about Shane is his laser focus on the realities associated with the real estate world. He tells it like it is. When you access Shane and his company Helping Heroes PCS, you’re accessing someone with an established and proven work ethic, real estate expertise that goes above and beyond, someone who values your trust as a client and understands military life…it’s stressors…it’s commitments…and it’s challenges before, during, and after. Shane is someone who takes your needs and challenges seriously, and then delivers…driving home value…literally. Now before you think what I’ve just said is a set up for an entrepreneurial sales pitch, take the time to listen to Shane in this interview. You will quickly understand why the most successful men and women in business don’t focus on short term financial transactions that pad their pockets for a day or two or wave a banner about veterans 2 times a year on Veterans Day and Memorial Day. You will quickly understand that Shane recognizes the depth of commitment that is required to serve and protect this country and how he reveres the opportunity to serve you and your family as you do one of the most stressful and anxiety causing things families can do…move from one residence to another. Get Up Nation® Podcast Episode 62 Guest: John Mahshie, www.veteranshealingfarm.org
What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player, Adam Greenberg. Welcome to Episode 62! Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with John Mahshie. John is the Founder and Executive Director of www.veteranshealingfarm.org. After he left the Air Force, he felt a profound sense of isolation and wanted to do something about it. He and his wife Nicole created a 501(c)3 non-profit community called Veterans Healing Farm for fellow veterans desiring a sense of belonging and purpose along with their families and allies. Since its inception, Veterans Healing Farm has donated over 25,000 pounds of flowers and fresh produce. They’ve created a thriving community of local veterans, caregivers, and civilians who foster emotional, physical, and spiritual health. As we know, one vital component of health is resilience. In May of 2018, Veterans Healing Farm experienced tremendous adversity in the form of not just 1, but 2 unprecedented, catastrophic flash floods. In a powerful demonstration of resilience, they bounced back in honor of fallen Army soldier Corporal Matthew Bolar who gave his life in Iraq on May 3, 2007. John, thank you for your service that continues today, and for taking the time to share your example of resilience on the Get Up Nation® Podcast. What up, Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Rene Michele, the author of “Battle Scars Are Beautiful: From Victim to Victory.” She is a survivor of sexual abuse that began in childhood and is committed to teaching others how to both identify and prevent childhood abuse. As a speaker she shares with individuals, organizations, and communities how “lack of self-worth, dysfunctional family systems, and maladaptive thinking all contribute to children not being able to identify or protect themselves from dangerous situations.” Rene is the first in her family to attend university and after achieving her degree, went on to earn qualifications in Counseling, Management, and Advanced Resume Writing where she helps others recognize their greatness and communicate it effectively to advance her clients into their greatness. She is the successful owner and Director of Career Path Resumes and the Director of a Crisis Care Community outreach organization. Today she continues to work in the child safety and disability sectors. It is my honor to welcome Rene to the Get Up Nation® Podcast, as she is a profound example of what Get Up Nation® is! She refused to allow experiences of domestic violence, bankruptcy, abusive marriage, repeated sexual assaults, and episodes of mental illness define her life. I can’t wait to share with you Rene’s fierce and resilient voice that will help you find the inner tenacity you may have never known you had. What Up, Get Up Nation®? My name is Ben Biddick, the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with WNBA star Renee Montgomery. She currently plays starting Point Guard for the Atlanta Dream, is a 2-time WNBA Champion, was the WNBA’s Sixth Woman of the Year in 2012, was a member of the WNBA All-Rookie Team in 2009, and an Eastern Conference All-Star in 2011. A graduate of the University of Connecticut, she honed her craft under the guidance of legendary Coach Auriemma. Renee led Connecticut to 138 wins and only 11 losses in her 4 year career at UCONN. She helped take UCONN to the NCAA Women’s Final Four twice, to four NCAA regionals, and 4 Big East regular season titles. She started 147 times, 139 of those were consecutive, the most by any player in UCONN program history as well as the most nationally. When she left Connecticut and launched her WNBA career, she was the only player in program history to rank in the top 10 in points, assists, steals, and three pointers. During her Senior year at UCONN, she led the team to a 39 and 0 record--one of only 5 perfect seasons in NCAA history--winning the National Championship. She was selected by the Minnesota Lynx in the first round and was the fourth overall pick in the 2009 WNBA draft. She’s won numerous awards including 2009’s Nancy Lieberman Award and 2009’s Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award in addition to her achievements on college and professional courts. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 58 Guest: Ultra Runner And Veteran Jordan Theurer
What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Jordan Theurer. I had the honor of being connected with Jordan by Marc Holley who owns Atlas Defense. Marc is an amazing person who stepped up when I wanted to help Renee Parks and her husband celebrate completing chemotherapy. Check out Renee’s amazing journey on Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 3 and check out Marc Holley’s Atlas Defense at the link below where he coaches his clients in personal security to develop confidence through competence. He served in the Marine Corps and lives to impact veteran mental health. Which brings me to Jordan. Jordan is the first Get Up Grant Winner of 2019. Get Up Nation provided him with $50 to get some gear he needed for a race he only had 4 days to prepare for. When we get into this episode you will understand why I believe Jordan is deserving of our support. He is doing amazing things and overcoming tremendous adversity. He is an Ultra Runner who just completed the St Croix Winter Ultra 40 mile race in Hinckley, Minnesota, on January 12, 2019. He pulled a sled in the middle of the woods at night for 40 miles on 4 days notice! Initially he thought he earned twentieth place but found out afterward he placed fourteenth by finishing the race in 11 hours, 27 minutes, and 14 seconds! Jordan is a United States Army Veteran and a survivor of alcoholism. In the darkest times of his addiction he discovered the book Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen by Christopher McDougall. It was the spark Jordan needed to begin his journey toward sobriety and health. Some ridiculed him when he first articulated he was going to be an Ultra Runner in the throes of addiction, but here he is now making his dream a reality. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 53 Guest: Tiffany Annette Young, Cancer and Domestic Violence Survivor
What Up, Get Up Nation®? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently on Get Up Nation ® social media, I had the honor of meeting a person who has experienced tremendous adversity in her life named Tiffany Annette Young. She is a pediatric cancer survivor and domestic violence survivor. Tiffany also survived cancer as an adult. Due to the effects of retinoblastoma cancer and its treatment at a young age while her family served in the United States Armed Forces in Germany, she was frequently viewed as different. After listening to how Tiffany endured and persevered through ridicule, bullying, illness, post-traumatic stress, and moments where she considered taking her own life, I am honored she joined me on the podcast to share her journey. She shares how she has committed herself to using her experiences of adversity to empower others. She shares how she takes great satisfaction and a depth of gratitude from moments where the gift of her life has been able to influence the lives of others toward their fulfillment. She is a master of creating big impact though “little” acts because of how she sees. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 51 Guest: Stevie Allis, www.wheresteviewrites.com
What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with an amazing person named Stevie Allis. She joined me on the podcast to share her experience of loss and personal rebirth. She lost her husband at the age of 29 when he died unexpectedly, creating a grief she could not foresee or expect. She is a warrior, and like all warriors, understands the risk and danger of vulnerability. Knowing how cruel the world can be, she made herself vulnerable anyway, believing that by sharing her experience in a real way, she might give strength and endurance to someone else who may need it during one of their darkest hours. In reflection of the year we’ve lived in 2018 and as we turn our eyes toward the opportunity and light of a new year, I present to you, Get Up Nation, my conversation with Stevie Allis. What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the privilege of speaking with James “Murr” Murray from TruTV’s “Impractical Jokers” where Murr, and his lifelong friends Joe, Q, and Sal compete to embarrass each other with a series of dares in public. If they refuse the dare, they pay the consequence that their friends dream up, knowing each others’ deepest fears and discomforts. After enduring some of the most horrendous punishments his friends can think of, embarrassing himself intentionally for the enjoyment of his friends and fans, I’m honored to have the opportunity to learn some of his insights into the power laughter can have in developing resilience, especially during the holidays. He’s also the author of the new book called Awakened, currently available from Harper Collins! Murr, thank you for joining me on the Get Up Nation Podcast! Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 49 Guest: Troy Staton, Barber, Founder of Luvs Art Project
What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Troy Staton, the owner of New Beginnings Barbershop in Baltimore, Maryland. Troy has been a barber for 30 years in Baltimore, ten of them at New Beginnings in Hollins Market in Southwest Baltimore. Troy says about New Beginnings, “My shop is more than a barbershop. It’s where I share my passion for art with the community, it’s where my son Rashad brings young men together to talk about their dreams and challenges in ShopTalk meetings, and it’s where I join with businesses to bring health screenings and services to the community.” Troy says, “Being a barber is how I make my living, but the community inside and outside the barbershop is my life.” Troy almost lost his life this year on Halloween. Troy has described how “a frustrated, misguided young man" came into the barbershop shooting. “He wasn’t aiming for me, but I was shot along with another client,” Troy said. Troy survived that night, and not only that, he has persevered to be a powerful, resilient voice and example in his community. He is striving with renewed passion to end the violence in our communities. He said, “A bullet is not going to stop me. I’m ready to elevate even further, to keep pushing for our community, especially for young men like the man who shot me, whose life circumstances lead them to feel they have no option other than violence. I want to reach them and show them that there’s another way.” I am absolutely honored that Troy has taken time to speak with me on the Get Up Nation Podcast! What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I spoke with renowned resilience expert Linda Graham. Linda became a licensed marriage and family therapist in 1995, specializing in helping people “reverse the impact of stress and trauma, manage anxiety, depression, loneliness, and shame and shift out of reactivity, contraction, and smallifying into openness, trust, and conscious, compassionate connection.” She has spent her life and career “guiding people on reliable paths of personal growth and self-transformation.” Her first book was called “Bouncing Back: Rewiring Your Brain for Maximum Resilience and Well-Being.” It integrated modern neuroscience and Western relational psychology with Eastern contemplative practices to help readers “shift out of old patterns of response to life events to more flexible, adaptive coping strategies that lead to more authentic resilience and well-being.” Since the release of her first book, Linda has trained thousands of clinicians and clients in clinical training and personal growth workshops through online courses and in meditation centers in the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. Linda’s second book, which we discuss on this episode of the Get Up Nation Podcast, is called “Resilience.” It leads readers through an “evidence-based trajectory of tools” that span “somatic, emotional, relational, and reflective intelligences to face and cope with any adversity, recover personal strengths and resilience, and move into a compassionate and courageous new life.” It is my honor to welcome Linda Graham to the Get Up Nation Podcast! www.lindagraham-mft.net www.getupnationpodcast.com Music: "Awaken" by Ethan Rank, “Drifting Deeper” by Roland Bingaman You Tube: https://youtu.be/p6iYGwanWlA Facebook: @getupnationpodcast itunes: apple.co/2xZPeih Instagram: @getupnationpodcast Twitter: @getupnationpod Soundcloud: https://bit.ly/2U6s3PB iHeart Radio: ihr.fm/2Jr08DU Ivoox: bit.ly/2EPnV34 Spotify: spoti.fi/2wOjBKD Stitcher: bit.ly/2yzoklu Overcast: bit.ly/2L4pg8B Castbox: bit.ly/2LndDt0 Spreaker: bit.ly/2l4pmR3 Listen Notes: bit.ly/2Rc3les Podchaser: bit.ly/2Pgoirg Acast: bit.ly/2z1P6AM Buy Resilience: https://lindagraham-mft.net/resilience/ Buy Get Up at: amzn.to/2rt2lWN

What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with the amazing Kelsey Delane. On her website www.kelseydelaneyoga.com, she describes aching for years to be “relieved of the burden of her Self” as she experienced severe anxiety and depression as an adolescent. She tried therapy and medication but didn’t find a satisfying solution until she discovered yoga at the age of 17. As she began to practice yoga, she began to “attempt things she previously believed she was incapable of doing.” She “stood in awe” of her strength as she “held a challenging posture and celebrated her ability to use her breath to endure discomfort.” Her perceptions changed about herself and the world, and a door opened into endless possibilities. Her practice has been her “anchor through teenage pregnancy, divorce, mental illness, and every day life.” Today she uses all she has learned and experienced to “walk alongside other women as they refine the tools of their practice, to encourage them along the way, and challenge them toward growth.” In short, after becoming the hero of her own life, she now helps others become the hero of theirs. It’s an honor to welcome Kelsey to the Get Up Nation Podcast. www.kelseydelaneyoga.com www.getupnationpodcast.com Thank you Christine Moghadam of www.corcyoga.com for introducing me to Kelsey so I could share her journey on the Get Up Nation Podcast! Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 44 Guests: Alison Crowley & Cyndi Tomlinson www.bolsterandbridge.org
What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Alison Crowley and Cyndi Tomlinson who have joined forces to create a non-profit organization that supports and empowers people through their cancer experience called Bolster & Bridge: The Foundation. Alison is a yoga therapist specializing in cancer since 2007. She was inspired to become a yoga therapist after witnessing her mother’s experience dealing with multiple chronic illnesses. She and her sisters spent more than 25 years navigating the medical world on behalf of their mother. During these experiences, Alison recognized a need to serve the whole person through challenging medical circumstances. Cyndi is a business executive and cancer survivor. Cyndi experienced her first bout with cancer at the age of 22. She faced a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma while a single mother with a 2 year old daughter. Cyndi underwent treatment while working to support her daughter with the love and help of her family. Twenty years later, Cyndi was diagnosed with breast cancer. This time, she knew she needed additional support to care for herself and her family as she worked full time and raised her second daughter, age 13 at the time. After attending a six-week program with Alison at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, Cyndi responded to the mind-body work with such enthusiasm that she couldn’t wait to come home after each class to share the practices with her daughters. I am honored to release this Get Up Nation Podcast episode during Breast Cancer Awareness month and am honored to share the journey of these amazing women who are doing so much to serve others who face adversity in their lives. They are committed to transforming their experiences of adversity, resilience, and perseverance into gifts for others who need that support, encouragement, and empowerment. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 36 Guest: Marsha Elle, www.marshaellemusic.com
What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Marsha Elle. Marsha is a gifted singer-songwriter, speaker, mentor, and model. She was born with a rare birth defect called proximal femoral focal deficiency resulting in the amputation of Marsha’s lower leg. Born in Haiti, she traveled to the United States to receive medical care and received her first prosthesis when she was 5 years old. In response to stares and bullying, she often disguised the prosthesis and didn’t wear shorts until she was 23 years old. Adjustments in her prosthetic during childhood made mobility difficult at times, leading to falls in the school cafeteria. Music became her “release and comfort.” She also attended a summer camp at the age of 16 for teenage amputees. This experience transformed the way she saw her ability and potential. She began to share her music and her journey with others. She defied the idea that there was no room for her in a body-image focused world, removed from her mind defeating perceptions and limits, and now serves as a beacon of light and faith for those who have difficulty with self-acceptance. I can’t wait to explore and share how Marsha transitioned from adversity to what she describes as a “series of triumphs on top of triumphs over time.” From People Magazine to Essence Magazine to the Huffington Post to Jada Pinkett Smith, people are heralding Marsha as an inspiring example of the beauty that happens when we believe in ourselves and refuse to be limited. It was an honor to have Marsha as a guest on the Get Up Nation Podcast! She even shares something during this episode that no one knows about her legendary photo shoot! Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 34 Guests: Alejandro Villanueva and Richard "Buzz" Bryan
What Up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Richard “Buzz” Bryan and Alejandro Villanueva. Buzz served in the United States Navy as a corpsman and deployed to Iraq with United States Marines. During his service in combat he earned a Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat V, Combat Action Ribbon with a Star, Fleet Marine Force Device, and more. His commitment and intensity to serve his country and the Marines he patrolled with was unparalleled. When I spoke with some of the Marines Buzz served with, they did not hesitate to share stories about his maturity, leadership, and dedication that contributed to preserving and saving the lives of Marines in combat during the Global War on Terror. After completing his military service, Buzz continued to serve those who went into harm’s way. The intensity of his commitment to serve veterans led him into a variety of dangerous and interesting circumstances to help ensure that veterans were receiving sufficient and satisfying support. His duties as an outreach coordinator for the VA connected him with a person named Alejandro Villanueva. Alejandro is a veteran himself. He is a graduate of West Point and completed Infantry, Airborne, and Ranger Schools. He served with the 10th Mountain Division and the First Ranger Battalion. He completed 3 tours of duty in Afghanistan. His actions during combat operations earned him a variety of awards and commendations including a Bronze Star with “V” Device. If you are listening to this and you don’t know the significance of the V attached to this medal, it means Alejandro earned this award by demonstrating heroism or valor in combat. More specifically, Alejandro, who stands 6 feet 9 inches tall rescued wounded soldiers while under enemy fire. And by the way, Alejandro is also the starting left tackle of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 28 Guest: Ben Baker, www.yourbrandmarketing.com
What up, Get Up Nation? Recently, I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Ben Baker from Richmond British Columbia in Canada. Ben’s company Your Brand Marketing assists clients with creating a resilient Living brand in order to engage the client audience and get the client noticed. Some of the ways www.yourbrandmarketing.com serves clients is personal brand development, helping clients understand their brand so they can communicate it more effectively internally and externally, auditing brands and communication so that all assets are saying the same thing in the same way in order to communicate value effectively, and assessing corporate brands to provide an understanding if a brand shift is needed. If your company does 5 to 40 million dollars in the business to business arena but can’t justify the costs of a full time Chief Marketing Officer, www.yourbrandmarketing.com, can become your part-time Chief Marketing Officer. If your marketing budget is $100,000 or more, Ben can set up a free one hour consultation to discuss designing a program that specifically addresses your needs at yourbrandmarketing.com. I’ve been looking forward to speaking with Ben about his company, his new book Powerful Personal Brands: A Hands On Guide to Understanding Yours, and why he does what he does. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 27 Guest: Jason Nauert, www.jasonnauert.com
What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of www.lurongliving.com, Adam Greenberg. It’s been said that an Army marches on its stomach. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with a renowned butcher, Jason Nauert, who fills the stomachs of those fighting the Global War on Terror including the 10th Special Forces Group. He’s creating military members who are not merely able to nourish themselves in austere environments and prevent food-bourne illness, he’s creating military members who fuse their passion with service and enjoy creating meals in the field of unparalleled quality. He also serves as a consultant to civilian organizations that desire butcher based menu development, in house charcuterie development, recipe development, wild game butchering and cooking services, and curing at home. With more than 35 years of experience and certification through the Rocky Mountain Institute of Meat, Jason Nauert is transforming the image of the Army Cook from a soldier in charge of mass meal production into passionate leaders who take great pride in serving America’s noble servicemen and service women with food that fuels them toward mission completion. What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with Gwen Lawrence. You may have seen her on the Better Man Television Show, which she co-hosts with Brian Jones, read her book Body Sculpting with Yoga, or heard how she serves professional sports teams and countless others with her program called Power Yoga for Sports. Her unique ability to read bodies helps her analyze any imbalances and asymmetry that can lead to injury. She’s helped elite athletes like Alex Rodriguez and Plaxico Burress prevent injury and enhance their performance. Her clients include the New York Knicks, the New York Yankees, the New York Rangers, the New York Giants, David Letterman, Regis Philbin, Coach Larry Brown, UN Secretary General Kofi Anon, Kathie Lee and Frank Gifford, Kate Hudson, the New York Redbulls—the list goes on and on. You can access a detailed list, training opportunities, testimonials, tips, T-shirts, at her website Gwen Lawrence.com. You will also find some blog posts that give a window into how Gwen has achieved such success. In March of 2018, Gwen described on her blog how she does not believe in regret. A survivor of unspeakable childhood sexual abuse, Gwen wrote “I believe I have a purpose to fulfill” and embraces her journey that “has ups and downs of learning, creating, discovering, disappointment, and great highs.” She also describes how people “can’t appreciate or even conceive of a high or an accomplishment unless they have felt the lows.” She describes how the adversity in her life has made her “tough as nails” and “aware of her surroundings.” She’s developed “peak, finely tuned intuition,” and a ferocious sense of protection for her family and those she cares about. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 24 Guest: Colonel Don Taylor, US Air Force Veteran and Author
What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball Player and CEO of www.lurongliving.com, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with United States Air Force Veteran Colonel Don Taylor. He is the author of a book called "The Quiet Heroes: Timeless Reflections of an American Airman." The book highlights the experiences of World War II veteran Technical Sergeant Erwin "Itch" Harrison of the United States Army Air Corps. We discuss the book and how the process of writing it caused Don to draw from his experiences serving in Iraq as the Commander of a military hospital to gain valuable insights into honoring Itch’s challenges and service. If you’re interested in gaining a greater understanding of how servant leadership can transform one of the most terrifying and traumatic environments on earth into a place of health, empowerment, resilience, and cohesion by making peace with your own mortality and voluntarily risking one’s own life in the service of the broken, welcome to Get Up Nation Episode 24. Nowhere is resilience more valuable and important than when human beings decide to enter the jaws of modern warfare to heal and serve. Don shares how he honored the sacrifices and challenges of those who volunteered to go, recognized and communicated the supreme privilege of their duty to save and heal in a war zone, and sustained his staff’s mental health as they faced the tremendous challenge of caring for those who suffered the most vicious trauma the world has to offer. He also reflects on those who survived prior wars and conflicts and how the need to better serve them creates his calling to tirelessly help these heroes every day of his life. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 23 Guest: Former NFL Player Cory Procter
What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball Player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with former National Football League Player Cory Procter. He was a member of three teams in the NFL: the Detroit Lions, Dallas Cowboys, and the Miami Dolphins. After 6 years in the league he suffered a Patellar Tendon rupture in his left knee which ended his career in the NFL and led to the phenomenal work he is doing now to empower, inspire, and champion people to become their very best with relentless grit, endurance, and perseverance. Cory recently joined Mark Pattison in climbing Mount Kilimanjaro as part of Mark’s Summit Project and Chris Long’s Waterboys organization. Every season, Green Beret and former Seattle Seahawk Nate Boyer joins Chris Long in challenging combat veterans and NFL alumni to join him in conquering Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. Cory conquered it even after losing vision in one eye due to altitude sickness. He is a phenomenal example of resilience and speaks frequently about how to possess the habits that create greatness as a keynote speaker. This podcast highlights the power of human beings, the importance and value of our closest relationships, and how people can accomplish amazing impact no matter where they are in their lives. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 22 Guest: Travis Partington of Oscar Mike Radio
What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball Player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. On this Memorial Day, I offer you Episode 22. Recently, I spoke with Travis Partington of Oscar Mike Radio. A United States Marine with a passion to serve the veteran community with his radio show, it was my honor to connect with Travis, listen to how he decided to invest himself in the service of those who’ve served, and learn more about his passion to end veteran suicide. If you live in the Greater Boston area and share a passion to bring healing and hope to those who are dealing with the psychological impact of violence and war, connect with Travis. He’s Oscar Mike, On the Move, toward and for more conscious systems that truly meet the needs of people who place their lives on the altar of freedom and survive. If you are interested in creating systems where people are able to effectively heal into wholeness after experiencing traumatic stress, trauma, and violence, please take the time to not only listen to this podcast, but join Travis, Oscar Mike Radio, Get Up Nation, and me in creating a world where wounds are soothed and bound at the highest and deepest level, where conflict is resolved with unparalleled power and efficiency, and where people who offer their entire selves to creating a brilliant world free of terror, oppression, and abuse experience the honor and satisfaction of knowing their sacrifices were worth every moment. Get Up Nation, if personal and organizational resilience can be established in these environments, just think of what that means for every facet of society, whether in refugee populations, populations who have survived oppressive and abusive forms of government, populations who have survived natural disaster, domestic violence survivors, human trafficking survivors, those attempted to heal from Adverse Childhood Experiences, those suffering from the effects of poverty and mental illness—the list goes on and on. We are on the cusp of a New Era. Be a part of creating a world where no one gets left behind. Veterans lead the way into the most violent places on earth, now they’re helping to lead the way out of the most affected places within. This episode is dedicated to Nathan Vacho and Dan Thompson who made the ultimate sacrifice to create a world free from terror. Rest in Peace. Brothers, I’m doing my very best to honor the sacrifice you made, to be worthy of it.

What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball Player and CEO of Lurong Living, Adam Greenberg. Welcome to Episode 21! Recently, I had the honor and privilege of speaking with the brave and brilliant Christina Lila Wilson of AngelHack. Christina became disillusioned by the slow pace of the American non-profit space and hungered to have a more immediate, powerful impact in some of the most troubled, violent, and impoverished environments on our planet. She discovered and joined AngelHack and now travels the world helping some of the hungriest entrepreneurs and visionaries on earth create solutions for global problems such as coexistence, financial inclusion, women’s empowerment, rare disease, road safety, and access to education. AngelHack’s synchronization of the non-profit and technology worlds has helped Christina and those she serves make the impact they crave with speed and efficiency. Listen to Christina share how she refuses to be funneled into common silos of perspective and blends people of different ages, cultures, socioeconomic strata, and other categories. Together, they build practical, effective solutions while serving with power and passion. I hope you enjoy hearing how outdated paradigms of technology, progress, and business are being transcended by “warrior souls” who use their suffering and pain to defeat hopelessness with opportunity, intelligence, and hard work. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 20 Guest: Judy Hoberman, TedxSpeaker, Author, Trainer, Coach
What up, Get Up Nation? My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of the Get Up Nation Podcast and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball Player and CEO of www.lurongliving.com, Adam Greenberg. Today, I have the honor and privilege of speaking with Judy Hoberman. Judy is a true example of a person whose resilience, perseverance, and commitment to valuing her whole self allowed her to conquer massive barriers to success. At the age of 17, her own father told her that “all she was was pretty, and she would never amount to anything else.” She repeatedly refused to allow her intelligence to be suppressed and pursued her passion for business. Early in her career she was employed by a roofing company. She was told to be the face of company and not to speak in order to be successful. If she would’ve obeyed these voices, the world would never have benefited from the brilliance of her many books including “Selling in a Skirt,” “Famous Isn’t Enough,” “Pure Wealth,” and most recently “Walking on the Glass Floor: Seven Essential Qualities of Women Who Lead.” These business books for sales executives and entrepreneurs have been featured on Fox News Radio, CNN Headlines, ABC, CBS, and Good Morning Texas. If she would’ve allowed these stifling voices to silence her own, the world would never have heard her TED Talk called “The Greatest Missed Opportunity” or listened to her radio show called “Selling in a Skirt” which airs on Mondays at 12pm Central on the Women for Women Radio Network. Her commitment to valuing herself and the entirety of her potential has led to the world valuing intensely her skills, knowledge, and insights. A gender expert, Judy is quoted as saying, “Women want to be treated equally, not identically.” She daily creates a world where people value people and intentionally transcend limiting and inaccurate assumptions about one another. Her perseverance and excellence has earned one of the most vital and important attributes any of us can possess, the respect of others. She’s in the process of writing a children’s book and regularly raises awareness about the importance of mental health through the powerful, ineffable core connections that exist between animals and people. These are the type of potent, core connections that can help bring men and women great comfort during their process of transitioning from Post-Traumatic Stress to Post-Traumatic Growth. Get Up Nation Podcast Episode 12 Guest: Jamel Herring, Marine, Olympian, Professional Boxer
Guest: Jamel Herring, Marine, Olympian, Professional Boxer What up Get Up Nation! My name is Ben Biddick, the Host of The Get Up Nation Podcast and the Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player and CEO of www.lurongliving.com, Adam Greenberg. Resilience is defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.” After researching Jamel Herring, an American professional boxer who is known in the ring as “Semper Fi,” Jamel clearly is a portrait of resilience. Stephen Brown, the close friend who encouraged Jamel to do something significant with his life, died of lung cancer after facilitating Jamel’s enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. Just prior to Jamel’s first deployment to Iraq, he grieved being unable to see Stephen before his passing. Jamel surrounded himself with a phenomenal team of Marines that helped him bear the stresses associated with arresting improvised explosive device makers while under the threat of insurgent snipers. Even while meeting the demands of his duty, he still found time to train, and in the desert sun boxed and competed to earn a spot on the All-Marine Corps boxing team. Jamel became a father. The joys of fatherhood were paralleled with the heavy burden of knowing he was going back into a combat zone for his second deployment. Jamel survived the second deployment and returned to meet the newborn son he’d never met. Soon after, a daughter named Ariyanah was also born. Her glorious and brief life ended as a result of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. As Jamel reeled from the loss of his daughter, he honored her spirit by digging even deeper and moving forward with his boxing career. He overcame more seasoned opposition and earned a slot on the 2012 American Olympic Boxing Team. Since then he completed his military service and became a professional boxer. He is currently training in preparation for his next fight scheduled for April 14, 2018 at Madison Square Garden. Jamel and PG Sports' Paul Guarino, thank you for taking time out for the Get Up Nation Podcast!

Get Up Nation Holiday Sitrep
I just wanted to send out a special situation report to all members of Get Up Nation in the middle of the night on Christmas Eve. This message is for all of you who are out there right now, doing what you gotta do. When so many are tucked in their warm beds, well fed, dreaming in the bliss of security, there are so many of you out there, creating it. Whether you’re a cop who just talked someone out of suicide or just untangled some family members tearing each other to shreds immersed in substances and alcohol and holiday stress or whether you just bore the barrage of someone who’s lost all semblance control and cursed and spat and fought with you while you remained professional with supreme empathy and restraint, Whether you’re a nurse working the night shift, stomaching the tragedies that barrel through the ER doors while you slug down coffee, hoping you get home in time to see the kids open their presents. May the vicarious trauma you endure lend sweetness to the moments with your families as you know how bad things can be, and know also how good things can be as a result of staring life and death square in the eyes shift after shift and shift, Whether you’re a paramedic or EMT doing your best to revive and console, storming chaos to save life, Whether you are in the mental health field, and steel yourself with self-care in anticipation of the investments you will make in others during the holidays, so that in holidays to come the Crisis of this one will prevent them from deploying permanent solutions to temporary problems, Whether you’re going to be working all night on your start up because it’s your passion and the greatest holiday gift you experience is bringing your idea into reality, Whether you are in a hospital bed or on your own bed at home, suffering from injury or disease, Whether you are the loved one of a person who has served in the military or a member of a Gold Star family whose every holiday is accompanied by the memory of a fallen loved one, Whether you are a member of the all volunteer United States Armed Services shivering through the night, in a place no one even knows about, in a place no one even knows America is, Thank you, we honor you.
