GetChoGrindUp Podcast #138 - Nico De Bruyn - Part 1

GetChoGrindUp Podcast #138 - Nico De Bruyn - Part 1

It is our pleasure to welcome, Nico Debruyn to the GetChoGrindUp Podcast! NIco is an entrepreneur, marketer and now a published author!

Originally from South Africa, Nico moved to the country at the age 12. Initially bored with his schooling situation, he learned at a young age to invest his time in people and conversation.

As a step into the entrepreneurship realm, Nico found value in a podcast instructing him to start flipping things he had in his room. so he did. Next thing he knows, he's selling empty Apple product boxes on eBay to a market he didn't previously know existed! This lit a fire and he was able to start to make things happen.

Fresh from Arizona State University, this recent graduate has truly made an impact on the living world. Through his many interactions and conversations with people over his life time, he has found a distinct value in it all. With what he's learned, he was able to channel that to fuel his ambitions and even write his own book! The core value, We're All Marketers!!

John Smith - Coming Back To Life From Being Lifeless For An Hour, The Story Behind The Movie "Breakthrough"

John Smith - Coming Back To Life From Being Lifeless For An Hour, The Story Behind The Movie "Breakthrough"

Have you had your breakthrough moment?

John Smith’s happened on January 19th, 2015. He and a couple of friends saw that the ice froze over and wanted to play on the ice. Little did they know that the ice was thin and seconds after saying “I love you” to his mother on the phone, he and his 2 friends fell through the ice. John was underwater for 15 minutes and had no pulse for 45 minutes. The doctors were going to do a time of death after John’s mother prayed for him, but the instant that John’s mother finished her prayer, John had a pulse.

Call it a miracle, call it God, whatever you call it, that was John’s breakthrough moment and now it has been turned into a movie in theatres now called “Breakthrough”. We got to interview John himself on what it was like to see his life turn into a movie.

Key Takeaways From This Episode:

  • The power of belief. Whether it's God, Buddha, yourself, etc. the power of actual belief is beautiful and can allow you to accomplish so much in life.
  • Being humble
  • What it's like to see yourself played by an actor

There isn’t a story like John’s out there, he isn’t suppose to be here right now, but he is and we get to hear his story.

If you’re interested in watching “Breakthrough” it is in theatres nation wide!

Kyle Mogged - Working For Gary Vaynerchuk and Why You Can Meet Anyone You Want Now A Days

Kyle Mogged - Working For Gary Vaynerchuk and Why You Can Meet Anyone You Want Now A Days

Last week we had the storytelling wizard, this week we have The Zen Wizard! Coming back on all the way from EP. 8, its Kyle Mogged. Last time we spoke to Kyle, he was just about to leave for his “residency” to work at Vaynermedia with Team Gary. It’s been almost a year and a half since then and we had plenty to cover with Kyle in the world of personal branding!

Key Takeaways From This Episode:

  • You can literally speak to ANYONE, you just have figure out a way to finesse it. Someone you know can connect you to another person, who can connect you to the person you want to meet. IF ALL ELSE FAILS, you can always use social media to help you out
  • Speaking things into existence. Maybe you don’t “believe this”, but just thinking that you can do something will give you confidence, which then allows you to achieve what you’ve always wanted to
  • If you’re a videographer, your opportunities are ENDLESS. Find someone you want to work with, create some stuff for them for free, then provide them value. If you’re good enough they might even let you work for them.
  • Personal branding is only going to get bigger

Kyle is ALL ABOUT the zen, meditation, chakra dances, etc. If you want to learn more about that side of his story, definitely check out his instagram as he revolves around all of that.

Andrew Helms - How To Succeed After Dropping Out Of High School

Andrew Helms - How To Succeed After Dropping Out Of High School

Whats it like to be a story telling wizard? We got to talk about his journey of building Feralflix, a company that helps you produce your story. But Andrew’s path to becoming a wizard wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows.

Andrew nearly died as a child… his father shook him at an early age which left him hospitalized and then caused him to get adopted into his extended family. On top of all this, Andrew dropped out of high school with needing just 1 more credit and had to try to figure out life from there. He eventually got his GED, got a Bachelors and then a Masters and is now the CEO of Feralflix.

Key Takeaways From This Episode:

  • No matter what situation you’re put in or you put yourself in, know there is always a way out
  • You can learn anything in 100 days but only if you follow the 3 rules of finding someone who knows how to do it and learning from them, actually going out there and learning to do it,
  • Meditate. Your heart started beating before your brain was a thing. Meditating is one of the few things you can do to control your heart.
  • Take your experiences and be a teacher so that others don’t have to experience the same negative things you went through. Andrew does this as a father, but that lesson is for everyone
  • Its okay to take some time for yourself, he started his professional career 4-5 years later than most, but he is on par if not at a higher place in life compared to those who were on the “Standard” path
  • Be happy!

Mark Metry pt 2 - How To Grow Your Podcast Into An iTunes Top 100 Podcast

Mark Metry pt 2 - How To Grow Your Podcast Into An iTunes Top 100 Podcast

“Nobody is really taking it seriously”

That’s what Mark Metry said in terms of the podcasting world currently. If Mark sounds familiar, its because he was on our show ALL THE WAY back in episode 13, where we talked about him making 6-figures when he was 13 playing Minecraft and the beginnings of his podcast.

Over the past year and a half, he has grown from 0 to an iTunes Top 100 podcast and this is his formula… with whatever you do in your life, spend 3 hours each day on it. Thats 21 hours a week and more than what most people put into their passion. Mark has interviewed people like Seth Godin, Naveen Jain, to just name a few and he says one of the few things that seperates the “most successful” people from the rest is that they consistently put in the effort each and every day.

Key Takeaways From The Podcast:

  • 3 hours a day 7 days a week
  • All the hours start to stack up after a while
  • Stop paying attention to the downloads everyday
  • Increase the input vs focusing on your output
  • Realize that no matter “how big” the guest can seem, everyone is just a person and you can reach ANYONE via social media
  • The time to start is now
  • “Mental toughness is showing up everyday and doing the same thing”

Mark says he’s just a guy, but we think he’s special in the way he’s able to grow not only with podcasting, but LinkedIn. He’s a man thats on his grind and getting better each and every day. If you don’t pay attention to Mark’s content, he is always sharing tips on Mental Health, eating tips, etc. We’re keeping our eye on Mark and so should you!

Mikey Bee pt 2 - Mindset Monday and Why Its Okay To Not Be An Entrepreneur, How To Teach Children About Emotional Intelligence, How To Get Students To Like School

Mikey Bee pt 2 - Mindset Monday and Why Its Okay To Not Be An Entrepreneur, How To Teach Children About Emotional Intelligence, How To Get Students To Like School

Do you have to be an entrepreneur?

In today’s day in age it seems like you watch one Gary Vaynerchuk video and the internet’s algorithm pushes everything from dropshipping to wholesaling videos in your face telling you that you can live your dream being an entrepreneur.

Mikey Bee has a different perspective in that he has tried his own ventures and realized that it wasn’t for him. He could never get the ball rolling whenever he wanted to create a company or non-profit and actually lost all of his money on attempting to create a non-profit. So that's why he decided to partner with a friend who already was in the midst of starting a business because he knew the value that he could provide especially in marketing.

Thats where Poochie Butter comes in!

In this episode some highlighting points are:

  • How Mikey took a step away from teaching to pursue his passions, ultimately failing and running low on money so he got back into teaching while growing Poochie Butter.
  • What Mikey went through in terms of starting a non-profit and losing all of his money
  • Why you don’t have to be an entrepreneur
  • How the education system can start to change for the better
  • What his school is doing to lead that change
  • His first rap album is dropping this summer!
  • Why emotional intelligence is better than IQ
  • How to teach emotional intelligence to children
  • How to respond to your kid not liking school

Mikey Bee returns for his 2nd episode and it is nothing short but packed with insights into the education system. The rapping teacher has gone through many ups and downs since we last spoke to him on Episode 46 and now is 50% on his loading bar, although his take on a loading bar is different than most. Mikey’s biggest message to teachers and young students is mindset and is setting the trend with his classroom activity called “Mindset Monday” where he focuses in on the emotional intelligence of his students and asking the question “Why?”

Jesse Kay - How An 18-Year Old Got To Interview People Like Jack Dorsey And Gary Vaynerchuk

Jesse Kay - How An 18-Year Old Got To Interview People Like Jack Dorsey And Gary Vaynerchuk

How does an 18 year old get to interview the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk and Jack Dorsey?

He starts early and sends 350 emails a day.

Jesse Kay started his entrepreneur venture when he was 9 years old when he started flipping shoes on eBay. Which led to starting the podcast at 16. When you send 350 emails, someone is going to respond, and as they started to pile up, it lead to internships and relationships that allowed him to grow his own media company.

Now he helps mainly athletes with their social media growth and finding ways to monetize their audience on social media.

How do you interview the best of the best?

  • Send 350 emails a day, yea it sounds like a lot, but when you’re first starting out and don’t have a reputation to go off of; that means you have time to spend to build that reputation
  • Find a differentiating point. Jesse used that he was a 16 year old podcast host, what's your differentiating point?
  • Go into it to build a relationship, not a one and done thing where you get an interview and thats that

How to build legitimacy, especially when you’re young?

  • Start off with one client, make sure you give him more value than they are paying you
  • Referrals, referrals, referrals
  • Find your way in, for Jesse it was getting people onto the podcast and then he shows people what they do
  • Give free advice and give them as much advice as possible

When you hear Jesse talk, it seems like he’d be an extrovert and someone who has always been open to talking to people on a regular basis, but it was actually the complete opposite for him growing up. He had severe anxiety and the best way he found to cope with it was putting himself in situations where he couldn’t back out. For example his first ever speaking engagement was on stage with Gary Vaynerchuk in front of a thousand people…

Jesse preaches a message of being consistent with your actions, putting in the time and effort to get results, and honing in on your one key differentiator to help you break into a market.

Radley Gillis - 2 Paths 1 Choice, Why Having A Solid Community And A Good Mentality Can Get You Through Anything

Radley Gillis - 2 Paths 1 Choice, Why Having A Solid Community And A Good Mentality Can Get You Through Anything

Imagine you’ve been an athlete your whole life and honed into fitness… but because of a freak accident you’ve lost one leg just below the knee and then the other you have a few inches left just under your torso..

You get back up even stronger and figure it out.

That is exactly what Radley Gillis went through when one night he going home from work on his motorcycle and because of the rain, his bike slipped and sent him into the guardrail…

What happened next is still a blur for Radley, but from what he remembers is that in the ambulance ride to the hospital he died a few times, he lost both of his legs, they had to take a piece of his back muscle and wrap it around his femur, and he light heartily says he may have even lost an organ or two.

But none of this has stopped him. That accident happened 2 years ago and although Radley isn’t where he would necessarily like to be, he most definitely is on his way there.

Key takeaways:

  • Never take anything for granted
  • No matter what situation life throws at you, you can always find a way out of it
  • Family and community were the backbone of helping him get to the mental state he is in today
  • The hardest battle is the mental battle
  • Radley is a living miracle and if you don’t listen to his story and get motivated to go out and do what you said you were going to do yesterday… you just gotta go and do it
  • 2 paths 1 choice

On top of recovering from the accident, Radley has accomplished a number of things and has a few more targets on his radar to hit.

What's he done?

  • Finished his summer classes and took an exam even though he was still recovering with tubes in throughout his body
  • Recent graduate from UCF
  • Going into law school this fall
  • Ran and won the Presidency for his fraternity at UCF
  • Started his own fitness company with his best friend Adler called RadFlex
  • And so much more!

Whats next?

  • Become a lawyer
  • Run for senate or governor
  • Grow their fitness company
  • Inspire others
  • Help grow the prosthetics industry

WreckitCraig - Going From Influencer To A "Corporate" Job and Why He Choose This Path

WreckitCraig - Going From Influencer To A "Corporate" Job and Why He Choose This Path

In the age of the internet, many people are making the jump from school/corporate life into entrepreneurship and becoming an influencer; BUT WreckitCraig has done the complete opposite. Although Craig still boosts over 27,000 followers on Instagram and still makes a few sponsored posts through IG, he has slowly transitioned his life to become more stable by getting a job doing makeup at Macy’s.

Maybe you aren’t in the makeup industry, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t relate to Craig’s journey. The self awareness to not only realize that the influencer life is great on paper, but extremely stressful at its core; and act on it to go against the current movement and get a job is something we can all take a lesson on.

Key takeaways:

  • Even though something is great at the beginning, it doesn’t mean it will always stay great
  • Burnout is a real thing and if you don’t manage it well it can take a lot away from you
  • Its okay to take a step back sometimes, especially when it involves your own personal health
  • Learn how to leverage the internet to give yourself opportunities to show the world what you have
  • Don’t do things that you don’t want to because other people want you to do it, do it because you want to and it makes you happy.
  • If you’re a male, clean your face. Buy a face wash, a toner, and moisturizer and use them at least one time a day
  • There is no such thing as 2 in 1s

Craig is a now a make up artist with Macy’s in the Los Angeles area with over 27,000 followers on Instagram. He has worked with some of the greatest make up brands such as Chanel and Muddy Body. He has made himself turn into the Joker as well as many other creations that you can see on his personal Instagram. Besides all of the makeup stuff, he loves to play videogames and thats actually how he got his name “WreckitCraig” was combining “Wreck It Ralph” to his name “Craig”.

This episode we talked more about his journey from his previous episode (episode 29) until today. If you want to his to more of his origin story and how he got to where he is today, check it out here!

Daniel Botero - Why Only 15% Of College Students Graduate With A Job Is Not Enough

Daniel Botero - Why Only 15% Of College Students Graduate With A Job Is Not Enough

Daniel Botero was living the dream life. He had a career in sales, was making more money than he ever thought he would, and helping students out with their careers…. But something just wasn’t right. Thats why he took the leap of faith, quit his job and started his podcast “Mastering College To Career”.

We got to talk about the best things students can do in school to set themselves up for success upon graduating. Daniel knows his stats and one that stood out to us is that “85% of students graduate without a job lined up”. To us that is crazy because the whole idea of college is that you go to get a job after.

Another topic that came up is the theory of “The Golden Handcuffs”. Basically it is when someone who is working keeps spending all of their money so that they believe they need to work more to spend more and in the end can never quit, retire, or pursue their passion. This is similar to the theory of “keeping up with the Jones’s”.

If you’re a student, this episode is definitely for you because there are some hidden gems that you won’t hear anywhere else.

Leann Abad - Capitalizing On Trends To Make Money

Leann Abad - Capitalizing On Trends To Make Money

Leann Abad is a good friend who has found a way to capitalize on a recent trend that hit the States… the Polar Vortex. He had always been itching to find ways to jump into entrepreneur land and this was an idea that he pulled the trigger on.

The basis is that the Polar Vortex hit several states across the US and he was marketing it sort of like a music tour. You can compare it to the likes of an Astroworld by Travis Scott or Yeezus Tour by Kanye West. But the beauty isn’t in the idea, but rather capitalizing on attention.

He’s gotten attention from one37pm, a news article geared towards men and has been slowly growing the brand. Leann doesn’t know what the future holds for it, maybe they expand into creating merchandise for other events like this.

We got to talk about Leann’s short lived college life (only one year), how he transitioned into the real world after dropping out, and what students should look to get out of college.

D'Andre Evans - How To Build An iTunes Top 20 Podcast From Scratch

D’andre Evans is the host of the “LevelUpDaily” Podcast, an iTunes Top 20 podcast! He’s had guests on such as David Meltzer, John Lee Dumas, and James Worthy. But this wasn’t always his life. Before the podcast, D’andre was working a traditional 9-5, but started the podcast because he wanted more.

His message is to show that YOU can make it too. D’andre didn’t come from a world of connections that allowed him to get these guests on, he did it through hacking the system. Constantly sending DMs, going to networking events to meet them, etc. these were all tactics of how someone without a big name has been able to win big in the podcasting realm.

Whats next? He wants to be at the head of podcasting. He wants to grow his brand to be a 6-7 figure podcast in terms of number of downloads and he is definitely on his way to doing so.
